Application of electrospun composite nanofibers as an efficient sorbent for extraction of pesticides from food samples

Applications of metal organic frameworks in dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE)

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a fascinating family of crystalline porous materials made up of metal clusters and organic linkers. In comparison with other porous materials, MOFs have unique characteristics including high surface area, homogeneous open cavities, and permanent high porosity with variable shapes and sizes. For these reasons, MOFs have recently been explored as sorbents in sample preparation by solid-phase extraction (SPE). However, SPE requires large amounts of sorbents and suffers from limited contact surfaces with analytes, which compromises extraction recovery and efficiency. Dispersive SPE (D-SPE) overcomes these limitations by dispersing the sorbents into the sample, which in turn increases contact with the analytes. Miniaturization of the microextraction procedure, particularly the amount of sorbent reduces the amount consumed of the organic solvent and shorten the time required to attain the equilibrium state. This may explain the reported high efficiency and applicability of MOFs in dispersive micro SPE (D-µ-SPE). This method retains all the advantages of solid phase extraction while also being simpler, faster, cheaper, and, in some cases, more effective in comparison with D-SPE. Besides, D-µ-SPE requires smaller amounts of the sorbents which reduces the overall cost, and the amount of waste generated from the analytical process. In this review, we discuss the applications of MOFs in D-µ-SPE of various analytes including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, organic dyes from miscellaneous matrices including water samples, biological samples and food samples.

Low flow-resistance solid phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in water and food samples by high-pressure wet spinning porous polyimide microfibers

In this work, porous polyimide microfibers (PI-μF) were prepared by high-pressure wet spinning method, and successfully applied as adsorbents for solid phase extraction (SPE) of fluoroquinolones (FQs) in water and food samples. The PI-μFs of ∼10, 25, 50, 100 μm in diameter could be controlled by the inner diameter of quartz capillary nozzles. The flow resistance of SPE cartridges packed with 10 μm PI microfiber (10-PI-μF) and 25-PI-μF was comparable to or even lower than that of commercial SPE cartridges, while the flow resistance of 50-PI-μF and 100-PI-μF SPE cartridges was increased obviously due to tiny broken pieces. The 10-PI-μF and 25-PI-μF have a specific surface area of 102 m2 g-1 and 76 m2 g-1, mesopores of 22-32 nm, and large breakthrough volume of 110 mL/5 mg and 85 mL/5 mg for FQs, while the 50-PI-μF and 100-PI-μF had much lower specific surface area and hardly had retention for FQs. FQs from tap water, egg and milk samples were then extracted by PI-μF SPE, and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). SPE parameters as type of elution solvent, elution solvent volume, pH value of sample solution, flow rate of sample solution, and breakthrough volume were first optimized in detail. Under the optimal conditions, the PI-μF SPE/HPLC-FLD method showed high recoveries (96.8%-107%), wide linearity (0.05-50 μg L-1, or 0.01-10 μg L-1), high determination coefficients (R2 ≥0.9992), and low limits of detection (LODs, 0.005-0.014 μg L-1). For the real tap water, egg and milk samples, the recoveries and RSDs were 81-119% and 0.8-9.8%, respectively. The results show that porous microfiber up to 25 μm in diameter is a promising solid-phase extraction adsorbent with the lowest flow resistance that can be used for trace organic pollutants in water and food samples.

Composite "Crosslinked Polyvinyl Alcohol-Magnetite" as a Stimuli-Responsive Matrix for Optical Methods

The preparation and application of the composite material "crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol-magnetite" as a sensitive matrix for use in digital colorimetry and optical micrometry methods are discussed. The material was synthesized in the form of spherical granules (for micrometry) and thin films (for digital colorimetry). The obtained composites were characterized by the registration of magnetization curves. It was shown that the amount of grown Fe3O4 particles in the polymer gel is in linear dependence with the iron salt concentrations in the impregnating solutions. The composite granules were applied to determining monosaccharides using optical micrometry. The optimal pH value for the total amount of monosaccharides' determination was 8.6. The study of the analytical response of composite granules and films performed with a low limit of detection (7.9 mmol/dm3) of both glucose and fructose and a possibility of the control of high alcohol contention in water media. The granules were used to determine the total carbohydrate content in samples of natural honey and syrups with high fructose contents, while the films were used to control the alcohol content in hand antiseptics. The results obtained are in good agreement with the data provided by the manufacturers.

