Investigating the effect of an education plan based on the health belief model on the physical activity of women who are at risk for hypertension

BACKGROUND

Hypertension is the main risk factor of many diseases and the main reason of death all over the world. Because the signs of hypertension are not clear, people do not feel its dangers and do not believe they are at risk. This problem makes preventing hypertension a great challenge for the health system. One factor that is related to lifestyle and is effective in preventing hypertension is increasing exercise. The aim of this study is investigate the effect of an education plan based on the health belief model on the physical activity of women who are at risk for hypertension.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This is a field experimental study. Field of study was two health care centers in Isfahan, which were selected through simple random sampling. Ninety-two females who were at risk for hypertension were the subjects of study. Subjects were selected through systematic sampling. Beck questionnaire was used to evaluate the physical activity of both experimental and control group subjects before and 2 months after the intervention. The intervention plan was three education sections that were conducted in 4 weeks. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistical tests and inferential tests of repetitive variance analysis and t-test through SPSS.

RESULTS

The results showed that the average of physical activity increased significantly in the intervention group 2 months after education (P = 0.03).

CONCLUSIONS

The findings of the study confirm the efficiency of education plan based on the health belief model on the physical activity of women who are at risk for hypertension.

Knowledge, attitudes and current practice of Jordanian family physicians about prescribing aspirin in primary and secondary prevention of vascular diseases: a self-reported survey

BACKGROUND

Long-term aspirin therapy is crucial for patients with increased risk of occlusive vascular diseases. However, inconsistencies in the methods for risk assessment and the perception among health care providers are major contributing factors for challenges in risk assessment.

METHODS

A questionnaire was distributed to a total of 124 family physicians working at two university teaching centers and Ministry of Health primary health care centers in Jordan.

RESULTS

A majority of the physicians reported prescribing aspirin for patients if they have peripheral vascular disease (93%), post-coronary artery bypass graft (92%), stroke (90%), or stable angina (95%). A smaller percentage of physicians reported that they prescribe aspirin if patients have atrial fibrillation (81%) or acute myocardial infarction (85%). The percentage of physicians who prescribe aspirin markedly declined when patients have potential bleeding disorder (52%) or asthma (52%). For patients without cardiovascular diseases but with one or more risk factors, the prophylactic use of aspirin was reported by 85% to 95% of family physicians.

CONCLUSIONS

The presence of co-morbidity along with vascular diseases tended to hinder physicians from prescribing aspirin even when it is indicated. A majority of family physicians recommends the use of aspirin in primary prevention in spite of its questionable or even negative benefits. Furthermore, self-reported aspirin prescribing rates among physicians in Jordan are higher than those reported by physicians in the U.S. and Europe. Therefore, we believe that proper dissemination of updated evidence-based treatment guidelines is required to ensure appropriate and efficient preventive services for cardiovascular diseases.

Systematic review of cardiovascular disease in women: assessing the risk

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death for women. In an effort to reduce cardiovascular burden for women, identifying risk factors and increasing awareness of sex differences are fundamental. This systematic review examines cardiovascular disease risk for women. A search of the literature was undertaken using key health databases. Search terms used were cardiovascular disease AND women OR gender. Additional references were manually identified from this literature; 58 articles were reviewed in total. On average, cardiovascular disease presents 10 years later in women compared to men. By this time, they are more likely to suffer from more comorbidities, placing them at higher risk. The complexity of cardiovascular disease identification in women is accentuated through atypical symptoms, and has the potential to lead to delayed and/or misdiagnosis. It is clear through identifying sex differentiation in cardiovascular risk factors that there has been an increased awareness of symptom presentation for women. In light of the sex differences in risk factors, sex-specific aspects should be more intensively considered in research/practice to improve clinical outcomes for female cardiovascular disease patients.

Primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of cardiovascular disease in patients with HIV disease: a guide for nurse practitioners

HIV infection elevates a patient's risk for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), due in part to direct effects of increased infection-producing inflammation and to drugs used to treat the infection, which can have untoward effects on serum lipid profiles. HIV-infected older adults often present with multiple comorbidities, including CVD, making disease management more challenging. Treatment paradigms are evolving, and nurse practitioners (NPs) are expected to play an ever-larger role in the management of HIV infection. Due to their accessibility and close patient contact, NPs are especially well suited to work with and educate patients to manage multiple risk factors. Appropriate use of primary, secondary, and tertiary CVD prevention strategies, including education to modify lifestyle risks, individualized antiretroviral treatment regimens to achieve serum lipid targets, and use of additional lipid-modifying strategies to minimize a patient's overall CVD risk profile will be important throughout the treatment lifecycle.
