Ionic liquids in microemulsions: Formulation and characterization

Stable diesel microemulsion using diammonium ionic liquids and their effects on fuel properties, particle size characteristics and combustion calculations

Ecofriendly and stable Fuel Microemulsions based on renewable components were prepared through solubilizing ethanol in diesel and waste cooking oil blend (4:1). New diquaternary ammonium ionic liquids (3a & 3b) were synthesized through a quaternization reaction of the synthesized dihaloester with diethyl ethanolamine tridecantrioate and triethyl amine tridecantrioate, respectively. The chemical structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy. It was observed from DLS analyses that the ethanol particles in all samples have sizes between 4.77 to 11.22 nm. The distribution becomes narrower with the decrease in the ionic liquid concentrations. The fuel properties fall within the ASTM D975 acceptable specifications and are close to the neat diesel properties. The Cetane index were 53 and 53.5, heating values were 38.5 and 38.5 MJ/kg, viscosities were 2.91 and 2.98 mm2/s, densities were 8.26 and 8.29 g/mL and flash points were 49 °C and 48 °C for 3a1 and 3b1 microemulsions, respectively. The particle sizes of samples were examined by DLS for 160 days and they were significantly stable. The amount of ethanol solubilized increases with the increase in the amount of the synthesized ionic liquids and cosurfactant. The combustion calculations pointed out that the microemulsions 3a1 and 3b1 need 13.07 kg air/kg fuel and 12.79 kg air/kg fuel, respectively, which are less than the air required to combust the pure diesel. According to theoretical combustion, using ionic liquids saves the air consumption required for combustion and reduces the quantities of combustion products. The prepared microemulsions were successfully used as a diesel substitute due to their improved combustion properties than pure diesel and low pollution levels.

Do Ionic Liquids Exhibit the Required Characteristics to Dissolve, Extract, Stabilize, and Purify Proteins? Past-Present-Future Assessment

Proteins are highly labile molecules, thus requiring the presence of appropriate solvents and excipients in their liquid milieu to keep their stability and biological activity. In this field, ionic liquids (ILs) have gained momentum in the past years, with a relevant number of works reporting their successful use to dissolve, stabilize, extract, and purify proteins. Different approaches in protein-IL systems have been reported, namely, proteins dissolved in (i) neat ILs, (ii) ILs as co-solvents, (iii) ILs as adjuvants, (iv) ILs as surfactants, (v) ILs as phase-forming components of aqueous biphasic systems, and (vi) IL-polymer-protein/peptide conjugates. Herein, we critically analyze the works published to date and provide a comprehensive understanding of the IL-protein interactions affecting the stability, conformational alteration, unfolding, misfolding, and refolding of proteins while providing directions for future studies in view of imminent applications. Overall, it has been found that the stability or purification of proteins by ILs is bispecific and depends on the structure of both the IL and the protein. The most promising IL-protein systems are identified, which is valuable when foreseeing market applications of ILs, e.g., in "protein packaging" and "detergent applications". Future directions and other possibilities of IL-protein systems in light-harvesting and biotechnology/biomedical applications are discussed.

Dielectric Depiction of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Tetrafluoroborate/1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium 1,4-Bis(2-ethylhexyl) Sulfosuccinate/Benzene Microemulsions: Percolation, Interface Polarization, and Electrical Parameters

Two dielectric relaxations located at approximately 10 and 300 MHz were analyzed in the microemulsion composed of the polar ionic liquid (PIL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4]), the surface-active ionic liquid (SAIL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium 1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate ([bmim][AOT]), and benzene. The curve of the dc conductivity vs PIL weight fraction shows two inflection points, namely, 16.69 and 27.90 wt %, which are used to divide the PIL/O, bicontinuous (B.C.), and O/PIL subregions. The critical exponents of percolation u = 0.75, 0.79, and 0.80 are suggested from the scaling dependence of dc conductivity on the PIL weight fraction, together with frequency dependences of both permittivity and loss angle, which all infer that static percolation occurs in the microemulsion. Only one dielectric relaxation at high frequency was observed in the PIL/O subregion, when the concentration increased to the boundary between the PIL/O and B.C. subregions; the second dielectric relaxation appeared at low frequency. The high-frequency relaxation is caused by interfacial polarization. The low-frequency relaxation is attributed to the dipole-oriented polarization of AOT-. When the oil content of the system was reduced, the interface became softer to allow more AOT- to rotate, and the cation shifted from moving around its long axis to rotating along its short axis. The static dielectric constant of [bmim][AOT] was given. The dielectric constants and conductivity of the dispersed and continuous phases in the PIL/O and O/PIL subregions were calculated from the dielectric parameters of high-frequency relaxation.

