Imaging techniques applied to characterize bitumen and bituminous emulsions

Current Research and Challenges in Bitumen Emulsion Manufacturing and Its Properties

The global increase of road infrastructure and its impact on the environment requires serious attention to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly road materials. One group of those materials is produced by using bitumen emulsion. However, there are still scientific and technical obstacles standing against its regular application. The bitumen emulsion formulation process and compositional optimization are subjected to a high number of degrees of freedom. Consequently, obtaining the desired product is mostly based on a series of random and tedious trials because of the enormous number of tests that are carried out to meet the required properties, such as emulsion stability, viscosity, droplet size (and distribution), and bitumen emulsion chemistry. Several pre-established formulation procedures have been presented in the literature. Some of them have technical limitations to be utilized for practical industrial application, whereas others are still not understood enough to be applied in bitumen emulsion formulation. Therefore, discussing some important issues in this field could be useful to offer a practical guide for bitumen emulsion manufacturers when trying to formulate a well-defined bitumen emulsion to best fit its use in pavement infrastructure rather than to simply to meet standard specifications. This review paper aims to enable the ultimate potential of bitumen emulsion by further reviewing the research progress of bitumen emulsion manufacturing and discussing the literature available up to now on this topic, in the realm of bitumen emulsion manufacturing and emulsion chemistry.

Thermodynamic characterization of a non-commercial emulsifying agent for asphalt emulsion

The objective of the present work was to characterize a non-commercial emulsifying agent: dodecylpyridinium thiocyanate (C12PCNS). This study was carried out by conductimetry technique in the temperature range 25-50 °C. Assuming the system conforms to the pseudo-phase separation model, change of standard Gibbs free energy, ΔG_m⁰, enthalpy, ΔH_m⁰, and entropy of micellization, ΔS_m⁰, were estimated. Values for critical micelle concentration (cmc) and the ionization degree, β, were determined directly from the experimental data. The results show that the influence of the counter ion is very relevant, because the cmc for this compound is appreciably greater than the cmc of other pyridinium homologs of the same chain length. Finally, the compensation rule for this system has been found and the compensation temperature and the intercept ΔH^*-it is an indication of the stability of the micelle-were estimated.

Controlling and characterising the deposits from polymer droplets containing microparticles and salt

A coffee ring-stain is left behind when droplets containing a wide range of different suspended particles evaporate, caused by a pinned contact line generating a strong outwards capillary flow. Conversely, in the very peculiar case of evaporating droplets of poly(ethylene oxide) solutions, tall pillars are deposited in the centre of the droplet following a boot-strapping process in which the contact line recedes quickly, driven by a constricting collar of polymer crystallisation: no other polymer has been reported to produce these central pillars. Here we map out the phase behaviour seen when the specific pillar-forming polymer is combined with spherical microparticles, illustrating a range of final deposit shapes, including the standard particle ring-stain, polymer pillars and also flat deposits. The topologies of the deposits are measured using profile images and stylus profilometery, and characterised using the skewness of the profile as a simple analytic method for quantifying the shapes: pillars produce positive skew, flat deposits have zero skew and ring-stains have a negative value. We also demonstrate that pillar formation is even more effectively disrupted using potassium sulphate salt solutions, which change the water from a good solvent to a theta-point solvent, consequently reducing the size and configuration of the polymer coils. This inhibits polymer crystallisation, interfering with the bootstrap process and ultimately prevents pillars from forming. Again, the deposit shapes are quantified using the skew parameter.

Classifying dynamic contact line modes in drying drops

Although the evaporation mode of sessile droplets is almost universally characterized as either constant contact radius (CCR) or constant contact angle (CCA), here we investigate two alternatives where the contact line speed is either constant or inversely proportional to the droplet radius. We present supporting evidence from our experiments on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymer solutions and blood, and from literature on pure and binary liquids, colloidal suspensions, soft substrates, reactive dewetting and hole nucleation. We introduce the use of novel "clock-drop" images to visualize droplet evolution and dimensionless height-radius plots to characterize the evaporative pathways. Combining these with a simple scaling argument, we show that receding speed is inversely proportional to the three-phase contact radius R, with a constant of proportionality A, which is dependent on the drying conditions and drop shape, but independent of drop volume. We have shown that this is equivalent to a linear decrease in contact area with time. By varying only A, which we achieved experimentally by choosing solutions whose precipitate constricts after deposition, the evaporation mode can be altered continuously to include the two established modes CCR and CCA, and two new modes which we term "slowly receding" and "rapidly receding", which are characterised by fully dried "doughnut" and "pillar" deposits respectively.
