Abstract
Despite the advances in the field of pharmaceutical materials and technology, topical administration remains a method of choice for the treatment of eye diseases such as glaucoma, with eye drops being a leading dosage form. Their main disadvantage is a very short drug residence time and thus poor drug bioavailability, leading to the necessity of continuous repeated dosing. Mucoadhesive electrospun nanofibers are promising candidates for overcoming these challenges, while still benefiting from topical ocular administration. As an alternative for eye drops, a nanofibrous drug delivery system (DDS) for the delivery of brinzolamide (BRZ), based on β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and polycaprolactone (PCL), was designed. The results showed β-CD/BRZ guest-host interactions, successful drug incorporation into the nanofibers, and the possibility of more accurate dosing in comparison with the control eye drops. Drug permeation through sheep corneas was almost linear in time, achieving therapeutic concentrations in the receptor medium, and mucoadhesion to sheep eye mucosa was relatively high in case of formulations with high HPC content. All formulations were biocompatible, their mechanical properties were sufficient to handle them without caution and UV irradiation was suitable to reduce bioburden of the fibers matrix, yet no antibacterial properties of BRZ were observed.

Abstract
The goal of this research was to design novel chloro-substituted salicylanilide derivatives and their β-cyclodextrin complexes in order to obtain efficient antibacterial compounds and to demonstrate the beneficial role of complexation on the efficiency of these compounds. Thus, salicylanilide derivatives, esters, and hydrazides were obtained by microwave-assisted synthesis and their structure proven based on FTIR and NMR spectra. In order to improve water solubility, chemical and physical stability, and drug distribution through biological membranes, the inclusion complexes of the ethyl esters in β-cyclodextrin were also obtained using kneading. Inclusion-complex characterization was accomplished by modern analytical methods, X-ray diffraction, SEM, TGA, FTIR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The newly synthesized compounds were tested against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Antimicrobial tests revealed good activity on Gram-positive bacteria and no inhibition against Gram-negative strains. The MIC and MBC values for compounds derived from N-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-hydroxybenzamide were 0.125-1.0 mg/mL. N-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-hydroxybenzamide derivatives were found to be less active. The inclusion complexes generally behaved similarly to the guest compounds, and antibacterial activity was not been altered by complexation.

Abstract
This study evaluated the solubility of piperine (PP) in biorelevant media and the effect of its ground mixtures (GMs) and coprecipitates (CPs) on intestinal contractions when presented in inclusion complexes with α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins (CDs). In the powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, CP (PP/αCD) and CP (PP/γCD) suggest the formation of inclusion complexes. The 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis showed the integrated intensity ratios of CP (PP/αCD) and CP (PP/γCD) protons to be 1/2 and 1/1, the same as the respective molar ratios in the respective GM inclusion complexes. The intestinal contraction test confirmed that the intestinal contraction rate of carbachol (CCh) in the presence of 2.0 × 10-5 M PP was comparable to that in the absence of PP. On the other hand, CP (PP/αCD), GM (PP/αCD = 1/2), and GM (PP/βCD = 1/1) formed inclusion complexes that significantly suppressed the intestinal contractility at PP 1.0 × 10-8 M. No significant differences were observed between CP and GM. The solubility of the PP/αCD inclusion complex was 6-7 times higher than that of PP in the fasted-state-simulated intestinal fluid (FaSSIF, pH 6.5). PP functioned to suppress intestinal contraction by forming an inclusion complex. Based on this result, PP/αCD might be expected to be effective as an antidiarrheal.

Abstract
A new kind of multi-component membrane was prepared by combining gelatin solution, porogen and an inclusion complex of ionic liquid (IL) and beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in a simple physical manner for selective separation of tea polyphenols (TPs) from green tea crude extracts. After screening, it was found that the resulting membrane containing the IL of dicationic N-vinylimidazole proline salt ([VIm]2C3[l-pro]2) had the excellent performance for the enrichment of the target molecules. Then the newly-developed film was comprehensively characterized by scanning electron microscopy, conductivity, thermogravimetry and spectral analysis. Under pressure driving, the adsorption from an aqueous solution of a mixture of TPs and theophylline on IL@β-CD-Gel membrane showed that the adsorption capacity for TPs was 303.45 mg/g with removal percentages of 94.38%. The experimental data fit well with pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model. By using this composite material, a new technology of membrane separation for selective adsorption of TPs was finally established.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical properties of piperine (PP) in ground mixtures (GMs) of PP with α-, β-, or γ-cyclodextrin (CD) under conditions of humidity, heat, and humidity-heat. In solid-state fluorescence measurements, the fluorescence maxima for GM (PP/αCD = 1/2), GM (PP/βCD = 1/1), and GM (PP/γCD = 1/1) were observed at 463, 472, and 469 nm, respectively. On the other hand, the humidified GMs exhibited maxima at 454, 460, and 465 nm, while the humidified-heated samples displayed fluorescence maxima at 455, 455, and 469 nm, respectively. Therefore, the molecular behavior of PP with α, β, and γCD was concluded to vary upon the coordination of water molecules. NIR and solid-state fluorescence measurements revealed that the molecular behavior of PP inside the α, β, and γCD cavity changed by water and heat factors depends on the mobility of the methylenedioxyphenyl group.