Recent Developments on Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents for Drug Delivery Applications

The field of Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is continuously expanding due to their exceptional unique properties and highly tunable nature, which finds applications in broad areas of modern science. Considering numerous possible IL and DES combinations prepared with active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), they find applications in pharmaceutical sciences. They can also serve as potential components of drug formulations and hence they have drawn the attention of formulation scientists. Herein, the concept of pharmaceutical ILs and DESs are discussed briefly. The possible applications of these solvent systems for slow drug delivery including nanoscale drug delivery are discussed citing various examples from the published literature. Although the ILs and DESs are found to be suitable for various drug delivery applications but still none of the slow drug delivery vehicles based on these solvents is in practical use. The data relating to long-term toxicity upon administration in the human body followed by various safety evaluations, clinical trials, etc. are pending for such new drug delivery systems. However, proof of concept studies done on the retention of biological activities in the ionic form is quite encouraging and such studies indicate the possibility of application of such new systems in the development of biomedical research and related industries in near future.

Ionic Liquids for Enhanced Drug Delivery: Recent Progress and Prevailing Challenges

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of nonmolecular compounds composed only of ions. Compared with traditional organic solvents, ILs have the advantages of wide chemical space, diverse and flexible structures, negligible vapor pressure, and high thermal stability, which make them widely used in many fields of modern science, such as chemical synthesis and catalytic decomposition, electrochemistry, biomass conversion, and biotransformation biotechnology. Because of their special characteristics, ILs have been favored in the pharmaceutical field recently, especially for the development of efficient drug delivery systems. So far, ILs have been successfully designed to promote the dissolution of poorly soluble drugs and the destruction of physiological barriers, such as the tight junction between the stratum corneum and the intestinal epithelium. In addition, ILs can also be combined with other drug strategies to stabilize the structure of small molecules. This Review mainly introduces the application of ILs in drug delivery, emphasizes the potential mechanism of ILs, and presents the key research directions of ILs in the future.

Phase studies of ethyl ammonium nitrate (EAN)/sugar surfactant microemulsions: effect of chain length of alkanes and length of the hydrophobic chain of the non-ionic surfactant

Microemulsions were formulated with the ionic liquid ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) used instead of water as the polar phase, hydrocarbon solvents (n-alkanes) and sugar-based non-ionic surfactants, and their phase behaviour and microstructure were investigated. The sugar-based non-ionic surfactants used are non-toxic, biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Due to these properties, their use in microemulsion systems is a clear alternative to the conventionally used non-ionic surfactants from the class of alkyl polyoxyethylene ethers (C i E j ). The influence of n-alkanes with different chain lengths and of sugar-based nonionic surfactants with hydrophobic chains of different lengths on the microemulsion system was also investigated. The results obtained for the microemulsions with EAN described here are similar to those obtained for microemulsion systems formulated with water as the polar solvent. Liquid crystalline (LC) phases were observed in microemulsion systems with sugar-based nonionic surfactants having longer hydrocarbon chains, at lower temperatures and higher surfactant mass fraction.

Review on Amphiphilic Ionic Liquids as New Surfactants: From Fundamentals to Applications

The demand for lowering interfacial tension (IFT) in different processes has persuaded researchers to use stable and resistant surfactants with low environmental impact. For this purpose, surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) have attracted much attention owing to their good amphiphilic nature and prominent properties like recyclability and high performance under harsh conditions. This review initially explains how the IFT and critical micelle concentration of different systems vary in the presence of different SAILs with a variety of alkyl chain lengths, head groups, and counter anions. Towards this aim, some physicochemical properties of SAILs as well as the corresponding theoretical aspects of adsorption are considered. Then, recent advances in utilizing SAILs for reducing IFT of different chemical systems are surveyed. Relevantly, the role of important operating parameters of temperature, pH, presence of electrolytes, and the chemical nature of involved phases are adequately discussed. Further, an overview of different SAILs applications in stabilization, separation, and in petroleum industries is scrutinized. To allow better judgment, precise comparisons between different types of SAILs and conventional surfactants are provided. Finally, challenges and possible directions of future research on SAILs are highlighted.

