Functionally modified core-shell silica nanoparticles by one-pot synthesis

Interfacial Cooperative Assembly of Surfactants and Opposite Wettability Nanoparticles Stabilizes Water-in-Oil Emulsions at High Temperature

Pickering emulsions have promising applications in the development of unconventional oil and gas resources. However, the high-temperature environment of the reservoir is not conducive to the stabilization of Pickering emulsions. In addition, the preparation of Pickering emulsions under low-energy emulsification and low-concentration emulsifier conditions is a difficult challenge. Here, we report a high-temperature resistant water-in-paraffin oil Pickering emulsion, which is synergistically stabilized by polyglycerol ester (PGE) and nanoparticles with opposite wettability (lipophilic silica and hydrophilic alumina). This emulsion can be prepared under mild stirring (500 rpm) conditions and can be stable at 140 °C for at least 30 days. The synergistic effects of surfactant, silicon nanoparticles (MSNPs) with different wettability, and alumina nanoparticles (AONPs) on the stability of both emulsions and water-oil interfacial membranes were investigated through bottle experiments, cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), optical microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, etc. The results showed that both hydrophobic MSNPs and hydrophilic AONPs are adsorbed together at the water-oil interface to stabilize the W/O emulsion, which can be prepared by 500 rpm stirring. The stability of emulsions strongly depends on the wettability of MSNPs, and the MSNP with moderate hydrophobicity (for example, aqueous phase contact angle of 136°) makes the emulsion exhibit the highest stability against aggregation and settling at elevated temperatures. The emulsion stabilization mechanism was revealed in terms of the adsorption capacity of the surfactant by MSNPs, the adsorption morphology and desorption energy of nanoparticles at the water-oil interface adsorption layer, and emulsion rheology. These findings demonstrate a novel and simple strategy to prepare Pickering W/O emulsions with high-temperature stability at low shear strength.

The emergence of nanoporous materials in lung cancer therapy

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers, affecting more than 2.1 million people across the globe every year. A very high occurrence and mortality rate of lung cancer have prompted active research in this area with both conventional and novel forms of therapies including the use of nanomaterials based drug delivery agents. Specifically, the unique physico-chemical and biological properties of porous nanomaterials have gained significant momentum as drug delivery agents for delivering a combination of drugs or merging diagnosis with targeted therapy for cancer treatment. This review focuses on the emergence of nano-porous materials for drug delivery in lung cancer. The review analyses the currently used nanoporous materials, including inorganic, organic and hybrid porous materials for delivering drugs for various types of therapies, including chemo, radio and phototherapy. It also analyses the selected research on stimuli-responsive nanoporous materials for drug delivery in lung cancer before summarizing the various findings and projecting the future of emerging trends. This review provides a strong foundation for the current status of the research on nanoporous materials, their limitations and the potential for improving their design to overcome the unique challenges of delivering drugs for the treatment of lung cancer.

Effect of Silane Functionalization on Properties of Poly(Lactic Acid)/Palygorskite Nanocomposites

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/palygorskite (Paly) nanocomposites were prepared using the melt compounding technique. Paly modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) was used as nanofiller for PLA with concentrations in the 1–7 wt% range. It has been found that the functionalization allows a covalent bond between the hydroxyl groups of the Paly and the PLA matrix, evidenced by the improvement in mechanical properties. Paly modification with VTMS has better properties compared with Pale modification with APTES. This indicates a better adhesion between the Paly-VTMS and PLA matrix, and a good dispersion of the nanofiller in the polymer matrix.

Molecularly imprinted polymer functionalized silica nanoparticles for enantioseparation of racemic tryptophan in aqueous solution

A method has been developed for preparation of surface molecularly imprinted polymer functionalized silica nanoparticles (SiO₂@MPS@MIP). Firstly, the silica nanoparticles are prepared by a one-pot sol-gel method using tetraethylorthosilicate and 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane as functional monomers. Next, the template molecule (L-Trp) is self-assembled with the functional monomer (acrylamide). Finally, SiO₂@MPS@MIP are prepared using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the cross-linker. The prepared SiO₂@MPS@MIP have an average diameter of about 6.3 ± 1.2 nm. They exhibit good selectivity toward L-Trp with an imprinting factor of 6.3. The adsorption isotherm data was well described by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of SiO₂@MPS@MIP for L-Trp and D-Trp were calculated to be 11.1 ± 0.9 and 2.66 ± 0.16 mg g^-1, respectively. An enantiomer excess value of 100% was achieved after adsorption of racemic Trp by the material. The work suggests that SiO₂@MPS@MIP are a promising material for enantioseparation of Trp racemate in aqueous media. Graphical abstract.

Thiol-Ene Click Synthesis of Phenylboronic Acid-Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework for Selective Catechol Removal from Aqueous Medium

We report a thiol-ene click strategy for the preparation of a novel phenylboronic acid-functionalized covalent organic framework (COF) for selective removal of catechol in aqueous solution. Vinyl-functionalized 2,5-diallyloxyterephthalaldehyde (Da-V) was prepared as a building ligand. Da-V was then condensed with 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (Tab) to give a vinyl-functionalized COF DhaTab-V. Subsequently, 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) was covalently linked on DhaTab-V via thiol-ene click reaction to give phenylboronic acid-functionalized COF DhaTab-PBA. The adsorption isotherms, energetics and kinetics, and reusability of DhaTab-PBA for the adsorption and removal of catechol from aqueous solution were investigated in detail. This phenylboronic acid-functionalized COF is promising as sorbent for selective removal of catechol from aqueous medium with large adsorption capacity and good reusability.

