Turbidity and 1H NMR analysis of the solubilization of tributylphosphate in aqueous solutions of an amphiphilic triblock copolymer (L64 pluronic)

TBP induced double cloud point in aqueous EO13PO30EO13 solutions: investigating the evolution of associated micellar characteristics as a function of temperature

TBP solubilized Pluronic L64 solutions exhibit inter-micellar attraction driven micellar cluster formation upon cooling, which is unique in non-ionic micellar systems.

MESOSCOPIC SIMULATION ON THE PHASE STRUCTURE OF PLURONIC P105 AQUEOUS SOLUTION

The mesoscopic dynamic simulation (MesoDyn) has been carried out to investigate the phase structure and the aggregate properties of triblock copolymers (ethylene oxide)37 (propylene oxide)56 (ethylene oxide)37 (P105) in aqueous solution. A Gaussian chain model is successfully built according to the equivalent chain method and the Flory–Huggins interaction parameters, χ, used for determining the repulsions between different chain segments are computed. Simulation results show that P105 can form several microstructures including spherical micelles, ellipsoid micellar cluster, worm-like micelles, defective bicontinuous phase, and bicontinuous phase with increasing concentration. A special transition phase structure of P105 is found in the spherical micellar region. The dynamic evolution processes of spherical micelles are investigated by observing the induction time before phase separation and the changing of isosurface during phase separation. The influence of P105 concentration on the density of micelles at equilibrium state is also discussed, which shows that the increase of P105 concentration will lead to the decrease of micelles' amount. Two kinds of growth mechanisms during phase separation are discussed by MesoDyn simulation.

Characterization of polysulfone and polysulfone/vanillin microcapsules by 1H NMR spectroscopy, solid-state 13C CP/MAS-NMR spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption-desorption analyses

Textile detergent and softener industries have incorporated perfume microencapsulation technology to improve their products. Perfume encapsulation allows perfume protection until use and provides a long-lasting fragrance release. But, certain industrial microcapsules show low encapsulation capacity and low material stability. Polysulfone capsules have been already proposed to solve these drawbacks. Among them, PSf/Vanillin capsules were considered as a desirable system. They present both good material stability and high encapsulation capacity. However, several factors such as the final location of the perfume in the polymeric matrix, the aggregation state that it has in the capsule and its interaction with the capsule components have not been studied yet. These factors can provide vast information about the capsule performance and its improvement. With the aim to characterize these parameters, the physical and chemical properties of PSf/Vanillin capsules have been investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and N(2) adsorption-desorption measurements. AFM micrograph and N(2) isotherms confirm that the presence of vanillin modify the physical structure of PSf/Vanillin microcapsules as it is trapped in the capsule porosity. NMR results show that vanillin is present in solid state in PSf/Vanillin microcapsules.

Small-angle neutron scattering study of solubilization of tributyl phosphate in aqueous solutions of L64 Pluronic triblock copolymers

We have studied the solubilization behavior of tributylphosphate (TBP) in aqueous solutions of L64-Pluronics, using light and small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Varying the temperature and the oil content, the system presents a nontrivial phase behavior. In particular, at 308 K, a first solubilization followed by an emulsification failure and a resolubilization is found. We have measured the microstructure by SANS and characterized the microemulsion droplet core size, corona thickness, polydispersity, and interactions. It is shown that at low oil content, the system is made of small swollen micelles. After the phase separation, the resolubilization is carried by larger oil droplets decorated by copolymer. From specific surface measurements at large angles, a surprising change in surfactant conformation is found to accompany this morphological evolution which is also supported by previous results obtained from ¹H NMR experiments. In independent measurements, our structural modeling is confirmed using contrast-variation SANS.

A Calorimetry and Light Scattering Study of the Formation and Shape Transition of Mixed Micelles of EO20PO68EO20 Triblock Copolymer (P123) and Nonionic Surfactant (C12EO6)

