Smart surfaces with reversibly switchable wettability: Concepts, synthesis and applications

The control of droplet motion is a significant challenge, as there has been no simple method for effective manipulation. Utilizing light for the control of droplets offers a promising solution due to its non-contact nature and high degree of controllability. In this study, we present our findings on the translational motion of pre-photomelted droplets composed of azobenzene derivatives on a glass surface when exposed to UV and visible light sources from different directions. These droplets exhibited directional and continuous motion upon light irradiation and this motion was size-dependent. Only droplets with diameters less than 10 μm moved with a maximum velocity of 300 μm min-1. In addition, the direction of the movement was controllable by the direction of the light. The motion is driven by a change in contact angle, where UV or visible light switched the contact angle to approximately 50° or 35°, respectively. In addition, these droplets were also found to be capable carriers for fluorescent quantum dots. As such, droplets composed of photoresponsive molecules offer unique opportunities for designing novel light-driven open-surface microfluidic systems.

A Superhydrophobicity-Slipperiness Switchable Surface with Magneto- and Thermo-responsive Wires for Repelling Complex Droplets

The inefficacy of repelling water droplets laden with macromolecules (complex droplets or diluted polymer solution) is a long-standing shortcoming of superhydrophobic surfaces, which severely limits their reliability in practical applications. Here, we design a surface termed the superhydrophobicity-slipperiness switchable surface (3S surface), which demonstrates superhydrophobicity at room temperature and slipperiness when heated. The 3S surface is composed of magneto-responsive wires coated with superhydrophobic nanoparticles and impregnated with thermoresponsive paraffin, exhibiting lotus leaf-inspired passive water repellency and respiratory cilia-inspired active water repellency at room temperature. When heated, the impregnated paraffin melts and forms a lubricant layer atop the surface structures, exhibiting the pitcher-plant-inspired removal of complex droplets that remain pinned on conventional superhydrophobic surfaces. The counterintuitive integration of superhydrophobicity (a liquid-solid-gas composite system) and slipperiness (a liquid-lubricant-gas system) into a surface and the on-demand switch between them are not only important to the applicability of self-cleaning surfaces to real-world environments, where complex liquids are inevitable, but also provide insights into various interface-related applications.

Superhydrophobic Surface-Assisted Preparation of Microspheres and Supraparticles and Their Applications

Superhydrophobic surface (SHS) has been well developed, as SHS renders the property of minimizing the water/solid contact interface. Water droplets deposited onto SHS with contact angles exceeding 150°, allow them to retain spherical shapes, and the low adhesion of SHS facilitates easy droplet collection when tilting the substrate. These characteristics make SHS suitable for a wide range of applications. One particularly promising application is the fabrication of microsphere and supraparticle materials. SHS offers a distinct advantage as a universal platform capable of providing customized services for a variety of microspheres and supraparticles. In this review, an overview of the strategies for fabricating microspheres and supraparticles with the aid of SHS, including cross-linking process, polymer melting, and droplet template evaporation methods, is first presented. Then, the applications of microspheres and supraparticles formed onto SHS are discussed in detail, for example, fabricating photonic devices with controllable structures and tunable structural colors, acting as catalysts with emerging or synergetic properties, being integrated into the biomedical field to construct the devices with different medicinal purposes, being utilized for inducing protein crystallization and detecting trace amounts of analytes. Finally, the perspective on future developments involved with this research field is given, along with some obstacles and opportunities.

Smart Surfaces with pH-Responsiveness Enhanced by Multiscale Hierarchical Structures Fabricated by Laser Direct Writing

In contemporary applications, smart surfaces capable of altering their properties in response to external stimuli have garnered significant attention. Nonetheless, the efficient creation of smart surfaces exhibiting robust and rapid responsiveness and meticulous controllability on a large scale remains a challenge. This paper introduces an innovative approach to fabricate smart surfaces with strong pH-responsiveness, combining femtosecond laser direct writing (LDW) processing technology with stimulus-responsive polymer grafting. The proposed model involves the grafting of poly(2-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) onto rough and patterned Au/polystyrene (PS) bilayer surfaces through Au-SH bonding. The incorporation of LDW processing technology extends the choice of microstructures and roughness achievable on material surfaces, while PDEAEMA imparts pH responsiveness. Our findings revealed that the difference in contact angle between acidic and basic droplets on the rough PDEAEMA-g-Au surface (∼118°) greatly surpasses that on the flat PDEAEMA-g-Au surface (∼72°). Next, by leveraging the precision control over surface microstructures enabled by the LDW processing technique, this difference was further augmented to ∼127° on the optimized patterned PDEAEMA-g-Au surface. Further, we created two distinct combined smart surfaces with varying wettability profiles on which the hydrophilic-hydrophobic boundaries exhibit reliable asymmetric wettability for acidic and basic droplets. Additionally, we prepared a separator, realizing a better visual distinction between acid and base and collecting them separately. Given the effective abilities found in this study, we postulate that our smart surfaces hold substantial potential across diverse applications, encompassing microfluidic devices, intelligent sensors, and biomedicine.

