Abstract
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world due to its unique aroma and psychostimulant effects, mainly due to the presence of caffeine. In recent years, experimental evidence has shown that the moderate consumption of coffee (3/4 cups per day) is safe and beneficial to human health, revealing protective effects against numerous chronic metabolic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and hepatic diseases. This review focuses on two of coffee's main bioactive compounds, i.e., caffeine and chlorogenic acids, and their effects on the progression of chronic liver diseases, demonstrating that regular coffee consumption correlates with a lower risk of the development and progression of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, viral hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. In particular, this review analyzes caffeine and chlorogenic acid from a pharmacological point of view and explores the molecular mechanism through which these compounds are responsible for the protective role of coffee. Both bioactive compounds, therefore, have antifibrotic effects on hepatic stellate cells and hepatocytes, induce a decrease in connective tissue growth factor, stimulate increased apoptosis with anti-cancer effects, and promote a major inhibition of focal adhesion kinase, actin, and protocollagen synthesis. In conclusion, coffee shows many beneficial effects, and experimental data in favor of coffee consumption in patients with liver diseases are encouraging, but further prospective studies are needed to demonstrate its preventive and therapeutic role in chronic liver diseases.

Abstract
Background: In chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seroclearance is the main target of therapy and is rarely observed. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting HBsAg loss by focusing especially on the relationship between weight loss and HBsAg loss. Methods: This study was designed retrospectively to assess HBsAg status and clinical and laboratory findings in CHB patients, as well as cross-sectionally to evaluate lifestyle factors. A total of 5600 hepatitis B (HB) infection patients who were treated or followed between 2008 and 2020 were evaluated retrospectively. In the HBsAg loss group, 94 CHB patients were examined based on exclusion criteria, and 95 patients without HBsAg loss were matched as controls. Patient data and laboratory findings were retrieved from patient files. All participants were surveyed using a questionnaire developed by the authors, which inquired about the lifestyle characteristics of CHB patients. The questionnaire covered topics such as the use of herbal products, coffee consumption, medication history, antiviral treatment, concurrent diseases, weight changes, and patient demographics. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25.0. The Student's t-test was used to compare quantitative variables, while the chi-square test was used for categorical variables. A paired samples t-test was used to compare dependent samples. The statistical significance level was set at a p value less than 0.05. Results: The basal mean hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA level was significantly lower in the HBsAg loss group (P < 0.001). The prevalence of hyperlipidemia comorbidity (P = 0.008) and moderate/severe hepatosteatosis (P < 0.05) was significantly higher in the HBsAg loss group compared to the non-HBsAg loss group. Prior to HBsAg loss, 44 (47%) patients in the HBsAg loss group experienced weight loss, whereas only 22 (23%) patients in the non-HBsAg group had a history of weight loss (P < 0.001). Conversely, the incidence of weight gain was significantly lower in the HBsAg loss group (P = 0.001). A paired samples t-test was conducted to compare the baseline and last period body mass index (BMI) means of the HBsAg loss group, revealing a statistically significant decrease in mean BMI in the last period (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Weight loss was significantly associated with HBsAg seroclearance in patients with CHB infection. Conversely, weight gain was associated with HBsAg persistence.

Abstract
Mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the key mechanisms for developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). Hyperoxaluria and nephrolithiasis are also associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. Increasing evidence has shown that caffeine, the main bioactive compound in coffee, exerts both anti-fibrotic and anti-lithogenic properties but with unclear mechanisms. Herein, we address the protective effect of caffeine against mitochondrial dysfunction during oxalate-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in renal cells. Analyses revealed that oxalate successfully induced EMT in MDCK renal cells as evidenced by the increased expression of several EMT-related genes (i.e., Snai1, Fn1 and Acta2). Oxalate also suppressed cellular metabolic activity and intracellular ATP level, but increased reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, oxalate reduced abundance of active mitochondria and induced mitochondrial fragmentation (fission). Furthermore, oxalate decreased mitochondrial biogenesis and content as evidenced by decreased expression of sirtuin-1 (SIRT1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), cytochrome c oxidase subunit 4 (COX4), and total mitochondrial proteins. Nonetheless, these oxalate-induced deteriorations in MDCK cells and their mitochondria were successfully hampered by caffeine. Knockdown of Snai1 gene by small interfering RNA (siRNA) completely abolished the effects of oxalate on suppression of cellular metabolic activity, intracellular ATP and abundance of active mitochondria, indicating that these oxalate-induced renal cell deteriorations were mediated through the Snai1 EMT-related gene. These data, at least in part, unveil the anti-fibrotic mechanism of caffeine during oxalate-induced EMT in renal cells by preserving mitochondrial biogenesis and function.

