Muscle contractile properties directly influence shared synaptic inputs to spinal motor neurons

Alpha band oscillations in shared synaptic inputs to the alpha motor neuron pool can be considered an involuntary source of noise that hinders precise voluntary force production. This study investigated the impact of changing muscle length on the shared synaptic oscillations to spinal motor neurons, particularly in the physiological tremor band. Fourteen healthy individuals performed low-level dorsiflexion contractions at ankle joint angles of 90° and 130°, while high-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) was recorded from the tibialis anterior (TA). We decomposed the HDsEMG into motor units spike trains and calculated the motor units' coherence within the delta (1-5 Hz), alpha (5-15 Hz), and beta (15-35 Hz) bands. Additionally, force steadiness and force spectral power within the tremor band were quantified. Results showed no significant differences in force steadiness between 90° and 130°. In contrast, alpha band oscillations in both synaptic inputs and force output decreased as the length of the TA was moved from shorter (90°) to longer (130°), with no changes in delta and beta bands. In a second set of experiments (10 participants), evoked twitches were recorded with the ankle joint at 90° and 130°, revealing longer twitch durations in the longer TA muscle length condition compared to the shorter. These experimental results, supported by a simple computational simulation, suggest that increasing muscle length enhances the muscle's low-pass filtering properties, influencing the oscillations generated by the Ia afferent feedback loop. Therefore, this study provides valuable insights into the interplay between muscle biomechanics and neural oscillations. KEY POINTS: We investigated whether changes in muscle length, achieved by changing joint position, could influence common synaptic oscillations to spinal motor neurons, particularly in the tremor band (5-15 Hz). Our results demonstrate that changing muscle length from shorter to longer induces reductions in the magnitude of alpha band oscillations in common synaptic inputs. Importantly, these reductions were reflected in the oscillations of muscle force output within the alpha band. Longer twitch durations were observed in the longer muscle length condition compared to the shorter, suggesting that increasing muscle length enhances the muscle's low-pass filtering properties. Changes in the peripheral contractile properties of motor units due to changes in muscle length significantly influence the transmission of shared synaptic inputs into muscle force output. These findings prove the interplay between muscle mechanics and neural adaptations.

Effects of exhaustive whole-body exercise and caffeine ingestion on muscle contractile properties in healthy men

BACKGROUND

The influence of exhaustive whole-body exercise and caffeine ingestion on electromechanical delay (EMD) has been underexplored. This study investigated the effect of exhaustive cycling exercise on EMD and other parameters of muscle contractile properties and the potential ability of caffeine to attenuate the exercise-induced impairments in EMD and muscle contractile properties.

METHODS

Ten healthy men cycled until exhaustion (88±2% of V̇O2max) on two separate days after ingesting caffeine (5 mg.kg-1 of body mass) or cellulose (placebo). Parameters of muscle contractile properties of the quadriceps muscles were assessed via volitional and electrically evoked isometric contractions, performed before and 50 minutes after ingestion of the capsules, and after exercise. Muscle recruitment during volitional contractions was determined via surface electromyography.

RESULTS

Exhaustive cycling exercise did not affect volitional and relaxation EMD (P>0.05) but increased evoked EMD. In addition, the exhaustive cycling exercise also increased muscle recruitment at the beginning of volitional isometric muscle contraction (P<0.05). The peak twitch force, maximal rate of twitch force development, and twitch contraction time were all compromised after exhaustive cycling exercise (P<0.05). Acute caffeine ingestion had no effect on muscle contractile properties (P>0.05), except that caffeine increased twitch contraction time at postexercise (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Exercise-induced decline in peripheral components of the EMD might be compensated by an increase in the muscle recruitment. In addition, acute caffeine ingestion had minimal influence on exercise-induced changes in muscle contractile proprieties.

Alterations in Physical Demands During Virtual/Augmented Reality-Based Tasks: A Systematic Review

The digital world has recently experienced a swift rise in worldwide popularity due to Virtual (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) devices. However, concrete evidence about the effects of VR/AR devices on the physical workload imposed on the human body is lacking. We reviewed 27 articles that evaluated the physical impact of VR/AR-based tasks on the users using biomechanical sensing equipment and subjective tools. Findings revealed that movement and muscle demands (neck and shoulder) varied in seven and five studies while using VR, while in four and three studies during AR use, respectively, compared to traditional methods. User discomfort was also found in seven VR and three AR studies. Outcomes indicate that interface and interaction design, precisely target locations (gestures, viewing), design of virtual elements, and device type (location of CG as in Head-Mounted Displays) influence these alterations in neck and shoulder regions. Recommendations based on the review include developing comfortable reach envelopes for gestures, improving wearability, and studying temporal effects of repetitive movements (such as effects on fatigue and stability). Finally, a guideline is provided to assist researchers in conducting effective evaluations. The presented findings from this review could benefit designers/evaluations working towards developing more effective VR/AR products.

Combination of Chemically Characterized Pomegranate Extract and Hydrophilic Vitamins against Prolonged Fatigue: A Monocentric, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial

Prolonged fatigue is associated with non-pathological causes and lacks an established therapeutic approach. The current study is aimed at assessing the efficacy of a new food supplement (Improve™) based on a chemically characterized pomegranate extract and hydro-soluble vitamins (B complex and C). UHPLC-HRMS analysis of pomegranate extract showed the presence of 59 compounds, with gallotannins and ellagitannins being the most abundant phytochemicals. For the clinical study, 58 subjects were randomized into two groups, 1 and 2 (n = 29, each), which received either the food supplement or placebo. The effects of the food supplement against fatigue were assessed via validated questionnaires, recorded at time intervals t0 (at baseline), t1 (after 28 days), t2 (56 days), and t3 (after follow-up) in combination with the analysis of biochemical markers at t0 and t2. Fatigue severity scale (FSS) questionnaire scores were significantly decreased at the t2 and t3 time intervals in subjects treated with the food supplements, while the effect of the food supplement on a 12-Item Short Form Survey (SF-12) was not considerable. Moreover, the food supplement did not significantly affect biochemical parameters associated with fatigue and stress conditions. This study shows that the food supplement tested reduces prolonged fatigue following two months of supplementation in healthy subjects with mild prolonged fatigue.

