Investigation of formation of silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles via sol–gel approach

Magnetic materials as adsorbents for the pre-concentration and separation of active ingredients from herbal medicine

Herbal medicine (HM) is crucial in disease management and contains complex compounds with few active pharmacological ingredients, presenting challenges in quality control of raw materials and formulations. Effective separation, identification, and analysis of active components are vital for HM efficacy. Traditional methods like liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction are time-consuming and environmentally concerning, with limitations such as sorbent issues, pressure, and clogging. Magnetic solid-phase extraction uses magnetic sorbents for targeted analyte separation and enrichment, offering rapid, pressure-free separation. However, inorganic magnetic particles' aggregation and oxidation, as well as lack of selectivity, have led to the use of various coatings and modifications to enhance specificity and selectivity for complex herbal samples. This review delves into magnetic composites in HM pretreatment, specifically focusing on encapsulated or modified magnetic nanoparticles and materials like silica, ionic liquids, graphene family derivatives, carbon nanotubes, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and molecularly imprinted polymers.

An ultra-sensitive SARS-CoV-2 antigen optical biosensor based on angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) functionalized magnetic-fluorescent silica nanoparticles

This work reports on the design and synthesis of an angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) functionalized magnetic fluorescent silica nanoparticles (Fe-FSNP) as a biosensing platform to detect severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antigen. Iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were synthesized via ultrasonic-assisted coprecipitation and then coated with fluorescent silica nanoparticles (FSNP) through thesol-gelmethod forming the Fe-FSNP samples. Silica obtained from local geothermal powerplant was used in this work and Rhodamine B was chosen as the incorporated fluorescent dye, hence this reports for the first time ACE-2 was immobilized on the natural silica surface. The Fe-FSNP nanoparticle consists of a 18-25 nm magnetic core and a silica shell with a thickness of 30 nm as confirmed from the transmission electron microscopy image. Successful surface functionalization of the Fe-FSNP with ACE-2 as bioreceptor was conducted through hydrosylilation reaction and confirmed through the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The detection of SARS-Cov-2 antigen by Fe-FSNP/ACE2 was measured through the change in its maximum fluorescence intensity at 588 nm where fluorescence- quenching had occurred. The biosensing platform showed a rapid response at 30 min with a linear range of 10-6to 10-2μg ml-1. The magnetic-fluorescent properties of the nanoparticle enables an ultra-sensitive detection of SARS-Cov-2 antigen with the limit of detection as low as 2 fg ml-1.

Sodium alginate-modified alkali-activated eggshell/Fe3O4 nanoparticles: A magnetic bio-based spherical adsorbent for cationic dyes adsorption

Herein, a mixture of eggshell (ES) and magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) was alkali-activated using NaOH/Na2SiO3 solution and then, impregnated with sodium alginate (SA) to prepare a magnetic bio-based adsorbent (namely SAAES/SA/MNPs) for the decontamination of water containing basic dyes, in particular, methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV). The physicochemical properties of magnetic spheres of SAAES/SA/MNPs were characterized using XRD, FTIR, FESEM, EDX, elemental mapping, TEM, and zeta potential techniques. Dye adsorption equilibrium was studied experimentally at pH 8.0 and 25-55 °C, and a statistical physics multilayer model was applied to understand the removal mechanism of these dyes including the adsorption orientations on the adsorbent surface. The number of adsorbed dye molecules per functional group (n) of this bio-based adsorbent ranged from 0.70 to 0.91, indicating the presence of vertical and horizontal adsorption orientations for these organic molecules at all tested solution temperatures. The calculated saturation adsorption capacities (Qsat) were 332.57-256.62 mg/g for CV and 304.47-240.62 mg/g for MB, and an exothermic adsorption was observed for both adsorbates. The estimated adsorption energies (∆E) were < 25 kJ/mol, confirming that the SAAES/SA/MNPs-dye interactions were governed by physical forces as electrostatic interactions. This bio-based adsorbent was effectively regenerated using ethanol and it can be reused showing a removal of 71 and 74 % of MB and CV, respectively, after fourth adsorption-desorption cycles. Overall, the results of this article suggest the attractive performance of SAAES/SA/MNPs for removing basic dyes from aqueous solutions, thus highlighting the promising potential of this magnetic bio-based adsorbent for sustainable wastewater treatment at an industrial level.

SPE of gallic acid and ascorbic acid in fruits using polymerized deep eutectic solvent-modified substrate

Aim: Novel substrates were synthesized by porous and nonporous polymerization of deep eutectic solvents on magnetic silica nanoparticles and introduced for dispersive solid-phase extraction of two analytes. Materials & methods: The prepared substrates were characterized, and an extraction procedure was implemented to select the best substrates and eluent. The central composite design acted to optimize the effects of parameters that influenced the extraction efficiencies. Results: For gallic and ascorbic acids, the limits of detection were obtained at 0.136 and 0.165 μM, respectively, with linear ranges of 0.6-125.2 and 0.5-106.8 μM, respectively. Conclusion: The substrate produced good extractions even after being used three-times and was successfully applied for the analysis of real samples.

