Abstract
BACKGROUND High temperature stress (HTS) has become a serious threat to rice grain quality and few studies have examined the effects of HTS across multiple stages on rice grain quality. In the present study, we conducted 2 years of HTS treatments under three temperature regimes (32/22 °C, 40/30 °C and 44/34 °C) and HTS durations of 2 days and 4 days at three critical stages: booting, flowering, and a combination of booting and flowering. We employed the heat degree days (HDD) metric, which accounts for both the level and duration of HTS, to quantify the relationships between grain quality traits and HTS. RESULTS The results revealed the diverse effects of HTS on rice grain quality at different stages, durations and temperature levels. HTS significantly (P < 0.05) reduced grain quality, with the highest sensitivities (reduction per 1 °C day-1 increase in HDD) observed at the flowering stage, followed by the combined and booting stages treatments under mild HTS treatment (40/30 °C). However, under extreme HTS treatments (44/34 °C) for 4 days, rice grains subjected to combined HTS treatment experienced complete mortality. CONCLUSION Pre-exposed to HTS at the booting stage within a certain intensity can alleviate the adverse effects of post-flowering HTS on grain quality. This provides valuable insights for assessing the potential impact of multiple HTS events on the grain quality under future climate warming. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
To investigate the dynamic changes in dry matter accumulation in maize after anthesis, we established a logistic model to describe grain filling characteristics (GFC), and analyzed differences between spring and summer maize, and the influence of meteorological factors. The results showed that the logistic model accurately simulated the dynamic changes in grain growth. For spring maize, the fitted hundred-grain weight at maturity was closely related to the average grain filling rate until maturity, days of the active grain filling period, time of the maximum grain filling rate, and duration of the rapid increase in grain weight. For summer maize, it was closely related to the time of the maximum grain filling rate, days of active grain filling period, duration of gradual grain weight, and the rapidly increasing period. The filling characteristics of spring and summer maize differed because of the different meteorological conditions and biological characteristics. The grain filling duration of spring maize was longer than that of summer maize. The maximum grain filling rate of spring maize occurred later than that of summer maize. Temperature and precipitation were the main meteorological factors affecting the hundred-grain weight of spring maize, whereas temperature was the main factor affecting summer maize. The response of spring maize GFC to meteorological factors was more complex than that of summer maize. These results are important for the development of appropriate strategies for improving maize productivity in China.

Abstract
Rice production is threatened by climate change, particularly heat stress (HS). Nonstructural carbohydrates (NSCs) remobilization is a key physiological mechanism that allows rice plants to cope with HS. To investigate the impact of short-term HS on the remobilization of nonstructural carbohydrates (NSCs) in rice, two cultivars (Huaidao-5 and Wuyunjing-24) were subjected to varying temperature regimes: 32/22/27 °C as the control treatment, alongside 40/30/35 °C and 44/34/39 °C, for durations of 2 and 4 days during the booting, flowering, and combined stages (booting + flowering) within phytotrons across the years 2016 and 2017. The findings revealed that the stem's NSC concentration increased, while the panicle's NSCs concentration, the efficiency of NSCs translocation from the stem, and the stem NSC contribution to grain yield exhibited a consistent decline. Additionally, sugar and starch concentrations increased in leaves and stems during late grain filling and maturity stages, while in panicles, the starch concentration decreased and sugar concentration increased. The heat-tolerant cultivar, Wuyunjing-24, exhibited higher panicle NSC accumulation under HS than the heat-sensitive cultivar, Huaidao-5, which had more stem NSC accumulation. The flowering stage was the most vulnerable to HS, followed by the combined and booting stages. Heat degree days (HDDs) were utilized to quantify the effects of HS on NSC accumulation and translocation, revealing that the flowering stage was the most affected. These findings suggest that severe HS makes the stem the primary carbohydrate storage sink, and alleviation under combined HS aids in evaluating NSC accumulation, benefiting breeders in developing heat-tolerant rice varieties.