Abstract
Phytosterols (PS), that is vegetable sterols, are compounds widely recognized for lowering
the absorption of cholesterol and decreasing cancer risk, with βsitosterol, stigmasterol and campesterol
being the most abundant. As PS is poorly soluble in aqueous solutions, many approaches have been
proposed to increase their solubility and bioavailability. β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) could be used to increase
PS aqueous solubility because of its capacity to entrap a variety of hydrophobic guest molecules
in its cavity. In this work, the formation of β-CD/PS inclusion complexes was confirmed by Differential
Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Electrospray Ionization-High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (ESIHRMS)
and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), while structural characteristics were
determined by one- and two-dimensional Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques. Results
confirmed 1:1 binding stoichiometry, which suggests the total inclusion of rings and chains of the different
PS. The hypothesis of folding of the lateral chains into the cavity may be supported by the multiple
correlations observed in the Nuclear Overhauser Effect Spectroscopy (NOESY) and rotatingframe
Nuclear Overhauser Effect Spectroscopy (ROESY) spectra.

Abstract
The inclusion complexation of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octylsulphate [Bmim][OS] with host α- and β-cyclodextrins (CDs) has been explored by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and COSY methods. The insertion of a guest molecule into the cavity of CD is clearly reflected by changes in 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR chemical shift values and COSY NMR suggest that both H-bonding and electrostatic interactions involved to the complexation.

Steady state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence anisotropy, 1H NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy are used. Both the drug and its copper complex form a host-guest inclusion complex with all CDs. Fluorescence spectroscopy is used to determine binding constants and stoichiometries of the host-guest complex. The strongest binding is seen for γ-CD. 1H NMR study showed that Isoxicam penetrates into the CD cavity from the more accessible wider side. For β- and γ-CD, Isoxicam showed one type of binding, i.e., formation of an inclusion complex, whereas, for HPβCD and HPγCD, it showed two types of binding, i.e., inclusion in the CD cavities and interaction with the outer surface of the CD molecules mainly near the hydroxy propyl group. Deeper penetration occurred into the larger diameter cavity of γ-CD and HPγCD compared to β-CD and HPβCD. From FTIR and 1H NMR study, it is seen that predominantly the π-electron-rich benzene part of the drug and its complex penetrate into the host cavity.

Abstract
To explore the potential biomedical application of thermoresponsive nanosystems, it is important to enhance their thermosensitivity to improve the controllability in delivery of therapeutic agents. The present work develops multifunctional nanogels with enhanced thermosensitivity through copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and acrylic acid (AA) in the presence of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), using N,N'-bis(acryloyl)cystamine (BAC) as a biodegradable crosslinker. The resulting nanogels display significantly improved sensitivity in deswelling (swelling) behavior upon temperature increase (decrease) around body temperature. The nanogels can effectively encapsulate doxorubicin (DOX), which can be released in an accelerated way under microenvironments that mimic intracellular reductive conditions and acidic tumor tissues. Release can also be remotely manipulated by increasing temperature. In vitro study indicates that the nanogels are quickly taken up by KB cells (a human epithelial carcinoma cell line), exerting improved anticancer cytotoxicity, showing their potential for delivery of therapeutic agents beyond anticancer drugs.

Abstract
A new hybrid material for the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) from water was prepared by the polymerization of pentynyl beta-cyclodextrin (PyβCD) and silica micro-particles (SMP). Phenanthrene, being one of the important members of the PAH family and a potential risk for environmental pollution, was selected for this study. Results show that phenanthrene removal efficiency of the SMP was improved significantly after hybridization with PyβCD-polymer. Approximately 50% of the phenanthrene was removed in the first 60 min and more than 95% was removed in less than 7 h when 25 mL of the 2 ppm aqueous phenanthrene solution was incubated with the 100 mg of SMP-PyβCD-polymer material. Infrared spectroscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis show that the enhanced efficiency of the SMP-PyβCD-polymer compared to the unmodified SMP was due to the formation of the inclusion complexation of phenanthrene with the PyβCD. These results indicate that SMP-PyβCD polymers have a potential to be applied as molecular filters in water purification systems and also for waste water treatment.