Polyaniline-coated kapok fibers for convenient in-syringe solid-phase microextraction and determination of organochlorine and pyrethroid pesticide residues in aqueous samples

Pesticides used in agriculture have low polarity and a tendency to accumulate in fatty tissues, posing potential risks to human health. Effective pre-treatment is crucial due to complex sample matrices and low concentrations of pesticide residues typically encountered in instrument analysis. In this study, polyaniline-coated kapok fiber (PANI-KF) was synthesized successfully using in-situ oxidative polymerization for use as sorbents in in-syringe SPME of pyrethroid pesticides (PYRs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) from aqueous samples. Coating the natural KF with PANI maintained the hollow microtubular structure and fiber morphology while significantly enhancing the extraction efficiency. The extraction process was easily conducted by simply pulling and pushing the syringe plunger. The entire extraction process, utilizing 3 mg of PANI-KF, could be completed in approximately 3 min. Density functional theory results indicated that the adsorption mechanism of PANI-KF towards OCPs and PYRs mainly involved van der Waals interactions, π-π interactions, and weak hydrogen bonding interactions. With the coupling of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, a quantification method was established that exhibited good linearities (R2 > 0.990), and relative recoveries (87.2-108.5 %). The limits of detection ranged from 0.4 to 2.0 ng mL-1 and the matrix effects were negligible (-12.3-16.4 %). The validated in-syringe SPME-GC-MS method was successfully applied to determine pesticide residues in fruit juices, oral liquids and herbal extract granules with satisfactory accuracy and precision. PANI-KF exhibits remarkable promise as a sorbent for the extraction and enrichment of pesticide residues in aqueous samples, thereby contributing to the advancement of pesticide residue determination methodologies.

A novel sorbent based on electrospun for electrically-assisted solid phase microextraction of six non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, followed by quantitation with HPLC-UV in human plasma samples

BACKGROUND

Although NSAIDs possess notable therapeutic and pharmaceutical qualities, it's essential to acknowledge that excessive doses can result in toxicity within the human body. Moreover, the importance lies in identifying and measuring their trace amounts. Due to their existence within intricate matrices, the creation of novel electrospun nanofibers as sorbents for electrically-assisted solidphase microextraction (EA-SPME) becomes vital. This innovation caters to the requirement for the effective pre-treatment of NSAID samples, providing a strategic approach to managing the complexities associated with trace quantities found in various matrices.

RESULTS

First, polyvinylalcohol/casein/tannic acid/polyaniline/titanium dioxide nanoparticles (PVA/CAS/TA/PANI/TiO2 NPs) electrospun nanofibers were prepared for EA-SPME on pewter rode and then, trace amounts of six NSAIDs (Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Naproxen, Celecoxib, Ibuprofen and mefenamic acid) were adsorbed chemically on these nanofibers. In the next step, the desorption of six NSAIDs was electrochemically done from prepared electrospun nanofibers on a pewter rod which was as working electrode at three electrodes system. Finally, these drugs were quantified from different human plasma samples with HPLC-UV. The synthesis of electrospun nanofibers was confirmed through a series of analytical techniques including field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy with elemental mapping analysis (EDX-Mapping), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR). The optimal percentage of additive compounds to PVA/CAS for electrospinning, as well as the factors influencing adsorption and desorption processes, were determined through both of Design Expert software and MATLAB programming language.

SIGNIFICANCE

Under optimum conditions, the wide linear range was 27-8000 ng mL-1 with R2≥ 0.9897, low detection limits were ranged from 8 to 27.3 ng mL-1 based on S/N = 3 and significant enrichment factors were acquired. The intra-day and inter-day RSDs% were obtained within the 4.51% - 5.68% and 4.28%-5.45%, respectively. Finally, The effectiveness of the EA-SPME-HPLC-UV method was assessed for determining NSAIDs in plasma samples, demonstrating good recoveries ranging from 90.2% to 105.2%.

Dummy molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction method for the determination of some phthalate monoesters in urine by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis

A dummy molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent was used for the selective extraction of some phthalate monoesters, monoethyl phthalate (MEP), monobutyl phthalate (MnBP) and mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) in urine prior to gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Diethyl phthalate (DEP), a phthalate ester, was successfully used as a dummy template to prepare selective sorbent for MEP, MnBP, and MEHP extraction. DEP-imprinted poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate N-methacryloyl-l-tryptophan methyl ester) (DPEMT) microbeads were synthesized by suspension polymerization and characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer Emmet Teller (BET) analysis. The critical parameters (i.e., pH, sorbent amount, ionic strength, sample volume, elution solvent) affecting the extraction performance of the DPEMT-SPE sorbent were optimized. Under optimum conditions, good linearities were obtained in the concentration range of 4 to 60 ng/mL with determination coefficients (R2) of greater than 0.9959. The developed SPE method provided low limits of detection (LOD) of 0.05-1.20 ng/mL and limits of quantification (LOQ) of 0.18-4.01 ng/mL with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of less than 8.95 % for intra- and inter-day analyses. The proposed SPE method was used to analyze phthalate monoesters in spiked urine samples, and recoveries of 97.45-109.26 % were obtained. DPEMT-SPE sorbent was reused for 15 times without any losses of performance. Consequently, a highly selective and sensitive SPE method based on a dummy molecularly imprinted polymer combined with GC-MS was successfully developed to monitor human phthalate exposure via urine samples.