Unsynchronous conformational transitions induced by the asymmetric adsorption-response of an active diblock copolymer in an inert brush

To exploit the chemical asymmetry of diblock copolymer chains on the design of high-performance switch sensors, we propose an analytically tractable model system which contains an adsorption-responsive diblock copolymer in an otherwise inert brush, and study its phase transitions by using both analytical theory and self-consistent field calculations. The copolymer chain is chemically asymmetric in the sense that the two blocks assume different adsorption strengths, which is characterized by the defined adsorption ratio. We found that the conformation states, the number of stable phases, and transition types are mainly controlled by the length of each block and the adsorption ratio. In particular, when the length of the ungrafted block is longer than the brush chains, and the adsorption ratio is smaller than a critical value, the copolymer chain shows three thermodynamically stable states, and undergoes two unsynchronous transitions, where the two blocks respond to the adsorption in a different manner, when the adsorption changes from weak to sufficiently strong. For this kind of three-state transition, the transition point, transition barrier, and transition width are evaluated by using the self-consistent field method, and their scaling relationship with respect to the system parameters is extracted, which matches reasonably well with the predictions from the analytical theory. The self-consistent field calculations also indicate that the conformational transitions involved in the three-state transition process are sharp with a low energy barrier, and interestingly, barrier-free transitions are observed. Our finding shows that the three-state transitions not only specify a region where high performance unsynchronous switch sensors can be exploited, but may also provide a useful model understanding the unsynchronous biological processes.

Biomimetic materials in oil/water separation: Focusing on switchable wettabilities and applications

Clean water resources are crucial for human society, as the leakage and discharge of oily wastewater not only harm the economy but also disrupt our living environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need for efficient oil-water separation technology. Surfaces with switchable superwetting behavior have garnered significant attention due to their importance in both fundamental research and practical applications. This review introduces the fundamental principles of wettability in the oil-water separation process, the basic theory of switchable wettability, and the mechanisms involved in oil-water separation. Subsequently, the review discusses the research progress, challenges, and issues associated with three conventional types of special wettability materials: superhydrophobic/superoleophilic materials, superhydrophilic/superoleophobic materials, and superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic materials. Most importantly, it provides a detailed exploration of recent advancements in switchable wettability smart materials, which combine elements of traditional special wettability materials. These include stimulus-responsive smart materials, pre-wetting-induced materials, and Janus materials. The discussion covers key response factors, detailed examples of representative works, design concepts, and fabrication strategies. Finally, the review offers a comprehensive summary of switchable superwetting smart materials, encompassing their advantages and disadvantages, persistent challenges, and future prospects.

Photoresponsive Electrospun Fiber Meshes with Switchable Wettability for Effective Fog Water Harvesting in Variable Humidity Conditions

The global water supply worsens yearly with climate change; therefore, the need for sustainable water resources is growing. One of them is fog water collectors with variable surface wettability, with multifunctional designs for utilization worldwide and to address regions with low humidity levels. Therefore, we created fiber meshes with a photoresponsive switchable surface. This study uses electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) meshes, whose wettability is controlled by adding TiO2. The fog water collection performance is studied at high and low humidity levels. With TiO2-PVDF, the electrospun mesh can be converted from hydrophobic to hydrophilic under UV irradiation and transformed back to a hydrophobic state with heat treatment. The switchable meshes were found to be more effective at water collection after UV irradiation at lower fog rates of 200 mL·h-1. The ability to switch between hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties as needed is highly desired in fog collection applications using electrospun meshes, as it can improve overall efficiency after UV irradiation.

A Review of Smart Superwetting Surfaces Based on Shape-Memory Micro/Nanostructures

Bioinspired smart superwetting surfaces with special wettability have aroused great attention from fundamental research to technological applications including self-cleaning, oil-water separation, anti-icing/corrosion/fogging, drag reduction, cell engineering, liquid manipulation, and so on. However, most of the reported smart superwetting surfaces switch their wettability by reversibly changing surface chemistry rather than surface microstructure. Compared with surface chemistry, the regulation of surface microstructure is more difficult and can bring novel functions to the surfaces. As a kind of stimulus-responsive material, shape-memory polymer (SMP) has become an excellent candidate for preparing smart superwetting surfaces owing to its unique shape transformation property. This review systematically summarizes the recent progress of smart superwetting SMP surfaces including fabrication methods, smart superwetting phenomena, and related application fields. The smart superwettabilities, such as superhydrophobicity/superomniphobicity with tunable adhesion, reversible switching between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity, switchable isotropic/anisotropic wetting, slippery surface with tunable wettability, and underwater superaerophobicity/superoleophobicity with tunable adhesion, can be obtained on SMP micro/nanostructures by regulating the surface morphology. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of smart superwetting SMP surfaces are discussed.