A fluorescent magnetic core-shell nanosensor for detection of copper ions in natural waters

A nanosensor based on magnetic core-shell nanoparticles functionalized with rhodamine derivative, N-(3-carboxy)acryloyl rhodamine B hydrazide (RhBCARB), using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) as a linker, has been synthesized for detection of Cu(II) ions in water. The magnetic nanoparticle and the modified rhodamine were fully characterized, showing a strong orange emission sensitive to Cu(II) ions. The sensor shows a linear response from 10 to 90 µg L^-1, detection limit of 3 µg L^-1 and no interference of Ni(II), Co(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Hg(II) and Fe(II) ions. The nanosensor performance is similar to those described in the literature, being a viable option for the determination of Cu(II) ions in natural waters. In addition, the magnetic sensor can be easily removed from the reaction medium with the aid of a magnet and its signal recovered in acidic solution, allowing its reuse in subsequent analysis.

Greener design and characterization of biochar/Fe3O4@SiO2-Ag magnetic nanocomposite as efficient catalyst for synthesis of bioactive benzylpyrazolyl coumarin derivatives

The study aimed to develop an efficient catalyst, biochar/Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-Ag magnetic nanocomposite, to synthesize bioactive benzylpyrazolyl coumarin derivatives through a one-pot multicomponent reaction. The catalyst was prepared using Ag nanoparticles synthesized with Lawsonia inermis leaf extract and carbon-based biochar obtained through pyrolysis of Eucalyptus globulus bark. The nanocomposite contained a silica-based interlayer, highly dispersed Ag nanoparticles, and a central magnetite core, which responded well to external fields. The biochar/Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-Ag nanocomposite showed excellent catalytic activity and could be easily recovered using an external magnet and reused five times without significant loss of performance. The resulting products were tested for antimicrobial activity and showed significant activity against various microorganisms.

Iron Oxide@Mesoporous Silica Core-Shell Nanoparticles as Multimodal Platforms for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Magnetic Hyperthermia, Near-Infrared Light Photothermia, and Drug Delivery

The design of core-shell nanocomposites composed of an iron oxide core and a silica shell offers promising applications in the nanomedicine field, especially for developing efficient theranostic systems which may be useful for cancer treatments. This review article addresses the different ways to build iron oxide@silica core-shell nanoparticles and it reviews their properties and developments for hyperthermia therapies (magnetically or light-induced), combined with drug delivery and MRI imaging. It also highlights the various challenges encountered, such as the issues associated with in vivo injection in terms of NP-cell interactions or the control of the heat dissipation from the core of the NP to the external environment at the macro or nanoscale.

A core/shell TiO2 magnetized molecularly imprinted photocatalyst (MMIP@TiO2): synthesis and its photodegradation activity towards sulfasalazine

Although the selectivity of TiO₂ for the degradation of target molecules is not enough, it is a broadly employed photocatalyst for the degradation of many pollutants. Molecularly imprinted compounds owing to their extreme recognition specificity have become increasingly popular for preparing selective photocatalysts. In this work, based on molecularly imprinted magnetized TiO₂ (MMIP@TiO₂), a selective photocatalyst was prepared. Via the co-precipitation method, Fe₃O₄ particles were prepared and coated respectively by SiO₂, vinyl end groups, and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP). The synthesized photocatalyst was characterized by the X-ray diffraction method (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDX), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and photoluminescence analysis (PL). The photocatalyst was then used to degrade the sulfasalazine pharmaceutical pollutant under UV irradiation. An average crystallite size of 9 nm was obtained for the MMIP@TiO₂ sample from the Scherrer formula and 34.5 nm by the Williamson-Hall formula. The results revealed that compared to the non-imprinted counterpart, the molecularly imprinted photocatalyst had significantly higher efficiency and selectivity for the degradation of target molecules. The process was forwarded with 90% efficiency within 10 min. Optimal conditions were 10.0 min irradiation when 25 mL SSZ solution (50 mg/L), 0.07 g/L catalyst dose, and pH 6.0 were applied. The maximum removal efficiency was calculated to be 92%. The external magnetic field quickly removed the photocatalyst from the solution and regenerated it. It was revealed that after each regeneration cycle, the efficiency dropped. Nevertheless, 63% of the preliminary effectiveness remained after four regeneration steps.

MnFe2O4@SiO2@CeO2 core–shell nanostructures for applications in water remediation†

Removal of dye pollutants from wastewater is among the most important emerging needs in environmental science and engineering. The main objective of our work is to develop new magnetic core–shell nanostructures and explore their use for potential removal of pollutants from water using an external magnetic field. Herein, we have prepared magnetic core–shell nanoparticles that demonstrated excellent dye pollutant adsorbent properties. These nanoparticles are composed of a manganese ferrite magnetic core coated with silica, to protect the core and enable further functionalisation, then finally coated with ceria, which is shown to be an effective adsorbent. The magnetic core–shell nanostructures have been synthesized by a modification of solvothermal synthesis. The nanoparticles were fully characterised at each stage of the synthesis by powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These particles were found to be effective in removing methylene blue (MB) dye from water, which was validated by UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. These particles can be quickly removed from solution using a permanent magnet and then can be recycled after being placed in the furnace at 400 °C to burn off any organic residues. The particles were found to retain their ability to adsorb the pollutant after several cycles and TEM images of the particles after several cycles showed no change in the morphology. This research demonstrated the capacity of magnetic core–shell nanostructures to be used for water remediation.