The Effects of Posture and Dynamic Stretching on the Electromechanical Delay of the Paraspinal Muscles

Electromechanical delay (EMD) of muscle is influenced in part by its in-series arrangement with connective tissue. Therefore, studying EMD might provide a better understanding of the muscle-connective tissue interaction. Here, EMD of the thoracic and lumbar erector spinae muscles were investigated under conditions that could influence muscle-connective tissue interaction. A total of 19 participants performed isometric back extension contractions in 3 different postures that influence lumbar spine angle: sitting, standing, and kneeling. They then performed a 15-minute dynamic stretching routine and repeated the standing contractions. Mean lumbar flexion angles of 0.5°, 9.9°, and 19.8° were adopted for standing, kneeling, and sitting, respectively. No statistically significant differences in the thoracic erector spinae EMD were found between the different postures. Lumbar erector spinae EMD was significantly longer in the sitting (94.1 ms) compared to the standing (69.9 ms) condition, with no differences compared to kneeling (79.7 ms). There were no statistically significant differences of the thoracic or lumbar erector spinae EMDs before and after dynamic stretching. These results suggest that dynamic stretching does not affect the mechanical behavior of the muscle-tendon-aponeurosis units in a way that alters force generation and transmission, but a sitting posture can alter how force is transmitted through the musculotendinous complex of the lumbar erector spinae.

Robust tracking for functional electrical stimulation cycling with unknown time-varying input delays: A switched systems approach

Motorized functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling has been demonstrated to have numerous health benefits for individuals suffering from neurological disorders. FES-cycling is usually designed to track the desired trajectories in real time. However, there are input delays between the exertion of the stimulation and the corresponding muscle contraction that potentially destabilize the system and undermine training efforts. Meanwhile, muscle fatigue gives rise to a time-varying input delay and decreased force. Moreover, switching between FES and motor control can be chattering and destabilizing owing to the high frequency. This article constructs Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals to analyze the stability and robustness of the nonlinear cycling system with time-varying input delay. A new average dwell time condition is then provided to ensure the input-to-state stability of the considered systems. Finally, numerical simulations are illustrated to verify the effectiveness of the developed controller.

Role of Knee and Ankle Extensors' Muscle-Tendon Properties in Dynamic Balance Recovery from a Simulated Slip

Participants exposed to a simulated slip with forward loss of balance (FLB) develop large lower limb joint moments which may be a limiting factor for those whose muscle-tendon units’ (MTUs) properties are deteriorated. Whether the age-related decline in these properties limits participants’ capacity to recover their balance following a slip with FLB remains unclear. We combined isokinetic dynamometry, ultrasound and EMG to understand how knee extensor and ankle plantarflexor muscle strength and power, rate of moment development, electromechanical delay, and tendon stiffness affected the balance of young (25.3 ± 3.9 years) and older adults (62.8 ± 7.1 years) when recovering from a single slip with FLB triggered whilst walking on a split-belt instrumented treadmill. Except for the patellar tendon’s stiffness, knee extensor and ankle plantarflexor electromechanical delays, older adults’ MTUs properties were deteriorated compared to those of young participants (p < 0.05). We found no significant relationship between age or the MTUs properties of participants and balance recovery. These findings provide additional support that neither maximal nor explosive strength training are likely to be successful in preventing a fall for healthy older adults, and that other type of interventions, such as task-specific training that has already proved efficacious in reducing the risk of falling, should be developed.

Online tracking of the phase difference between neural drives to antagonist muscle pairs in essential tremor patients

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation has been applied in tremor suppression applications. Out-of-phase stimulation strategies applied above or below motor threshold result in a significant attenuation of pathological tremor. For stimulation to be properly timed, the varying phase relationship between agonist-antagonist muscle activity during tremor needs to be accurately estimated in real-time. Here we propose an online tremor phase and frequency tracking technique for the customized control of electrical stimulation, based on a phase-locked loop (PLL) system applied to the estimated neural drive to muscles. Surface electromyography signals were recorded from the wrist extensor and flexor muscle groups of 13 essential tremor patients during postural tremor. The EMG signals were pre-processed and decomposed online and offline via the convolution kernel compensation algorithm to discriminate motor unit spike trains. The summation of motor unit spike trains detected for each muscle was bandpass filtered between 3 to 10 Hz to isolate the tremor related components of the neural drive to muscles. The estimated tremorogenic neural drive was used as input to a PLL that tracked the phase differences between the two muscle groups. The online estimated phase difference was compared with the phase calculated offline using a Hilbert Transform as a ground truth. The results showed a rate of agreement of 0.88 ± 0.22 between offline and online EMG decomposition. The PLL tracked the phase difference of tremor signals in real-time with an average correlation of 0.86 ± 0.16 with the ground truth (average error of 6.40° ± 3.49°). Finally, the online decomposition and phase estimation components were integrated with an electrical stimulator and applied in closed-loop on one patient, to representatively demonstrate the working principle of the full tremor suppression system. The results of this study support the feasibility of real-time estimation of the phase of tremorogenic neural drive to muscles, providing a methodology for future tremor-suppression neuroprostheses.

Sex differences in cognitive-motor components of braking in older adults

Fast and accurate braking is essential for safe driving and relies on efficient cognitive and motor processes. Despite the known sex differences in overall driving behavior, it is unclear whether sex differences exist in the objective assessment of driving-related tasks in older adults. Furthermore, it is unknown whether cognitive-motor processes are differentially affected in men and women with advancing age. We aimed to determine sex differences in the cognitive-motor components of the braking performance in older adults. Fourteen men (63.06 ± 8.53 years) and 14 women (67.89 ± 11.81 years) performed a braking task in a simulated driving environment. Participants followed a lead car and applied a quick and controlled braking force in response to the rear lights of the lead car. We quantified braking accuracy and response time. Importantly, we also decomposed response time in its cognitive (pre-motor response time) and motor (motor response time) components. Lastly, we examined whether sex differences in the activation and coordination of the involved muscles could explain differences in performance. We found sex differences in the cognitive-motor components of braking performance with advancing age. Specifically, the cognitive processing speed is 27.41% slower in women, while the motor execution speed is 24.31% slower in men during the braking task. The opposite directions of impairment in the cognitive and motor speeds contributed to comparable overall braking speed across sexes. The sex differences in the activation of the involved muscles did not relate to response time differences between men and women. The exponential increase in the number of older drivers raises concerns about potential effects on traffic and driver safety. We demonstrate the presence of sex differences in the cognitive-motor components of braking performance with advancing age. Driving rehabilitation should consider differential strategies for ameliorating sex-specific deficits in cognitive and motor speeds to enhance braking performance in older adults.

