Surface dilational moduli of polymer and blended polymer monolayers spread at air-water interfaces

Influence of Architecture on the Interfacial Properties of Polymers: Linear Chains, Stars, and Microgels

Surface-active polymers have important applications as effective and responsive emulsifiers, foaming agents, and coatings. In this contribution, we explore the impact of the polymer architecture on the behavior at oil-water interfaces by comparing different poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM)-based systems, namely, monolayers of linear and star-shaped macromolecules, ultralow cross-linked, regular cross-linked, and hollow microgels. Compression isotherms were determined experimentally as well as by computer simulations. The latter provides information about the conformational changes of the individual macromolecules as well as the interfacial properties of the monolayer, including the surface structure and the density distribution of an ensemble of interacting macromolecules near an interface. Surprisingly, the isotherms of the linear polymer, of the star polymer, and of the ultralow cross-linked microgel have an identical shape that differs from the isotherms of regular and hollow microgels. We introduced the mass fraction of adsorbed polymer, which gives a measure of the polymer segments contributing to the isotherm in relation to the most flexible architecture, i.e., the linear polymer, and allows a comparison of polymers with different architectures. The data demonstrate that increasing the number of cross-links leads to a significantly lower amount of polymer in the proximity of the interface as the increase in cross-linker reduces the deformability or softness of the polymers at the interface. The volume fraction profiles along the normal to the interface are essentially different in the microgel monolayers as compared to those in the linear and star polymer. The profiles through the microgel contact line and their growth upon initial compression are similar to those of the linear chains. Herewith, the profiles through the center of mass practically do not change upon compression. Therefore, the initial growth in the microgel surface pressure reveals the polymer-like behavior and is related to the deformation of the peripheral part of the microgel. Further compression of the microgel monolayer leads to 3D interactions of the microgels within the aqueous side of the interface and soft colloid-like behavior.

Surface Functionalization of Poly(lactic acid) via Deposition of Hydroxyapatite Monolayers for Biomedical Applications

The surface modification of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) using hydroxyapatite (HAP) particles via Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) approaches has been reported. The HAP monolayer was characterized at the air/water interface and deposited on three-dimensional (3D) printed poly(lactic acid). The deposition of HAP particles using the LS approach led to a larger surface coverage in comparison to the LB method, which produces a less uniform coating because of the aggregation of the particles. After the transfer of HAP on the PLA surface, the wettability values remained within the desired range. The presence of HAP on the surface of the polymer altered the topography and roughness in the nanoscale, as evidenced by the atomic force microscopy (AFM) images. This effect can be beneficial for the osteointegration of polymeric implants at an early stage, as well as for the reduction of the adherence of the microbial biofilm. Overall, the results suggest that the LS technique could be a promising approach for surface modification of PLA by hydroxyapatite with respective advantages in the biomedical field.

Stimuli-Responsive Langmuir Films Composed of Nanoparticles Decorated with Poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) at the Air/Water Interface

The nanotechnology shift from static toward stimuli-responsive systems is gaining momentum. We study adaptive and responsive Langmuir films at the air/water interface to facilitate the creation of two-dimensional (2D) complex systems. We verify the possibility of controlling the assembly of relatively large entities, i.e., nanoparticles with diameter around 90 nm, by inducing conformational changes within an about 5 nm poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) capping layer. The system performs reversible switching between uniform and nonuniform states. The densely packed and uniform state is observed at a higher temperature, i.e., opposite to most phase transitions, where more ordered phases appear at lower temperatures. The induced nanoparticles' conformational changes result in different properties of the interfacial monolayer, including various types of aggregation. The analysis of surface pressure at different temperatures and upon temperature changes, surface potential measurements, surface rheology experiments, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations are accompanied by calculations to discuss the principles of the nanoparticles' self-assembly. Those findings provide guidelines for designing other adaptive 2D systems, such as programable membranes or optical interfacial devices.

A miniaturized radial Langmuir trough for simultaneous dilatational deformation and interfacial microscopy

INNOVATION

Interfacial rheological properties of complex fluid-fluid interfaces are strongly influenced by the film microstructure. Experimental investigations for correlating interfacial morphology and rheology are notoriously challenging. A miniaturized radial Langmuir trough was developed to study complex fluid-fluid interfaces under purely dilatational deformations that operates in tandem with a conventional inverted microscope for simultaneous interfacial visualization.