Magnetic core–shell nanoparticles have been synthesised, characterised and used for methylene blue dye removal from water. They can be magnetically extracted and show no reduction in efficiency after several cycles.

Ionic liquid-loaded triazine-based magnetic nanoparticles for promoting multicomponent reaction

A novel hybrid magnetic ionic-liquid as a heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized by hybridization of imidazolium based-ionic liquid onto the nitrogen rich magnetic nanocomposite. The resulting catalyst (n-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-TA-SO₃H IL) has two advantages besides recyclability: (i) high capacity of functional-SO₃H group with imidazolium-IL cation for promoting symmetric and asymmetric Hantzsch reaction and (ii) easy recovery. Caused by the polymeric and magnetic nature of the n-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-TA-SO₃H IL, large quantities of acidic groups were bound to the n-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-TA surface, which reduced the catalyst mass applied to the catalytic reaction. Moreover, superior catalytic performance and outstanding recyclability of n-Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-TA-SO₃H IL in mild condition make this method a green pathway for manufacture of satisfactory chemicals.

Research Progress on Magnetic Catalysts and Its Application in Hydrogen Production Area

The noncontact heating technology of IH targets heat directly where it is needed through the electromagnetic energy adsorption and conversion of magnetic materials. Unlike conventional heating methods, the heat generated by electromagnetic induction of magnetic materials can be applied directly into the reactor without heating the entire device; this new heating method is not only more energy efficient but also safer, cleaner and more sustainable if renewable electricity is adopted; moreover, magnetic catalysts can be recovered and reused by separating chemical reactants and products from the catalyst by the application of a magnetic field, and it can provide the required heat source for the reaction without altering its catalytic properties. Magnetic catalysts with an electric field have been applied to some industrial areas, such as the preparation of new materials, catalytic oxidation reactions, and high-temperature heat absorption reactions. It is a trend that is used in the hydrogen production process, especially the endothermic steam reforming process. Therefore, in this paper, the heat release mechanism, properties, preparation methods and the application of magnetic catalysts were presented. Highlights of the application and performance of magnetic catalysts in the hydrogen production area were also discussed.

Decorated magnetic nanoparticles with polyvinyl alcohol brushes modified with metal chelate affinity groups for purification of proteins

Refining is a serious challenge in the production of recombinant proteins, and this study proposes a new and easy strategy for the synthesis of magnetic affinity nanoparticles. First, the nanoparticles attached to polyvinyl alcohol brushes were synthesized, and then the hydroxyl groups of this polymer were converted to chelate groups. The nanoparticles were examined by (SEM) scanning electron microscopy, (TEM) transmission electron microscopy, (DLS) dynamic light scattering, (FT-IR) Fourier transform infrared, (XRD) X-ray powder diffraction, (VSM) vibrating sample magnetometry, and (TGA) thermal gravimetric analysis. The results confirm that uniform and spherical magnetic polymer nanoparticles with high magnetization and superparamagnetic properties were successfully synthesized. The S100A9 protein, a His-tagged recombinant protein, was expressed and purified using the synthesized nanoparticles. According to the (SDS-PAGE) sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis results, there is a high degree of resolution in protein separation. The synthesized nanoparticles have a high protein binding capacity of about 208 mg of protein per gram of nanoparticles.

Novel ZrO2-glycine nanocomposite as eco-friendly high temperature corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in hydrochloric acid solution

We report the green synthesis of novel ZrO₂-Glycine nanocomposite referred to as ZrO₂-Gly NC followed by its characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, SEM/EDX, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Further, the inhibition effect of the varying concentration of ZrO₂-Gly NC on the corrosion of mild steel (MS) in 1 M HCl was investigated by weight loss and electrochemical measurements at 40-80 °C. The percentage inhibition efficacy of NC increased with the increase of concentration and temperature and reached about 81.01% at 500 ppm at 70 °C which decreased at 80 °C and exhibited 73.5% inhibition efficiencies. According to the polarization measurements, the investigated ZrO₂-Gly NC works as a mixed-type inhibitor with predominantly inhibiting cathodic reaction. Also, the adsorption isotherm analysis indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous and followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Furthermore, the contact angle measurement revealed the water-repelling property of the investigated inhibitor. The surface morphological study via SEM-EDS micrograph affirmed the appearance of a smooth surface in presence of inhibited media suggesting the formation of protective film by the adsorption of ZrO₂-Gly NC on the surface of the MS even at higher temperature.

A Cu(ii) complex supported on Fe3O4@SiO2 as a magnetic heterogeneous catalyst for the reduction of environmental pollutants

Today, the presence of pollutants in the environment has become one of the serious problems and concerns of human beings. To eliminate these pollutants, researchers have made many efforts. One of the most important of these efforts is the reduction of such contaminants in the presence of effective catalysts. Two of the most important and widespread types of these pollutants are nitro compounds and organic dyes. In this paper, we report the synthesis of an efficient and reusable magnetic catalyst using Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ core–shell nanoparticles (NPs), N-(4-bromophenyl)-N′-benzoylthiourea, and copper(ii). Specifically, the Cu(ii)-N-(4-bromophenyl)-N′-benzoylthiourea complex supported on Fe₃O₄-core magnetic NPs (CM)/SiO₂-shell (SS) (CM@SS-BBTU-Cu(ii)) has been prepared. CM@SS-BBTU-Cu(ii) was characterized by FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), HRTEM (high resolution transmission electron microscopy), FFT (fast Fourier transform), VSM (vibrating sample magnetometry), TG-DTA (thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis), STEM (scanning transmission electron microscopy), EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), and elemental mapping. The synthesized CM@SS-BBTU-Cu(ii) was applied for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), Congo red (CR), and methylene blue (MB) in the presence of NaBH₄ (sodium borohydride) at room temperature. CM@SS-BBTU-Cu(ii) can be recycled and reused 5 times. Our results displayed that the performance of the catalyst was not significantly reduced by recycling.

