Abstract
BACKGROUND Female sex workers (FSWs) are marginalized groups of the population who have limited access to healthcare and a higher risk of HIV infection due to biobehavioral and structural risk factors. Although it is known that the Eastern and Southern African region is affected by the highest HIV incidence and prevalence, understanding the burden among FSWs in the region remains limited. We aimed to assess the pooled prevalence and associated factors of HIV in this vulnerable population. METHODS Relevant studies were searched on PubMed, Embase, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Hinari, African Journals Online (AJOL), Google, and Google Scholar. The searching mechanism was constructed using keywords identified by CoCoPop (Condition, Context, and Population) framework and medical subject heading terms to recruit studies published between January 1, 2015 and March 30, 2024. Observational studies that estimate the prevalence or incidence or associated factors of HIV among FSWs, even if FSWs were not the main focus of the study, were included. The quality of included studies was assessed using Joana Brigg's Institute checklist. Data were extracted and analyzed using STATA 17 software. To estimate the pooled effect sizes with their 95% confidence intervals, a random effect model was fitted. The I2 statistic was used to evaluate heterogeneity. Funnel plot and Egger's regression test were utilized to assess the small study effect. Publication bias was managed using trim-and-fill analysis. Subgroup and sensitivity analysis were considered to handle heterogeneity among studies. RESULTS A total of 54 articles with 78,747 FSWs who had successful HIV biological test were included in the analysis. The pooled prevalence of HIV among FSWs in Eastern and Southern Africa was 36.0% (95% CI: 31.0%-41.0%). Regionally, the pooled prevalence was 59.0% (95% CI: 53.0%-64.0%) and 29.0% (95% CI: 25.0%-34.0%) in Southern and Eastern Africa, respectively. Age above 35 (POR = 7.35; 95% CI: 5.26, 10.28) and 25-34 years (POR = 2.91; 95% CI: 2.02, 4.21), being married (POR = 1.33; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.66), divorced (POR = 1.72; 95% CI: 1.39, 2.13), and widowed (POR = 2.70; 95% CI: 2.09, 3.49), primary education (POR = 1.29; 95% CI:1.08, 1.55), history of sexually transmitted infection (POR = 1.51; 95% CI: 1.20, 1.90), syphilis (POR = 2.57; 95% CI: 1.66, 3.98), Hepatitis B infection (POR = 2.60; 95% CI: 1.07,6.32), drinking alcohol (POR = 1.21; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.45) and injectable drug use before sex (POR = 1.75; 95% CI: 1.24, 2.47) were found significantly associated with the increased risk of HIV infection among FSWs. CONCLUSION These data suggest an urgent need to improve access to HIV prevention programs for FSWs. Providing behavioral interventions including reduction of alcohol and injectable drug use before sex, initiating tailored healthcare services, strengthening the psychosocial and legal support network, and fostering partnership might reduce the burden in the region. Clinicians could facilitate early detection and treatment of STIs, and Hepatitis B virus infection. Abstract
The bacterial pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an urgent global health problem due to increasing numbers of infections, coupled with rampant antibiotic resistance. Vaccines against gonorrhea are being prioritized to combat drug-resistant N. gonorrhoeae. Meningococcal serogroup B vaccines such as four-component meningococcal B vaccine (4CMenB) are predicted by epidemiology studies to cross-protect individuals from natural infection with N. gonorrhoeae and elicit antibodies that cross-react with N. gonorrhoeae. Evaluation of vaccine candidates for gonorrhea requires a suite of assays for predicting efficacy in vitro and in animal models of infection, including the role of antibodies elicited by immunization. Here, we present the development and optimization of assays to evaluate antibody functionality after immunization of mice: antibody binding to intact N. gonorrhoeae, serum bactericidal activity, and opsonophagocytic killing activity using primary human neutrophils [polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs)]. These assays were developed with purified antibodies against N. gonorrhoeae and used to evaluate serum from mice that were vaccinated with 4CMenB or given alum as a negative control. Results from these assays will help prioritize gonorrhea vaccine candidates for advanced preclinical to early clinical studies and will contribute to identifying correlates and mechanisms of immune protection against N. gonorrhoeae.

