Forced Interactions: Ionic Polymers at Charged Surfactant Interfaces

Characterizing electrostatic interactions at heterogeneous interfaces is critical for developing a fundamental description of the dynamic processes at charged interfaces. Water-in-oil reverse micelles (RMs) offer a high degree of tunability across composition, polarity, and temperature, making them ideal systems for studying interactions at heterogeneous liquid-liquid interfaces. In the present study, we use a combination of ultrafast two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to determine the picosecond interfacial dynamics in RMs containing binary compositions of sorbitan monostearate and anionic or cationic cosurfactants, which are used to tune the ratio of charged to nonionic surfactants at the interface. The positively charged polyethylenimine (PEI) polymer is encapsulated within the RMs, and the carbonyl stretching mode of sorbitan monostearate reports on the interfacial hydrogen-bond populations and dynamics. The results show that hydrogen-bond populations are altered through the inclusion of both negatively and positively charged cosurfactants. Charged surfactants increase interfacial water penetration into the surfactant layer, and the surface localization of polymers decreases water penetration. Local hydrogen-bond dynamics undergo a slowdown with the inclusion of charged surfactants, and the encapsulation of polymers results in similar effects, irrespective of the charge.

Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Mixtures: A Pathway to Smart Foams

This review deals with liquid foams stabilized by polyelectrolyte/surfactant (PS) complexes in aqueous solution. It briefly reviews all the important aspects of foam physics at several scales, from interfaces to macroscopic foams, needed to understand the basics of these complex systems, focusing on those particular aspects of foams stabilized by PS mixtures. The final section includes a few examples of smart foams based on PS complexes that have been reported recently in the literature. These PS complexes open an opportunity to develop new intelligent dispersed materials with potential in many fields, such as oil industry, environmental remediation, and pharmaceutical industry, among others. However, there is much work to be done to understand the mechanism involved in the stabilization of foams with PS complexes. Understanding those underlying mechanisms is vital to successfully formulate smart systems. This review is written in the hope of stimulating further work in the physics of PS foams and, particularly, in the search for responsive foams based on polymer-surfactant mixtures.

Investigating pore-opening in hydrogel foams at the scale of free-standing thin films

Controlling the pore connectivity of polymer foams is key for most of their applications, ranging from liquid uptake, mechanics, and acoustic/thermal insulation to tissue engineering. Despite its importance, the scientific phenomena governing the pore-opening processes remain poorly understood, requiring tedious trial-and-error procedures for property optimisation. This lack of understanding is partly explained by the high complexity of the different interrelated, multi-scale processes which take place as the foam transforms from an initially fluid foam into a solid foam. To progress in this field, we take inspiration from long-standing research on liquid foams and thin films to develop model experiments in a microfluidic "Thin Film Pressure Balance". These experiments allow us to investigate isolated thin films under well-controlled environmental conditions reproducing those arising within a foam undergoing cross-linking and drying. Using the example of alginate hydrogel films, we correlate the evolution of isolated thin films undergoing gelation and drying with the evolution of the rheological properties of the same alginate solution in bulk. We introduce the overall approach and use a first set of results to propose a starting point for the phenomenological description of the different types of pore-opening processes and the classification of the resulting pore-opening types. On the origin of oscillatory interactions between surfaces mediated by polyelectrolyte solution

We use a numerical implementation of polymer classical density functional theory with an incompressibility condition to study the system consisting of nonadsorbing polyelectrolytes confined by two planar surfaces and quantify the effective interaction between the two planar surfaces as a function of the polyelectrolyte and salt concentrations. Our results indicate that for the uncharged surfaces (and weakly charged surfaces), the effective interaction primarily consists of a short-range attraction due to the depletion followed by repulsion due to the electric double layer overlapping and electrostatic correlations. For salt-free and low salt concentration systems, the magnitude of the repulsion barrier is determined by the overlap between the electric double layers, while at relatively high salt concentrations, the magnitude of the repulsion barrier is determined by the electrostatic correlations. Due to the competition between the electric double layer and the electrostatic correlations, the magnitude of the repulsion barrier varies nonmonotonically. In contrast, a mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann treatment of the electrostatics predicts a monotonically decreasing repulsion barrier with increasing salt concentration. At moderate salt concentrations, our theory predicts oscillatory interaction profiles. A comparison with the mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann treatment of electrostatics suggests that the oscillations are due primarily to electrostatic correlations.

Current applications of foams formed from mixed surfactant-polymer solutions

Foams cannot be generated without the use of special foaming agents, as pure liquids do not foam. The most common foaming agents are surfactants, however often for foam stability one active agent is not enough, it is necessary to add other component to increase foam lifetime. Foams on everyday use are mostly made from mixture of different components. Properly chosen combinations of two active ingredients lead to a faster foam formation and increased foam stability. During the last decade polymers (mainly polyelectrolytes and proteins) have become frequently used additives to foaming solutions. Mixtures of surfactants and polymers often demonstrate different foaming properties in comparison to surfactant only or polymer only solutions. The nature of surfactant-polymer interactions is complicated and prediction of resulting foaming properties of such formulations is not straightforward. Properties and foaming of surfactant-polymer mixtures are discussed as well as current applications of foams and foaming agents as foams are widely used in cosmetics, pharmaceutics, medicine and the food industry.

Enhancement of foamability and foam stability induced by interactions between a hyperbranched exopolysaccharide and a zwitterionic surfactant dodecyl sulfobetaine

Weak hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between a zwitterionic surfactant dodecyl sulfobetaine (DSB) and a hyperbranched exopolysaccharide (EPS) enhanced considerably the stability and foamability of EPS/DSB foam.

Foaming and foam stability for mixed polymer-surfactant solutions: effects of surfactant type and polymer charge

Solutions of surfactant-polymer mixtures often exhibit different foaming properties, compared to the solutions of the individual components, due to the strong tendency for formation of polymer-surfactant complexes in the bulk and on the surface of the mixed solutions. A generally shared view in the literature is that electrostatic interactions govern the formation of these complexes, for example between anionic surfactants and cationic polymers. In this study we combine foam tests with model experiments to evaluate and explain the effect of several polymer-surfactant mixtures on the foaminess and foam stability of the respective solutions. Anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants (SDS, C(12)TAB, and C(12)EO(23)) were studied to clarify the role of surfactant charge. Highly hydrophilic cationic and nonionic polymers (polyvinylamine and polyvinylformamide, respectivey) were chosen to eliminate the (more trivial) effect of direct hydrophobic interactions between the surfactant tails and the hydrophobic regions on the polymer chains. Our experiments showed clearly that the presence of opposite charges is not a necessary condition for boosting the foaminess and foam stability in the surfactant-polymer mixtures studied. Clear foam boosting (synergistic) effects were observed in the mixtures of cationic surfactant and cationic polymer, cationic surfactant and nonionic polymer, and anionic surfactant and nonionic polymer. The mixtures of anionic surfactant and cationic polymer showed improved foam stability, however, the foaminess was strongly reduced, as compared to the surfactant solutions without polymer. No significant synergistic or antagonistic effects were observed for the mixture of nonionic surfactant (with low critical micelle concentration) and nonionic polymer. The results from the model experiments allowed us to explain the observed trends by the different adsorption dynamics and complex formation pattern in the systems studied.
