Machine learning model to predict the width of maxillary central incisor from anthropological measurements

PURPOSE

To improve smile esthetics, clinicians should comprehensively analyze the face and ensure that the sizes selected for the maxillary anterior teeth are compatible with the available anthropological measurements. The inter commissural (ICW), interalar (IAW), intermedial-canthus (MCW), interlateral-canthus (LCW), and interpupillary (IPW) widths are used to determine the width of maxillary central incisors (CW). The aim of this study was to develop an automated approach using machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict central incisor width in a young Turkish population using anthropological measurements. This automation can contribute to digital dentistry and clinical decision-making.

METHODS

In the initial phase of this cross-sectional study, several ML regression models-including multiple linear regression (MLR), multi-layer-perceptron (MLP), decision-tree (DT), and random forest (RF) models-were validated to confirm the central width prediction accuracy. Datasets containing only male and female measurements, as well as combined were considered for ML model implementation, and the performance of each model was evaluated for an unbiased population dataset.

RESULTS

Compared with the other algorithms, the RF algorithm showed improved performance for all cases, with an accuracy of 96%, which represents the percentage of correct predictions. The plot reveals the applicability of the RF model in predicting the CW from anthropological measurements irrespective of the candidate's sex.

CONCLUSIONS

These results demonstrated the possibility of predicting central incisor widths based on anthropometric measurements using ML models. The accurate central incisor width prediction from these trials also indicates the applicability of the proposed model to be deployed for enhanced clinical decision-making.

Applications of contemporary artificial intelligence technology in forensic odontology as primary forensic identifier: A scoping review

Background

Forensic odontology may require a visual or clinical method during identification. Sometimes it may require forensic experts to refer to the existing technique to identify individuals, for example, by using the atlas to estimate the dental age. However, the existing technology can be a complicated procedure for a large-scale incident requiring a more significant number of forensic identifications, particularly during mass disasters. This has driven many experts to perform automation in their current practice to improve efficiency.

Objective

This article aims to evaluate current artificial intelligence applications and discuss their performance concerning the algorithm architecture used in forensic odontology.

Methods

This study summarizes the findings of 28 research papers published between 2010 and June 2022 using the Arksey and O'Malley framework, updated by the Joanna Briggs Institute Framework for Scoping Reviews methodology, highlighting the research trend of artificial intelligence technology in forensic odontology. In addition, a literature search was conducted on Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed, and the results were evaluated based on their content and significance.

Results

The potential application of artificial intelligence technology in forensic odontology can be categorized into four: (1) human bite marks, (2) sex determination, (3) age estimation, and (4) dental comparison. This powerful tool can solve humanity's problems by giving an adequate number of datasets, the appropriate implementation of algorithm architecture, and the proper assignment of hyperparameters that enable the model to perform the prediction at a very high level of performance.

Conclusion

The reviewed articles demonstrate that machine learning techniques are reliable for studies involving continuous features such as morphometric parameters. However, machine learning models do not strictly require large training datasets to produce promising results. In contrast, deep learning enables the processing of unstructured data, such as medical images, which require large volumes of data. Occasionally, transfer learning was used to overcome the limitation of data. In the meantime, this method's capacity to automatically learn task-specific feature representations has made it a significant success in forensic odontology.

Cleaning the palate and tongue without nausea: a mixed methods study exploring the appropriate depth and direction of oral care

BACKGROUND

It is advisable to clean the palate and tongue thoroughly during oral care to protect against nosocomial infections. However, improper cleaning may cause nausea. To date, no robust data are available regarding how to implement this procedure properly. Furthermore, traditional cotton balls, forceps and normal saline are still used in clinical in China. This mixed methods study aimed to explore the appropriate depth and direction of cleaning methods for palates and tongues without causing nausea and the factors influencing cleaning depth and discomfort in traditional oral care.

METHODS

Our study recruited students (n = 276) from a medical university. The first phase was a quantitative study, in which forceps were slowly inserted into their throats until the gag reflex was triggered, and then, the insertion depth was measured. After that, participants were randomly divided into two groups. In group A, palates and tongues were cleaned coronally and then sagittally, with the converse order used for group B. The extent of nausea was measured. Additionally, the qualitative data were types of discomfort other than nausea reported by the participants.

RESULTS

The tolerable depths (without causing nausea) for cleaning the palate and tongue were 6.75 ± 1.07 cm and 6.92 ± 1.11 cm, respectively. Participants of male sex and with high BMI (overweight/obese) were associated with greater tolerable cleaning depth. The extent of nausea caused by cleaning both the palate and the tongue sagittally was higher than that elicited by coronal cleaning (p = 0.025 and p = 0.003, respectively). Other discomforts included itching, saltiness and coldness.

CONCLUSION

It is appropriate to increase the cleaning depth of the palate and tongue for adult males and overweight/obese individuals. Moreover, coronal cleaning causes lower levels of nausea, and traditional oral care appliances should be improved.

Minimal ensemble based on subset selection using ECG to diagnose categories of CAN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Early diagnosis of cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is critical for reversing or decreasing its progression and prevent complications. Diagnostic accuracy or precision is one of the core requirements of CAN detection. As the standard Ewing battery tests suffer from a number of shortcomings, research in automating and improving the early detection of CAN has recently received serious attention in identifying additional clinical variables and designing advanced ensembles of classifiers to improve the accuracy or precision of CAN diagnostics. Although large ensembles are commonly proposed for the automated diagnosis of CAN, large ensembles are characterized by slow processing speed and computational complexity. This paper applies ECG features and proposes a new ensemble-based approach for diagnosis of CAN progression.

METHODS

We introduce a Minimal Ensemble Based On Subset Selection (MEBOSS) for the diagnosis of all categories of CAN including early, definite and atypical CAN. MEBOSS is based on a novel multi-tier architecture applying classifier subset selection as well as the training subset selection during several steps of its operation. Our experiments determined the diagnostic accuracy or precision obtained in 5 × 2 cross-validation for various options employed in MEBOSS and other classification systems.

RESULTS

The experiments demonstrate the operation of the MEBOSS procedure invoking the most effective classifiers available in the open source software environment SageMath. The results of our experiments show that for the large DiabHealth database of CAN related parameters MEBOSS outperformed other classification systems available in SageMath and achieved 94% to 97% precision in 5 × 2 cross-validation correctly distinguishing any two CAN categories to a maximum of five categorizations including control, early, definite, severe and atypical CAN.

CONCLUSIONS

These results show that MEBOSS architecture is effective and can be recommended for practical implementations in systems for the diagnosis of CAN progression.