Nitro-aromatic-pollutants are hazardous to people and the environment. In this work, the catalytic potential of CM@SS-BBTU-Cu(ii) has been investigated for reduction of nitro group in aqueous media by NaBH₄.

Green Synthesis of Silver-Decorated Magnetic Particles for Efficient and Reusable Antimicrobial Activity

Metal and metal hybrid nanostructures have shown tremendous application in the biomedical and catalytic fields because of their plasmonic and catalytic properties. Here, a green and clean method was employed for the synthesis of silver nanoparticle (Ag NP)-SiO₂-Fe₂O₃ hybrid microstructures, and biomolecules from green tea extracts were used for constructing the hybrid structures. The SiO₂-Fe₂O₃ structures were synthesized using an ethanolic green tea leaf extract to form Bio-SiO₂-Fe₂O₃ (BSiO₂-Fe₂O₃) structures. Biochemical studies demonstrated the presence of green tea biomolecules in the BSiO₂ layer. Reduction of the silver ions was performed by a BSiO₂ layer to form Ag NPs of 5–10 nm in diameter in and on the BSiO₂-Fe₂O₃ microstructure. The reduction process was observed within 600 s, which is faster than that reported elsewhere. The antimicrobial activity of the Ag-BSiO₂-Fe₂O₃ hybrid structure was demonstrated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and the nanostructures were further visualized using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The magnetic properties of the Ag-BSiO₂-Fe₂O₃ hybrid structure were used for studying reusable antimicrobial activity. Thus, in this study, we provide a novel green route for the construction of a biomolecule-entrapped SiO₂-Fe₂O₃ structure and their use for the ultra-fast formation of Ag NPs to form antimicrobial active multifunctional hybrid structures.

Synthesis of novel adsorbent by incorporation of plant extracts in amino-functionalized silica-coated magnetic nanomaterial for the removal of Zn2+and Cu2+from aqueous solution

Magnetic nanoparticles owing to their superparamagnetic behaviour and specific reactive sites are facilitated to regenerate and reuse. Our present study determines the cointegration of the plant extracts of Cynodon dactylon and Muraya koenigii with the magnetic nanoparticle coated with silica layer and surface engineered with a specific amine group. The cointegrated magnetic nano adsorbent is characterized for its analytical feature and batch studies are performed to remove zinc (Zn²⁺) copper (Cu²⁺) metal ions. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveals the presence of functional entities such as NH₂, Si-O-Si, C=C. The size of the cointegrated nano adsorbent (12-30 nm) was confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy whereas, a high-resolution transmission electron microscope affirms the nanosize of the particle constituted around 20 nm. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis confirms the presence of elements like Fe, N, Si and was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis and vibrating sample magnetometer affirms the superparamagnetic nature with the high magnetic saturation value (M_s - 30 emug^-1). The cointegrated nano adsorbent reveals the maximum adsorption capacity of Zn²⁺ as 78.24 mg.g^-1 and Cu²⁺ as 81.76 mg.g^-1 of the adsorbent under the optimized conditions of contact time 45 min, pH 6.0 and temperature 35 °C. Kinetics such as pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion and isotherm studies like Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin were performed to understand the mechanism of interaction between the nanoadsorbent and metal ions. The reaction system follows the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model for both the Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ metal ions. To determine the reusing capacity of the cointegrated nanoadsorbent, the adsorption efficiency was studied for continuous twelve cycles with 80% recovery after subsequent acid treatment.

Evaluation of column studies using Cynodon dactylon plant-mediated amino-grouped silica-layered magnetic nanoadsorbent to remove noxious hexavalent chromium metal ions

Magnetic nanoparticles are desirable adsorbents because of their unique superparamagnetic nature with the enhanced binding specificity and surface material interaction. The above unique features attract researchers to use it for wider applications. Herein, the study focuses on the amino‐induced silica‐layered magnetic nanoparticles amalgamated with plant‐extracted products of Cynodon dactylon in order to turn them into a potent adsorbing material in a continuous column set up for the elimination of noxiously distributed Cr(VI) ionsin the effluents. The selected plant‐mediated magnetite nanoadsorbent, which was used in the fixed column studies, is optimised with the attributes of inlet concentration, adsorbent bed depth, and flow rate. Thomas, Yoon‐Nelson and bed depth model showed the best experimental fit. Breakthrough adsorption time was reported for the various inlet concentrations of 100, 200 and 300 mg/L, adsorbent bed depths 2, 3 and 4 cm and volumetric flow rates of 4, 5 and 6 mL/min. The breakthrough point evaluated for the optimised attribute of inlet concentration of 100 mg/L, packed adsorbent depth 4 cm and flow rate 4 mL/min was 1400 min and the maximum removal efficiency was 60.6%. A better insight of the adsorption of metal ions for large‐scale industrial effluents is provided.

