Status and Perspective on Green Pesticide Utilizations and Food Security

Pesticides protect crops against pests, and green pesticides are referred to as effective, safe, and eco-friendly pesticides that are sustainably synthesized and manufactured (i.e., green chemistry production). Owing to their high efficacy, safety, and ecological compatibility, green pesticides have become a main direction of global pesticide research and development (R&D). Green pesticides attract attention because of their close association with the quality and safety of agricultural produce. In this review, we briefly define green pesticides and outline their significance, current registration, commercialization, and applications in China, the European Union, and the United States. Subsequently, we engage in an in-depth analysis of the impact of newly launched green pesticides on the environment and ecosystems. Finally, we focus on the potential risks of dietary exposure to green pesticides and the possible hazards of chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity. The status of and perspective on green pesticides can hopefully inspire green pesticide R&D and applications to ensure agricultural production and safeguard human and ecological health.

An I(I)/I(III) Catalysis Route to the Heptafluoroisopropyl Group: A Privileged Module in Contemporary Agrochemistry

The heptafluoroisopropyl group is emerging as a privileged chemotype in contemporary agrochemistry and features prominently in the current portfolio of leading insecticides. To reconcile the expansive potential of this module with the synthetic challenges associated with preparing crowded, fluorinated motifs, I(I)/I(III) catalysis has been leveraged. Predicated on in situ generation of p-TolIF2, this route enables the direct difluorination of α-trifluoromethyl-β-difluorostyrenes in a single operation. This formal addition of fluorine across the alkene π-bond is efficient (up to 91% yield) and is compatible with a broad range of functional groups. The ArCF(CF3)2 moiety is conformationally preorganised, with the C(sp3)–F bond coplanar to the framework of the aryl ring, thereby minimising 1,3-allylic strain. Moreover, orthogonal multipolar C–F···C=O interactions have been identified in a phthalimide derivative. It is envisaged that this programmed vicinal difluorination enabled by a hypervalent iodine species will find application in functional molecule design in a broader sense.

Ryanodine receptor as insecticide target

Ryanodine receptor (RyR) is one of the primary targets of commercial insecticides. The diamide insecticide family, including flubendiamide, chlorantraniliprole, cyantraniliprole, etc, targets insect RyRs and can be used to control a wide range of destructive agricultural pests. The diamide insecticides are highly selective against lepidopteran and coleopteran pests with relatively low toxicity for non-target species, such as mammals, fishes, and beneficial insects. However, recently mutations identified on insect RyRs have emerged and caused resistance in several major agricultural pests throughout different continents. This review paper summarizes the recent findings on structure and function of insect RyRs as insecticide target. Specifically, we examine the structures of RyRs from target and non-target species, which reveals the molecular basis for insecticide action and selectivity. We also examine the structural and functional changes of RyR caused by the resistance mutations. Finally, we examine the progress in RyR structure-based insecticide design, and discuss how this might help the development of new generation of green insecticides.

Synthetic approaches to the 2015-2018 new agrochemicals

In this review, the synthesis of 33 agrochemicals that received an international standardization organization (ISO) name between January 2015 and December 2018 is described. The aim is to showcase the broad range and scope of reactions, reagents and intermediates used to discover and produce the latest active ingredients addressing the crop protection industry's needs.
