Flexibility of metal-organic frameworks for separations: utilization, suppression and regulation

Adaptive Pore Opening to Form Tailored Adsorption Sites in a Cooperatively Flexible Framework Enables Record Inverse Propane/Propylene Separation

A proposed low-energy alternative to the separation of alkanes from alkenes by energy-intensive cryogenic distillation is separation by porous adsorbents. Unfortunately, most adsorbents preferentially take up the desired, high-value major component alkene, requiring frequent regeneration. Adsorbents with inverse selectivity for the minor component alkane would enable the direct production of purified, reagent-grade alkene, greatly reducing global energy consumption. However, such materials are exceedingly rare, especially for propane/propylene separation. Here, we report that through adaptive and spontaneous pore size and shape adaptation to optimize an ensemble of weak noncovalent interactions, the structurally responsive metal-organic framework CdIF-13 (sod-Cd(benzimidazolate)2) exhibits inverse selectivity for propane over propylene with record-setting separation performance under industrially relevant temperature, pressure, and mixture conditions. Powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements combined with first-principles calculations yield atomic-scale insight and reveal the induced fit mechanism of adsorbate-specific pore adaptation and ensemble interactions between ligands and adsorbates. Dynamic column breakthrough measurements confirm that CdIF-13 displays selectivity under mixed-component conditions of varying ratios, with a record measured selectivity factor of α ≈ 3 at 95:5 propylene:propane at 298 K and 1 bar. When sequenced with a low-cost rigid adsorbent, we demonstrated the direct purification of propylene under ambient conditions. This combined atomic-level structural characterization and performance testing firmly establishes how cooperatively flexible materials can be capable of unprecedented separation factors.

Ligand Substitution: An Effective Way for Tuning Structures of ZIF-7 Nanoparticles (NPs) and Improving Energy Recovery Performance of ZIF/PA TFN Membranes

It is an important initiative to reduce the building energy consumption using energy recovering ventilation (ERV) systems. The application of ERV systems is hindered by the low CO₂ barrier performance of commercial total heat exchange membranes (THEMs) that lead to unsatisfactory indoor air refreshing rate, and there is an urgent need for THEMs that have improved CO₂ barrier properties and effective energy recovery efficiencies. Here, we report the formation of novel ZIF/PA TFN THEMs based on ZIF-7-X nanoparticles (NPs) with "core-shell" structures and tunable particle sizes, formed from benzimidazole (BIM) ligands and BIM substituted by -NH₂, -CH₃, -C₂H₅, and -C₃H₇ functional groups. The NPs were mixed with pyr omellitic triformyl chloride (TMC) in the organic phase during the interface polymerization process to form ZIF/PA TFN membranes. The total heat exchange performance of ZIF/PA TFN membranes could be effectively modified by the type and quantity of ZIF-7-X NPs added. The CO₂ barrier properties and water vapor permeability of ZIF/PA TFN membranes could be improved by the addition of optimal levels of ZIF-7-X NPs, showing low CO₂ permeance of 7.76 GPU, high H₂O permeance of 663.8 GPU, and excellent enthalpy exchange efficiency of 72.1%. This work provided an effective strategy for tuning not only the nanostructures of ZIF-7 fillers but also the CO₂ barrier properties of the formed ZIF/PA TFN membranes.

Challenges in Developing MOF-Based Membranes for Gas Separation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates for membrane gas separation. MOF-based membranes include pure MOF membranes and MOF-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). This Perspective discusses the challenges for the next stage of the development of MOF-based membranes based on research conducted in the past decade. We focused on three major issues associated with pure MOF membranes. First, some MOF compounds have been overstudied, despite the availability of numerous MOFs. Second, gas adsorption and diffusion in MOFs are often independently investigated. The correlation between adsorption and diffusion has seldom been discussed. Third, we identify the importance of characterizing the gas distribution in MOFs to understand the structure-property relationships for gas adsorption and diffusion in MOF membranes. For MOF-based MMMs, engineering the MOF-polymer interface is essential for achieving the desired separation performance. Various approaches to modify the MOF surface or polymer molecular structure have been proposed to improve the MOF-polymer interface. Herein, we present defect engineering as a facile and efficient approach for engineering the MOF-polymer interfacial morphology and its extended application for various gas separations.

Status and future trends of hollow fiber biogas separation membrane fabrication and modification techniques

With the increasing global demand for energy, renewable and sustainable biogas has attracted considerable attention. However, the presence of various gases such as methane, carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrogen, and hydrogen sulfide in biogas, and the potential emission of acid gases, which may adversely influence the environment, limits the efficient application of biogas in many fields. Consequently, researchers have focused on the upgrade and purification of biogas to eliminate impurities and obtain high-quality and high-purity biomethane with an increased combustion efficiency. In this context, the removal of CO₂ gas, which is the most abundant contaminant in biogas, is of significance. Compared to conventional biogas purification processes such as water scrubbing, chemical absorption, pressure swing adsorption, and cryogenic separation, advanced membrane separation technologies are simpler to implement, easier to scale, and incur lower costs. Notably, hollow fiber membranes enhance the gas separation efficiency and decrease costs because their large specific surface area provides a greater range of gas transport. Several reviews have described biogas upgrading technologies and gas separation membranes composed of different materials. In this review, five commonly used commercial biogas upgrading technologies, as well as biological microalgae-based techniques are compared, the advantages and limitations of polymeric and mixed matrix hollow fiber membranes are highlighted, and methods to fabricate and modify hollow fiber membranes are described. This will provide more ideas and methods for future low-cost, large-scale industrial biogas upgrading using membrane technology.