The interaction between the nonionic surfactant C12EO6 and the poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer EO20PO68EO20 (P123) has been investigated by means of isothermal titration and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) as well as static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS). P123 self-assembles in water into spherical micelles at ambient temperatures. At raised temperatures, the DSC data revealed a sphere-to-rod transition of the P123 micelles around 60 degrees C. C12EO6 interacts strongly with P123 micelles in aqueous solution to give mixed micelles with a critical micelle concentration (cmc) well below the cmc for pure C12EO6. The presence of C12EO6 also lowers the critical micelle temperature of P123 so aggregation starts at significantly lower temperatures. A new phenomenon was observed in the P123-C12EO6 system, namely, a well-defined sphere-to-rod transition of the mixed micelles. A visual phase study of mixtures containing 1.00 wt % P123 showed that in a narrow concentration range of C12EO6 both the sphere-to-rod transition and the liquid-liquid phase separation temperature are strongly depressed compared to the pure P123-water system. The hydrodynamic radius of spherical mixed micelles at a C12EO6/P123 molar ratio of 2.2 was estimated from DLS to be 9.1 nm, whereas it is 24.1 nm for the rodlike micelles. Furthermore, the hydrodynamic length of the rods at a molar ratio of 2.2 is in the range of 100 nm. The retarded kinetics of the shape transition was detected in titration calorimetric experiments at 40 degrees C and further studied by using time-resolved DLS and SLS. The rate of growth, which was slow (>2000 s), was found to increase with the total concentration.

Micellar solubilization of tributylphosphate in aqueous solutions of Pluronic block copolymers

The solubilization of tributylphosphate (TBP), a polar oil, in various micellar solutions of Pluronic has been investigated by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Partial phase diagrams of the three components systems (Pluronic-TBP-water) have shown two characteristic temperatures, called CPT and SMT, which control the phase behavior (see Part I); Both temperature depend on the copolymer structure and, interestingly, are directly related to the TBP concentration in the medium. Monophasic microemulsions are observed only when the temperature ranges between the SMT and the CPT. Moreover, the evolution of the CPT with the TBP content clearly indicated the occurrence of a structural change of the microemulsions which allows higher quantities of TBP to be solubilized. In this second part, (1)H NMR studies of TPB/micellar systems have essentially focused on elucidating the nature of the interactions between TBP and micelle, or on the location of the solubilized species, mainly from the dependence of chemical shifts or linewidths on TBP concentration. Especially, the NMR spectra of the microemulsions before and after the structural change have been compared with those obtained for pure solution of Pluronic in D(2)O at different temperatures and in CDCl(3). The analysis of the (1)H NMR chemical shifts suggests a structural transformation of the TBP-Pluronic micelles in the sense of an hydrophobic TBP-PPO core becoming more and more dense as the TBP concentration increases. Especially, (1)H NMR data evidence an evolution of the hydration state of the hydrophobic core following addition of TBP in the micellar solutions. During the addition of TBP, the microemulsion structure turns from spherical swelled micelles to nanodroplets of pure TBP stabilized by the Pluronic (pure nanophase of TBP stabilized by the copolymer). It is shown that the structural change strongly depends on the temperatures (CPT and SMT, see Part I) and on the copolymer structure.

Micellar solubilization of tributylphosphate in aqueous solutions of Pluronic block copolymers

Solubilization of tributylphosphate (TBP), a polar oil, in various micellar solutions of Pluronic has been investigated by turbidimetry emphasizing the effect of temperature and the role of the PPO and PEO blocks on the phase behavior of the three components systems (Pluronic-TBP-water). [Temperature-composition] diagrams allow monophasic and diphasic domains to be delimited. Two temperatures are shown to have a determining effect on the phase behavior (TBP solubilization); the well known cloud point temperature (CPT, here defined for the three components system) and the solubilization minimum temperature (SMT) which is defined as the lowest temperature allowing solubilization of TBP in the system. Both temperature depend on the copolymer structure and, interestingly, are directly related to the TBP concentration in the medium. Monophasic microemulsions are observed when the temperature ranges between the SMT and the CPT. When T<SMT, the phase separation occurs and is related to the formation of TBP in water emulsion droplets. When T>CPT the system separates in two phase due to the co-precipitation of TBP and Pluronic. Moreover an unexpected evolution of the CPT with the TBP content clearly indicates the occurrence of a structural change of the microemulsions which allows higher quantities of TBP to be solubilized. But the structural change does not allow alone higher quantities of TBP to be solubilized. A well compromise between the SMT and the CPT must be also observed so as to obtain a large extent of monophasic domain after the restructuration. The best compromise is obtained with Pluronics with intermediate hydrophobic character. Reversely, hydrophobic and hydrophilic Pluronics exhibit a very small extent of monophasic domain after the restructuration which does not allow benefit by the structural change.
