Surface free energy evaluation of well-ordered Langmuir–Blodgett surfaces

Using Different Surface Energy Models to Assess the Interactions between Antiviral Coating Films and phi6 Model Virus

High molecular weight chitosan (HMWCh), quaternised cellulose nanofibrils (qCNF), and their mixture showed antiviral potential in liquid phase, while this effect decreased when applied to facial masks, as studied in our recent work. To gain more insight into material antiviral activity, spin-coated thin films were prepared from each suspension (HMWCh, qCNF) and their mixture with a 1:1 ratio. To understand their mechanism of action, the interactions between these model films with various polar and nonpolar liquids and bacteriophage phi6 (in liquid phase) as a viral surrogate were studied. Surface free energy (SFE) estimates were used as a tool to evaluate the potential adhesion of different polar liquid phases to these films by contact angle measurements (CA) using the sessile drop method. The Fowkes, Owens-Wendt-Rabel-Kealble (OWRK), Wu, and van Oss-Chaudhury-Good (vOGC) mathematical models were used to estimate surface free energy and its polar and dispersive contributions, as well as the Lewis acid and Lewis base contributions. In addition, the surface tension SFT of liquids was also determined. The adhesion and cohesion forces in wetting processes were also observed. The estimated SFE of spin-coated films varied between mathematical models (26-31 mJ/m²) depending on the polarity of the solvents tested, but the correlation between models clearly indicated a significant dominance of the dispersion components that hinder wettability. The poor wettability was also supported by the fact that the cohesive forces in the liquid phase were stronger than the adhesion to the contact surface. In addition, the dispersive (hydrophobic) component dominated in the phi6 dispersion, and since this was also the case in the spin-coated films, it can be assumed that weak physical van der Waals forces (dispersion forces) and hydrophobic interactions occurred between phi6 and the polysaccharide films, resulting in the virus not being in sufficient contact with the tested material during antiviral testing of the material to be inactivated by the active coatings of the polysaccharides used. Regarding the contact killing mechanism, this is a disadvantage that can be overcome by changing the previous material surface (activation). In this way, HMWCh, qCNF, and their mixture can attach to the material surface with better adhesion, thickness, and different shape and orientation, resulting in a more dominant polar fraction of SFE and thus enabling the interactions within the polar part of phi6 dispersion.

Atmospheric Corrosion Protection Performance and Mechanism of Superhydrophobic Surface Based on Coalescence-Induced Droplet Self-Jumping Behavior

The coalescence-induced droplet self-jumping behavior on the superhydrophobic surface (SHS) provides a new way to achieve atmospheric corrosion protection. This work controls the droplet self-jumping behavior by regulating the SHS's surface energy and analyzes the relevant mechanism from the energy perspective, revealing the key pathway by which the surface energy impacts the droplet self-jumping behavior. On this basis, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy testing technique is used to evaluate the effect of the droplet self-jumping behavior on the SHS corrosion protection performance, and the SHS atmospheric corrosion protection mechanism based on the coalescence-induced droplet self-jumping behavior is revealed. This study provides theoretical guidance for the development of SHS-based anticorrosion protection.

Sorption of Water/Methanol on Teflon and Hydrocarbon Proton Exchange Membranes

The sorption of water and methanol droplets on Teflon films, as well as on various representative classes of hydrocarbon-based proton exchange membranes (PEMs) was investigated using contact angle measurement (drop shape method) during wetting under ambient open-air conditions. Teflon films exhibited constant hydrophobic surfaces when contacted with water, but a significant sorption of methanol. The PEMs showed slow sorption of water, and a significant sorption of methanol. The differences in sorption of water and methanol on Teflon and PEMs arose from the match/compatibility in the surface free energies as well as polarities between a liquid and a membrane. The significant discrepancies in surface free energies and polarities between water (72.0 mJ m(-2) and 70.1%, respectively) and Teflon film (14.0 mJ m(-2) and 4.9%, respectively) lead to a highly hydrophobic surface and no discernible sorption of water on Teflon films, while the relative similarity or minor discrepancy in surface free energies and polarities between methanol (22.5 mJ m(-2) and 17.0%, respectively) and Teflon film (14.0 mJ m(-2) and 4.9%, respectively) results in a significant sorption of methanol on Teflon. The surface free energies of PEMs were calculated using the harmonic-mean approach, based on contact angle measurements using both water and diiodomethane as probes. The results show that PEMs have initial surface free energies ranging from 44.1 to 54.0 mJ m(-2) along with polarities in the range of 20.8 to 29.1%, for a selection of typical sulfonated polymers. The surface free energies of ionomers were principally contributed to by the nonpolar component, but the presence of polar groups in the polymer increased the polar component, leading to an increase in surface free energy. Of the PEMs investigated, sulfonated poly(aryl ether ether nitrile) has a higher surface energy than those of other ionomers with similar sulfonate contents. The compatibility between water/methanol and PEMs was investigated on the aspect of surface free energies. The present study provides a plausible strategy to prescreen potential PEMs and optimize membrane electrode assembly (MEA) fabrication.