Abstract
Rice plants are highly sensitive to high-temperature stress, posing challenges to grain yield and quality. However, the impact of high temperatures on the quality of high-quality hybrid rice during the booting stage, as well as the differing effects of the booting and grain-filling stages on grain quality, are currently not well-known. Therefore, four high-quality hybrid rice were subjected to control (CK) and high-temperature stress during the booting (HT1) and grain-filling stages (HT2). Compared to the control, HT1 significantly reduced the spikelets panicle-1 (16.1%), seed setting rate (67.5%), and grain weight (7.4%), while HT2 significantly reduced the seed setting rate (6.0%) and grain weight (7.4%). In terms of quality, both HT1 and HT2 significantly increased chalkiness, chalky grain rate, gelatinization temperature, peak viscosity (PV), trough viscosity (TV), final viscosity (FV), and protein content in most varieties, and significantly decreased grain length, grain width, total starch content, and amylose content. However, a comparison between HT1 and HT2 revealed that the increase in chalkiness, chalky grain rate, PV, TV, and FV was greater under HT2. HT1 resulted in a greater decrease in grain length, grain width, total starch content, and amylose content, as well as an increase in protein content. Additionally, HT1 led to a significant decrease in amylopectin content, which was not observed under HT2. Therefore, future efforts in breeding and cultivating high-quality hybrid rice should carefully account for the effects of high temperatures at different stages on both yield and quality.

Abstract
Increased heat stress during cropping season poses significant challenges to rice production, yet the complex stoichiometry between rice grain yield, quality and high daytime, nighttime temperature remains with gaps in current knowledge. We conducted a meta-analysis using a combined dataset of 1105 experiments for daytime temperature and 841 experiments for nighttime temperature from published literature to investigate the effects of high daytime temperature (HDT) and high nighttime temperatures (HNT) on rice yield and its various components (such as panicle number, spikelet number per panicle, seed set rate, grain weight) and grain quality traits (such as milling yield, chalkiness, amylose and protein contents). We established relationships between rice yield, its components, grain quality and the HDT/HNT, and studied phenotypic plasticity of the traits in response to HDT and HNT. Results showed that HNT had a more detrimental impact on rice yield and quality when compared with the HDT. The optimum daytime and nighttime temperatures for best rice yield were approximately 28 °C and 22 °C, respectively. Grain yield showed a decline by 7% and 6% for each 1 °C increase in HNT and HDT, respectively, when exceeded the optimum temperatures. Seed set rate (i.e., percent fertility) was the most sensitive trait to HDT and HNT and accounted for most of the yield losses. Both the HDT and HNT affected grain quality by increasing chalkiness and decreasing head rice percentage, which may affect marketability of the rice produced. Additionally, HNT was found to significantly impact nutritional quality (e.g., protein content) of rice grains. Our findings fill current knowledge gaps on estimations of rice yield losses and possible economic consequences under high temperatures and suggest that impacts on rice quality should also be considered for selection and breeding of high-temperature tolerant rice varieties in response to HDT and HNT.

Abstract
Rising temperatures and extreme heat events threaten rice production. Half of the global population relies on rice for basic nutrition, and therefore developing heat-tolerant rice is essential. During vegetative development, reduced photosynthetic rates can limit growth and the capacity to store soluble carbohydrates. The photosystem II (PSII) complex is a particularly heat-labile component of photosynthesis. We have developed a high-throughput chlorophyll fluorescence-based screen for photosynthetic heat tolerance capable of screening hundreds of plants daily. Through measuring the response of maximum PSII efficiency to increasing temperature, this platform generates data for modelling the PSII-temperature relationship in large populations in a small amount of time. Coefficients from these models (photosynthetic heat tolerance traits) demonstrated high heritabilities across African (Oryza glaberrima) and Asian (Oryza sativa, Bengal Assam Aus Panel) rice diversity sets, highlighting valuable genetic variation accessible for breeding. Genome-wide association studies were performed across both species for these traits, representing the first documented attempt to characterize the genetic basis of photosynthetic heat tolerance in any species to date. A total of 133 candidate genes were highlighted. These were significantly enriched with genes whose predicted roles suggested influence on PSII activity and the response to stress. We discuss the most promising candidates for improving photosynthetic heat tolerance in rice.

Abstract
Ground-level ozone threatens rice production, which provides staple food for more than half of the world's population. Improving the adaptability of rice crops to ozone pollution is essential to ending global hunger. Rice panicles not only affect grain yield and grain quality but also the adaptability of plants to environmental changes, but the effects of ozone on rice panicles are not well understood. Through an open top chamber experiment, we investigated the effects of long-term and short-term ozone on the traits of rice panicles, finding that both long-term and short-term ozone significantly reduced the number of panicle branches and spikelets in rice, and especially the fertility of spikelets in hybrid cultivar. The reduction in spikelet quantity and fertility because of ozone exposure is caused by changes in secondary branches and attached spikelet. These results suggest the potential for effective adaptation to ozone by altering breeding targets and developing growth stage-specific agricultural techniques.