Templated Mesoporous Silica Outer Shell for Controlled Silver Release of a Magnetically Recoverable and Reusable Nanocomposite for Water Disinfection

In this work, we encapsulated Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Ag (MS-Ag), a bifunctional magnetic silver core-shell structure, with an outer mesoporous silica (mS) shell to form an Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Ag@mSiO₂ (MS-Ag-mS) nanocomposite using a cationic CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) micelle templating strategy. The mS shell acts as protection to slow down the oxidation and detachment of the AgNPs and incorporates channels to control the release of antimicrobial Ag⁺ ions. Results of TEM, STEM, HRSEM, EDS, BET, and FTIR showed the successful formation of the mS shells on MS-Ag aggregates 50-400 nm in size with highly uniform pores ∼4 nm in diameter that were separated by silica walls ∼2 nm thick. Additionally, the mS shell thickness was tuned to demonstrate controlled Ag⁺ release; an increase in shell thickness resulted in an increased path length required for Ag⁺ ions to travel out of the shell, reducing MS-Ag-mS' ability to inhibit E. coli growth as illustrated by the inhibition zone results. Through a shaking test, the MS-Ag-mS nanocomposite was shown to eradicate 99.99+% of a suspension of E. coli at 1 × 10⁶ CFU/mL with a silver release of less than 0.1 ppb, well under the EPA recommendation of 0.1 ppm. This high biocidal efficiency with minimal silver leach is ascribed to the nanocomposite's mS shell surface characteristics, including having hydroxyl groups and possessing a high degree of structural periodicity at the nanoscale or "smoothness" that encourages association with bacteria and retains high Ag⁺ concentration on its surface and in its close proximity. Furthermore, the nanocomposite demonstrated consistent antimicrobial performance and silver release levels over multiple repeated uses (after being recovered magnetically because of the oxidation-resistant silica-coated magnetic Fe₃O₄ core). It also proved effective at killing all microbes from Long Island Sound surface water. The described MS-Ag-mS nanocomposite is highly synergistic, easy to prepare, and readily recoverable and reusable and offers structural tunability affecting the bioavailability of Ag⁺, making it excellent for water disinfection that will find wide applications.

Polymeric magnetic nanoparticles: a multitargeting approach for brain tumour therapy and imaging

The most challenging task in targeting the brain is trespassing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) which restricts the movement of about 98% small molecules. Targeting the central nervous system using magnetic nanoparticles may deliver the drug to the target site along with a contrast imaging property. The use of magnetic nanoparticles can become non-invasive drug targeting and a bio-imaging method for brain cancer. The strategy to apply polymeric nanoparticles as a carrier of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles can be a promising tool as a multitherapeutic drug delivery approach involving delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs with a magnetic targeting approach, imaging, and hyperthermia. This review will highlight the existing difficulties/barriers in crossing the BBB, types of magnetic materials, polymeric carriers for functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles, and targeting strategies as therapeutic and imaging modalities. Utilization of polymeric magnetic nanoparticles as an efficient targeting platform for better drug delivery and imaging for brain cancer and future prospects are also discussed. Polymeric magnetic nanoparticles as a drug delivery and bio-imaging vehicle for brain cancer.

Hydrolytically stable citrate capped Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 MOF: A hetero-structure composite with enhanced activity towards Cr (VI) adsorption and photocatalytic H2 evolution

Design and facile fabrication of a magnetically separable hetero-structure photocatalyst as well as an adsorbent having dual green benefits towards energy conversion and pollutant remediation are quite indispensable in the current scenario. In this regard, a composite of citrate capped Fe₃O₄ and UiO-66-NH₂ has been designed to remediate Cr (VI) by adsorption and harvest photons from visible light for clean energy (H₂) conversion. The material was prepared by the union of citrate capped Fe₃O₄ (CCM) and versatile aqueous stable Zr-based MOF (UiO-66-NH₂) through in-situ solvothermal method. The composite of CCM with MOF (MU-2) was studied through sophisticated analysis techniques; PXRD, FT-IR, BET, UV-Visible DRS, PL, TG, HRTEM and XPS etc. to reveal the inherent characteristics of the material. BET surface analysis revealed high specific surface area (572.13 m² g^-1) of MU-2 in comparison to its pristine MOF. Furthermore, the dual function composite MU-2's VSM studies showed that its magnetic saturation is 3.07 emu g^-1 that is suitable for magnetic separation after desired reaction from aqueous media. The Cr (VI) sorption studies revealed that the composite adsorbent (MU-2) showed maximum monolayer adsorption capacity (Q_m) of 743 mg g^-1 which followed pseudo second order kinetics. Moreover, the sorption thermodynamics revealed that the process was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. In addition to it, the synthesized composite material displayed enhanced activity towards photocatalytic H₂ evolution with a maximum evolution rate of 417 µmole h^-1 with an apparent conversion efficiency (ACE) of 3.12 %. Typically, MU-2 displays high adsorptions of Cr (VI) as well as some extent of Cr (VI) reduction owning to its populous active sites and free carboxylate groups respectively. Moreover, the synergistic effect of CCM and UNH in the composite resulted in Z scheme mediated charge transfer mechanism that showed enhanced H₂ photo-evolution rates. Hence, MU-2 can be readily utilized as magnetically retrievable dual function composite for Cr (VI) adsorption and photocatalytic H₂ evolution.