Influence of muscle fatigue on motor task performance of the hand and wrist: A systematic review

Muscle fatigue is represented as a reduction in force production capability; however, fatigue does not necessarily result in performance impairments. As the distal upper limb serves as the end effector when interacting or manipulating objects, it is important to understand how muscle fatigue may impact motor functionality. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature to identify how various aspects of motor performance of the distal upper limb are impaired following muscle fatigue. Four databases were searched using 23 search terms describing the distal upper limb, muscle fatigue, and various performance metrics. A total of 4561 articles were screened with a total of 28 articles extracted and critically appraised. Evidence extracted indicates that muscle fatigue results in unique impairments based on the type of motor performance being evaluated. Furthermore, much data suggests that muscle fatigue does not result in consistent, predictable performance impairments, particularly while performing submaximal tasks. Additionally, magnitude of fatigue does not directly correlate with reductions in performance outcomes at the hand and wrist. Fatiguing protocols used highlighted the importance of fatigue specificity. When fatiguing and performance tasks are similar, performance impairment is likely to be observed. The numerous muscles found in the hand and wrist, often considered redundant, play a critical role in maintaining task performance in the presence of muscle fatigue. The presence of motor abundance (e.g. multiple muscles with similar function) is shown to reduce the impairment in multiple performance metrics by compensating for reduced function of fatigued muscles. Continued exploration into various fatiguing protocols (i.e. maximal or submaximal) will provide greater insights into performance impairments in the distal upper limb.

Effects of 4-weeks of elastic variable resistance training on the electrochemical and mechanical components of voluntary electromechanical delay durations

PURPOSE

Literature is conflicted on whether electromechanical delay durations decrease following resistance training programs. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the contributions and durations of the electrochemical (EMD_E-M) and mechanical (EMD_M-F) components to the overall electromechanical delay (EMD_E-F) during step isometric muscle actions following 4-weeks of structured, multi-joint, lower-body variable resistance training (VRT) program.

METHODS

Twelve men performed 4-weeks of VRT leg press training utilizing combination of steel plates (80% total load) and elastic bands (20% total load). Training consisted of 3 sets of 10 repetitions at a 10 repetition maximum load, 3 day week^-1 for 4-weeks. EMD_E-M, EMD_M-F, and EMD_E-F was measured at Baseline, Week-2, and Week-4 during voluntary step isometric muscle actions (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction) from the vastus lateralis using electromyographic, mechanomyographic, and force signals.

RESULTS

The EMD_E-M, EMD_M-F, and EMD_E-F exhibited decreases in duration following 4-weeks of VRT. In addition, EMD_E-M contributed significantly less (42-47%) than EMD_M-F (53-58%) to the total duration of EMD_E-F across the 4-weeks of VRT.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings indicated that a structured, VRT program utilizing multi-joint exercise was sufficient to induce decreases in the electrochemical and mechanical processes associated with step isometric muscle contractions. In addition, the utilization of the electromyographic, mechanomyographic, and force signals were capable of quantifying electrochemical and mechanical component changes associated with voluntary muscle contraction. Thus, EMD_E-M, EMD_M-F, and EMD_E-F can be useful in quantifying physiological changes in athletic, clinical, and applied research interventions.

Intramuscular pressure of human tibialis anterior muscle detects age-related changes in muscle performance

Intramuscular pressure (IMP) reflects forces produced by a muscle. Age is one of the determinants of skeletal muscle performance. The present study aimed to test whether IMP mirrors known age-related muscular changes. We simultaneously measured the tibialis anterior (TA) IMP, compound muscle action potential (CMAP), and ankle torque in thirteen older adults (60-80 years old) in vivo by applying different stimulation intensities and frequencies. We found significant positive correlations between the stimulation intensity and IMP and CMAP. Increasing stimulation frequency caused ankle torque and IMP to increase. The electromechanical delay (EMD) (36 ms) was longer than the onset of IMP (IMPD) (29 ms). Compared to the previously published data collected from young adults (21-40 years old) in identical conditions, the TA CMAP and IMP of older adults at maximum intensity of stimulation were 23.8% and 39.6% lower, respectively. For different stimulation frequencies, CMAP, IMP, as well as ankle torque of older adults were 20.5%, 24.2%, and 13.2% lower, respectively. Surprisingly, the EMD did not exhibit any difference between young and older adults and the IMPD was consistent with the EMD. Data supporting the hypotheses suggest that IMP measurement is an indicator of muscle performance in older adults.

Temporal and spatial relationship between gluteal muscle Surface EMG activity and the vertical component of the ground reaction force during walking

BACKGROUND

Optimized temporal and spatial activation of the gluteal intermuscular functional unit is essential for steady gait and minimized joint loading.

RESEARCH QUESTION

To analyze the temporal relationship between spatially resolved surface EMG (SEMG) of the gluteal region and the corresponding ground reaction force (GRF).

METHODS

Healthy adults (29♀; 25♂; age 62.6±7.0 years) walked at their self-selected slow, normal, and fast walking speeds on a 10 m walkway (ten trials/speed). Bilateral paired eight-electrode strips were horizontally aligned at mid-distance of the vertical line between greater trochanter and iliac crest. Concerning the ventral to dorsal direction, the center of each strip was placed on this vertical line. Initially, these signals were monopolarly sampled, but eight vertically oriented bipolar channels covering the whole gluteal region from ventral to dorsal (P1 to P8) were subsequently calculated by subtracting the signals of the corresponding electrodes of each electrode strip for both sides of the body. Three vertical bipolar channels represented the tensor fasciae latae (TFL; P2), gluteus medius (Gmed, SENIAM position; average of P4 and P5), and gluteus maximus muscles (Gmax; P7). To determine the interval between SEMG and corresponding GRF, the time delay (TD) between the respective first amplitude peaks (F1) in SEMG and vertical GRF curves was calculated.

RESULTS

Throughout the grand averaged SEMG curves, the absolute amplitudes significantly differed among the three walking speeds at all electrode positions, with the amplitude of the F1 peak significantly increasing with increasing speed. In addition, when normalized to slow, the relative SEMG amplitude differences at the individual electrode positions showed an impressively homogeneous pattern. In both vertical GRF and all electrode SEMGs, the F1 peak occurred significantly earlier with increasing speed. Also, the TD between SEMG and vertical GRF F1 peaks significantly decreased with increasing speed. Concerning spatial activation, the TD between the respective F1 peaks in the SEMG and vertical GRF was significantly shorter for the ventral TFL position than the dorsal Gmed and Gmax positions, showing that the SEMG F1 peak during this initial phase of the gait cycle occurred earlier in the dorsal positions, and thus implying that the occurrence of the SEMG F1 peak proceeded from dorsal to ventral.

SIGNIFICANCE

Tightly regulated spatial and temporal activation of the gluteal intermuscular functional unit, which includes both speed- and position-dependent mechanisms, seems to be an essential requirement for a functionally optimized, steady gait.