Abstract
Since several years the inclusion of organic compounds (guests) within the hydrophobic cavity (host) of cyclodextrins (CDs) has been the subject of many investigations. Interestingly, the formation of inclusion complexes could affect the properties of the guest molecules and, for example, the influence of the delivery system can be a method to improve/change the photochemical behavior of the guest. In particular, very recent studies have shown the protective role of CDs preventing the degradation of the encapsulated guest. Starting from this consideration, in this work, only the structure and complexation mode of the inclusion complexes involving 4-thiothymidine (S(4)TdR, a known photosensitizer) and five CDs, namely 2-hydroxypropyl-α-cyclodextrin (2-HP-α-CD), 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (2-HP-β-CD), 2-hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin (2-HP-γ-CD), heptakis-(2,6-di-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin (DIMEB CD) and heptakis-(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin (TRIMEB CD) were investigated by different spectroscopic techniques (UV-vis, FTIR-ATR, (1)H NMR) and cyclic voltammetry analysis (CV). This work is necessary for a prospective research on the photoreactivity of S(4)TdR in aqueous environment and in the presence of CDs to prevent its degradation under irradiation. UV-vis, FTIR-ATR and CV measurements suggested the formation of supramolecular structures involving the employed CDs and mainly the pyrimidine ring of S(4)TdR. (1)H NMR analyses confirmed such indication, unveiling the presence of inclusion complexes. The strongest and deepest interactions were suggested when TRIMEB and DIMEB CDs were studied. The S(4)TdR affinity towards CDs was also evaluated by using the Benesi-Hildebrand (B-H) equation at 25 °C employing CV and (1)H NMR methods. The stoichiometry of the interaction was also inferred and it appears to be 1:1 for all examined CDs.

Abstract
In the present research, the aqueous stability of leuprolide acetate (LA) in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) medium was studied (pH = 2.0-7.4). For this purpose, the effect of temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH on the stability of LA during 35 days was investigated. Results showed that the aqueous stability of LA was higher at low temperatures. Degassing of the PBS medium partially increased the stability of LA at 4 °C, while did not change at 37 °C. The degradation of LA was accelerated at lower pH values. In addition, complexes of LA with different portions of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) were prepared through freeze-drying procedure and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. Studying their aqueous stability at various pH values (2.0-7.4) showed LA/β-CD complexes exhibited higher stability when compared with LA at all pH values. The stability of complexes was also improved by increasing the portion of LA/β-CD up to 1/10.

Abstract
This study investigated the steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence properties of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) and 17β-estradiol (E2) in the presence of ordered media (β-cyclodextrins (β-CD) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)). In addition, we analyzed the effects of four room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) on the fluorescence intensities (FIs) of EE2/β-CD and E2/β-CD inclusion complexes in methanol. Both β-CD and CTAB enhanced the fluorescence of EE2 and E2. The FIs of EE2 and E2 with β-CD or CTAB in methanol were greater than those in water, possibly resulting from decreased oxygen-quenching in H2O molecules. β-CD and CTAB may form inclusion complexes with estrogen in both water and methanol. The inclusion ratio of the complex was 1:1 and the inclusion constant (K) values in water were greater than those in methanol. The fluorescence lifetimes were 2.50 and 4.13 ns for EE2 and 2.58 and 4.03 ns for E2 in aqueous solution and methanol, respectively. The changing trend of fluorescence lifetimes for EE2 and E2 in β-CD or CTAB was similar to the steady-state FIs. The four RTILs had a significant quenching effect on the FIs of EE2/β-CD and E2/β-CD, and the quenching process for EE2/β-CD and E2/β-CD by RTILs was demonstrated to be a dynamic quenching mechanism. Fluorescent data obtained from these complex systems provide a theoretical foundation for understanding the interaction mechanisms between ordered media and RTILs in the analysis of estrogens.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins are able to act as host molecules in supramolecular chemistry with applications ranging from pharmaceutics to detergency. Among guest molecules surfactants play an important role with both fundamental and practical applications. The formation of cyclodextrin/surfactant host-guest compounds leads to an increase in the critical micelle concentration and in the solubility of surfactants. The possibility of changing the balance between several intermolecular forces, and thus allowing the study of, e.g., dehydration and steric hindrance effects upon association, makes surfactants ideal guest molecules for fundamental studies. Therefore, these systems allow for obtaining a deep insight into the host-guest association mechanism. In this paper, we review the influence on the thermodynamic properties of CD-surfactant association by highlighting the effect of different surfactant architectures (single tail, double-tailed, gemini and bolaform), with special emphasis on cationic surfactants. This is complemented with an assessment of the most common analytical techniques used to follow the association process. The applied methods for computation of the association stoichiometry and stability constants are also reviewed and discussed; this is an important point since there are significant discrepancies and scattered data for similar systems in the literature. In general, the surfactant-cyclodextrin association is treated without reference to the kinetics of the process. However, there are several examples where the kinetics of the process can be investigated, in particular those where volumes of the CD cavity and surfactant (either the tail or in special cases the head group) are similar in magnitude. This will also be critically reviewed.