Improved Solvothermal Synthesis of γ-Fe2O3 Magnetic Nanoparticles for SiO2 Coating

Monodisperse magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (MNPs) were prepared by a simple, improved, one-pot solvothermal synthesis using SDS and PEG 6000 as double capping reagents. This double protecting layer afforded better MNP uniformity (Z average 257 ± 11.12 nm, PDI = 0.18) and colloidal stability. Materials were characterized by DLS, SEM, TEM, XPS, and XRD. The use of these MNPs in the synthesis of core-shell structures with uniform and tunable silica coatings was demonstrated, as silica coated MNPs are important for use in a range of applications, including magnetic separation and catalysis and as platforms for templated nanogel synthesis.

Engineering of magnetic nanoparticles as magnetic particle imaging tracers

Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) has recently emerged as a promising non-invasive imaging technique because of its signal linearly propotional to the tracer mass, ability to generate positive contrast, low tissue background, unlimited tissue penetration depth, and lack of ionizing radiation. The sensitivity and resolution of MPI are highly dependent on the properties of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), and extensive research efforts have been focused on the design and synthesis of tracers. This review examines parameters that dictate the performance of MNPs, including size, shape, composition, surface property, crystallinity, the surrounding environment, and aggregation state to provide guidance for engineering MPI tracers with better performance. Finally, we discuss applications of MPI imaging and its challenges and perspectives in clinical translation.

Various type immobilizations of Isocitrate dehydrogenases enzyme on hyaluronic acid modified magnetic nanoparticles as stable biocatalysts

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were modified by hyaluronic acid (HA). After the process of functionalization, two different strategies have been used to immobilize isocitrate dehydrogenases (IDH) on MNPs. In the first strategy, cross-linked enzyme aggregates were prepared. For this, firstly hyaluronic acid modified magnetic nanoparticles cross-linked enzyme fine aggregates of isocitrate dehydrogenases (IDH/HA/MNPs-CLEAs) were synthesized, and secondly bovine serum albumin (BSA) as co-feeder was used to synthesize the IDH/BSA/HA/MNPs-CLEAs. In the second strategy, the IDH was effectively immobilized on the HA/MNPs surface. The features of MNPs and its derivatives have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and zeta potential measurements. The activity and stability of IDH in IDH/HA/MNPs, IDH/HA/MNPs-CLEAs, and IDH/BSA/HA/MNPs-CLEAs were enhanced. Besides, the enzyme immobilized was readily separated via external magnet from the reaction medium and reused many times. The acquired findings indicate that HA/MNPs are a novel binder/support system to IDH, and IDH immobilized on this system can become a very important biocatalyst working with high accuracy and sensitivity for the determination of magnesium in drinking water and other biological solutions.

Recent advances in the use of magnetite nanoparticles for biomedical applications have led to special attention to these nanoparticles. The unique properties of magnetite nanoparticles such as superparamagnetism, low toxicity, and the ability to bond with biological molecules, are suitable for drug delivery, diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches. The aim of this study was to synthesize magnetite nanoparticles with different biocompatible coatings and investigate their cytotoxicity. Magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation method and the cytotoxicity of these nanoparticles was investigated with Hepatoma G2 cell using the MTT assay. Treated cells, did not showed any evident cell cycle arrest. The Fourier Transmission Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X- ray powder Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) were evaluated. The results of XRD showed the coated magnetite nanoparticles were 10−12 nm and this size also achieved with TEM images. Synthesized magnetite nanoparticles with SiO₂ and oleic acid coatings had lower cytotoxicity than other coatings.

Fabrication of copper(II)-coated magnetic core-shell nanoparticles Fe3O4@SiO2-2-aminobenzohydrazide and investigation of its catalytic application in the synthesis of 1,2,3-triazole compounds

In the present work, an attempt has been made to synthesize the 1,2,3-triazole derivatives resulting from the click reaction, in a mild and green environment using the new copper(II)-coated magnetic core-shell nanoparticles Fe3O4@SiO2 modified by isatoic anhydride. The structure of the catalyst has been determined by XRD, FE-SEM, TGA, VSM, EDS, and FT-IR analyzes. The high efficiency and the ability to be recovered and reused for at least up to 6 consecutive runs are some superior properties of the catalyst.

Magnetic Hyperthermia on γ-Fe2O3@SiO2 Core-Shell Nanoparticles for mi-RNA 122 Detection

Magnetic hyperthermia on core-shell nanoparticles bears promising achievements, especially in biomedical applications. Here, thanks to magnetic hyperthermia, γ-Fe₂O₃ cores are able to release a DNA target mimicking the liver specific oncotarget miRNA-122. Our silica coated magnetic nanoparticles not only allow the grafting at their surface of a significant number of oligonucleotides but are also shown to be as efficient, by local heating, as 95 °C global heating when submitted to an alternative magnetic field, while keeping the solution at 28 °C, crucial for biological media and energy efficiency. Moreover, a slight modification of the silica coating process revealed an increased heating power, well adapted for the release of small oligonucleotides such as microRNA.