Synthesis and photophysical characteristics of polyfluorene polyrotaxanes

Two alternating polyfluorene polyrotaxanes (3·TM-βCD and 3·TM-γCD) have been synthesized by the coupling of 2,7-dibromofluorene encapsulated into 2,3,6-tri-O-methyl-β- or γ-cyclodextrin (TM-βCD, TM-γCD) cavities with 9,9-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diboronic acid bis(1,3-propanediol) ester. Their optical, electrochemical and morphological properties have been evaluated and compared to those of the non-rotaxane counterpart 3. The influence of TM-βCD or TM-γCD encapsulation on the thermal stability, solubility in common organic solvents, film forming ability was also investigated. Polyrotaxane 3·TM-βCD exhibits a hypsochromic shift, while 3·TM-γCD displays a bathochromic with respect to the non-rotaxane 3 counterpart. For the diluted CHCl₃ solutions the fluorescence lifetimes of all compounds follow a mono-exponential decay with a time constant of ≈0.6 ns. At higher concentration the fluorescence decay remains mono-exponential for 3·TM-βCD and polymers 3, with a lifetime τ = 0.7 ns and 0.8 ns, whereas the 3·TM-γCD polyrotaxane shows a bi-exponential decay consisting of a main component (with a weight of 98% of the total luminescence) with a relatively short decay constant of τ₁ = 0.7 ns and a minor component with a longer lifetime of τ₂ = 5.4 ns (2%). The electrochemical band gap (ΔE_g) of 3·TM-βCD polyrotaxane is smaller than that of 3·TM-γCD and 3, respectively. The lower ΔE_g value for 3·TM-βCD suggests that the encapsulation has a greater effect on the reduction process, which affects the LUMO energy level value. Based on AFM analysis, 3·TM-βCD and 3·TM-γCD polyrotaxane compounds exhibit a granular morphology with lower dispersity and smaller roughness exponent of the film surfaces in comparison with those of the neat copolymer 3.

Surface modification and adhesion improvement of polyester films

Facile surface modification of polyester films was performed via chemical solutions treatment. Surface hydrolysis was carried out by means of sodium hydroxide solutions, leading to the formation of carboxylate groups. Three commercial polyester films of 100 μm in thickness were used in this work: AryLite™, Mylar™, and Teonex™, hydrolysis time being the main modification parameter. FTIR-ATR analysis, topography and contact angle (CA) measurements, surface free energy (SFE) and T-Peel adhesion tests were carried out to characterize the modified films. A quantitative estimate of the carboxylates surface coverage as a function of treatment time was obtained through a supramolecular approach, i.e. the ionic self-assembly of a tetracationic porphyrin chromophore onto the film surface. The surface free energy and critical surface tension of the hydrolyzed polyesters was evaluated by means of Zisman, Saito, Berthelot and Owens-Wendt methods. It was shown that NaOH solution treatment increases roughness, polarity and surface free energy of polymers. As a result, T-Peel strengths for modified Mylar™ and Teonex™ films were respectively 2.2 and 1.8 times higher than that for the unmodified films, whereas AryLite™ adhesion test failed.

Sliding behavior of liquid droplets on tilted Langmuir-Blodgett surfaces

The sliding behavior of liquid droplets on inclined Langmuir-Blodgett surfaces was investigated. The critical sliding angle defined as the tilt angle of the surface at which the drop slides down as well as the advancing and receding contact angles was measured for five different liquids on five surfaces. In addition, the contact line geometry was analyzed at critical sliding angle. The experimental relationship between the surface tension forces resulting from contact angle hysteresis and the weight of the drop was compared to theoretical predictions. Even though the shape of the drop bases was found as skewed ellipses, a model assuming parallel-sided elongated drops is shown to describe reasonably the experimental values. This result probably indicates the main influence of the capillary forces at the rear and front edges of the drop with respect to that exerted on the lateral sides.

Direct visualization of dewetting of molecularly thin liquid films on solid surfaces

The effect of the surface energy gamma, disjoining pressure, Pi, and roughness on the dewetting of molecularly thin liquid lubricant films on magnetic disks, which have sub-nanometer surface topography, has been investigated by visualizing the dewetting process directly using ellipsometric microscopy. The dewetting process of thin liquids on the rough surface is determined not only by the well-known instability of films, which is determined by the sign of dPi/dh, but also by the sign of Pi and the surface topography of the substrate even if its roughness is of the sub-nanometer order. The dewetting film formed small droplets, which were not along the surface topography of the substrate, when Pi < 0. On the other hand, it formed grooves along the surface topography with a sub-nanometer roughness when Pi > 0. Moreover, the sub-nanometer roughness initiated the dewetting of the metastable liquid thin films.