Abstract
Heat stress during the preflowering panicle initiation stage seriously decreases rice grain weight in an invisible way and has not been given enough attention. The current review aims to (i) specify the heat effects on rice grain weight during the panicle initiation stage compared with the most important grain-filling stage; and (ii) discuss the physiological mechanisms of the decreased rice grain weight induced by heat during panicle initiation in terms of assimilate supply and phytohormone regulation, which are key physiological processes directly regulating rice grain weight. We emphasize that the effect of heat during the panicle initiation stage on rice grain weight is more serious than that during the grain-filling stage. Heat stress during the panicle initiation stage induces alterations in endogenous phytohormones, leading to the inhibition of the photosynthesis of functional leaves (source) and the formation of vascular bundles (flow), thus reducing the accumulation and transport of nonstructural carbohydrates and the growth of lemmata and paleae. The disruptions in the "flow" and restrictions in the preanthesis "source" tissue reduce grain size directly and decrease grain plumpness indirectly, resulting in a reduction in the final grain weight, which could be the direct physiological causes of the lower rice grain weight induced by heat during the panicle initiation stage. We highlight the seriousness of preflowering heat stress on rice grain weight, which can be regarded as an invisible disaster. The physiological mechanisms underlying the lower grain weight induced by heat during panicle initiation show a certain novelty because they distinguish this stage from the grain-filling stage. Additionally, a number of genes that control grain size through phytohormones have been summarized, but their functions have not yet been fully tested under heat conditions, except for the Grain Size and Abiotic stress tolerance 1 (GSA1) and BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE1 (OsBRI1) genes, which are reported to respond rapidly to heat stress. The mechanisms of reduced rice grain weight induced by heat during the panicle initiation stage should be studied in more depth in terms of molecular pathways.

Abstract
Soil salt-alkalization is a common yet critical environmental stress factor for plant growth and development. Discovering and exploiting genes associated with alkaline tolerance in maize (Zea mays L.) is helpful for improving alkaline resistance. Here, an association panel consisting of 200 maize lines was used to identify the genetic loci responsible for alkaline tolerance-related traits in maize seedlings. A total of nine single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and their associated candidate genes were found to be significantly associated with alkaline tolerance using a genome-wide association study (GWAS). An additional 200 genes were identified when the screen was extended to include a linkage disequilibrium (LD) decay distance of r2 ≥ 0.2 from the SNPs. RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis was then conducted to confirm the linkage between the candidate genes and alkali tolerance. From these data, a total of five differentially expressed genes (DEGs; |log2FC| ≥ 0.585, p < 0.05) were verified as the hub genes involved in alkaline tolerance. Subsequently, two candidate genes, Zm00001d038250 and Zm00001d001960, were verified to affect the alkaline tolerance of maize seedlings by qRT-PCR analysis. These genes were putatively involved protein binding and "flavonoid biosynthesis process," respectively, based on Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analyses. Gene promoter region contains elements related to stress and metabolism. The results of this study will help further elucidate the mechanisms of alkaline tolerance in maize, which will provide the groundwork for future breeding projects.

Abstract
Global warming greatly affects the development of rice at different growth stages, thereby deteriorating rice quality. However, the effect of high natural field temperature during reproductive stages on rice quality is unclear. Thus, grain filling dynamics, source-sink characteristics and quality-related traits were compared between two contrasting natural field temperature conditions namely normal (low temperature) (LRT) and hot (high temperature) growth season (HRT) during reproductive stage. Compared with LRT, HRT significantly increased chalky grain rate (about 1.6-3.1%), chalkiness level (about 4.7-22.4%), protein content (about 0.93-1.07%), pasting temperature, setback, and consistence, and decreased total starch content (about 4.6-6.2%). Moreover, HRT significantly reduced the leaf area index (LAI, about 0.54-1.11 m2 m-2), specific leaf weight (SLW, about 1.27-1.44 mg cm-2) and source-sink ratio (leaf-sink ratio and/or stem-sink ratio), shortened the active grain filling period by 3.1-3.2 days, and reduced the rations of dry matter translocation to grain (RDMs). In conclusion, we suggested that significant reduction in assimilate translocation after flowering, resulting in the reduced active grain-filling duration and the poor rice quality (high chalkiness and the poor eating and cooking quality), modulated by source-sink characteristics in response to high natural field temperature during reproductive stage. These results enriched the study of high temperature-stressed rice and served as an important reference for selecting high-quality, heat-tolerant varieties and protecting rice quality under high-temperature conditions.