Abstract
Ionic liquids functionalized β-cyclodextrin polymer, a mono-6-deoxy-6-(1,2-dimethylimidazolium)-β-cyclodextrin iodide polymer (ILs-β-CDCP), was synthesized as a solid-phase adsorbent coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography for separating or analyzing magnolol in drug samples. The results showed that magnolol was adsorbed rapidly on ILs-β-CDCP and eluted with methanol. Under the optimum conditions, preconcentration factor of the proposed method was 12. The linear range, limit of detection (LOD), correlation coefficient (R) and relative standard deviation (RSD) were found to be 0.02-8.00 μg/mL, 1.9 ng/mL, 0.9992 and 2.76% (n=3, c=2.00 μg/mL), respectively. The interaction between ILs-β-CDCP and magnolol was studied through the inclusion constant, FTIR and TGA analysis. This proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of magnolol in real samples.

Abstract
A β-cyclodextrin (β-Cyd) inclusion complex containing azomethine as a guest was prepared by kneading method with aliquot addition of ethanol. The product was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) and Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA), which proves the formation of the inclusion complex where the benzyl part of azomethine has been encapsulated by the hydrophobic cavity of β-Cyd. The interaction of β-Cyd and azomethine was also analyzed by means of spectrometry by UV-Vis spectrophotometer to determine the formation constant. The formation constant was calculated by using a modified Benesi-Hildebrand equation at 25 °C. The apparent formation constant obtained was 1.29 × 104 L/mol. Besides that, the stoichiometry ratio was also determined to be 1:1 for the inclusion complex of β-Cyd with azomethine.

Abstract
The gelling behavior of some geminal diimidazolium salts was investigated in solvents differing in polarity and hydrogen bond donor ability. The used salts, namely the 3,3'-di-n-decyl-1,1'(1,4-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium dibromide [p-Xyl-(decim)(2)][Br](2) (1), the 3,3'-di-n-dodecyl-1,1'(1,4-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium dibromide [p-Xyl-(dodecim)(2)][Br](2) (2), and the 3,3'-di-n-dodecyl-1,1'(1,4-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium ditetrafluoroborate [p-Xyl-(dodecim)(2)][BF(4)](2) (3), differ in the alkyl chain length and in the anion properties, such as size, shape, and coordination ability. In all cases in which gelation process was observed, the obtained gels were characterized by gel melting temperature determination, resonance light scattering, and UV-vis measurements. On the whole, the investigation allowed to get information about both the thermodynamic stability and the features of the aggregates characterizing the soft materials at the equilibrium. Data collected by us point out that the used organic salts are able to behave as both hydro- and organogelators. In particular, bromide salts formed hydrogels in the presence of α-cyclodextrin allowing to hypothesize that the gelation process is favored by the formation of supramolecular assemblies. To verify this hypothesis, 1D and 2D (1)H NMR measurements were carried out. Both the alkyl chain length and the anion ability to reticulate the three-dimensional network proved to be determinant factors in affecting the gelation process as well as the features of the gel phases. Finally, with the future aim to use the obtained gels as reaction media, the effect of a guest molecule such as the UV-vis active probe Nile Red was studied.

Conventional study on novel dicationic ionic liquid inclusion with β-cyclodextrin. Int J Mol Sci 2011; 12:6329-45. Abstract
This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of the inclusion complex of β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) with dicationic ionic liquid, 3,3′-(1,4-Phenylenebis [methylene]) bis(1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium) di(bromide) (PhenmimBr). The inclusion complex was prepared at room temperature utilizing conventional kneading technique. Proton (1H) NMR and 2D (1H–1H) COSY NMR were the primary characterization tools employed to verify the formation of the inclusion complex. COSY spectra showed strong correlations between protons of imidazolium and protons of β-CD which indicates that the imidazolium ring of PhenmimBr has entered the cavity of β-CD. UV absorption indicated that β-CD reacts with PhenmimBr to form a 2:1 β-CD-PhenmimBr complex with an apparent formation constant of 2.61 × 105 mol&−2 L2. Other characterization studies such as UV, FT-IR, XRD, TGA, DSC and SEM studies were also used to further support the formation of the β-CD-PhenmimBr inclusion complex.