Acute Effects of a High Volume vs. High Intensity Bench Press Protocol on Electromechanical Delay and Muscle Morphology in Recreationally Trained Women

The purpose of the present investigation was to compare the acute responses on muscle architecture, electromechanical delay (EMD) and performance following a high volume (HV: 5 sets of 10 reps at 70% of 1 repetition maximum (1RM)) and a high intensity (HI: 5 sets of 3 reps at 90% of 1RM) bench press protocol in women. Eleven recreationally trained women (age = 23.3 ± 1.8 y; body weight = 59.7 ± 6.0 kg; height = 164.0 ± 6.3 cm) performed each protocol in a counterbalanced randomized order. Muscle thickness of pectoral (PEC MT) and triceps muscles (TR MT) were collected prior to and 15 min post each trial. In addition, EMD of pectoral (PEC EMD) and triceps (TR EMD) muscles were calculated during isometric bench press maximum force tests performed at the same timepoints (IBPF). Significantly greater increases in PEC MT (p < 0.001) and TR MT (p < 0.001) were detected following HV compared to HI. PEC EMD showed a significantly greater increase following HV compared to HI (p = 0.039). Results of the present study indicate that the HV bench press protocol results in greater acute morphological and neuromuscular changes compared to a HI protocol in women. Evaluations of muscle morphology and electromechanical delay appear more sensitive to fatigue than maximum isometric force assessments.

Longer electromechanical delay in paretic triceps surae muscles during voluntary isometric plantarflexion torque generation in chronic hemispheric stroke survivors

Electromechanical delay (EMD) is the time delay between the onset of muscle activity and the onset of force/joint torque. This delay appears to be linked to muscular contraction efficiency. However, to our knowledge, limited evidence is available regarding the magnitude of the EMD in stroke-impaired muscles. Accordingly, this study aims to quantify the EMD in both paretic and non-paretic triceps surae muscles of chronic hemispheric stroke survivors, and to investigate whether the EMD is related to voluntary force-generating capacity in this muscle group. Nine male chronic stroke survivors were asked to perform isometric plantarflexion contractions at different force levels and at different ankle joint angles ranging from maximum plantarflexion to maximum dorsiflexion. The surface electromyograms were recorded from triceps surae muscles. The longest EMD among triceps surae muscles was chosen as the EMD for each side. Our results revealed that the EMD in paretic muscles was significantly longer than in non-paretic muscles. Moreover, both paretic and non-paretic muscles showed a negative correlation between the EMD and maximum torque-generating capacity. In addition, there was a strong positive relationship between the EMD and shear wave speed in paretic muscles as well as a negative relationship between the EMD and passive ankle joint range of motion. These findings imply that the EMD may be a useful biomarker, in part, associated with contractile and material properties in stroke-impaired muscles.

Flexibility Measurement Affecting the Reduction Pattern of Back Muscle Activation during Trunk Flexion

Numerous studies have been conducted on lower back injury caused by deeper stooped posture, which is associated with the back muscle flexion–relaxation phenomenon (FRP). Individual flexibility also affects FRP; individuals with high flexibility have the benefit of delayed FRP occurrence. This study attempted to determine the most efficient measurement of flexibility for evaluating the occurrence and degree of FRP when participants flexed their trunk forward. We recruited 40 male university students who were grouped on the basis of three flexibility measurements (toe-touch test, TTT; sit-and-reach test, SRT; modified Schober’s test, MST) into three levels (high, middle and low). Muscle activation (thoracic and lumbar erector spinae, TES and LES, respectively; hamstring, HMS) and lumbosacral angle (LSA) were recorded when the trunk flexed forward from 0° (upright) to 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°. The results indicated that trunk angle had a significant effect on three muscle activation levels and LSA. The effects of muscles and LSA varied depending on flexibility measurement. TTT significantly discriminated LES electromyography findings between high and low flexibility groups, whereas MST and SRT distinguished between high and non-high flexibility groups. The TTT values positively correlated with the time of LES FRP occurrence, showing that the higher the TTT, the slower the occurrence of FRP. This is beneficial in delaying or avoiding excessive loading on the passive tissue of the lumbar spine when performing a deeper trunk flexion.

The effects of hypoxia and fatigue on skeletal muscle electromechanical delay

NEW FINDINGS

What is the central question of this study? What are the mechanisms underlying impaired muscular endurance and accelerated fatigue during acute hypoxia? What is the main finding and its importance? Hypoxia had no effect on the electrochemical latency associated with muscle contraction elicited by supramaximal electrical motor nerve stimulation in vivo. This provides greater insight into the effects of hypoxia and fatigue on the mechanisms of muscle contraction in vivo.

ABSTRACT

Acute hypoxia impairs muscle endurance and accelerates fatigue, but the underlying mechanisms, including any effects on muscle electrical activation, are incompletely understood. Electromyographic, mechanomyographic and force signals, elicited by common fibular nerve stimulation, were used to determine electromechanical delay (EMD_TOT ) of the tibialis anterior muscle in normoxia and hypoxia ( F I O 2 0.125) at rest and following fatiguing ankle dorsiflexor exercise (60% maximum voluntary contraction, 5 s on, 3 s off) in 12 healthy participants (mean (SD) age 27.4 (9.0) years). EMD_TOT was determined from electromyographic to force signal onset, electrical activation latency from electromyographic to mechanomyographic (EMD_E-M ) and mechanical latency from mechanomyographic to force (EMD_M-F ). Twitch force fell significantly following fatiguing exercise in normoxia (46.8 (14.7) vs. 20.6 (14.3) N, P = 0.0002) and hypoxia (52.9 (15.4) vs. 28.8 (15.2) N, P = 0.0006). No effect of hypoxia on twitch force at rest was observed. Fatiguing exercise resulted in significant increases in mean (SD) EMD_TOT in normoxia (Δ 4.7 (4.57) ms P = 0.0152) and hypoxia (Δ 3.7 (4.06) ms P = 0.0384) resulting from increased mean (SD) EMD_M-F only (normoxia Δ 4.1 (4.1) ms P = 0.0391, hypoxia Δ 3.4 (3.6) ms P = 0.0303). Mean (SD) EMD_E-M remained unchanged during normoxic (Δ 0.6 (1.08) ms) and hypoxic (Δ 0.25 (0.75) ms) fatiguing exercise. No differences in percentage change from baseline for twitch force, EMD_TOT , EMD_E-M and EMD_M-F between normoxic and hypoxic fatigue conditions were observed. Hypoxia in isolation or in combination with fatigue had no effect on the electrochemical latency associated with electrically evoked muscle contraction.

