Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Anatomic features of neuromas have been explored in imaging studies. However, there has been limited research into these features using resected, ex vivo human neuroma specimens. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence that time may have on neuroma growth and size, and the clinical significance of these parameters. METHODS Patients who underwent neuroma excision between 2022 through 2023 were prospectively included in this study. Neuroma specimens were obtained after operative resection. Standardized neuroma size measurements, expressed as a neuroma-to-nerve ratio (NNR), were conducted with ImageJ software. Pain data (numeric rating scale, 0-10) were prospectively recorded during preoperative evaluation, and patient factors were collected from chart reviews. RESULTS Fifty terminal neuroma specimens from 31 patients were included, with 94.0% of the neuromas obtained from individuals with amputations. Most neuromas were excised from the lower extremities (n = 44, 88.0%). The neuromas had a median NNR of 2.45, and the median injury to neuroma excision interval was 6.3 years. Larger NNRs were associated with a longer injury to neuroma excision interval and with a smaller native nerve diameter. In addition, sensory nerves were associated with a larger NNR compared with mixed nerves. NNR was not associated with preoperative pain or with anatomical nerve distribution. CONCLUSION This study suggests that neuromas seem to continue to grow over time and that smaller nerves may form relatively larger neuromas. In addition, sensory nerves develop relatively larger neuromas compared with mixed nerves. Neuroma size does not appear to correlate with pain severity. These findings may stimulate future research efforts and contribute to a better understanding of symptomatic neuroma development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHFs) are the most common elbow fractures in children. Traumatic median nerve injury and isolated lesions of its pure forearm motor branch, anterior interosseus nerve (AIN), have both been independently reported as complications of displaced SCHFs. Our main objectives were to characterize the neurological syndrome to distinguish median nerve from AIN lesions and to determine the prognosis of median nerve lesions after displaced SCHFs. METHODS Ten children were prospectively followed for an average of 11.6 months. Patients received a standardized clinical examination and high-resolution ultrasound of the median nerve every 1-3 months starting 1-2 months after trauma. Electrodiagnostic studies were performed within the first 4 months and after complete clinical recovery. RESULTS All children shared a clinical syndrome with predominant but not exclusive affection of AIN innervated muscles. High-resolution ultrasound uniformly excluded persistent nerve entrapment and neurotmesis requiring revision surgery but visualized post-traumatic median nerve neuroma at the fracture site in all patients. Electrodiagnostic studies showed axonal motor and sensory median nerve neuropathy. All children achieved complete functional recovery under conservative management. Motor recovery required up to 11 months and differed between involved muscles. CONCLUSIONS It was shown that neurological deficits of the median nerve in displaced SCHFs exceeded an isolated AIN lesion. Notably, detailed neurological follow-up examinations and sonographic exclusion of persistent nerve compression were able to guide conservative therapy in affected children. Under these conditions the prognosis of median nerve lesions was excellent despite severe initial deficits, development of neuroma and axonal injury.

Abstract
The first part of the guidelines and recommendations for musculoskeletal ultrasound, produced under the auspices of the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB), provides information about the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound for assessing extraarticular structures (muscles, tendons, entheses, ligaments, bones, bursae, fasciae, nerves, skin, subcutaneous tissues, and nails) and their pathologies. Clinical applications, practical points, limitations, and artifacts are described and discussed for every structure. After an extensive literature review, the recommendations have been developed according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine and GRADE criteria and the consensus level was established through a Delphi process. The document is intended to guide clinical users in their daily practice.

Abstract
Martin-Gruber communicating branch may be a confounding factor in the diagnosis of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow. It may also lead to a surprising level of motor function conservation despite evident neuropathy. We present a patient with ulnar nerve section at the elbow who underwent early treatment by nerve suture. At 7 months, function was good, despite sonographic findings of neurotmesis at the elbow. Electroneurography revealed Martin-Gruber communicating branch. This type of communicating branch can be associated with functional conservation despite ulnar nerve section. Electrophysiological and ultrasound findings can be highly contributive in defining these conditions.

Abstract
Die Sonografie von Nerven und Muskeln hat sich zu einem essenziellen Baustein der Diagnostik von Erkrankungen des peripheren Nervensystems und der Muskulatur entwickelt. Häufig gelingt eine umfassende Aufklärung einer Läsion erst durch die Kombination aus Kenntnissen über eine elektrophysiologisch nachgewiesene gestörte Funktion des Nervs und über sonografisch festgestellte morphologische Veränderungen des Nervs und des angrenzenden Gewebes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Characterize the appearance of digital nerve injuries in different ultrasound planes and correlate the presence and size of neuromas with time from injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS Surgically confirmed nerve injuries were retrospectively evaluated. Appearances of the nerve injury in the available imaging planes were reviewed by two readers. Associations between presence and size of neuroma with time from injury were analyzed. RESULTS Injuries of 29 digital nerves (3 incomplete lacerations, 17 complete lacerations, 6 with 7 stump neuromas, 3 neuromas-in-continuity) noted on ultrasound were surgically confirmed. Among the 20 lacerations, long-axis images were obtained in 15, of which 10 depicted the injury and 4 did not. Among the 10 depicting the injury in long axis, 2 showed a discrete gap, and 7 showed the nerve obscured by laceration tissue without a gap. In short axis, the nerve injury was visible in all 20, and nerve laceration was seen as a discrete gap in 2, and obscuration by laceration tissue in 14. Neuromas were hypoechoic and well-defined. There was a positive association between time and presence of neuroma (OR = 1.3, p = 0.002). Correlations between time and cross-sectional area (rs = 0.45) and volume (rs = 0.57) of neuromas were moderately positive. CONCLUSION Ultrasound long axis may be less useful, and those short axis may be more reliable for assessing digital nerve injuries than previously reported. Neuromas are hypoechoic and well-defined, and their size can vary based on time from injury.