Abstract
Phloem unloading and loading are associated with stem non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) accumulation and remobilization in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Four rice recombinant inbred lines (R032, R191, R046, and R146) derived from a cross between Zhenshan 97 and Minghui 63 were used to investigate the contributions of stem large and small vascular bundles (SVBs) to NSCs accumulation and translocation. Before heading, the parenchyma cells in stem cortex tissues (PCs) surrounding SVBs had higher starch density than those surrounding large vascular bundles (LVBs). Moreover, the protein levels of sucrose transporters (SUTs), cell wall invertase, sucrose synthase, and adenosine diphosphate glucose pyrophosphorylase, as well as the phloem plasmodesma densities were higher in SVBs than those in LVBs. After heading, starch density decreased more in PCs surrounding SVBs than in LVBs. Also, the protein levels of SUTs, α-amylase, sucrose phosphate synthase and sucrose synthase, the phloem plasmodesma densities in SVBs were higher than those in LVBs. The correlations of the number and total cross-sectional area of SVBs with mass and contribution to yield of transferred NSCs were higher than those of LVBs. Our results suggest that SVBs may have higher contributions to pre-anthesis stem NSCs accumulation and post-anthesis translocation than LVBs, which is potentially attributed to the high level of protein and enzyme involved in stem unloading and loading via apoplastic and symplastic pathways.

Abstract
Impaired carbon metabolism and reproductive development constrain crop productivity during heat stress. Reproductive development is energy intensive, and its requirement for respiratory substrates rises as associated metabolism increases with temperature. Understanding how these processes are integrated and the extent to which they contribute to the maintenance of yield during and following periods of elevated temperatures is important for developing climate-resilient crops. Recent studies are beginning to demonstrate links between processes underlying carbon dynamics and reproduction during heat stress, consequently a summation of research that has been reported thus far and an evaluation of purported associations are needed to guide and stimulate future research. To this end, we review recent studies relating to source-sink dynamics, non-foliar photosynthesis and net carbon gain as pivotal in understanding how to improve reproductive development and crop productivity during heat stress. Rapid and precise phenotyping during narrow phenological windows will be important for understanding mechanisms underlying these processes, thus we discuss the development of relevant high-throughput phenotyping approaches that will allow for more informed decision-making regarding future crop improvement.

Abstract
Extreme temperature events as a consequence of global climate change result in a significant decline in rice production. A two-year phytotron experiment was conducted using three temperature levels and two heating durations to compare the effects of heat stress at booting, flowering, and combined (booting + flowering) stages on the production of photosynthates and yield formation. The results showed that high temperature had a significant negative effect on mean net assimilation rate (MNAR), harvest index (HI), and grain yield per plant (YPP), and a significant positive effect under treatment T3 on mean leaf area index (MLAI) and duration of photosynthesis (DOP), and no significant effect on biomass per plant at maturity (BPPM), except at the flowering stage. Negative linear relationships between heat degree days (HDD) and MNAR, HI, and YPP were observed. Conversely, HDD showed positive linear relationships with MLAI and DOP. In addition, BPPM also showed a positive relationship with HDD, except at flowering, for both cultivars and Wuyunjing-24 at combined stages. The variation of YPP in both cultivars was mainly attributed to HI compared to BPPM. However, for biomass, from the first day of high-temperature treatment to maturity (BPPT-M), the main change was caused by MNAR followed by DOP and then MLAI. The projected alleviation effects of multiple heat stress at combined stages compared to single-stage heat stress would help to understand and evaluate rice yield formation and screening of heat-tolerant rice cultivars under current scenarios of high temperature during the rice-growing season.

Abstract
As global land surface temperature continues to rise and heatwave events increase in frequency, duration, and/or intensity, our key food and fuel cropping systems will likely face increased heat-related stress. A large volume of literature exists on exploring measured and modelled impacts of rising temperature on crop photosynthesis, from enzymatic responses within the leaf up to larger ecosystem-scale responses that reflect seasonal and interannual crop responses to heat. This review discusses (i) how crop photosynthesis changes with temperature at the enzymatic scale within the leaf; (ii) how stomata and plant transport systems are affected by temperature; (iii) what features make a plant susceptible or tolerant to elevated temperature and heat stress; and (iv) how these temperature and heat effects compound at the ecosystem scale to affect crop yields. Throughout the review, we identify current advancements and future research trajectories that are needed to make our cropping systems more resilient to rising temperature and heat stress, which are both projected to occur due to current global fossil fuel emissions.