Fatigue in complete spinal cord injury and implications on total delay

The use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to artificially restore movement in people with complete spinal cord injury (SCI) induces an accelerated process of muscle fatigue. Fatigue increases the time between the beginning of NMES and the onset of muscle force (Delay_TOT ). Understanding how much muscle fatigue affects the Delay_TOT in people with SCI could help in the design of closed-loop neuroprostheses that compensate for this delay, thus making the control system more stable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the extent of fatigue on Delay_TOT and peak force of the lower limbs in people with complete SCI. Fifteen men-young adults with complete SCI (paraplegia and tetraplegia) and stable health-participated in the experiment. Delay_TOT was defined as the time interval between the beginning of NMES application until the onset of muscle force. The electrical intensity of NMES applied was adjusted individually and consisted of the amplitude required to obtain a full extension of the knee (0°), considering the maximum electrically stimulated extension (MESE). Subsequently, 70% of the MESE was applied during the fatigue induction protocol. Significant differences were identified between the moments before and after the fatigue protocol, both for peak force (P ≤ .026) and Delay_TOT (P ≤ .001). The medians and interquartile range of the Delay_TOT were higher in postfatigue (199.0 ms) when compared to the moment before fatigue (146.5 ms). The medians and interquartile range of the peak force were higher in unfatigued lower limbs (0.43 kgf) when compared to the moment postfatigue (0.27 kgf). The results support the hypothesis that muscle fatigue influences the increase in Delay_TOT and decrease in force production in people with SCI. For future applications, the combined evaluation of the delay and force in SCI patients provides valuable feedback for NMES paradigms. The study will provide potentially critical muscle mechanical evidence for the investigation of the evolution of atrophy.

Characterization of Electromechanical Delay Based on a Biophysical Multi-Scale Skeletal Muscle Model

Skeletal muscles can be voluntary controlled by the somatic nervous system yielding an active contractile stress response. Thereby, the active muscle stresses are transmitted to the skeleton by a cascade of connective tissue and thus enable motion. In the context of joint perturbations as well as the assessment of the complexity of neural control, the initial phase of the muscle-tendon system's stress response has a particular importance and is analyzed by means of electromechanical delay (EMD). EMD is defined as the time lag between the stimulation of a muscle and a measurable change in force output. While EMD is believed to depend on multiple structures / phenomena, it is hard to separate their contributions experimentally. We employ a physiologically detailed, three-dimensional, multi-scale model of an idealized muscle-tendon system to analyze the influence of (i) muscle and tendon length, (ii) the material behavior of skeletal muscle and tendon tissue, (iii) the chemo-electro-mechanical behavior of the muscle fibers and (iv) neural control on EMD. Comparisons with experimental data show that simulated EMD values are within the physiological range, i.e., between 6.1 and 68.6 ms, and that the model is able to reproduce the characteristic EMD-stretch curve, yielding the minimum EMD at optimal length. Simulating consecutive recruitment of motor units increases EMD by more than 20 ms, indicating that during voluntary contractions neural control is the dominant factor determining EMD. In contrast, the muscle fiber action potential conduction velocity is found to influence EMD even of a 27 cm long muscle by not more than 3.7 ms. We further demonstrate that in conditions where only little pre-stretch is applied to a muscle-tendon system, the mechanical behavior of both muscle and tendon tissue considerably impacts EMD. Predicting EMD for different muscle and tendon lengths indicates that the anatomy of a specific muscle-tendon system is optimized for its function, i.e., shorter tendon lengths are beneficial to minimize the neural control effort for muscles primary acting as motor in concentric contractions.

Development of an EMG-Controlled Knee Exoskeleton to Assist Home Rehabilitation in a Game Context

As a leading cause of loss of functional movement, stroke often makes it difficult for patients to walk. Interventions to aid motor recovery in stroke patients should be carried out as a matter of urgency. However, muscle activity in the knee is usually too weak to generate overt movements, which poses a challenge for early post-stroke rehabilitation training. Although electromyography (EMG)-controlled exoskeletons have the potential to solve this problem, most existing robotic devices in rehabilitation centers are expensive, technologically complex, and allow only low training intensity. To address these problems, we have developed an EMG-controlled knee exoskeleton for use at home to assist stroke patients in their rehabilitation. EMG signals of the subject are acquired by an easy-to-don EMG sensor and then processed by a Kalman filter to control the exoskeleton autonomously. A newly-designed game is introduced to improve rehabilitation by encouraging patients' involvement in the training process. Six healthy subjects took part in an initial test of this new training tool. The test showed that subjects could use their EMG signals to control the exoskeleton to assist them in playing the game. Subjects found the rehabilitation process interesting, and they improved their control performance through 20-block training, with game scores increasing from 41.3 ± 15.19 to 78.5 ± 25.2. The setup process was simplified compared to traditional studies and took only 72 s according to test on one healthy subject. The time lag of EMG signal processing, which is an important aspect for real-time control, was significantly reduced to about 64 ms by employing a Kalman filter, while the delay caused by the exoskeleton was about 110 ms. This easy-to-use rehabilitation tool has a greatly simplified training process and allows patients to undergo rehabilitation in a home environment without the need for a therapist to be present. It has the potential to improve the intensity of rehabilitation and the outcomes for stroke patients in the initial phase of rehabilitation.

Evaluating skeletal muscle electromechanical delay with intramuscular pressure

INTRODUCTION

Intramuscular pressure (IMP) is the fluid pressure generated within skeletal muscle and directly reflects individual muscle tension. The purpose of this study was to assess the development of force, IMP, and electromyography (EMG) in the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle during ramped isometric contractions and evaluate electromechanical delay (EMD).

METHODS

Force, EMG, and IMP were simultaneously measured during ramped isometric contractions in eight young, healthy human subjects. The EMD between the onset of force and EMG activity (Δt-EMG force) and the onset of IMP and EMG activity (Δt EMG-IMP) were calculated.

RESULTS

A statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was found between the mean force-EMG EMD (36 ± 31 ms) and the mean IMP-EMG EMD (3 ± 21 ms).

CONCLUSIONS

IMP reflects changes in muscle tension due to the contractile muscle elements.

A systematic review of approaches to modelling lower limb muscle forces during gait: Applicability to clinical gait analyses

Computational methods to estimate muscle forces during walking are becoming more common in biomechanical research but not yet in clinical gait analysis. This systematic review aims to identify the current state-of-the-art, examine the differences between approaches, and consider applicability of the current approaches in clinical gait analysis. A systematic database search identified studies including estimated muscle force profiles of the lower limb during healthy walking. These were rated for quality and the muscle force profiles digitised for comparison. From 13.449 identified studies, 22 were finally included which used four modelling approaches: static optimisation, enhanced static optimisation, forward dynamics and EMG-driven. These used a range of different musculoskeletal models, muscle-tendon characteristics and cost functions. There is visually broad agreement between and within approaches about when muscles are active throughout the gait cycle. There remain, considerable differences (CV 7%-151%, range of timing of peak forces in gait cycle 1%-31%) in patterns and magnitudes of force between and within modelling approaches. The main source of this variability is not clear. Different musculoskeletal models, experimental protocols, and modelling approaches will clearly have an effect as will the variability of joint kinetics between healthy individuals. Limited validation of modelling approaches, particularly at the level of individual participants, makes it difficult to conclude if any of the approaches give consistently better estimates than others. While muscle force modelling has clear potential to enhance clinical gait analyses future research is needed to improve validation, accuracy and feasibility of implementation in clinical practice.