Recovery of sperms bearing X chromosomes with different concentrations of magnetic nanoparticles in ram

Pre-conceptual sex selection is still a highly debatable process whereby X and Y chromosome bearing spermatozoa are isolated before oocyte fertilization. Recently, magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) have been used to determine X and Y chromosomes bearing spermatozoa as a result of searching for a cheap, highly efficient method using non-toxic materials. This study aimed to recover the sperm bearing X chromosomes in ram with different concentrations of MNP and then evaluate the success of this method using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Ram sperms were divided into four groups, treated with 0 (control), 50, 100 and 200 μg/ml MNP, respectively. MNP was used to restore sperm cells bearing X chromosomes. Upon recovery, the PCR was performed to identify the X and Y sperms, Methyl ThiazoleTetrazolium (MTT), to assess MNP toxicity and sperm viability and acridine orange (AO) to evaluate sperm DNA integrity. The results of PCR revealed that the treatment of spermatozoa- bearing X chromosomes with 50 μg/ml MNP had the highest effects on the recovery of X sperm rather than the other concentrations of MNP. However, the concentrations of MNP did not have any toxic effects on spermatozoa, sperm viability and, DNA integrity, but the high concentration of MNP (200 μg/ml) significantly reduced DNA integrity. According to MTT and AO results, the concentrations of MNP used in this study had no toxic effects on spermatozoa and did not reduce the sperm viability and DNA integrity, except that 200 μg/ml MNP significantly reduced DNA integrity.

Inorganic nanomaterials for fighting surface and airborne pathogens and viruses

Nowadays, the deadly viruses (including the latest coronavirus) and pathogens transmission became the major concern worldwide. Efforts have been made to combat with these fatal germs transmitted by the airborne, human-to-human contacts and contaminated surfaces. Thus, the antibacterial and antiviral materials have been widely researched. Meanwhile, the development of diverse nanomaterials with the antiviral traits provided several benefits to counter the threats from the surface and airborne viruses especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on these facts, this paper overviewed the advantages of various nanomaterials that can disinfect and deactivate different lethal viruses transmitted through the air and surfaces. The past development, recent progress, future trends, environmental impacts, biocidal effects and prospects of these nanomaterials for the antiviral coating applications have been emphasized.

Reinforcement of Quaternary Ammonium Modified Silica (QAMS) with Magnetite and its Application by Solid Phase Adsorption (SPA) to Adsorb Chromate Ions

Chromium (VI) in the form of chromate anions that have toxic properties needs to be overcome. This study aims to reinforce cationic sorbent quaternary amine-modified silica with magnetite (QAMS-Fe3O4) to adsorb chromate ions. QAMS prepared by reflux methylation ammine modified silica (AMS) obtained from destruction silicate from rice husk ash followed by the addition of 3-APTMS. Characterization QAMS-Fe3O4 by FT-IR showed successfully of methylation process indicated by disappearing absorbance at 1388 cm-1, and emerging absorbance at 2939 cm-1 in QAMS and QAMS-Fe3O4 indicated a transformation of N-H from -NH2 group to [-N+(CH3)3]. XRD analysis denotes 2θ = 30.15°, 35.53°, 43.12°, 57.22°, and 62.90° (JCPDS No. 00-033-0664) fathomed as a characteristic peak of magnetite. SEM-EDX reveals the homogenous topological spherical form with an average particle size 0.006 µm that is dominated by Si element (52.81%) with magnetic moment value = 34.1 emu/g. The stability test shows that this material stable in an acid condition. The adsorption of chromate ions was conducted by the SPA method. Optimal pH obtained by pH range 4-7 with more than 90% adsorbed chromate ions. Variation of increasing series flow rate from 0.05 to 1.5 mL min-1 resulted in decreased adsorbed chromate ions. The use of SPA methods offered simpler and easier handling than the batch method without overriding the adsorption process effectiveness.

Evaluation of the In Vitro Stability of Stimuli-Sensitive Fatty Acid-Based Microparticles for the Treatment of Lung Cancer

The fatty acid-based microparticles containing iron oxide nanoparticles and paclitaxel (PAX) are a viable proposition for the treatment of lung cancer. The microparticles inhaled as a dry powder can be guided to selected locations using an external magnetic field, and when accumulated there, the active compound release can be triggered by local hyperthermia. However, this general strategy requires that the active compound is released from microparticles and can reach the targeted cells before microparticles are removed. Isothermal titration calorimetry was used to demonstrate that the components of microparticles were released and transferred to albumins and lipid bilayers. The morphology of the measured particulates was studied with scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. To determine the cytotoxicity of microparticles, cell culture studies were done. It has been shown that the transfer efficiency depends predominantly on the fatty acid composition of microparticles, which, together with the active ingredient, accumulate predominantly in membrane structures after being released from microparticles and before entering the cytoplasm. The release process is sufficient; hence, paclitaxel-loaded microparticles effectively suppressed the proliferation of A549 human lung epithelial cells of malignant origin (IC₅₀ values for both lauric acid-based and myristic/palmitic-based microparticles containing paclitaxel were below 0.375 μg/mL), while reference microparticles were noncytotoxic.

