MultiChannelSleepNet: A Transformer-Based Model for Automatic Sleep Stage Classification With PSG

Automatic sleep stage classification plays an essential role in sleep quality measurement and sleep disorder diagnosis. Although many approaches have been developed, most use only single-channel electroencephalogram signals for classification. Polysomnography (PSG) provides multiple channels of signal recording, enabling the use of the appropriate method to extract and integrate the information from different channels to achieve higher sleep staging performance. We present a transformer encoder-based model, MultiChannelSleepNet, for automatic sleep stage classification with multichannel PSG data, whose architecture is implemented based on the transformer encoder for single-channel feature extraction and multichannel feature fusion. In a single-channel feature extraction block, transformer encoders extract features from time-frequency images of each channel independently. Based on our integration strategy, the feature maps extracted from each channel are fused in the multichannel feature fusion block. Another set of transformer encoders further capture joint features, and a residual connection preserves the original information from each channel in this block. Experimental results on three publicly available datasets demonstrate that our method achieves higher classification performance than state-of-the-art techniques. MultiChannelSleepNet is an efficient method to extract and integrate the information from multichannel PSG data, which facilitates precision sleep staging in clinical applications.

Percept-related EEG classification using machine learning approach and features of functional brain connectivity

Machine learning is a promising approach for electroencephalographic (EEG) trials classification. Its efficiency is largely determined by the feature extraction and selection techniques reducing the dimensionality of input data. Dimensionality reduction is usually implemented via the mathematical approaches (e.g., principal component analysis, linear discriminant analysis, etc.) regardless of the origin of analyzed data. We hypothesize that since EEG features are determined by certain neurophysiological processes, they should have distinctive characteristics in spatiotemporal domain. If so, it is possible to specify the set of EEG principal features based on the prior knowledge about underlying neurophysiological processes. To test this hypothesis, we consider the classification of EEG trials related to the perception of ambiguous visual stimuli. We observe that EEG features, underlying the different ambiguous stimuli interpretations, are defined by the network properties of neuronal activity. Having analyzed functional neural interactions, we specify the brain area in which neural network architecture exhibits differences for different classes of EEG trials. We optimize the feedforward multilayer perceptron and develop a strategy for the training set selection to maximize the classification accuracy, being 85% when all channels are used. The revealed localization of the percept-related features allows about 95% accuracy, when the number of channels is reduced up to 90%. Obtained results can be used for classification of EEG trials associated with more complex cognitive tasks. Taking into account that cognitive activity is subserved by a distributed functional cortical network, its topological properties have to be considered when selecting optimal features for EEG trial classification.

A comparative review on sleep stage classification methods in patients and healthy individuals

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Proper scoring of sleep stages can give clinical information on diagnosing patients with sleep disorders. Since traditional visual scoring of the entire sleep is highly time-consuming and dependent to experts' experience, automatic schemes based on electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis are broadly developed to solve these problems. This review presents an overview on the most suitable methods in terms of preprocessing, feature extraction, feature selection and classifier adopted to precisely discriminate the sleep stages.

METHODS

This study round up a wide range of research findings concerning the application of the sleep stage classification. The fundamental qualitative methods along with the state-of-the-art quantitative techniques for sleep stage scoring are comprehensively introduced. Moreover, according to the results of the investigated studies, five research papers are chosen and practically implemented on a well-known public available sleep EEG dataset. They are applied to single-channel EEG of 40 subjects containing equal number of healthy and patient individuals. Feature extraction and classification schemes are assessed in terms of accuracy and robustness against noise. Furthermore, an additional implementation phase is added to this research in which all combinations of the implemented features and classifiers are considered to find the best combination for sleep analysis.

RESULTS

According to our achieved results on both groups, entropy of wavelet coefficients along with random forest classifier are chosen as the best feature and classifier, respectively. The mentioned feature and classifier provide 87.06% accuracy on healthy subjects and 69.05% on patient group.

CONCLUSIONS

In this paper, the road map of EEG-base sleep stage scoring methods is clearly sketched. Implementing the state-of-the-art methods and even their combination on both healthy and patient datasets indicates that although the accuracy on healthy subjects are remarkable, the results for the main community (patient group) by the quantitative methods are not promising yet. The reasons rise from adopting non-matched sleep EEG features from other signal processing fields such as communication. As a conclusion, developing sleep pattern-related features deem necessary to enhance the performance of this process.

Sleep deprivation, pain and prematurity: a review study

The aim was to describe current reports in the scientific literature on sleep in the intensive care environment and sleep deprivation associated with painful experiences in premature infant. A systematic search was conducted for studies on sleep, pain, premature birth and care of the newborn. Web of Knowledge, MEDLINE, LILACS, Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, VHL and SciELO databases were consulted. The association between sleep deprivation and pain generates effects that are observed in the brain and the behavioral and physiological activity of preterm infants. Polysomnography in intensive care units and pain management in neonates allow comparison with the first year of life and term infants. We have found few references and evidence that neonatal care programs can influence sleep development and reduce the negative impact of the environment. This evidence is discussed from the perspective of how hospital intervention can improve the development of premature infants.