Effectiveness and Safety of Dolutegravir Versus Efavirenz-Based Antiviral Regimen in People Living With HIV-1 in Sichuan Province of China: A Real-World Study. Abstract
BACKGROUND The application time of dolutegravir (DTG) is relatively short, and the treatment experience is insufficient. Therefore, evidence is required to shed more light on the effectiveness and safety issues of DTG in China. OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness and safety of a DTG vs. efavirenz (EFV) antiviral regimens (the current mainstream regimen). METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study. Data of people with HIV (PWH), who started initial DTG-based or EFV-based antiretroviral therapy at the Chengdu Public Health Clinical Medical Center from January 2018 to October 2020, were collected. Effectiveness indicators such as CD4+ T-cell recovery and HIV viral suppression, and safety indicators, including blood routine, liver and kidney function, and occurrence of abnormal blood lipids after DTG vs. EFV-based antiviral regimen treatments, were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 656 patients were eligible, of which 611 patients were included in the study. Most of the PWHs in our center were young men (86.25%). Nearly one-third of the participants were coinfected with syphilis. The median baseline HIV viral load was 4.70 log10 copies/mL. The median CD4+ T-cell count was 254 cells/mm3. More participants started on EFV-based regimens than DTG-based regimens (82.32% vs. 17.67%). The time to reach the target value (CD4 > 350 cells/mm3) in the DTG group was shorter than that in the EFV group (408 days vs. 522 days), and the percentage of reaching the CD4 target value of the DTG group was higher than that of the EFV group (41.04% vs. 33.76%) in 1 year. The effect of virologic suppression (<50 copies/mL) in the DTG group was superior to that in the EFV group. The use of DTG-containing treatment regimens was significantly related to a quicker virologic suppression (hazard ratio, 1.76; 95% confidence interval of 1.40-2.21, P < 0.0001). The safety data analysis of laboratory indicators showed that there was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse events between the 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS A DTG-based regimen may be more conducive to the CD4 recovery than the EFV-based regimen. The virologic suppression of the DTG group may be superior to that of the EFV group. DTG-based regimens might be the preferred treatment option for people with HIV for initial HIV treatment.

Abstract
Background Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major health problem in most countries of the world, particularly in developing countries where the resources and technology to diagnose and treat them are limited. Currently, there is limited data on STIs and risk factors for these infections in pregnant women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), especially in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This review provides data on the prevalence and risk factors for STIs in pregnant women living with HIV from SSA. This review also describes the association between STIs and HIV on pregnancy and birth outcomes as well as highlights the importance of laboratory-based diagnosis of STIs. Method An electronic search of online databases was used to find and collect relevant research articles connected to the prevalence, adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, health complications and risk factors associated with STIs and HIV in pregnant women from SSA. The search was limited to articles published in English. Relevant studies were identified by searching literature from January 2001 to date. The search yielded 4709 results. Results In SSA, STIs are highly prevalent in pregnant women and are widely known to be linked with an increased risk of poor maternal and neonatal outcomes. These infections are often asymptomatic and highly prevalent in pregnant women. The screening of STIs in pregnant women living with HIV can reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) and screening and treatment for STIs can also prevent adverse perinatal outcomes. It is important to recognise regional and national STI epidemics in order to promote STI prevention and control interventions considering the test and treat approach as opposed to syndromic management. Conclusion This review highlights the need to use diagnostic screening methods instead of syndromic STI management in SSA. Moreover, more research into effective prevention and treatment measures for STIs in pregnant women is urgently required.

Abstract
Most cancers are related to lifestyle and environmental risk factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, dietary habits, and environment (occupational exposures). A growing interest in the association between sexual activity (SA) and the development of different types of tumors in both men and women has been recorded in recent years. The aim of the present systematic review is to describe and critically discuss the current evidence regarding the association between SA and male genital cancers (prostatic, penile, and testicular), and to analyze the different theories and biological mechanisms reported in the literature. A comprehensive bibliographic search in the MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was performed in July 2021. Papers in the English language without chronological restrictions were selected. Retrospective and prospective primary clinical studies, in addition to previous systematic reviews and meta-analyses, were included. A total of 19 studies, including 953,704 patients were selected. Case reports, conference abstracts, and editorial comments were excluded. Men with more than 20 sexual partners in their lifetime, and those reporting more than 21 ejaculations per month, reported a decreased risk of overall and less aggressive prostate cancer (PCa). About 40% of penile cancers (PCs) were HPV-associated, with HPV 16 being the dominant genotype. Data regarding the risk of HPV in circumcised patients are conflicting, although circumcision appears to have a protective role against PC. Viral infections and epididymo-orchitis are among the main sex-related risk factors studied for testicular cancer (TC); however, data in the literature are limited. Testicular trauma can allow the identification of pre-existing TC. SA is closely associated with the development of PC through high-risk HPV transmission; in this context, phimosis appears to be a favoring factor. Sexual behaviors appear to play a significant role in PCa pathogenesis, probably through inflammatory mechanisms; however, protective sexual habits have also been described. A direct correlation between SA and TC has not yet been proven, although infections remain the most studied sex-related factor.
