Binding of alkylpyridinium chloride surfactants to sodium polystyrene sulfonate

The Gibbs and Butler Equations and the Surface Activity of Dilute Aqueous Solutions of Strong and Weak Linear Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Mixtures: The Roles of Surface Composition and Polydispersity

In a previous paper, we applied a combination of direct measurements of both surface tension and surface excess in conjunction with the Gibbs equation to explain features of the adsorption and surface tension of mixtures of surfactants and strong linear polyelectrolytes at the air-water interface. This paper extends that model by including (i) the restrictions of the Butler equation for the behavior of the surface tension of mixed systems and (ii) the surface behavior of surfactant and linear weak polyelectrolyte mixtures, for which the inclusion of measurements of the surface excess and composition is shown to be particularly important. In addition, a closer examination of earlier data at higher concentrations provides evidence that the surface layering that is often observed in polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems is also an average equilibrium phenomenon and is driven by particular aggregation patterns that occur in some systems and not in others. Although the successful application of the Gibbs and Butler equations indicates that strong polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems can be described in terms of an average equilibrium over wide ranges of concentration, we have identified two concentration ranges where polydispersity in either polyelectrolyte molecular weight or composition results in significant time dependence of the surface behavior.

Comparison of Same Carbon Chain Length Cationic and Anionic Surfactant Adsorption on Silica

Adsorption of a cationic surfactant dodecyl pyridinium chloride (DPC) on silica was studied to show a comparison with the adsorption of an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), whose carbon chain length is the same and on the same silica. Results provided a better understanding of the adsorption mechanism of cationic and anionic surfactant on negatively charged silica. The experiment covered different electrolyte concentrations and pH values. Results indicated that at the same pH, the DPC adsorption amounts are higher when the electrolyte concentration is higher; at a higher DPC equilibrium concentration, the adsorption amount difference is larger than that at low DPC equilibrium concentration, and when DPC equilibrium concentration is lower than 0.1 mmol/L, the adsorption amount difference cannot be observed. At charge compensation point (CCP, 0 zeta potential), the negative surface charge of silica was compensated by DP+, a continuous increasing zeta potential indicated a bilayer adsorption of DPC on silica. The adsorption amount increased with increasing pH. The calculated lines by Gu and Zhu model show a two-step property, including a bilayer and hemi-micelle adsorption. DPC adsorbed more strongly on silica than SDS due to the combination of electrostatic and hydrophobic attraction.

Surfactant adsorption to soil components and soils

Soils are complex and widely varying mixtures of organic matter and inorganic materials; adsorption of surfactants to soils is therefore related to the soil composition. We first discuss the properties of surfactants, including the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and surfactant adsorption on water/air interfaces, the latter gives an impression of surfactant adsorption to a hydrophobic surface and illustrates the importance of the CMC for the adsorption process. Then attention is paid to the most important types of soil particles: humic and fulvic acids, silica, metal oxides and layered aluminosilicates. Information is provided on their structure, surface properties and primary (proton) charge characteristics, which are all important for surfactant binding. Subsequently, the adsorption of different types of surfactants on these individual soil components is discussed in detail, based on mainly experimental results and considering the specific (chemical) and electrostatic interactions, with hydrophobic attraction as an important component of the specific interactions. Adsorption models that can describe the features semi-quantitatively are briefly discussed. In the last part of the paper some trends of surfactant adsorption on soils are briefly discussed together with some complications that may occur and finally the consequences of surfactant adsorption for soil colloidal stability and permeability are considered. When we seek to understand the fate of surfactants in soil and aqueous environments, the hydrophobicity and charge density of the soil or soil particles, must be considered together with the structure, hydrophobicity and charge of the surfactants, because these factors affect the adsorption. The pH and ionic strength are important parameters with respect to the charge density of the particles. As surfactant adsorption influences soil structure and permeability, insight in surfactant adsorption to soil particles is useful for good soil management.

Polycation-sodium lauryl ether sulfate-type surfactant complexes: influence of ethylene oxide length

Polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes (PESC) are a class of materials which form spontaneously by self-assembly driven by electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. PESC containing sodium lauryl ether sulfates (SLES) have found wide application in hair care products like shampoo. Typically, SLES with only one or two ethylene oxide (EO) groups are used for this application. We have studied the influence of the size of the EO block (ranging from 0 to 30 EO groups) on complexation with two model polycations: linear polyDADMAC and branched PEI. PESC size and electrostatic properties were determined during stepwise titration of buffered polycation solutions. The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) of PESC was determined by surface tension measurements and fluorescence spectroscopy. For polyDADMAC, there is no influence of the size of the EO block on the complexation behavior; the stiff polycation governs the structure formation. For PEI, it was seen that the EO block size does affect the structure of the complexes. The CAC value of the investigated complexes turns out to be rather independent of the EO block size; however, the CMC/CAC ratio decreases with increasing size of the EO block. This latter observation explains why the Lochhead-Goddard effect is most effective for small EO blocks.

Influence of organic matter type and medium composition on the sorption affinity of C12-benzalkonium cation

We used the 7-μm polyacrylate ion-exchange SPME fibers to investigate C12-benzalkonium sorption to 10 mg/L natural organic matter at concentrations well below the cation-exchange capacity. C12-BAC sorption at constant medium conditions differed within 0.4 log units for two humic acids (Aldrich, Leonardite) and peat (Sphagnum, Pahokee), with similar nonlinear sorption isotherms (KF ∼ 0.8). Sorption to the SPME fibers and Aldrich humic acid (AHA) was reduced at both low pH and high electrolyte concentration, and reduced more strongly by Ca²⁺ compared with Na⁺ at similar concentrations. Sorption isotherms for AHA (5-50-500 mM Na⁺, pH 6) was modeled successfully by the NICA-Donnan approach, resulting in an intrinsic sorption coefficient of 5.35 (Caq = 1 nM). The NICA-Donnan model further explained the stronger specific binding of Ca²⁺ compared to Na⁺ by differences in Boltzmann factors. This study provides relevant information to interpret bioavailability of quaternary ammonium compounds, and possibly for other organic cations.

Removal of charged micropollutants from water by ion-exchange polymers -- effects of competing electrolytes

A wide variety of environmental compounds of concern, e.g. pharmaceuticals or illicit drugs, are acids or bases that may predominantly be present as charged species in drinking water sources. These charged micropollutants may prove difficult to remove by currently used water treatment steps (e.g. UV/H(2)O(2), activated carbon (AC) or membranes). We studied the sorption affinity of some ionic organic compounds to both AC and different charged polymeric materials. Ion-exchange polymers may be effective as additional extraction phases in water treatment, because sorption of all charged compounds to oppositely charged polymers was stronger than to AC, especially for the double-charged cation metformin. Tested below 1% of the polymer ion-exchange capacity, the sorption affinity of charged micropollutants is nonlinear and depends on the composition of the aqueous medium. Whereas oppositely charged electrolytes do not impact sorption of organic ions, equally charged electrolytes do influence sorption indicating ion-exchange (IE) to be the main sorption mechanism. For the tested polymers, a tenfold increased salt concentration lowered the IE-sorption affinity by a factor two. Different electrolytes affect IE with organic ions in a similar way as inorganic ions on IE-resins, and no clear differences in this trend were observed between the sulphonated and the carboxylated cation-exchanger. Sorption of organic cations is five fold less in Ca(2+) solutions compared to similar concentrations of Na(+), while that of anionic compounds is three fold weaker in SO(4)(2-) solutions compared to equal concentrations of Cl(-).