Abstract
Pulmonary fibrosis is a debilitating and life-limiting lung condition in which the damage- response mechanisms of mixed-population cells within the lungs go awry. The tissue microenvironment is drastically remodelled by aberrantly activated fibroblasts which deposit ECM components into the surrounding lung tissue, detrimentally affecting lung function and capacity for gas exchange. Growing evidence suggests a role for adenosine signalling in the pathology of tissue fibrosis in a variety of organs, including the lung, but the molecular pathways through which this occurs remain largely unknown. This review explores the role of adenosine in fibrosis and evaluates the contribution of the different adenosine receptors to fibrogenesis. Therapeutic targeting of the adenosine receptors is also considered, along with clinical observations pointing towards a role for adenosine in fibrosis. In addition, the interaction between adenosine signalling and other profibrotic signalling pathways, such as TGFβ1 signalling, is discussed.

Abstract
Emerging processing methods have been applied in coffee bean processing for improved sensory quality. The processes focus on optimizing the fermentation process of the coffee cherries and beans. This involves various pathways, including the formation of volatiles, flavor precursors and organic acids and the reduction in the concentrations of bioactive compounds. Comprehensive information regarding the effect of these emerging processes on the chemical, biological and sensory properties of the coffee beans is summarized. Emerging processes affected the coffee bean to various degrees depending on the raw material and the method used. The emerging methods promoted the reduction of bioactives such as caffeine and phenolics in coffee beans. Substantial improvement of these processes is needed to obtain coffee beans with improved biological activities. Effort to simplify the methods and optimize the post-fermentation process is crucial for the methods to be easily accessible by the producers and to produce defect-free coffee beans.

Abstract
We examined the association between caffeine and coffee intake and the community composition and structure of colonic microbiota. A total of 34 polyp-free adults donated 97 colonic biopsies. Microbial DNA was sequenced for the 16S rRNA gene V4 region. The amplicon sequence variant was assigned using DADA2 and SILVA. Food consumption was ascertained using a food frequency questionnaire. We compared the relative abundance of taxonomies by low (<82.9 mg) vs. high (≥82.9 mg) caffeine intake and by never or <2 cups vs. 2 cups vs. ≥3 cups coffee intake. False discovery rate-adjusted p values (q values) <0.05 indicated statistical significance. Multivariable negative binomial regression models were used to estimate the incidence rate ratio and its 95% confidence interval of having a non-zero count of certain bacteria by intake level. Higher caffeine and coffee intake was related to higher alpha diversity (Shannon index p < 0.001), higher relative abundance of Faecalibacterium and Alistipes, and lower relative abundance of Erysipelatoclostridium (q values < 0.05). After adjustment of vitamin B2 in multivariate analysis, the significant inverse association between Erysipelatoclostridium count and caffeine intake remained statistically significant. Our preliminary study could not evaluate other prebiotics in coffee.

Abstract
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages, which has several effects on the human body. In particular, current evidence suggests that coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of inflammation, various types of cancers, and certain neurodegenerative diseases. Among the various constituents of coffee, phenolic phytochemicals, more specifically chlorogenic acids, are the most abundant, and there have been many attempts to utilize coffee chlorogenic acid for cancer prevention and therapy. Due to its beneficial biological effect on the human body, coffee is regarded as a functional food. In this review article, we summarize the recent advances and knowledge on the association of phytochemicals contained in coffee as nutraceuticals, with a particular focus on phenolic compounds, their intake, and nutritional biomarkers, with the reduction of disease risk, including inflammation, cancer, and neurological diseases.

Abstract
This cross-sectional study examines the association between coffee and caffeine consumption and depressive symptoms in postpartum women. In total, 821 postpartum women who met the study's inclusion criteria were interviewed. Data were extracted from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Coffee consumption and 11 confounding variables were considered and analyzed as baseline data. Weighted logistic regression models were constructed by adjusting the variables, and the odds ratios of total coffee, caffeinated coffee, and decaffeinated coffee were assessed for their impact on depression status. In addition, subgroup analyses were conducted according to race, breastfeeding status, and postpartum period. The results show that generic coffee and caffeinated coffee intake have a potentially protective effect in postpartum women. Drinking more than three cups of caffeinated coffee may lower the risk of postpartum depression, particularly in the 1-2 year postpartum period and in non-breastfeeding women. The association between decaffeinated coffee consumption and postpartum depression remains unclear.
