Role function and job satisfaction of community nurses in China: A cross-sectional study

AIM

To evaluate role function and job satisfaction, determine their relationship, and explore the factors influencing job satisfaction among community nurses in China.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

METHODS

This study was conducted between March and June 2020 on a cluster random sampling of 302 community nurses from 24 community health centres and stations in Xi'an, China. Self-reported data were collected using the Demographics Questionnaire, Role Function of Community Nurses Questionnaire, and Job Satisfaction of Community Nurses Scale. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to analyse data.

RESULTS

Community nurses' main role function was organiser and manager (M = 2.56, SD = 0.987) and coordinator (M = 2.43, SD = 0.971). The lowest job satisfaction was for salary and benefits (M = 3.12, SD = 0.891) and personal development (M = 3.65, SD = 0.738). A positive correlation was found between the roles of caregiver, educator, navigator, and salary and benefits (p < 0.05) among community nurses. Multiple linear regression analyses indicated that monthly income and working experience in nursing explained 61.1% of the variance in job satisfaction.

Home health nurses for children with invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV): Perspectives on gaps and opportunities for recruitment

BACKGROUND

Children with medical complexity (CMC) dependent on invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) often require private duty home nursing; however, there are ubiquitous shortages. Home health is an especially vulnerable nursing sector because of less competitive wages and less prominence during nursing education. We sought to understand nurses' perspectives on gaps and opportunities for recruiting home care nurses for children with IMV.

METHODS

Home health nurses experienced with children with IMV were recruited for semi-structured interviews. The interview guide served as the initial codebook which was iteratively modified as themes emerged. This study presents an analysis of quotes related to field entry and home health experiences.

FINDINGS

Twenty interviews were completed with primarily female (95%) participants. The majority worked full-time (60%) and had an average of 11 years of experience. During nursing education, participants described a lack of exposure to private duty home health nursing. Many entered the field serendipitously, because of a passion for care of CMC or to continue care for a hospitalized patient. Challenges to employment included lack of competitive wages and benefits. Nurses remained in the field because of the rewarding work with patients and families, schedule flexibility, slower pace, and one-on-one care.

DISCUSSION

Home health nurses for IMV describe lack of employment benefits. However, the opportunity to work longitudinally and individually with patients was rewarding.

APPLICATION TO PRACTICE

Creative solutions must be explored to recruit and sustain this essential workforce, including exposure during nursing education, improved training and benefits, and targeted recruiting.

The Hybrid Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making Model for Home Healthcare Nurses’ Job Satisfaction Evaluation and Improvement

Objectives: To investigate and evaluate the key factors related to job satisfaction performance of home healthcare nurses (HHNs).

Methods: A total of 31 HHNs from three community hospitals in Zhejiang province were invited to participate in the study. They completed a questionnaire survey based on the home healthcare nurse job satisfaction scale (HHNJS) from February to March 2022. Consistent fuzzy preference relation (CFPR) methods and important-performance analysis (IPA) were used to obtain the attribute weights and performance for HHNs job satisfaction.

Results: The results showed that the attributes of C₁₃, C₁₄, C₁₅, C₂₃, C₂₄, C₄₂, C₅₁, and C₅₂ were key factors influencing HHNs job satisfaction.

Conclusion: The hybrid multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model can help home-healthcare-agency administrators better understand the key factors related to HHNs job satisfaction and establish reasonable improvement strategies.

A Sustainable, Interactive Elderly Healthcare System for Nursing Homes: An Interdisciplinary Design

Population ageing becomes a perplexing conundrum with social and economic development. Many senior citizens are now empty nesters because the younger generation prefer to stay in metropolises for a better life. Therefore, living in a nursing home is a popular choice for the aged. This objective-oriented paper proposes a sustainable elderly healthcare system for nursing homes. The main work is the design and implementation of a new rapid and interactive assistance service. Based on cost-effective fingerprint indoor-positioning technology, the alert message that a person is at risk will be immediately sent to nearby people before professionals arrive. Warning messages are available when nearing marked areas (e.g., slippery floors). The parallel path-finding algorithm plays a significant role in finding nearby people and alerting people who approach specific areas. Furthermore, this system provides application programming interfaces to connect to health devices, such as smart bracelets, watches, and glasses. In general, the system is designed to ensure the safety of the elderly and improve management efficiency, which corresponds to present smart elderly care proposals from governments.

Suffering and defense mechanisms: an analysis of the work of Primary Health Care nurses

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the suffering and coping strategies of nurses working in Primary Health Care considering the psychodynamics of their work.

METHODS

Descriptive study with a qualitative approach, carried out with 11 nurses working in Primary Health Care. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, systematized, and interpreted using Bardin's content analysis method applied to recurrent themes.

RESULTS

The suffering factors related to work in Primary Health Care are difficulties with management, the fragile structure of the health support network, and conflicts with the users. Defensive strategies to minimize these difficulties are the support of hierarchical superiors, the empowerment of the community and users, and communication between team members.

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS

It is important that there be changes in the organization of this line of work to improve the workers' health.

Identification of Measures Affecting Job Satisfaction and Levels of Perceived Stress and Burnout among Home Health Nurses of a Developing Asian Country

BACKGROUND

Factors affecting job satisfaction of home health nurses are studied.

METHODS

PSS-10, CBI and HHNJS are used to measure the perceived stress, burnout of home health nurses and Job Satisfaction.

RESULTS

The significant predictors for Job satisfaction were Relationship with organization, Autonomy and control, Salary and Benefits as 82% of variation in job satisfaction was explained by these, (F change (3, 144) = 236.72, p < .001).

CONCLUSION

Agencies should work upon improving the dimensions such as the "relationship with the organization", "Autonomy and control" and "Salary and Benefits" to increases the Job satisfaction of home health nurses.