Effect of Ethanol on Ag@Mesoporous Silica Formation by In Situ Modified Stöber Method

Tunable core-shell Ag@Mesoporous SiO₂ spheres were synthesized via an in situ modified Stöber approach by varying the amount of ethanol (EtOH) expanding their potentials in many applications. Mesoporous silica was generated by adding tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) to the mixture of colloidal Ag particles prepared by reducing silver nitrate (AgNO₃) with L-ascorbic acid and using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a template at the presence of ethanol and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at pH 10 as a catalyst. The average sizes of the Ag cores at the three increasing volumes of ethanol were ~47 ± 6, 36 ± 4, and 11 ± 5 nm, while the silica particle size and the thickness of the silica shells increased, resulting in a blueshift of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) of the Ag NPs. The corresponding specific surface areas of silica particles were 356 ± 10, 419 ± 20 and 490 ± 25 m² g-1, and average pore diameters varied from 5.7, 5.0 to 3.3 nm according to BET and BJH analyses. TEM studies confirmed the core-shell structure, pore sizes and shapes of mesoporous shells. The dissolution tests demonstrated that the release of Ag from the powder samples is pH-sensitive and time-dependent.

Enhancing the energy density of asymmetric stretchable supercapacitor based on wrinkled CNT@MnO2 cathode and CNT@polypyrrole anode

With the advantages of high stickiness and stretchability of the hydrogel electrolyte as well as the resilient properties of film electrodes, the facile "prestrain-stick-release" strategy can be utilized for the assembly of a stretchable supercapacitor. Two major issues of concern are the relatively low mechanical strength of the hydrogel electrolyte and the low energy density of the assembled device. Herein, vinyl group grafted silica (CH2═CH-SiO2) nanoparticles were used as a nanoparticle cross-linker for polyacrylamide (PAAM), enhancing the tensile strength of 844 kPa at the strain of 3400% for the KCl-CH2═CH-SiO2/PAAM hydrogel electrolyte. Besides, carbon nanotube supported polypyrrole (CNT@PPy) and manganese dioxide (CNT@MnO2) film electrodes are prepared to assemble the stretchable asymmetric CNT@MnO2//KCl-CH2═CH-SiO2/PAAM//CNT@PPy supercapacitor, significantly enhancing the potential window to 0-2.0 V and achieving a high energy density of 40 Wh kg(-1) at the power density of 519 kW kg(-1) with the strain of 100%, which is the best known for the reported stretchable supercapacitors.

Novel Organically Modified Core-Shell Clay for Epoxy Composites-"SOBM Filler 1"

Preparation of a novel organically modified clay from spent oil base drilling mud (SOBM) that could serve as core-shell clay filler for polymers is herein reported. Due to the hydrophilic nature of clay, its compatibility with polymer matrix was made possible through modification of the surface of the core clay sample with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APTES) compound prior to its use. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was used to characterize clay surface modification. Electron dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to expose filler chemical composition and morphology, while electrophoresis measurement was used to examine level of filler dispersion. Results show an agglomerated core clay powder after high temperature treatment, while EDX analysis shows that the organically modified clay is composed of chemical inhomogeneities, wherein elemental compositions in weight percent vary from one point to the other in a probe of two points. Micrographs of the 3-APTES coupled SOBM core-shell clay filler clearly show cloudy appearance, while FT-IR indicates 25% and 5% increases in fundamental vibrations band at 1014 cm⁻¹ and 1435 cm⁻¹, respectively. Furthermore, 3-APTES coupled core-shell clay was used to prepare epoxy composites and tested for mechanical properties.

Enhanced functionalization of Mn2O3@SiO2 core-shell nanostructures

Core-shell nanostructures of Mn2O3@SiO2, Mn2O3@amino-functionalized silica, Mn2O3@vinyl-functionalized silica, and Mn2O3@allyl-functionalized silica were synthesized using the hydrolysis of the respective organosilane precursor over Mn2O3 nanoparticles dispersed using colloidal solutions of Tergitol and cyclohexane. The synthetic methodology used is an improvement over the commonly used post-grafting or co-condensation method as it ensures a high density of functional groups over the core-shell nanostructures. The high density of functional groups can be useful in immobilization of biomolecules and drugs and thus can be used in targeted drug delivery. The high density of functional groups can be used for extraction of elements present in trace amounts. These functionalized core-shell nanostructures were characterized using TEM, IR, and zeta potential studies. The zeta potential study shows that the hydrolysis of organosilane to form the shell results in more number of functional groups on it as compared to the shell formed using post-grafting method. The amino-functionalized core-shell nanostructures were used for the immobilization of glucose and L-methionine and were characterized by zeta potential studies.