Core-shell nanostructures: perspectives towards drug delivery applications

Nanosystems have shown encouraging outcomes and substantial progress in the areas of drug delivery and biomedical applications. However, the controlled and targeted delivery of drugs or genes can be limited due to their physicochemical and functional properties. In this regard, core-shell type nanoparticles are promising nanocarrier systems for controlled and targeted drug delivery applications. These functional nanoparticles are emerging as a particular class of nanosystems because of their unique advantages, including high surface area, and easy surface modification and functionalization. Such unique advantages can facilitate the use of core-shell nanoparticles for the selective mingling of two or more different functional properties in a single nanosystem to achieve the desired physicochemical properties that are essential for effective targeted drug delivery. Several types of core-shell nanoparticles, such as metallic, magnetic, silica-based, upconversion, and carbon-based core-shell nanoparticles, have been designed and developed for drug delivery applications. Keeping the scope, demand, and challenges in view, the present review explores state-of-the-art developments and advances in core-shell nanoparticle systems, the desired structure-property relationships, newly generated properties, the effects of parameter control, surface modification, and functionalization, and, last but not least, their promising applications in the fields of drug delivery, biomedical applications, and tissue engineering. This review also supports significant future research for developing multi-core and shell-based functional nanosystems to investigate nano-therapies that are needed for advanced, precise, and personalized healthcare systems.

Integration of Cynodon dactylon and Muraya koenigii plant extracts in amino-functionalised silica-coated magnetic nanoparticle as an effective sorbent for the removal of chromium(VI) metal pollutants

Immobilised magnetic nanoparticles are extensively used owing to their superparamagnetic nature, surface interaction, and binding specificity with the appropriate portentous substances. The present research focuses on the development of a portentous, robust carrier, which integrates the silica-coated amino-functionalised magnetic nanoparticle (AF-MnP) with the plant extracts of Cynodon dactylon (L1) and Muraya koenigii (L2) for the stable and enhanced removal of hazardous hexavalent chromium pollutant in the wastewater. Vibrating sample magnetometer (M_s - 45 emu/g) determines the superparamagnetic properties; Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy determines the presence of functional groups such as NH₂, Si-O-Si, C=C; high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy determine the size of the green adsorbents in the range of 20 nm and the presence of elements such as Fe, N, and Si determines the efficacy of the synthesised silica-coated AF-MnP. The AF-MnP-L1 shows the maximum adsorption capacity of 34.7 mg/g of sorbent calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model and the process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics. After treatment, the adsorbents can be easily separated from the solution in the presence of an external magnetic field and are reused for nine cycles after acid treatment with the minimal loss of adsorption efficiency.

Separation and Determination of Paraquat and Diquat in Human Plasma and Urine by Magnetic Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction Coupled with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

A magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction method coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography was proposed for the simultaneous separation and determination of paraquat (PQ) and diquat (DQ) in human plasma and urine samples. Based on the reduction of PQ and DQ to a blue radical and yellow-green radical by sodium dithionite in an alkaline medium, a fast colorimetric method was also developed for the fast detection of PQ or DQ. In this paper, CoFe₂O₄@SiO₂ magnetic nanoparticles were used as the adsorbent for the magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction of paraquat and diquat, and these two analytes were found to be eluted directly from the adsorbent by NaOH solution. The main factors affecting the extraction efficiency including amount of extractant, extraction time, sample volume, sample solution pH, and elution volume were optimized. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the calibration curve was linear at a concentration range of 28.5-570.2 μg/L, and the correlation coefficient of paraquat and diquat was 0.9986 and 0.9980, respectively. The limits of detection of paraquat and diquat were 4.5 μg/L and 4.3 μg/L. The proposed MSPE-HPLC method was successfully applied to the detection of the paraquat and diquat in human plasma and urine with satisfied recoveries of PQ and DQ in the range of 87.5%-98.7%.

Immobilization of Laccase on Magnetic Chelator Nanoparticles for Apple Juice Clarification in Magnetically Stabilized Fluidized Bed

The juice clarification, one of the key steps in juice processing, suffers from haze formation that results from residual phenolic compounds. In this study, laccase was immobilized on metal-chelated magnetic silica nanoparticles and used for continuous juice clarification in a magnetically stabilized fluidized bed (MSFB) assisted by alternating magnetic field. Furthermore, a new combination of laccase catalysis and microfiltration was developed for the juice clarification. Immobilized laccase provided high relative activity within broader ranges of pH and temperature compared to the free enzyme. Magnetic immobilized laccase exhibited the best reaction rate of 12.1 μmol g^–1 min^–1 for catechol oxidation under the alternating magnetic field of 400 Hz, 60 Gs. No activity loss occurred in immobilized laccase after 20 h continuous operation of juice treatment in MSFB under an alternating magnetic field. Combined with microfiltration after treatment with immobilized laccase, the color of apple juice was decreased by 33.7%, and the light transmittance was enhanced by 20.2%. Furthermore, only 16.3% of phenolic compounds and 15.1% of antioxidant activity was reduced for apple juice after the clarification. By this combination strategy, the apple juice possessed good freeze–thaw and thermal stability.