Multi-energies assisted and all-weather recovery of crude oil by superhydrophobic melamine sponge

Efficient and safe recovery of high-viscosity marine crude oil spills is still a worldwide challenge. High-viscosity crude oil is difficult to be removed by traditional adsorbent materials. Although some recent developments in photothermal or electric-thermal oil-absorbing materials, the vertical heat transfer inside and the potential hazard of electrical leakage are difficult to be guaranteed. In order to overcome these problems, we polymerized dopamine (DA) in situ on the skeleton surface of the commercial melamine sponge (MS), and further coated the full-wavelength light-absorbing Fe₃O₄ NPs-Graphene (HF-G) on it to obtain the superhydrophobic sponge with excellent photothermal conversion effect, heat conductivity and magnetic heating capabilities (HF-G/PDA@MS). When the thickness of sponge is 5 mm, the HF-G/PDA@MS shows excellent vertical heat conductivity ability, and can absorb about 80 g/g. It also can be combined with an extra electric-heating device to achieve continuous heating to reduce the viscosity and recover crude oil at night or extreme weather. In addition, the temperature of HF-G/PDA@MS can reach about 40 °C by electromagnetic induction heater, indicating that we can use multiple energies-assisted modes to heat the HF-G/PDA@MS to. This work provides a promising solution and theoretical support for all-weather solving offshore crude oil spills pollution and recovery.

Novel Strategy of Polymers in Combination with Silica Particles for Reversible Control of Oil-Water Interface

Hybrid smart emulsification systems are highly applicable in manipulating oil-in-water (O/W) droplets. Herein, novel switchable block polymers containing both zwitterionic and tertiary amine pendent groups were designed and synthesized to combine with charged silica particles to stabilize the O/W emulsion responsive to pH. This study was carried out in O/W emulsions stabilized with the polymer and silica particles under different pH conditions. The emulsion system was also simulated using molecular dynamics simulation to reveal the mechanism at molecular levels, thus gaining insight into the relationships between the emulsifying properties and the molecular interaction of the mixed system. Upon acidification of the continuous aqueous phase, protonated polymers with excellent hydrophilicity were induced by charged silica particles to cause rapid emulsion coalescence. In alkaline media, the mixed system conversely stabilized the O/W emulsions, cutting polymer consumption by over three-quarters. The emulsification and demulsification can be switched alternately by tuning the pH conditions. The applications exhibited excellent efficiency in separating heavy oil/water emulsions and proved the high conversion rate in emulsion polymerization. Overall, with this novel strategy to relieve tedious modifications on particle surfaces and massive consumption of polymers, the designed responsive emulsification systems can impart intelligent and controllable chemical reactivity to emulsions on demand in a more affordable and sustainable way.

Light-Driven Liquid Conveyors: Manipulating Liquid Mobility and Transporting Solids on Demand

The intelligent transport of materials at interfaces is essential for a wide range of processes, including chemical microreactions, bioanalysis, and microfabrication. Both passive and active methods have been used to transport droplets, among which light-based techniques have attracted much attention because they are noncontact, safe, reversible, and controllable. However, conventional light-driven systems also involve challenges related to low transport ability and instability. Because of these shortcomings, technologies that can transport and manipulate droplets and microsolids on the same surface have yet to be realized. The present work demonstrates a light-driven system referred to as a liquid conveyor that enables the transport of both water droplets and microsolids. After the incorporation of an azobenzene-based molecular motor capable of undergoing photoisomerization into the surface liquid layer of this system, an isomerization gradient was induced by exposure to ultraviolet light emitting diodes that induced flow in this layer. Various parameters were optimized, including the concentration of the molecular motor compound, the light intensity, the viscosity of the liquid layer, and the droplet volume. This process eventually achieved the horizontal transport of droplets in any direction at varied rates. As a consequence of the limited heat buildup, the lack of droplet deformation, and extremely small contact angle hysteresis in this system, microsolids on droplets were also transported. This liquid conveyor is a promising platform for high-throughput omni-liquid/solid manipulation in the fields of biotechnology, chemistry, and mechanical engineering.

A Review on Research Progress in Plasma-Controlled Superwetting Surface Structure and Properties

Superwetting surface can be divided into (super) hydrophilic surface and (super) hydrophobic surface. There are many methods to control superwetting surface, among which plasma technology is a safe and convenient one. This paper first summarizes the plasma technologies that control the surface superwettability, then analyzes the influencing factors from the micro point of view. After that, it focuses on the plasma modification methods that change the superwetting structure on the surface of different materials, and finally, it states the specific applications of the superwetting materials. In a word, the use of plasma technology to obtain a superwetting surface has a wide application prospect.
