A multi-modal deep neural network for multi-class liver cancer diagnosis

Liver disease is a potentially asymptomatic clinical entity that may progress to patient death. This study proposes a multi-modal deep neural network for multi-class malignant liver diagnosis. In parallel with the portal venous computed tomography (CT) scans, pathology data is utilized to prognosticate primary liver cancer variants and metastasis. The processed CT scans are fed to the deep dilated convolution neural network to explore salient features. The residual connections are further added to address vanishing gradient problems. Correspondingly, five pathological features are learned using a wide and deep network that gives a benefit of memorization with generalization. The down-scaled hierarchical features from CT scan and pathology data are concatenated to pass through fully connected layers for classification between liver cancer variants. In addition, the transfer learning of pre-trained deep dilated convolution layers assists in handling insufficient and imbalanced dataset issues. The fine-tuned network can predict three-class liver cancer variants with an average accuracy of 96.06% and an Area Under Curve (AUC) of 0.832. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to classify liver cancer variants by integrating pathology and image data, hence following the medical perspective of malignant liver diagnosis. The comparative analysis on the benchmark dataset shows that the proposed multi-modal neural network outperformed most of the liver diagnostic studies and is comparable to others.

A Multi-Scale Information Fusion Level Set for Breast Tumor Segmentation

Purpose: Mammography is considered an effective method of examination in early breast cancer screening. Massive work by distinguished researchers of breast segmentation has been proposed. However, due to the blurry boundaries of the breast tumor, the variability of its shape and the overlap with surrounding tissue, the breast tumor’s accurate segmentation still is a challenge. Methods: In this paper, we proposed a novel level set model which based on the optimized local region driven gradient enhanced level set model (OLR-GCV) to segment tumor within a region of interest (ROI) in a mammogram. Firstly, Noise, labels and artifacts are removed from breast images. The ROI is then obtained using the intuitionistic fuzzy C-means method. Finally, we used OLR-GCV method to accurately segment the breast tumor. The OLR-GCV model combines regional information, enhanced edge information and optimized Laplacian of Gaussian (LOG) energy term. The regional and enhanced edge information are used to capture local, global and gradient information of breast images. The optimized Laplacian of Gaussian (LOG) energy term is introduced in the energy functional to further optimize edge information to improve segmentation accuracy. Results: We evaluated our method on the MIAS and DDSM datasets. It yielded a Dice value of 96.86% on the former and 95.51% on the latter. Our method proposed achieves higher accuracy of segmentation than other State-of-the-art Methods. Conclusions: Our method has better segmentation performance, and can be used in clinical practice.

Removal of pectoral muscle based on topographic map and shape-shifting silhouette

BACKGROUND

In digital mammography, finding accurate breast profile segmentation of women's mammogram is considered a challenging task. The existence of the pectoral muscle may mislead the diagnosis of cancer due to its high-level similarity to breast body. In addition, some other challenges due to manifestation of the breast body pectoral muscle in the mammogram data include inaccurate estimation of the density level and assessment of the cancer cell. The discrete differentiation operator has been proven to eliminate the pectoral muscle before the analysis processing.

METHODS

We propose a novel approach to remove the pectoral muscle in terms of the mediolateral-oblique observation of a mammogram using a discrete differentiation operator. This is used to detect the edges boundaries and to approximate the gradient value of the intensity function. Further refinement is achieved using a convex hull technique. This method is implemented on dataset provided by MIAS and 20 contrast enhanced digital mammographic images.

RESULTS

To assess the performance of the proposed method, visual inspections by radiologist as well as calculation based on well-known metrics are observed. For calculation of performance metrics, the given pixels in pectoral muscle region of the input scans are calculated as ground truth.

CONCLUSIONS

Our approach tolerates an extensive variety of the pectoral muscle geometries with minimum risk of bias in breast profile than existing techniques.

Edge enhancement algorithm for low-dose X-ray fluoroscopic imaging

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Low-dose X-ray fluoroscopy has continually evolved to reduce radiation risk to patients during clinical diagnosis and surgery. However, the reduction in dose exposure causes quality degradation of the acquired images. In general, an X-ray device has a time-average pre-processor to remove the generated quantum noise. However, this pre-processor causes blurring and artifacts within the moving edge regions, and noise remains in the image. During high-pass filtering (HPF) to enhance edge detail, this noise in the image is amplified.

METHODS

In this study, a 2D edge enhancement algorithm comprising region adaptive HPF with the transient improvement (TI) method, as well as artifacts and noise reduction (ANR), was developed for degraded X-ray fluoroscopic images. The proposed method was applied in a static scene pre-processed by a low-dose X-ray fluoroscopy device. First, the sharpness of the X-ray image was improved using region adaptive HPF with the TI method, which facilitates sharpening of edge details without overshoot problems. Then, an ANR filter that uses an edge directional kernel was developed to remove the artifacts and noise that can occur during sharpening, while preserving edge details.

RESULTS

The quantitative and qualitative results obtained by applying the developed method to low-dose X-ray fluoroscopic images and visually and numerically comparing the final images with images improved using conventional edge enhancement techniques indicate that the proposed method outperforms existing edge enhancement methods in terms of objective criteria and subjective visual perception of the actual X-ray fluoroscopic image.

CONCLUSIONS

The developed edge enhancement algorithm performed well when applied to actual low-dose X-ray fluoroscopic images, not only by improving the sharpness, but also by removing artifacts and noise, including overshoot.

Iterative fuzzy segmentation for an accurate delimitation of the breast region

In mammographic images, extracting different anatomical structures and tissues types is a critical requirement for the breast cancer diagnosis. For instance, separating breast and background regions increases the accuracy and efficiency of mammographic processing algorithms. In this paper, we propose a new region-based method to properly segment breast and background regions in mammographic images. These regions are estimated by an Iterative Fuzzy Breast Segmentation method (IFBS). Based on the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) algorithm, IFBS method iteratively increases the precision of an initially extracted breast region. This proposal is evaluated using the MIAS database. Experimental results show high accuracy and reliability in breast extraction when compared with Ground-Truth (GT) images.