EXPERIMENTS

Two materials were investigated at an air-water interface: poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PtBMA) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC). Surface pressure measurements made in the radial Langmuir trough were compared with a commercial rectangular Langmuir trough. Interfacial in situ visualization for each material was performed during the compression cycle in the radial trough. Challenges associated with the small size of the radial Langmuir trough, such as the influence of capillary deformation on the measured surface pressure, are also quantified.

FINDINGS

Measured surface pressures between the newly developed radial trough and the rectangular Langmuir trough compare well. Micrographs obtained in the radial Langmuir trough were used to obtain film properties such as Young's modulus. The new advance in colloid and interface science is the ability to capture structure-property relationships of planar interfaces using microscopy and purely dilatational deformation. This will advance the development of constitutive modeling of complex fluid-fluid interfaces.

Unique supramolecular assembly through Langmuir - Blodgett (LB) technique

The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is a way of making supra-molecular assembly in ultrathin films with a controlled layered structure and crystal parameter, which have many envisioned technological applications for optical and molecular electronic devices as well as signal processing and transformation. Probably LB technique is the best method to manipulate materials at molecular level and provides a scope to realize the molecular electronics in reality. In this review article, we have discussed about the general introduction of LB technique and recent development on LB and related system including (i) LB methodology, (ii) characterizations of LB films, (iii) LB films and molecular electronics, (iv) historical review of LB films, (v) research and applications including fundamental research and application towards devices.

Interfacial characteristics of binary polymer blend films spread at the air-water interface

The interfacial characteristics of binary polymer blend films spread at the air-water interface are reviewed, focusing on their surface pressures, interfacial structures, and dilational moduli as a function of the miscibility. Miscible polymer blend films show thermodynamic, structural, and dynamic properties which are a combination of those from both components in the polymer blend present at the air-water interface. No preferential adsorption is observed and the behavior does not depend on the surface concentration regime. In contrast, for immiscible polymer blend films, preferential adsorption of one polymer phase occurs at the air-water interface and the interfacial characteristics in the semi-dilute and concentrated regimes are strongly controlled by one of the components of the adsorbed polymer.

Controlling the Roughness of Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayers

Controlling the surface roughness of thin films with nanoscale precision is of significant interest for the rational design of surface coatings. Although wrinkling and buckling of Langmuir monolayers under compression has been demonstrated for several years, there is currently no method to precisely control this behavior during compression and thereby modify the surface roughness of deposited films. Here, we combine conventional Langmuir phase analysis with a novel dynamic viscoelasticity measurement to simply and accurately observe the jamming transition of monolayers of silica spheres, graphene oxide, and surfactant. By overcompressing beyond this point, the surface roughness of the deposited monolayer can be precisely controlled. This technique could be used to tune the surface properties of a variety of materials from lipids to nanoparticles.

Silicone oil emulsions stabilized by polymers and solid particles

Silicone oil emulsions stabilized by various emulsifiers such as polymers, solid particles alone, and solid particles with pre-adsorbed surfactants or polymers are reviewed, focusing on their emulsion stability and rheological properties as a function of the emulsifier concentration. An increase in the concentration of the emulsifier leads to a decrease in the droplet size and an increase in the emulsion stability, irrespective of the emulsifier. Moreover, the overlapping concentration of polymer can be regarded as a criterion for the preparation of emulsions using polymeric emulsifiers. Changes in the emulsion stability and rheological responses of the emulsions prepared by the solid particles with pre-adsorbed polymers are discussed in terms of the amounts of the emulsifiers adsorbed. For emulsions prepared from hydrophilic silica particles with pre-adsorbed polymers, a decrease in the droplet size of an order of magnitude can be controlled by an increase in the concentration of polymer, whereas hydrophilic silica particles alone cannot produce stable silicone oil emulsions.

Dilatational rheology studies on a semicrystalline ferroelectric copolymer at the air–water interface

Dilatational rheology of Langmuir film of semicrystalline copolymer studied using oscillatory barrier technique show nonlinear behaviour. Evidence for low temperature phase transition, strain hardening and cross over behaviour with frequency is seen.