Development of Licorice Flavonoids Loaded Microemulsion for Transdermal Delivery Using CCD-Optimal Experimental Approach: Formulation Development and Characterization

In this research, we sought to surmount the poor dissolvability and transdermal absorption rate of licorice flavonoids (LFs) by fabricating a LFs microemulsion. LFs content was determined using high performance liquid chromatography. Initial studies such as dissolution testing, emulsification testing, and pseudo ternary phase diagram generation were implemented for screening components and optimized adopting the central composite design. While the tested responses were solubility, droplet size and PDI, thirteen trials were performed using two different variables, oil percentage and optimized emulsifier and co-emulsifier ratio. Microemulsions were then characterized for droplet size, PDI, transmission electron microscopy, viscosity, electrical conductivity, pH, entrapment efficiency, drug content and stability. Additionally, skin release profile, percutaneous absorption and retention were investigated adopting Franz diffusion cell. The optimal formulation was found to compose of laureth-9 (emulsifier, 6.72 g), propylene glycol (co-emulsifier, 1.80 g), isopropyl myristate (IPM, oil, 1.48 g), LFs (1.50 g) and at least more than 85% deionized water. The optimized and storage for 3 months of microemulsion was found to clear, light yellow color without phase separation or precipitation indicated the stability of the preparation to long-term placement. The mean droplet size, PDI, entrapment efficiency and drug content were discovered as 12.68 ± 0.12 nm, 0.049 ± 0.005, 97.28 ± 0.13% and 122.67 ± 0.40 mg·g−1, respectively. Furthermore, the optimal formulation sustained release LFs, remarkably deliver more LFs through the skin layer (644.95 ± 6.73 μg cm−2) and significantly retained LFs in the skin layer (9.98 μg cm−2). The study concluded that optimized microemulsion has potential and enhanced the dissolvability and cumulative penetration amount of LFs.

Advances Brought by Hydrophilic Ionic Liquids in Fields Involving Pharmaceuticals

The negligible volatility and high tunable nature of ionic liquids (ILs) have been the main drivers of their investigation in a wide diversity of fields, among which is their application in areas involving pharmaceuticals. Although most literature dealing with ILs is still majorly devoted to hydrophobic ILs, evidence on the potential of hydrophilic ILs have been increasingly provided in the past decade, viz., ILs with improved therapeutic efficiency and bioavailability, ILs with the ability to increase drugs' aqueous solubility, ILs with enhanced extraction performance for pharmaceuticals when employed in biphasic systems and other techniques, and ILs displaying low eco/cyto/toxicity and beneficial biological activities. Given their relevance, it is here overviewed the applications of hydrophilic ILs in fields involving pharmaceuticals, particularly focusing on achievements and advances witnessed during the last decade. The application of hydrophilic ILs within fields involving pharmaceuticals is here critically discussed according to four categories: (i) to improve pharmaceuticals solubility, envisioning improved bioavailability; (ii) as IL-based drug delivery systems; (iii) as pretreatment techniques to improve analytical methods performance dealing with pharmaceuticals, and (iv) in the recovery and purification of pharmaceuticals using IL-based systems. Key factors in the selection of appropriate ILs are identified. Insights and perspectives to bring renewed and effective solutions involving ILs able to compete with current commercial technologies are finally provided.

Surfing the Third Wave of Ionic Liquids: A Brief Review on the Role of Surface-Active Ionic Liquids in Drug Development and Delivery

The relevance of ionic liquids (ILs) is now well established in many fields, as their unique properties make them appealing as 1) greener alternatives to organic solvents (first-generation ILs), 2) tunable task-specific materials (second-generation ILs), and 3) multifunctional players in life and pharmaceutical sciences (third-generation ILs). This third wave of ILs encompasses a wide range of compounds, from bioactive molecules with single or even dual therapeutic action, to potential ingredient molecules for drug formulation and transport systems. In this context, the focus of this review is the emergent role of surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) in drug development and delivery.