Abstract
(1) Background: Ultrasound is a well-known tool used for the diagnosis and management of many diseases, including peripheral neuropathies. The main aim of this study was the lexical analysis of the literature on this topic considering the most cited words and the relationship between the words and the papers. Furthermore, a geographical analysis was performed to evaluate the worldwide prevalence. (2) Methods: We performed a literature search on PubMed, and we calculated the occurrence of the words indicating nerves and the body parts. Furthermore, we calculated the number of papers for each country, considering the affiliation of the first author. Finally, to describe the relationships between the words and the papers, we used the 30 most cited words, and we built a matrix describing in which papers a word was cited. This matrix was used to create a network based on the graph theory using Gephi 0.9.2 software. (3) Results: The most cited nerves were median and ulnar ones, and the most cited body parts were hand, wrist and elbow. The United States of America was the most productive country, with 80 papers. The graph of the network showed the importance of ultrasound as support for therapy. (4) Conclusions: The study represents a lexical analysis of the literature and shows information about subjects, authors and relationships of the papers. This may be helpful for better understanding and evaluation of the situation of the current literature.

Abstract
Peripheral nerve injury is a potentially debilitating disorder that occurs in an estimated 2–3% of all patients with major trauma, in a similar percentage of medical procedures. The workup of these injuries has traditionally been clinical, combined with electrodiagnostic testing. However, this has limitations, especially in the acute phase of the trauma or lack of any recovery, when it is very important to determine nerve continuity and perform surgical exploration and repair in the case of the complete transection or intraneural fibrosis. Ultrasound can help in those situations. It is a versatile imaging technique with a high sensitivity of 93% for detecting focal nerve lesions. Ultrasound can assess the structural integrity of the nerve, neuroma formation and other surrounding abnormalities of bone or foreign bodies impeding the nerve. In addition, this can help to prevent iatrogenic nerve injury by marking the nerve before the procedure. This narrative review gives an overview of why and how nerve ultrasound can play a role in the detection, management and prevention of peripheral nerve injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Morton's neuroma (MN) is often a diagnostic dilemma lacking a gold standard set of diagnostic criteria. Advanced imaging of MN is evolving including ultrasonography. The current study aimed to analyze the relationship between ultrasonographic findings and symptoms, clinical data, and operative findings in a subgroup of patients. METHODS We evaluated physical examination, ultrasonographic findings, symptoms, and in a subgroup, the operative findings for Morton's neuroma. We analyzed the symptoms, the findings on physical examination, and ultrasonography data and performed a statistical correlation between them. A total of 175 patients were seen for suspected Morton's neuroma during the last 7 years. RESULTS Neuropathic pain of the toes was reported in 63% of patients. Presence of ultrasonographic findings suggesting Morton's neuroma was observed in 77% of cases. A mild significant relationship between neuropathic pain and positive ultrasonographic findings was observed. We found a strong correlation between ultrasonographic and clinical evaluation, but more than half with clinical negative Morton's neuroma had positive findings at ultrasonography. In the subgroup of operatively treated patients (n = 44) surgery confirmed Morton's neuroma in all patients who had positive ultrasonography findings. CONCLUSIONS The current study suggests that the association of ultrasonographic evaluation and clinical evaluation can be very useful for the management of Morton's neuroma. Our study could help with the development of a multiperspective approach in the diagnosis of Morton's neuroma. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level II, prospective cohort survey study.

Abstract
Over the last two decades, dozens of applications have emerged for ultrasonography in neuromuscular disorders. We wanted to measure its impact on practice in laboratories where the technique is in frequent use. After identifying experts in neuromuscular ultrasound and electrodiagnosis, we assessed their use of ultrasonography for different indications and their expectations for its future evolution. We then identified the earliest papers to provide convincing evidence of the utility of ultrasound for particular indications and analyzed the relationship of their date of publication with expert usage. We found that experts use ultrasonography often for inflammatory, hereditary, traumatic, compressive and neoplastic neuropathies, and somewhat less often for neuronopathies and myopathies. Usage significantly correlated with the timing of key publications in the field. We review these findings and the extensive evidence supporting the value of neuromuscular ultrasound. Advancement of the field of clinical neurophysiology depends on widespread translation of these findings.

Abstract
The cause of posthysterectomy pain is frequently undiagnosed, and a presumed diagnosis of adhesions is made. Surgical division of adhesions often fails to alleviate the pain. As a result, posthysterectomy pain is seldom investigated despite being associated with a significant deterioration in the quality of life. We report a case of posthysterectomy bilateral neuroma of the autonomic nerves to the ovary that leads to significant pelvic pain. Excision of these neuromas resulted in complete resolution of pelvic pain and significant improvement in the quality of life. This interesting observation does not support the widespread use of laparoscopy for posthysterectomy pain but should be considered in patients with pain that occurs at an interval after hysterectomy who have had no pelvic pain preceding the hysterectomy.