Dynamic metal-organic frameworks for the separation of hydrogen isotopes

Reversible structural transformation upon exposure to external stimuli can lead to breathing effect or gate-opening phenomena for dynamic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which endow them with excellent gas separation performance. The separation of hydrogen isotopes remains a huge challenge due to their nearly identical physical and chemical properties. The unique feature of dynamic MOFs, especially structural transition triggered by isotopes or by temperature, maximally enhances kinetic quantum sieving and contributes to the highly selective separation of hydrogen isotopes. Herein, we present some examples for the separation of hydrogen isotopes based on dynamic frameworks, and we expect to attract increasing attention to this research field.

Tuning the Adsorption Selectivity of ZIF-8 by Amorphization

Amorphous metal-organic frameworks (a_m MOFs) with a partially collapsed structure are a new category of porous hybrid materials. Here, solid-state amorphization of ZIF-8 was achieved by mechanical compression at 0.75 GPa. The compression-induced amorphous ZIF-8 (a_m ZIF-8) had a collapsed structure, but retained partial porosity. Benefiting from the deformed channel, the resultant a_m ZIF-8 exhibited preferable adsorption of C₃ H₆ , resulting in higher thermodynamic adsorption selectivity of C₃ H₆ /C₃ H₈ (6.72) than the crystalline counterparts (1.06). Further, a_m ZIF-8 achieved complete separation of an equimolar C₃ H₆ /C₃ H₈ mixture with the first breakthrough of C₃ H₈ . a_m ZIF-8 also displayed an enhancement in CO₂ /N₂ and CO₂ /CH₄ adsorption selectivities. More importantly, a self-standing a_m ZIF-8 membrane with boundary-free microstructure was constructed for the first time, and exhibited separation potential for H₂ /CH₄ , CO₂ /N₂ , CO₂ /CH₄ , and C₃ H₆ /C₃ H₈ with ideal selectivities of 14.79, 12.83, 16.23, and 2.67, respectively.

Flexibility of Metal-Organic Framework Tunable by Crystal Size at the Micrometer to Submillimeter Scale for Efficient Xylene Isomer Separation

Understanding, controlling, and utilizing the flexibility of adsorbents are of great importance and difficulty. Analogous with conventional solid materials, downsizing to the nanoscale is emerging as a possible strategy for controlling the flexibility of porous coordination polymers (or metal-organic frameworks). We report a unique flexibility controllable by crystal size at the micrometer to submillimeter scale. Template removal transforms [Cu₂(pypz)₂]·0.5p-xylene (MAF-36, Hpypz = 4-(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)pyridine) with one-dimensional channels to α-[Cu₂(pypz)₂] with discrete small cavities, and further heating gives a nonporous isomer β-[Cu₂(pypz)₂]. Both isomers can adsorb p-xylene to give [Cu₂(pypz)₂]·0.5p-xylene, meaning the coexistence of guest-driven flexibility and shape-memory behavior. The phase transition temperature from α-[Cu₂(pypz)₂] to β-[Cu₂(pypz)₂] decreased from ~270°C to ~150°C by increasing the crystal size from the micrometer to the submillimeter scale, ca. 2-3 orders larger than those of other size-dependent behaviors. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction showed coordination bond reconstitution and chirality inversion mechanisms for the phase transition, which provides a sufficiently high energy barrier to stabilize the metastable phase without the need of downsizing to the nanoscale. By virtue of the crystalline molecular imprinting and gate-opening effects, α-[Cu₂(pypz)₂] and β-[Cu₂(pypz)₂] show unprecedentedly high p-xylene selectivities of 16 and 51, respectively, as well as ultrafast adsorption kinetics (<2 minutes), for xylene isomers.

Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Membranes for Light Olefin/Paraffin Separation

Propylene/propane and ethylene/ethane separations are performed by energy-intensive distillation processes, and membrane separation may provide substantial energy and capital cost savings. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have emerged as promising membrane materials for olefin/paraffin separation due to their tunable pore size and chemistry property, and excellent chemical and thermal stability. In this review, we summarize the recent advances on ZIF membranes for propylene/propane and ethylene/ethane separations. Membrane fabrication methods such as in situ crystallization, seeded growth, counter-diffusion synthesis, interfacial microfluidic processing, vapor-phase and current-driven synthesis are presented. The gas permeation and separation characteristics and membrane stability are also discussed.