Electromechanical delay in the tibialis anterior muscle during time-varying ankle dorsiflexion

We evaluated the electromechanical delay (EMD) for the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle during the performance of time-varying ankle dorsiflexions. Subjects were asked to track a sinusoidal trajectory, for a range of amplitudes and frequencies. Motor unit (MU) action potential trains were identified from surface electromyography (EMG) decomposition and summed to generate the cumulative spike train (CST). CST and the exerted force were cross-correlated to identify the delay between the CST and force, which was considered as an estimate of the EMD. The results showed that the EMD decreased logarithmically with the increase in the slope of the force produced.

Comparing electro- and mechano-myographic muscle activation patterns in self-paced pediatric gait

Electromyography (EMG) is the standard modality for measuring muscle activity. However, the convenience and availability of low-cost accelerometer-based wearables makes mechanomyography (MMG) an increasingly attractive alternative modality for clinical applications. Literature to date has demonstrated a strong association between EMG and MMG temporal alignment in isometric and isokinetic contractions. However, the EMG-MMG relationship has not been studied in gait. In this study, the concurrence of EMG- and MMG-detected contractions in the tibialis anterior, lateral gastrocnemius, vastus lateralis, and biceps femoris muscles were investigated in children during self-paced gait. Furthermore, the distribution of signal power over the gait cycle was statistically compared between EMG-MMG modalities. With EMG as the reference, muscular contractions were detected based on MMG with balanced accuracies between 88 and 94% for all muscles except the gastrocnemius. MMG signal power differed from that of EMG during certain phases of the gait cycle in all muscles except the biceps femoris. These timing and power distribution differences between the two modalities may in part be related to muscle fascicle length changes that are unique to muscle motion during gait. Our findings suggest that the relationship between EMG and MMG appears to be more complex during gait than in isometric and isokinetic contractions.

Electromechanical response times in the knee muscles in young and old women

INTRODUCTION

The aim of the study was to compare electromechanical response times [total reaction time (TRT), pre-motor time (PMT), and electromechanical delay] in the knee muscles in groups of young and older women during release of peak torque (PT).

METHODS

Fifty women (1 group approximately 20 years of age and the other approximately 60 years of age) participated in the study. PT and electromyographic activity were measured for flexors and extensors of the right and left knee in static conditions in response to a visual stimulus.

RESULTS

Significantly longer TRTs (P = 0.05) and PMTs (P = 0.05) were found in the group of older women compared with the younger participants. Asymmetry was found between the older and the younger group of women in PT of knee flexors.

DISCUSSION

Significantly longer TRT and PMT phases in the group of older women suggests a longer time for information processing in the central nervous system in older people. Muscle Nerve 56: E147-E153, 2017.

Spatial variation and inconsistency between estimates of onset of muscle activation from EMG and ultrasound

Delayed onset of muscle activation can be a descriptor of impaired motor control. Activation onset can be estimated from electromyography (EMG)-registered muscle excitation and from ultrasound-registered muscle motion, which enables non-invasive measurements in deep muscles. However, in voluntary activation, EMG- and ultrasound-detected activation onsets may not correspond. To evaluate this, ten healthy men performed isometric elbow flexion at 20% to 70% of their maximal force. Utilising a multi-channel electrode transparent to ultrasound, EMG and M(otion)-mode ultrasound were recorded simultaneously over the biceps brachii muscle. The time intervals between automated and visually estimated activation onsets were correlated with the regional variation of EMG and muscle motion onset, contraction level and speed. Automated and visual onsets indicated variable time intervals between EMG- and motion onset, median (interquartile range) 96 (121) ms and 48 (72) ms, respectively. In 17% (computed analysis) or 23% (visual analysis) of trials, motion onset was detected before local EMG onset. Multi-channel EMG and M-mode ultrasound revealed regional differences in activation onset, which decreased with higher contraction speed (Spearman ρ ≥ 0.45, P < 0.001). In voluntary activation the heterogeneous motor unit recruitment together with immediate motion transmission may explain the high variation of the time intervals between local EMG- and ultrasound-detected activation onset.

Changes in the electromechanical delay components during a fatiguing stimulation in human skeletal muscle: an EMG, MMG and force combined approach

PURPOSE

Peripheral fatigue involves electrochemical and mechanical mechanisms. An electromyographic, mechanomyographic and force combined approach may permit a kinetic evaluation of the changes at the synaptic, skeletal muscle fiber, and muscle-tendon unit level during a fatiguing stimulation.

METHODS

Surface electromyogram, mechanomyogram, force and stimulation current were detected from the gastrocnemius medialis muscle in twenty male participants during a fatiguing stimulation (twelve blocks of 35 Hz stimulations, duty cycle 9 s on/1 s off, duration 120 s). The total electromechanical delay and its three components (between stimulation current and electromyogram, synaptic component; between electromyogram and mechanomyogram signal onset, muscle fiber electrochemical component, and between mechanomyogram and force signal onset, mechanical component) were calculated. Interday reliability and sensitivity were determined.

RESULTS

After fatigue, peak force decreased by 48% (P < 0.05) and the total electromechanical delay and its synaptic, electrochemical and mechanical components lengthened from 25.8 ± 0.9, 1.47 ± 0.04, 11.2 ± 0.6, and 13.1 ± 1.3 ms to 29.0 ± 1.6, 1.56 ± 0.05, 12.4 ± 0.9, and 17.2 ± 0.6 ms, respectively (P < 0.05). During fatigue, the total electromechanical delay and the mechanical component increased significantly after the 40th second, and then remained stable. The synaptic and electrochemical components lengthened significantly after the 20th and 30th second, respectively. Interday reliability was high to very high, with an adequate level of sensitivity.

CONCLUSIONS

The kinetic evaluation of the delays during the fatiguing stimulation highlighted different onsets and kinetics, with the events at synaptic level being the first to reveal a significant elongation, followed by those at the intra-fiber level. The mechanical events, which were the most affected by fatigue, were the last to lengthen.

The Time-Varying Nature of Electromechanical Delay and Muscle Control Effectiveness in Response to Stimulation-Induced Fatigue

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) are commonly prescribed rehabilitative therapies. Closed-loop NMES holds the promise to yield more accurate limb control, which could enable new rehabilitative procedures. However, NMES/FES can rapidly fatigue muscle, which limits potential treatments and presents several control challenges. Specifically, the stimulation intensity-force relation changes as the muscle fatigues. Additionally, the delayed response between the application of stimulation and muscle force production, termed electromechanical delay (EMD), may increase with fatigue. This paper quantifies these effects. Specifically, open-loop fatiguing protocols were applied to the quadriceps femoris muscle group of able-bodied individuals under isometric conditions, and the resulting torque was recorded. Short pulse trains were used to measure EMD with a thresholding method while long duration pulse trains were used to induce fatigue, measure EMD with a cross-correlation method, and construct recruitment curves. EMD was found to increase significantly with fatigue, and the control effectiveness (i.e., the linear slope of the recruitment curve) decreased with fatigue. Outcomes of these experiments indicate an opportunity for improved closed-loop NMES/FES control development by considering EMD to be time-varying and by considering the muscle recruitment curve to be a nonlinear, time-varying function of the stimulation input.

