Edible Long-Afterglow Photoluminescent Materials for Bioimaging

Confining luminophores into modified hydrophilic matrices or polymers is a straightforward and widely used approach for afterglow bioimaging. However, the afterglow quantum yield and lifetime of the related material remain unsatisfactory, severely limiting the using effect especially for deep-tissue time-resolved imaging. This fact largely stems from the dilemma between material biocompatibility and the quenching effect of water environment. Herein an in situ metathesis promoted doping strategy is presented, namely, mixing ≈10-3 weight ratio of organic-emitter multicarboxylates with inorganic salt reactants, followed by metathesis reactions to prepare a series of hydrophilic but water-insoluble organic-inorganic doping afterglow materials. This strategy leads to the formation of edible long-afterglow photoluminescent materials with superior biocompatibility and excellent bioimaging effect. The phosphorescence quantum yield of the materials can reach dozens of percent (the highest case: 66.24%), together with the photoluminescent lifetime lasting for coupes of seconds. Specifically, a long-afterglow barium meal formed by coronene salt emitter and BaSO4 matrix is applied into animal experiments by gavage, and bright stomach afterglow imaging is observed by instruments or mobile phone after ceasing the photoexcitation with deep tissue penetration. This strategy allows a flexible dosage of the materials during bioimaging, facilitating the development of real-time probing and theranostic technology.

Pullulan Oxidation in the Presence of Hydrogen Peroxide and N-Hydroxyphthalimide

The C-6 in the maltotriose unit of pullulan was oxidized in an alkaline medium (pH = 10), utilizing a green method that included hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) as an oxidant and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) as a catalyst for various reaction times. The structure of the resulting oxidized pullulans (PO) was carefully characterized by titration, intrinsic viscosity, FTIR, ¹³C-NMR, and zeta potential. The content of carboxyl groups in PO was dependent on reaction time and varied accordingly. Furthermore, a fast reaction rate was found in the first 2-3 h of the reaction, followed by a decreased rate in the subsequent hours. FTIR and ¹³C-NMR proved that the selective oxidation of the primary alcohol groups of pullulan was achieved. The oxidation also caused the glycoside linkages in the pullulan chain to break, and the viscosity of the pullulan itself went down.

Influence of TEMPO oxidation on the properties of ethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate grafted cellulose sponges

In this study, cellulose nanofibers (CNF) obtained via high-pressure microfluidization were 2,6,6-tetra-methylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) oxidized (TOCNF) in order to facilitate the grafting of ethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate (EGA). FTIR and XPS analyses revealed a more efficient grafting of EGA oligomers on the surface of TOCNF as compared to the original CNF. As a result, a consistent covering of the TOCNF fibers with EGA oligomers, an increased hydrophobicity and a reduction in porosity were noticed for TOCNF-EGA. However, the swelling ratio of TOCNF-EGA was similar to that of original CNF grafted with EGA and higher than that of TOCNF, because the higher amount of grafted EGA onto oxidized cellulose and the looser structure reduced the contacts between the fibrils and increased the absorption of water. All these results corroborated with a good cytocompatibility and compression strength recommend TOCNF-EGA for applications in regenerative medicine.

Production of wheat germ oil containing multilayer hydrogel dressing

A composite wound dressing has been developed by combining different layers consisting of polymers and textiles. Wheat germ oil (WGO) loaded hydrogels have successfully formed on textile nonwovens by cross-linking sodium alginate (SA) with poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE). Following freeze-drying, textile-hydrogel composites have been examined according to their physical properties, pH, fluid handling capacity, water vapour permeability, morphology, chemical structure, and cytotoxicity. Hydrogels containing WGO swelled less than pristine hydrogels. Samples with 1% WGO and no WGO showed swelling of 5.9 and 10.5 g/g after 8 h. WGO inclusion resulted in reduced, but more stable fluid handling properties, with more uniform pore distribution (100-200 μm). Moreover, the proliferation of NIH/3T3 cells significantly improved with 1% WGO contained hydrogels. Also, commercial self-adhesive dressings that secure the hydrogels to the wound area were investigated regarding transfer properties. The proposed product demonstrated 8.05 cm³/cm²/s and 541.37 g/m²/day air and water vapour permeability.

New Approach for Recycling Office Waste Paper: An Efficient and Recyclable Material for Oily Wastewater Treatment

Recycling has attracted great attention in academia, because of the economic and environmental benefits to industry. An eco-friendly strategy for recycling office waste paper (WP) was used to sustainedly separate oil-water mixtures. The hydroxyl groups of cellulose endow WP with superlipophilic and superhydrophilic properties in air and superoleophobic features under water. WP could separate various oils from oil-water mixtures, with separation efficiencies exceeding 99%. Importantly, the superhydrophilic WP could separate oil-water mixtures containing HCl, NaOH, and NaCl with separation efficiency above 98.9% for at least 30 cycles. The superoleophobicity of WP was maintained in solutions of different pH values for at least 24 h, suggesting good durability and stability. This green method is renewable, clean, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly. More importantly, the recycled office waste paper not only removes oil from oily wastewater (such as in oil spills) but also realizes the recycling of WP. This method could provide new insights into resource recycling.

Selective oxidation of cellulose, mediated by N-hydroxyphthalimide, under a metal-free environment

The generation of the phthalimide-N-oxyl (PINO) free radical from its N-hydroxylphthalimide (NHPI) precursor under a metal free environment, to selectively oxidize the primary OH groups in cellulose is reported.

Chemical modification and characterization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) surfaces for collagen immobilization

The functionalization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) surface films by reactions with multifunctional amines such as triethylenetetramine (TETA), and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) was investigated. For the functionalization of PET films surface we used a new way of treatment, a “sandwich model”. Physical-chemical properties of functionalized PET films were analysed. Qualitative and quantitative determination of the introduced amine groups were examined by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Attenuated Total Reflexion (FTIR — ATR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and potentiometric titration. Gained wetting properties were determined by using contact angle measurements and thoroughly analysed by acid-base approach. In addition, surface topography was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The amount of the introduced amino groups after TETA incorporation has been found to be two times higher as compared to TEPA. Wetting properties were significantly improved after aminolysis. Surface free energy was higher for PET — TETA treated film than that observed for PET — TEPA treated which is in accordance with titration results. The collagen immobilization onto PET treated films was evidenced by using AFM and subsequently by using XPS.