Using Microemulsions: Formulation Based on Knowledge of Their Mesostructure

Microemulsions, as thermodynamically stable mixtures of oil, water, and surfactant, are known and have been studied for more than 70 years. However, even today there are still quite a number of unclear aspects, and more recent research work has modified and extended our picture. This review gives a short overview of how the understanding of microemulsions has developed, the current view on their properties and structural features, and in particular, how they are related to applications. We also discuss more recent developments regarding nonclassical microemulsions such as surfactant-free (ultraflexible) microemulsions or ones containing uncommon solvents or amphiphiles (like antagonistic salts). These new findings challenge to some extent our previous understanding of microemulsions, which therefore has to be extended to look at the different types of microemulsions in a unified way. In particular, the flexibility of the amphiphilic film is the key property to classify different microemulsion types and their properties in this review. Such a classification of microemulsions requires a thorough determination of their structural properties, and therefore, the experimental methods to determine microemulsion structure and dynamics are reviewed briefly, with a particular emphasis on recent developments in the field of direct imaging by means of electron microscopy. Based on this classification of microemulsions, we then discuss their applications, where the application demands have to be met by the properties of the microemulsion, which in turn are controlled by the flexibility of their amphiphilic interface. Another frequently important aspect for applications is the control of the rheological properties. Normally, microemulsions are low viscous and therefore enhancing viscosity has to be achieved by either having high concentrations (often not wished for) or additives, which do not significantly interfere with the microemulsion. Accordingly, this review gives a comprehensive account of the properties of microemulsions, including most recent developments and bringing them together from a united viewpoint, with an emphasis on how this affects the way of formulating microemulsions for a given application with desired properties.

Fabrication of a GUMBOS-based acid-base indicator: smart probe for sensing acids and bases in any solvent

This report outlines the synthesis of an ionic liquid-based pH-responsive indicator to sense acids or bases in non-polar as well as polar solvents. Herein, we have assembled a new ionic liquid (IL) comprised of a group of uniform materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS) by attaching a quaternary phosphonium ionic liquid with a very common acid-base indicator, methyl orange, via simple ion-exchange reaction. This integrated IL-based indicator is highly soluble in less polar solvents and exhibits good sensitivity toward the presence of acids/bases in those media. Furthermore, this indicator has been exploited in determining the dissociation constants of several acids in non-aqueous aprotic solvents by overlapping indicator method and hence this report provides essential information toward the understanding of many fundamental chemical reactions. This report has further scope for the synthesis of novel aqueous suspended nanomaterials, i.e., the nanoparticles derived from GUMBOS (nanoGUMBOS) by a simple flash nano-precipitation method. The nanomaterial has been well characterized by different spectroscopic and microscopic studies. The obtained nanoparticles also exhibit substantial pH-responsive behaviors in aqueous medium and show better susceptibility as compared to the free organic indicator. Thus, this report explores detailed studies on the IL-based indicator in sensing the acidity/basicity of various media.

Ionic Liquids for Topical Delivery in Cancer

The unique properties of ionic liquids make them quite appealing for diverse applications, from “green” solvents (1st generation ionic liquids) to finely tuned materials (2nd generation ionic liquids). A decade ago, a 3rd generation of ionic liquids emerged which is focused on their prospective clinical applications, either as drugs per se or as adjuvants in drug formulations. In recent years, research focused on the use of ionic liquids for topical drug delivery has been increasing and holds great promise towards clinical application against skin cancers. This article highlights the growing relevance of ionic liquids in medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical technology, which is opening new windows of opportunity.

Ionic liquid-based transdermal delivery of propranolol: a patent evaluation of US2018/0169033A1

Ionic liquids (ILs) are organic salts of asymmetric organic cations and inorganic/organic anions and are considered green alternative to organic solvents. ILs have high thermal stability, low volatility, low toxicity and high biodegradability. ILs are frequently used for enhancing the solubility and stability of active pharmaceutical ingredients. This study describes an invention related to the preparation of amorphous melts of propranolol incorporated into transdermal patches for infantile hemangioma intervention. Reduction in skin irritation and a significant increase in transdermal permeability of propranolol from its amorphous melts was reported. However, toxicity and stability issues of the IL-based active pharmaceutical ingredients and their drug delivery systems are yet to be established from regulatory perspective before exploiting commercial viability of these forms.