Electromechanical delay of the hamstrings during eccentric muscle actions in males and females: Implications for non-contact ACL injuries

Sex differences in neuromuscular functioning has been proposed as one of the factors behind an increased relative risk of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in females. The aim of this study was to explore sex differences in electromechanical delay (EMD) of the hamstring muscles during eccentric muscle actions and during a range of movement velocities. This study recruited 110 participants (55 males, 55 females) and electromyography of the semitendinosus, semimembranosus and biceps femoris was determined during eccentric actions at 60, 120 and 240°/s. No significant sex differences were observed irrespective of muscle examined or movement velocity. Irrespective of sex EMD significantly increased with increasing movement velocity (P < 0.01). There was no significant difference in the EMD of the 3 muscles examined. Our findings suggest that during eccentric actions of the hamstrings that there are no sex differences, irrespective of movement velocity. This would suggest that other factors are probably responsible for the increased relative risk of non-contact ACL injury in females compared to males.

Detection of the electromechanical delay and its components during voluntary isometric contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle

Electromechanical delay (EMD) was described as a time elapsed between first trigger and force output. Various results have been reported based on the measurement method with observed inconsistent results when the trigger is elicited by voluntary contraction. However, mechanomyographic (MMG) sensor placed far away on the skin from the contracting muscle was used to detect muscle fiber motion and excitation-contraction (EC) coupling which may give unreliable results. On this basis, the purpose of this study was to detect EMD during active muscle contraction whilst introducing an ultrafast ultrasound (US) method to detect muscle fiber motion from a certain depth of the muscle. Time delays between onsets of EMG-MMG, EMG-US, MMG-FORCE, US-FORCE, and EMG-FORCE were calculated as 20.5 ± 4.73, 28.63 ± 6.31, 19.21 ± 6.79, 30.52 ± 8.85, and 49.73 ± 6.99 ms, respectively. Intrarater correlation coefficient (ICC) was higher than MMG when ultrafast US was used for detecton of the Δt EMG-US and Δt US-FORCE, ICC values of 0.75 and 0.70, respectively. Synchronization of the ultrafast ultrasound with EMG and FORCE sensors can reveal reliable and clinically useful results related to the EMD and its components when muscle is voluntarily contracted. With ultrafast US, we detect onset from the certain depth of the muscle excluding the tissues above the muscle acting as a low-pass filter which can lead to inaccurate time detection about the onset of the contracting muscle fibers. With this non-invasive technique, understanding of the muscle dynamics can be facilitated.

Electromechanical delay of the knee extensor muscles: comparison among young, middle-age and older individuals

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the ageing process in the electromechanical delay (EMD), rate of torque development (RTD) and peak torque (PT) of the knee extensor muscles. The volunteers were assigned to three groups: young group (YG - 23·44 ± 4·74 years, 78·14 ± 15·11 kg, 1·72 ± 0·05 m), middle-aged group (MAG - 49·56 ± 6·06 years, 72·01 ± 14·07 kg, 1·67 ± 0·06 m) and elderly group (EG - 68·67 ± 9·06 years, 67·96 ± 7·60 kg, 1·64 ± 0·07 m). The PT and RTD were assessed during maximal voluntary ballistic isometric contractions (MVBIC) in the isokinetic dynamometer. Muscle electrical activity was recorded (EMG) during MVBIC in the vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM) and rectus femoris (RF) muscles. The EMD was calculated during the MVBIC, through the time interval between the EMG onset and torque onset. The PT and RTD were higher in the YG than in the MAG (P = 0·02; P = 0·01, respectively) and in the EG (P = 0·002; P = 0·0004, respectively). There were no significant differences in EMD among the three age groups for the VL, VM and RF (P>0·05) muscles. We conclude that age affects the PT and RTD, but not EMD of the VL, VM and RF muscles.

The effects of a doublet stimulus and force level on the electromechanical delay

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a doublet stimulus evoked during isometric submaximal contractions on the electromechanical delay (EMD). Twenty-three healthy individuals performed isometric step contractions ranging from 10 to 70% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) with a doublet stimulus applied during the contractions. A 2-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (gender [male vs. female] × contraction intensity [10% vs. 20% vs. 30% vs. 40% vs. 50% vs. 60% vs. 70% MVC]) was used to analyze the EMD. The EMD at 10% was significantly less than at 30% (p = 0.022), 40% (p = 0.044), 50% (p = 0.012), 60% (p = 0.041), and 70% MVC (p < 0.001). In addition, the EMD at 70% MVC was significantly higher than at 20% (p = 0.002), 30% (p = 0.006), 40% (p = 0.009), and 50% MVC (p = 0.021). The EMD is the time difference between muscle activation and the onset of muscle force production, with the stretching of the series elastic component (SEC) as the major contributor. A doublet stimulus applied during an isometric contraction minimizes the effects of the SEC during the interpolated twitch technique. Therefore, when the SEC is minimized, the EMD may be lengthened because of mechanisms associated with the excitation-contraction coupling at higher contraction intensities. The EMD measurement, produced with a doublet stimulus, could potentially be a useful tool to examine the effects of fatigue, exercise, stretching, and so on, on the excitation-contraction coupling during various force levels. However, future research is needed to further elucidate the mechanisms that result in a lengthening of the EMD under these conditions.

Effects of fatigue on the electromechanical delay components in gastrocnemius medialis muscle

PURPOSE

Under electrically evoked contractions, the time interval between the onset of the stimulation pulse (Stim) and the beginning of force (F) development can be partitioned (Delay(TOT)), by an electromyographic (EMG), mechanomyographic (MMG) and F combined approach, into three components each containing different parts of the electrochemical and mechanical processes underlying neuromuscular activation and contraction. The aim of the study was to evaluate inter- and intra-operator reliability of the measurements and to assess the effects of fatigue on the different Delay(TOT) components.

METHODS

Sixteen participants underwent two sets of tetanic stimulations of the gastrocnemius medialis muscle, with 10 min of rest in between. After a fatiguing protocol of 120 s, tetanic stimulations were replicated. The same protocol was repeated on a different day. Stim, EMG, MMG and F signals were recorded during contraction. Delay(TOT) and its three components (between Stim and EMG, Δt Stim-EMG; between EMG and MMG, Δt EMG-MMG and between MMG and F, Δt MMG-F) were calculated.

