Shear-induced transitions in colloidal and polymeric liquids

Effects of shear-induced crystallization on the complex viscosity of lamellar-structured concentrated surfactant solutions

Material relationships at low temperatures were determined for concentrated surfactant solutions using a combination of rheological experiments, cross-polarized microscopy, calorimetry, and small angle X-ray scattering. A lamellar structured 70 wt% solution of sodium laureth sulfate in water was used as a model system. At cold temperatures (5 °C and 10 °C), the formation of surfactant crystals resulted in extremely high viscosity. The bulk flow behavior of multi-lamellar vesicles (20 °C) and focal conic defects (90 °C) in the lamellar phase was similar. Shear-induced crystallization at temperatures higher than the equilibrium crystallization temperature range resulted in an unusual complex viscosity peak. The effects of processing-relevant parameters including temperature, cooling time, and applied shear were investigated. Knowledge of key low-temperature structure-property-processing relationships for concentrated feedstocks is essential for the sustainable design and manufacturing of surfactant-based consumer products for applications such as cold-water laundry.

Calorimetry of phase transitions in liquid crystal 8CB under shear flow

A differential scanning calorimeter equipped with a shearing system (shear rate of  < 400 s^-1) was developed to elucidate the thermodynamic properties of liquid crystalline phase transitions under shear flow. An analytical method was proposed to accurately estimate the heat flow caused by shear friction to evaluate the transition entropies. The phase transitions of 4'-n-octyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (8CB) under shear flow were investigated using the developed calorimeter. Although several shear-induced transitions for 8CB have been reported in the past using viscosity and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements, only the nematic-isotropic (N-I) and smectic-A-nematic (S_A-N) transitions were detected as heat flow peaks. The N-I transition temperature was almost independent of the shear rate. The S_A-N transition temperature was also independent of the shear rate, but the transition peak was broadened by applying shear flow. For both transitions, the transition entropies were independent of the shear rate. These results suggest that the thermodynamic properties were not considerably changed by shearing because the molecular alignments in the domains were not substantially changed, whereas shearing changed the LC domain directions, which can be detected by viscosity and SAXS measurements.

The Role of Structure in Polymer Rheology: Review

The review is devoted to the analysis of the current state of understanding relationships among the deformation-induced structure transformations, observed rheological properties, and the occurrence of non-linear effects for polymer liquids (melts, solutions, and composites). Three levels of non-linearity are the base for consideration. The first one concerns changes in the relaxation spectra of viscoelastic liquids, which are responsible for weak non-linear phenomena. The second one refers to the strong non-linearity corresponding to such changes in the structure of a medium that leads to the emergence of a new relaxation state of a matter. Finally, the third one describes the deformation-induced changes in the phase state and/or the occurring of bifurcations and instability in flow and reflects the thermodynamic non-linear behavior. From a structure point of view, a common cause of the non-linear effects is the orientation of macromolecules and changes in intermolecular interaction, while a dominant factor in describing fluid dynamics of polymer liquids is their elasticity. The modern understanding of thixotropic effects, yielding viscoplastic materials, deformation-induced phase transition, and the experimental observations, demonstrating direct correlations between the structure and rheology of polymer liquids, are the main objects for discussion. All these topics are reviewed and discussed mainly on the basis of the latest five-year publications.