Molecular-Level Insights into the Microstructure of a Hydrated and Nanoconfined Deep Eutectic Solvent

Despite the recent advancements in the field of deep eutectic solvents (DESs), their high viscosity often prevents practical applications. A versatile strategy to overcome this problem is either to add a co-solvent or to confine the DES inside a nanoscaled self-organized system. This work assesses the microstructures of a hydrated and nanoconfined DES comprising benzyltripropylammonium chloride [BTPA]Cl and ethylene glycol (EG). They act as a hydrogen-bond acceptor and a donor, respectively. The hydrogen bonding between [BTPA]Cl and EG in the DES (i.e., BTEG) and the molecular states of water in the hydrated BTEG were studied by Raman spectroscopy. The results show different hydrogen-bonding associations between water-water and water-BTEG or EG molecules. In addition, we investigated the confinement effects of BTEG in a Polysorbate 80 (Tween-80)/cyclohexane reverse micellar (RM) system. The results are compared with those of an ionic liquid-encapsulated RM system. The formation, bonding characteristics, and thermal stability of the RM droplets were studied by solubilization, dynamic light scattering, rheology, and Raman spectroscopy experiments. Furthermore, it is shown that hydrogen bonding between the DES and the surfactant leads to a stable RM system. Interestingly, the viscosity of the RM system is significantly lower than that of the neat DES suggesting that DESs have a much wider practical applicability in the form of RMs.

Supramolecular Chemistry and Self-Organization: A Veritable Playground for Catalysis

The directed assembly of molecular building blocks into discrete supermolecules or extended supramolecular networks through noncovalent intermolecular interactions is an ongoing challenge in chemistry. This challenge may be overcome by establishing a hierarchy of intermolecular interactions that, in turn, may facilitate the edification of supramolecular assemblies. As noncovalent interactions can be used to accelerate the reaction rates and/or to increase their selectivity, the development of efficient and practical catalytic systems, using supramolecular chemistry, has been achieved during the last few decades. However, between discrete and extended supramolecular assemblies, the newly developed “colloidal tectonics” concept allows us to link the molecular and macroscopic scales through the structured engineering of colloidal structures that can be applied to the design of predictable, versatile, and switchable catalytic systems. The main cutting-edge strategies involving supramolecular chemistry and self-organization in catalysis will be discussed and compared in this review.

Nanoemulsions with All Ionic Liquid Components as Recyclable Nanoreactors

Nanoemulsions (NEs) comprising ionic liquids (ILs); ethanolammonium formate (HO-EOAF), proliniumisopropylester dioctylsulfosuccinate ([ProC₃][AOT]), and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, ([Bmim][NTf₂]) as insoluble hydrophilic, surface active, and hydrophobic components have been constructed. This novel class of colloidal formulations exhibited several contrasting properties vis-à-vis conventional water-in-oil or water-in-ionic liquid or nonaqueous NEs such as (i) spontaneous formation, (ii) thermodynamic stability and isotropic nature, (iii) decrease of droplet size with increase in polar medium concentration, and (iv) high thermal and kinetic stability. Mechanisms and characteristics for such anomalies have been investigated by physical, spectroscopic, and imaging techniques. NEs have been demonstrated as versatile recyclable nanoreactors for user-friendly synthesis of materials such as metal-organic frameworks/light harvesting hybrid systems. We anticipate that this development will lead to the construction of several other need-based "all ionic-liquid nanoemulsions" in view of the flexibility provided by the tailoring nature of ILs.

Surfactant-Free Microemulsions of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Hexafluorophosphate, Diethylammonium Formate, and Water

Surfactant-free microemulsions (SFMEs) are a unique kind of microemulsion, which form from immiscible fluids (i.e., oil and water phases) in the presence of amphi-solvents rather than traditional surfactants. In comparison with traditional surfactant-based microemulsions (SBMEs), SFMEs have received much less attention, and the current understanding of the unique system is very limited. Herein, we report a SFME consisting of the hydrophobic ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF₆), the protic IL diethylammonium formate (DEAF), and water, in which the bmimPF₆ and DEAF are used as the oil phase and amphi-solvent, respectively. Three kinds of microstructures, namely, water-in-bmimPF₆ (W/IL), bicontinuous (BC), and bmimPF₆-in-water (IL/W), are identified for the SFME, using cyclic voltammetry, cryo-TEM, and DLS techniques. Especially, the volumetric and surface free energy properties of the SFME are investigated by excess molar volume ( V_m^E) and surface tension (γ) measurements, and they are found to be similar to those of SBMEs. Discontinuous changes in V_m^E and γ with the system compositions are observed as the system microstructures change, which can be used to identify the structural transition of SFMEs. We think this study provides a better understanding of SFME features.