RESULTS

Before fatigue, Delay(TOT), Δt Stim-EMG, Δt EMG-MMG and Δt MMG-F lasted 27.5 ± 0.9, 1.4 ± 0.1, 9.2 ± 0.5 and 16.8 ± 0.7 ms, respectively. Fatigue lengthened Delay(TOT), Δt Stim-EMG, Δt EMG-MMG and Δt MMG-F by 18, 7, 16 and 22 %, respectively. Δt Stim-EMG, Δt EMG-MMG and Δt MMG-F contributed to Delay(TOT) lengthening by 2, 27 and 71 %, respectively. Reliability was always from high to very high.

CONCLUSIONS

The combined approach allowed a reliable calculation of the three contributors to Delay(TOT). The effects of fatigue on each Delay(TOT) component could be precisely assessed.

Age-gender differences in the reaction times of ankle muscles

AIM

Reaction times of the hip abductor were reported to be longer in elderly women than in elderly men, and this was suggested to be related to mediolateral balance performance. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of age and gender on the reaction performance of ankle muscles, which have predominant roles in anterioposterior balance control.

METHODS

A total of 40 elderly subjects and 40 young subjects (even number of men and women) carried out a series of isometric plantarflexions and dorsiflexions, as forcefully and quickly as possible, in response to auditory stimulus. Surface electromyogram at the dorsiflexor and plantarflexor were recorded, together with foot plantar force. Premotor time, motor time and total reaction time derived from the experimental data were compared between age groups and genders by two-way anova.

RESULTS

Both dorsiflexor and plantarflexor showed similar reaction performance. Premotor time increased with age with no gender difference. Motor time increased with age in women and not in men, resulting in longer motor time in elderly women than in elderly men. Total reaction time was dominated by premotor time, so that it was longer in the elderly with no gender difference.

CONCLUSION

Although age-related elongation of motor time was greater in women, total reaction time was not different between the genders. This may be related to no gender difference in anterioposterior balance performance.

Reliability of the Electromechanical Delay Components Assessment during the Relaxation Phase

The study aimed to assess by an electromyographic (EMG), mechanomyographic (MMG), and force-combined approach the electrochemical and mechanical components of the overall electromechanical delay during relaxation (R-EMD). Reliability of the measurements was also assessed. To this purpose, supramaximal tetanic stimulations (50 Hz) were delivered to the gastrocnemius medialis muscle of 17 participants. During stimulations, the EMG, MMG, and force signals were detected, and the time lag between EMG cessation and the beginning of force decay (Δt EMG-F, as temporal indicators of the electrochemical events) and from the initial force decrease to the largest negative peak of MMG signal during relaxation (Δt F-MMG, as temporal indicators of the mechanical events) was calculated, together with overall R-EMD duration (from EMG cessation to the largest MMG negative peak during relaxation). Peak force (pF), half relaxation time (HRT), and MMG peak-to-peak during the relaxation phase (R-MMG p-p) were also calculated. Test-retest reliability was assessed by Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). With a total R-EMD duration of 96.9 ± 1.9 ms, Δt EMG-F contributed for about 24% (23.4 ± 2.7 ms) while Δt F-MMG for about 76% (73.5 ± 3.2 ms). Reliability of the measurements was high for all variables. Our findings show that the main contributor to R-EMD is represented by the mechanical components (series elastic components and muscle fibres behaviour), with a high reliability level for this type of approach.

Effects of temperature and fatigue on the electromechanical delay components

INTRODUCTION

Neuromuscular activation can be influenced by both muscle temperature (Tm) and fatigue.

METHODS

To assess the effects of Tm and fatigue on the electromechanical delay (EMD), 15 participants performed voluntary isometric contractions of different intensities under neutral (TmN), low (TmL), and high (TmH) Tm, before and after a fatiguing exercise. During contraction, electromyogram (EMG), mechanomyogram (MMG), and force (F) were recorded from the biceps brachii muscle. The EMD and the latencies between EMG and MMG (Δt EMG-MMG, which includes the electrochemical processes of EMD) and between MMG and F (Δt MMG-F, which includes the mechanical processes of EMD) were calculated.

RESULTS

TmL increased only Δt EMG-MMG, both before and after fatigue. Fatigue lengthened EMD, Δt EMG-MMG, and Δt MMG-F under all Tm to a similar extent.

CONCLUSIONS

While fatigue increased all EMD components, muscle cooling affected only the electrochemical but not the mechanical processes of EMD.

Sex differences in electromechanical delay during a punch movement

This study assessed how sex of participant is related to electromechanical delay during a karate punch. Ten male (M age = 25.00 yr., SD = 3.02; M height=174.9 cm, SD=6.3; M weight = 71.13 kg, SD=9.35) and 8 female (M age = 27.4 yr., SD = 6.0; M height = 161.4 cm, SD = 5.1; M weight = 59.09 kg, SD = 7.00) karate athletes performed 10 ballistic punches to a target as hard as possible. Kinematic analysis and surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of the upper-limb muscles were recorded. Men had a significantly shorter electromechanical delay in the anterior portion of the deltoid, showing a larger effectiveness in the transfer of the contractile force for the beginning of movement. Agonist and antagonist relationships show intermuscular coordination differences between the sexes. Results revealed the existence of a different neuromuscular coordination pattern of motor control between men and women, although a similar kinematic pattern was expected due to karate practice.

Electromechanical delay of the vastus medialis obliquus and vastus lateralis in individuals with patellofemoral pain syndrome

STUDY DESIGN

Case-control study.

OBJECTIVE

To examine electromechanical delay (EMD) of the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) and the vastus lateralis (VL) in individuals with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS).

BACKGROUND

EMD is a mechanical property of muscles related to protective reflex and sports performance. The time duration of the EMD can be shortened with strength training and, conversely, can be lengthened secondary to immobilization. However, it is unclear if EMD between various components of the quadriceps is affected in individuals with PFPS.

METHODS

Twenty-six individuals with PFPS and 26 healthy volunteers were studied. The VMO and VL were electrically stimulated to evoke muscle twitches. Ultrasound was used to assess patellar movement elicited by the muscle twitch. The time from the onset of electrical stimulation to the onset of patellar movement was measured as the EMD. The EMDs of the VMO and VL were compared between groups using a mixed-model analysis of variance.

RESULTS

Subsequent to a significant interaction (P<.001), post hoc analysis indicated that the EMD of the VMO was longer (PFPS, 37.3 ± 0.7 milliseconds; control, 25.9 ± 0.7 milliseconds; P<.001) and the EMD of the VL was shorter (PFPS, 18.4 ± 0.5 milliseconds; control, 25.1 ± 0.5 milliseconds; P<.001) in the PFPS group. Therefore, in the individuals with PFPS, the EMD of the VMO was significantly longer than that of the VL (P<.001), which was not the case for those in the control group (P = .20).

CONCLUSION
