Abstract
This paper reviews the radiation-induced synthesis of metallic nanostructures and their applications. Radiolysis is a powerful method for synthesizing metallic nanoparticles in solution and heterogeneous media, and it is a clean alternative to other existing physical, chemical, and physicochemical methods. By varying parameters such as the absorbed dose, dose rate, concentrations of metallic precursors, and nature of stabilizing agents, it is possible to control the size, shape, and morphology (alloy, core-shell, etc.) of the nanostructures and, consequently, their properties. Therefore, the as-synthesized nanoparticles have many potential applications in biology, medicine, (photo)catalysis, or energy conversion.

Abstract
The decay kinetics of the hydrated electron (eaq-) in aerosol OT (AOT)-based ternary microemulsions with pool sizes ranging from 0.34 to 4.85 nm were studied using picosecond pulse radiolysis coupled with transient absorption UV-vis spectroscopy. Electron transfer from oil to water and the subsequent solvation occurred within a time resolution of 7 ps. The decay kinetics of eaq- were accurately modeled using a double-exponential decay model, revealing the occurrence of two types of reactions, i.e., the recombination reaction at the water-oil interface and the radical-radical reactions in the water pools. The apparent lifetimes of both types of decays decreased significantly as the size of water pools decreased, indicating the influence of nanoconfinement effects. Moreover, the importance of the water-oil interface increased with decreasing water content, regardless of the presence or absence of NO3- as an electron scavenger in the water pools. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding on the kinetics of the radiation reaction in AOT-based microemulsions.

Abstract
Herein, using in situ generated solvated electrons in the reaction media, a highly time-efficient, one-pot green approach has been employed to synthesize palladium (Pd) nanoparticles (NPs) coated with a molecular assembly of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD). The appearance of a shoulder peak at 280 nm in the UV-Vis absorption spectra indicated the formation of Pd NPs, which was further confirmed from their cubic phase XRD pattern. The nanomorphology varied considerably as a function of the dose rate, wherein sphere-shaped NPs (average size ∼ 7.6 nm) were formed in the case of high dose rate electron-beam assisted synthesis, while nanoflakes self-assembled to form nanoflower-shaped morphologies in a γ-ray mediated approach involving a low dose rate. The formation kinetics of NPs was investigated by pulse radiolysis which revealed the formation of Pd-based transients by the solvated electron-induced reaction. Importantly, no interference of α-CD was observed in the kinetics of the transient species, rather it played the role of a morphology directing agent in addition to a biocompatible stabilizing agent. The catalytic studies revealed that the morphology of the NPs has a significant effect on the reduction efficiency of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. Another important highlight of this work is the demonstration of the morphology-dependent anticancer efficacy of Pd NPs against lung and brain cancer cells. Notably, flower-shaped Pd NPs exhibited significantly higher cancer cell killing as compared to spherical NPs, while being less toxic towards normal lung fibroblasts. Nonetheless, these findings show the promising potential of Pd NPs in anticancer treatment.

Abstract
Recently, Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have become widely applied nanomaterial in human contacting areas such as cosmetics, food and medicine due to their antibacterial property. On the other hand, surfactants are essential ingredient of several industrial and consumer formulations. Based on these important applications, the current research was aimed to carry out the synthesis and characterization of Tween 80 capped silver nanoparticles (T80-AgNPs) using gamma radiation reduction method. Characterization of T80-AgNPs was occurred by using UV-Vis, XRD, FTIR and TEM techniques. UV-Visible spectra showed surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak in the range of 420 nm signifying the synthesis of colloidal AgNPs. TEM confirmed the formation of spherical and uniformly distributed AgNPs with average size of 18 nm. XRD analysis illustrated the formation of pure crystalline AgNPs. The FTIR analysis provides evidence for the stabilization of AgNPs by Tween 80. The synthesized T80-AgNPs were evaluated for antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) as gram negative (G -ve) bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) as gram positive (G + ve) bacteria and anti-biofilm activity to P. aeruginosa. The results show that T80-AgNPs exhibits excellent antibacterial and antibiofilm activities.

Abstract
Hollow nanospheres (ϕ: 60–80 nm, wall thickness: 10–20 nm), consisted of UO2 nanoparticles (ϕ: 3–5 nm), were successfully prepared in a Triton X-100-water (50:50, w/w) hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) by γ-irradiation, where water soluble ammonium uranyl tricarbonate was added as precursor. The product was stable at least up to 300°C. Furthermore, whether the nanospheres were hollow or not, and the wall thickness of the hollow nanospheres could be easily controlled via adjusting dose rate. While in the Triton X-100 based micellar systems, only solid nanospheres were obtained. At last, a possible combination mechanism containing adsorption, aggregation and fracturing processes was proposed.

Abstract
In this article, we report that Ag/AgBr nanostructures and the corresponding graphene oxide (GO) hybridized nanocomposite, Ag/AgBr/GO, could be facilely synthesized by means of a surfactant-assisted assembly protocol, where an oil/water microemulsion is used as the synthesis medium. We show that thus-produced nanomaterials could be used as highly efficient and stable plasmonic photocatalysts for the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) pollutant under sunlight irradiation. Compared with the bare Ag/AgBr nanospecies, Ag/AgBr/GO displays distinctly enhanced photocatalytic activity. More importantly, the as-prepared nanostructures exhibit higher photocatalytic activity than that of the corresponding Ag/AgBr-based nanomaterials synthesized viaa water/oil microemulsion and than that of the corresponding Ag/AgCl-based nanospecies synthesized by an oil/water microemulsion. An explanation has been proposed for these interesting findings. Our results suggest that thus-manufactured Ag/AgBr/GO plasmonic photocatalysts are promising alternatives to the traditional UV light or visible-light driven photocatalysts.

Abstract
Stable gold nanoparticle (AuNP) colloids were synthesized in a class of quaternary ammonium-based room-temperature ionic liquids (QAILs), [Me(3)NC(2)H(4)OH](+)[Zn(n)Cl(2n + 1)](-) (n = 1 or 2), by heating in air at 135-145 °C. The QAIL was employed as a solvent, a reducing agent, and as a stabilizer. The size of the QAIL-AuNPs can be varied between 20 and 40 nm by changing the reaction temperature. A symproportionation reaction was employed to further decrease the size of the AuNPs by the addition of Au(3+) ions. The surface covering of QAIL on the AuNPs had a significant impact on their surface plasmon resonance (SPR), which was red-shifted. The AuNPs synthesized by this simple and environmentally friendly reaction can be realized in several minutes and also exhibit high stability and good reproducibility, providing a new facile approach to metal nanoparticle preparation.