Ionic liquid-induced aggregate formation and their applications

In the last two decades, researchers have extensively studied highly stable and ordered supramolecular assembly formation using oppositely charged surfactants. Thereafter, surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs), a special class of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), replace the surfactants to form various supramolecular aggregates. Therefore, in the last decade, the building blocks of the supramolecular aggregates (micelle, mixed micelle, and vesicular assemblies) have changed from oppositely charged surfactant/surfactant pair to surfactant/SAIL and SAIL/SAIL pair. It is also found that various biomolecules can also interact with SAILs to construct biologically important supramolecular assemblies. The very latest addition to this combination of ion pairs is the dye molecules having a long hydrophobic chain part along with a hydrophilic ionic head group. Thus, dye/surfactant or dye/SAIL pair also produces different assemblies through electrostatic, hydrophobic, and π-π stacking interactions. Vesicles are one of the important self-assemblies which mimic cellular membranes, and thus have biological application as a drug carrier. Moreover, vesicles can act as a suitable microreactor for nanoparticle synthesis.

Nanoreactors stable up to 200 °C: a class of high temperature microemulsions composed solely of ionic liquids

A class of microemulsions solely consisting of ionic liquids was shown to maintain nanoscale droplets up to about 200 °C, and this unique property was used to prepare porous Pt where the microemulsions played the roles of a solvent, a template and a reductant.

Surfactant-free microemulsions of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, propylamine nitrate, and water

Generally, surfactants (or amphiphiles) are believed to be necessary components of microemulsions. However, it has been demonstrated that, in the absence of traditional surfactants, microemulsions can also form from a ternary system of two immiscible fluids (i.e., oil and water phases) and an amphi-solvent, but the current understanding of such surfactant-free microemulsions (SFMEs) is very limited. Herein, we report an SFME consisting of the hydrophobic ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF₆), the protic IL propylamine nitrate (PAN), and water, in which bmimPF₆ and PAN are used as the oil phase and the amphi-solvent, respectively. The microstructures and structural transitions of the SFME were investigated using cyclic voltammetry, fluorescence spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The SFME exhibited water-in-bmimPF₆ (W/IL), bicontinuous (BC), and bmimPF₆-in-water (IL/W) microstructures, depending on the composition of the ternary system, similar to the case of traditional surfactant-based microemulsions (SBMEs). The three kinds of microstructures were confirmed by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) observations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on SFMEs composed of two ILs as components, especially where one is used as the amphi-solvent.

Biological Activity of Ionic Liquids and Their Application in Pharmaceutics and Medicine

Ionic liquids are remarkable chemical compounds, which find applications in many areas of modern science. Because of their highly tunable nature and exceptional properties, ionic liquids have become essential players in the fields of synthesis and catalysis, extraction, electrochemistry, analytics, biotechnology, etc. Apart from physical and chemical features of ionic liquids, their high biological activity has been attracting significant attention from biochemists, ecologists, and medical scientists. This Review is dedicated to biological activities of ionic liquids, with a special emphasis on their potential employment in pharmaceutics and medicine. The accumulated data on the biological activity of ionic liquids, including their antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties, are discussed in view of possible applications in drug synthesis and drug delivery systems. Dedicated attention is given to a novel active pharmaceutical ingredient-ionic liquid (API-IL) concept, which suggests using traditional drugs in the form of ionic liquid species. The main aim of this Review is to attract a broad audience of chemical, biological, and medical scientists to study advantages of ionic liquid pharmaceutics. Overall, the discussed data highlight the importance of the research direction defined as "Ioliomics", studies of ions in liquids in modern chemistry, biology, and medicine.

Solvation, rotational relaxation and fluorescence correlation spectroscopic study on ionic liquid-in-oil microemulsions containing triple-chain surface active ionic liquids (SAILs)

In this article, solvation dynamics and rotational relaxation approaches have been applied to explore the microheterogeneity of surface active ionic liquid (SAIL) containing microemulsions, i.e. [P₁₃][Tf₂N] or [N₃₁₁₁][Tf₂N]/[BHD][AOT]/[IPM].
