Pore-scale physics of ice melting within unconsolidated porous media revealed by non-destructive magnetic resonance characterization

Melting of ice in porous media widely exists in energy and environment applications as well as extraterrestrial water resource utilization. In order to characterize the ice-water phase transition within complicated opaque porous media, we employ the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and imaging (MRI) approaches. Transient distributions of transverse relaxation time T2 from NMR enable us to reveal the substantial role of inherent throat and pore confinements in ice melting among porous media. More importantly, the increase in minimum T2 provides new findings on how the confinement between ice crystal and particle surface evolves inside the pore. For porous media with negligible gravity effect, both the changes in NMR-determined melting rate and our theoretical analysis of melting front confirm that conduction is the dominant heat transfer mode. The evolution of mushy melting front and 3D spatial distribution of water content are directly visualized by a stack of temporal cross-section images from MRI, in consistency with the corresponding NMR results. For heterogeneous porous media like lunar regolith simulant, the T2 distribution shows two distinct pore size distributions with different pore-scale melting dynamics, and its maximum T2 keeps increasing till the end of melting process instead of reaching steady in homogeneous porous media.

The Utilization of Ultrasound for Improving Oil Recovery and Formation Damage Remediation in Petroleum Reservoirs: Review of Most Recent Researches

The ultrasound method is a low-cost, environmentally safe technology that may be utilized in the petroleum industry to boost oil recovery from the underground reservoir via enhanced oil recovery or well stimulation campaigns. The method uses a downhole instrument to propagate waves into the formation, enhancing oil recovery and/or removing formation damage around the wellbore that has caused oil flow constraints. Ultrasonic technology has piqued the interest of the petroleum industry, and as a result, research efforts are ongoing to fill up the gaps in its application. This paper discusses the most recent research on the investigation of ultrasound’s applicability in underground petroleum reservoirs for improved oil recovery and formation damage remediation. New study areas and scopes were identified, and future investigations were proposed.

Review of Phosphorus-Based Polymers for Mineral Scale and Corrosion Control in Oilfield

Production chemistry is an important field in the petroleum industry to study the physicochemical changes in the production system and associated impact on production fluid flow from reservoir to topsides facilities. Mineral scale deposition and metal corrosion are among the top three water-related production chemistry threats in the petroleum industry, particularly for offshore deepwater and shale operations. Mineral scale deposition is mainly driven by local supersaturation due to operational condition change and/or mixing of incompatible waters. Corrosion, in contrast, is an electrochemical oxidation–reduction process with local cathodic and anodic reactions taking place on metal surfaces. Both mineral scaling and metal corrosion can lead to severe operational risk and financial loss. The most common engineering solution for oilfield scale and corrosion control is to deploy chemical inhibitors, including scale inhibitors and corrosion inhibitors. In the past few decades, various chemical inhibitors have been prepared and applied for scaling and corrosion control. Phosphorus-based polymers are an important class of chemical inhibitors commonly adopted in oilfield operations. Due to the versatile molecular structures of these chemicals, phosphorus-based polymeric inhibitors have the advantage of a higher calcium tolerance, a higher thermal stability, and a wider pH tolerance range compared with other types of inhibitors. However, there are limited review articles to cover these polymeric chemicals for oilfield scale and corrosion control. To address this gap, this review article systematically reviews the synthesis, laboratory testing, and field applications of various phosphorus-based polymeric inhibitors in the oil and gas industry. Future research directions in terms of optimizing inhibitor design are also discussed. The objective is to keep the readers abreast of the latest development in the synthesis and application of these materials and to bridge chemistry knowledge with oilfield scale and corrosion control practice.

Mitigation of Mineral Deposition in Carbonate and Sandstone Rocks Using Green Scale Inhibitors

Waterflooding is potentially a viable approach to enhance oil recovery, though its efficacy can profoundly be compromised due to formation damage as a result of inorganic scale deposition. In this study, a series of high-temperature core flooding experiments were conducted to evaluate two green scale inhibitors (SIs) of folic acid and inulin as alternative inhibitors to mitigate mineral deposition. The co-injection of two incompatible brines (with and without SIs) for two flow rates of 0.5 and 3 mL/min into two core samples of dolomite and sandstone was experimentally investigated. The results showed that folic acid would inhibit scale formation as much as 45-49%, at the lower flow rate, compared to inulin with an efficiency of 29-39%, at the higher flow rate. Moreover, computed tomography imaging technique showed that scale formation and fine migration would be dominant mechanisms for formation damage in dolomite and sandstone rocks, respectively. The theoretical study based on surface energy also confirmed the experimental results in terms of the work of adhesion which showed that folic acid would mitigate the calcite deposition on rock surfaces approximately 55%. Finally, a phosphonate-based commercial SI was compared with the green SIs which reaffirmed their potencies.

Minimizing Formation Damage in Drilling Operations: A Critical Point for Optimizing Productivity in Sandstone Reservoirs Intercalated with Clay

The recovery of oil and gas from underground reservoirs has a pervasive impact on petroleum-producing companies’ financial strength. A significant cause of the low recovery is the plugging of reservoir rocks’ interconnected pores and associated permeability impairment, known as formation damage. Formation damage can effectively reduce productivity in oil- and gas-bearing formations—especially in sandstone reservoirs endowed with clay. Therefore, knowledge of reservoir rock properties—especially the occurrence of clay—is crucial to predicting fluid flow in porous media, minimizing formation damage, and optimizing productivity. This paper aims to provide an overview of recent laboratory and field studies to serve as a reference for future extensive examination of formation damage mitigation/formation damage control technology measures in sandstone reservoirs containing clay. Knowledge gaps and research opportunities have been identified based on the review of the recent works. In addition, we put forward factors necessary to improve the outcomes relating to future studies.
