Pesticide-loaded colloidal nanodelivery systems; preparation, characterization, and applications

N-doped nano-casted carbon monolith for Pb (II) removal and photocatalytic degradation of thiamethoxam from aqueous solution

Single rock-like N-doped carbon monolith (ND-PFCM) was successfully constructed via nanocasting method. Phenol formaldehyde resin was taken as carbon source and nitrogen was incorporated in monoliths through NaNH2 activation. The synthesized monoliths were used for the removal of Pb (II) from aqueous solution. Various characterization techniques, namely Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) UV-DRS, zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), TGA (thermogravimetric analysis), and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), were utilized to characterize synthesized monolithic samples. The different parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, and time were enquired on the removal efficiency of monoliths toward Pb(II). ND-PFCM exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of 330.03 mg g-1 in 180 min at pH 6. This is attributed to the fact that the better texture properties and presence of nitrogen functional groups enhance the uptake of Pb (II) ions on the monolith surface. In the kinetic studies, pseudo-second-order model fitted best with the experimental data. Furthermore, the removal of thiamethoxam (TM) from aqueous solution was done by using different weight ratios of ND-PFCM under the visible light. The maximum removal efficiency of 97.35% with rate constant of 0.02085 min-1 was obtained in 160 min. Moreover, monoliths exhibited good reusability for five consecutive cycles. The findings suggest that the synthesized monoliths exhibit characteristics suitable and eco-friendly for sustainable use in water treatment applications.

Molecule-to-molecule interactions and physicochemical dynamics create pathways through which nanoparticles cause toxicity. The combination of nanotechnology and environmental sustainability principles leads to the examination of green nanoparticle synthesis. The discourse extends to how nanomaterials penetrate biological systems, their applications, toxicological effects, and dissemination routes. Additionally, this examination delves into the ecological consequences of nanomaterial contamination in natural ecosystems. Employing robust risk assessment methodologies, including the risk allocation framework, is recommended to address potential dangers associated with nanotechnology integration. Establishing standardized, universally accepted guidelines for evaluating nanomaterial toxicity and protocols for nano-waste disposal is urged to ensure responsible stewardship of this transformative technology. Green synthesis of a chlorfenapyr chitosan nanopesticide for maize root application: Reducing environmental pollution and risks to nontarget organisms

Chlorfenapyr (CHL) is a pyrrole insecticide with a novel structure that is used to control resistant pests. However, its weak systemic activity limits its application to crop roots. Herein, a novel CHL formulation with improved effective utilization rates and suitability for root application is developed to avoid or reduce contamination caused by pesticide spraying. Accordingly, we prepared CHL@CS/CMCS nanoparticle (NP) suspensions with a particle size of approximately 100 nm using chitosan (CS) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). These suspensions exhibited better thermal stability, adhesion, permeability and systemic activity than a CHL suspension concentrate (CHL-SC). The nanoformulation deposition rate on maize leaves after spraying was 12.28 mg/kg, significantly higher than that of CHL-SC. The nanosuspension was effectively absorbed and transported by roots after irrigation and was suitable for root application. The efficacy was 89.46-92.36 % against Spodoptera frugiperda at 7 d, 7.5-17.5 times higher than that of CHL-SC. Furthermore, the CHL@CS/CMCS nanosuspension was safer for earthworms. These results suggest that chitosan-based nanoformulations improve the efficacy, utilization efficiency and active period of CHL control, providing a new approach for CHL application, reducing pollutant dispersal and the environmental impacts of pesticide application and facilitating sustainable agricultural production.

Recent developments in nanoemulsions against spoilage in cold-stored fish: A review

Nanoemulsion-based technology is developing rapidly in the food industry, especially in the design of delivery systems for bioactive compounds. This review presents an in-depth understanding of the composition, function, antibacterial mechanism and successful application of nanoemulsions as preservative agents against fish spoilage. The results showed that the inclusion of bioactive substances in the food-grade nanoemulsions encapsulation system could improve its stability, control its release, inhibit the microbial growth and reproduction through a variety of targets. These nanoemulsions can inhibit fish spoilage via reducing microbial load and retarding the oxidation of proteins and lipids, thereby maintaining quality attributes of fish. In addition, nanoemulsions could be coupled with vacuum package for enhancing microbial destruction, retaining nutritional value and extending the shelf-life of fish. Accordingly, nanoemulsions are suggested as a promising strategy to inhibit fish spoilage.

Development of clove oil based nanoencapsulated biopesticide employing mesoporous nanosilica synthesized from paddy straw via bioinspired sol-gel route

Paddy straw (PS) burning is a concerning issue in South Asian countries, clamoring for exploring alternative management strategies. Being a rich source of silica, PS can be a potential nanosilica (SiNPs) source. The current study reports a pioneering approach for green synthesis of high-purity mesoporous SiNPs by sol-gel method using the aqueous extract of Sapindus mukorossi seed pericarp as a stabilizer. The mesoporous nature of SiNPs was harnessed as a carrier for the essential oil to develop the carrier-based formulation. SiNPs were characterized using XRD, EDX, FTIR, FE-SEM, TEM, AFM, DLS, water contact angle, and BET analysis. The synthesized SiNPs possessed a spheroid morphology with an average particle size of 20.34 ± 2.64 nm. XRD results confirmed its amorphous nature. The mesoporous nature of SiNPs was confirmed using BET analysis which showed a cumulative pore volume of 2.059 cm³/g and a high surface area of 746.32 m²/g. The SiNPs were further loaded with clove essential oil (CEO), and the encapsulation of CEO was assessed using UV-Vis, FTIR, and BET analysis. The in-vitro antifungal activity of CEO and CEO-loaded SiNPs (CEO-SiNPs) was evaluated using the agar plate assay. UV-Vis results depicted 62.64% encapsulation of CEO in SiNPs. The antifungal efficacy of CEO-SiNPs against F. oxysporum exhibited minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), i.e., 125 mg/L, while the MIC of CEO was found to be 250 mg/L. The study delivers new insights into the holistic utilization of PS and propitious contribution toward the circular economy and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Application of essential oils as natural biopesticides; recent advances

There is an urgent need for the development of sustainable and eco-friendly pesticide formulations since common synthetic pesticides result in many adverse effects on human health and the environment. Essential oils (EOs) are a mixture of volatile oils produced as a secondary metabolite in medicinal plants, and show activities against pests, insects, and pathogenic fungi. Their chemical composition is affected by several factors such as plant species or cultivar, geographical origin, environmental conditions, agricultural practices, and extraction method. The growing number of studies related to the herbicidal, insecticidal, acaricidal, nematicidal, and antimicrobial effects of EOs demonstrate their effectiveness and suitability as sustainable and environment-friendly biopesticides. EOs can biodegrade into nontoxic compounds; at the same time, their harmful and detrimental effects on non-target organisms are low. However, few biopesticide formulations based on EOs have been turned into commercial practice upto day. Several challenges including the reduced stability and efficiency of EOs under environmental conditions need to be addressed before EOs are widely applied as commercial biopesticides. This work is an overview of the current research on the application of EOs as biopesticides. Findings of recent studies focusing on the challenges related to the use of EOs as biopesticides are also discussed.
