Abstract
BACKGROUND The development of biofuels, especially liquid hydrocarbon fuels, has been widely concerned due to the depletion of fossil resources. In order to obtain fuel precursors, the reaction of C-C bond formation is usually carried out with biomass derived ketones/aldehydes as reactants. Acetoin and 2,3-butanediol are two platform chemicals, which are co-existed in fermentation broth and traditionally separated by distillation, and then acetoin could be use as C4 building block to prepare hydrocarbon fuels. In order to mitigate the process complexity, direct aldol condensation reaction of acetoin in fermentation broth was studied in this work. RESULTS A one-pot process of product separation and acetoin derivative synthesis was proposed based on salting-out extraction (SOE). Aldol condensation reaction of acetoin and 5-methyl furfural in different SOE systems was compared, and the results showed that the synthesis of C10 fuel precursors and separation of C10 products and 2,3-butanediol from fermentation broth were achieved in one-pot with ethanolammonium butyrate (EOAB) and K2HPO4 as SOE reagents and catalysts. The SOE and reaction conditions such as the concentrations of EOAB and K2HPO4, reaction temperature and time were optimized. When the system was composed of 6 wt% EOAB-44 wt% K2HPO4 and the mixture was stirred for 6 h at 200 rpm, 40 ℃, the yield of C10 products was 80.7%, and 95.5% 2,3-butanediol was distributed to the top EOAB-rich phase. The exploration of reaction mechanism showed that an imine intermediate was rapidly formed and the subsequent C10 product formation was the key step for aldol condensation reaction. CONCLUSIONS With EOAB and K2HPO4 as SOE reagents and catalysts, one-pot synthesis of fuel precursor from acetoin fermentation broth was achieved without prior purification. A yield of 80.7% for C10 products was obtained which was accumulated at the interface of two aqueous-phase, and 95.5% 2,3-BD was distributed to the top EOAB-rich phase. This work provides a new integration process of product separation and derivative synthesis from fermentation broth based on ionic liquid SOE.

Salting-out re-distillation combined with sensory-directed analysis to recover odor-active compounds for improving the flavor quality of instant Pu-erh tea. Food Chem X 2022; 14:100310. Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop an effective recovery technology of odor-active compounds (OACs) to improve the flavor quality of instant Pu-erh tea (IPT) based on their released behaviors. Salting-out re-distillation (SRD) combined with sensory-directed analysis was developed. The contributing factors, including the soaking time of tea, recovery volume of condensed water of first distillation, amount of sodium chloride, recovery volume of condensed water of SRD, and re-use times of sodium chloride, were studied systematically. Under optimized conditions, 41 OACs were recovered in the first distillation, and the total recovery rate was 83.94%. Forty-one OACs were recovered via SRD, and the total recovery rate reached 72.29%, significantly better than membrane method (33.46%). The IPT prepared by adding OACs that recovered via SRD showed strong aroma attributes intensities and good coordination. This developed method can provide a more effective scheme to improve the flavor quality of IPT.

Abstract
Herein, an ionic-liquid-based effervescence-enhanced magnetic solid-phase extraction (ILE-MSPE) approach for the extraction/concentration of organophosphorus pesticides in waters is reported with high stability and portability for rapid sample pretreatment in the field. The ionic-liquid-based magnetic effervescent tablet, composed of magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) as an alkaline source, and an ionic liquid ([C6MIM][PF6]), played triple functions: extractant, dispersant, and retrieving agent. Based on the one-factor-at-a-time method, the important variables for the ILE-MSPE approach were optimized as follows: as an extractant, 70 μL of [C6MIM][PF6]; molar ratio of alkaline to acidic sources (Na2CO3 : H2C4H4O6) as 1 : 1; and mass of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) of 30 mg. By integrating HPLC-DAD detection, the ILE-MSPE approach offered the limits of detection of 0.14-0.22 μg L-1 and fortified recoveries of 81.4-97.6% for three representative species (methamidophos, phoxim, and parathion) in water samples. The relative standard deviations were lower than 4.9% for both the intra-day and inter-day precision. Overall, the newly developed method is environmentally benign, time-saving, and feasible for outdoor application.

Ionic liquid-based multi-stage sugaring-out extraction of lactic acid from simulated broth and actual lignocellulosic fermentation broth. BIORESOUR BIOPROCESS 2021; 8:123. [PMID: 38650301 PMCID: PMC10992251 DOI: 10.1186/s40643-021-00481-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/07/2021] [Accepted: 12/06/2021] [Indexed: 11/10/2022] Open
Abstract
In this study, ionic liquid-based sugaring-out extraction was developed to separate lactic acid from the synthetic solution and actual lignocellulosic fermentation broth. Except for [EOHmim]BF4, the ILs with BF4- and OTF- anion can form aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) with the aid of saccharides. With the same kind of saccharides, the ATPS formation ability of ILs could be promoted by increasing the side-chain length of ILs in the order of [Hmim]BF4 ≈ [Bmim]BF4 ˃ [Emim]BF4 due to the decrease in ILs' kosmotropicity. On the other hand, for the same type of ILs, an ATPS was formed more easily with glucose than with xylose. When IL concentration varied from 35% (w/w) to 40% (w/w) at a low glucose concentration of 15% (w/w), an interesting phase reversal was observed. When lactic acid was undissociated at pH 2.0, 51.8% LA and 92.3% [Bmim]BF4 were partitioned to the top phase, and 97.0% glucose to the bottom phase using an ATPS consisting of 25% (w/w) glucose and 45% (w/w) IL. The total recovery of LA would increase to 89.0% in three-stage sugaring-out extraction from synthetic solution. In three-stage sugaring-out extraction from the filtered and unfiltered fermentation broth obtained via simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) of acid-pretreated corn stover by the microbial consortium, the total recovery of LA was 89.5% and 89.8%, respectively. Furthermore, the total removal ratio of cells and pigments from the unfiltered broth was 68.4% and 65.4%, respectively. The results support IL-based sugaring-out extraction as a potential method for the recovery of lactic acid from actual fermentation broth.
