Abstract
Pickering emulsions have recently emerged as versatile systems capable of targeting many applications of wastewater treatment. The unique properties, which include high emulsion stability, easy preparation, low toxicity, and stimuli-responsiveness, pave the way for advances in common pollutant control processes. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview on different aspects in the Pickering emulsion design focusing on the key structural relations and their implications in specific applications. The first section is dedicated to the critical parameters governing the Pickering emulsion type, droplet size and stability. Furthermore, a section describing methods for demulsification and particle recovery is included, in which various stimuli have been explored. Finally, the most potent applications of Pickering emulsions such as photocatalytic degradation, adsorption, extraction, and separation of common wastewater pollutants are presented and discussed with a great deal of attention towards the efficacy, current limitations, and future potential. Recognizing the rise of innovative Pickering emulsion solutions is expected to induce profound effects facilitating the technology transfer to industrial processes.

Abstract
In this work, we aimed to investigate the effect of the combination of starch nanoparticles (SNPs) and Tween 80 (TW) on the stability of oil-in-water emulsions. The emulsions prepared under different SNPs/TW ratios and different oil fraction values were characterized by means of photography, optical microscopy, laser particle size analysis, rheological measurement, quartz crystal microbalance analysis, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. At an oil fraction value of 0.4, the emulsions with a 3: 1 ratio of SNPs (1.5%, w/v) to TW (0.5%, w/v) exhibited excellent storage stability over a long period of 30 d, which was significantly better than the 2% TW stabilized emulsion and the 2% SNPs stabilized emulsion. Compared with the SNPs stable emulsions, the presence of TW decreased the emulsion droplets size, which was beneficial to reduce the aggregation of droplets. Emulsions co-stabilized by SNPs and TW can maintain good performance under harsh conditions. The results of quartz crystal microbalance analysis and isothermal titration calorimetry revealed non-covalent interactions between SNPs and TW. The results showed that SNPs and TW co-existed at the oil-water interface and improved the performance of the emulsion.

Abstract
The incorporation of pigments and natural polyphenols into inorganic matrices, resulting in a hybrid material that improves the resistance and chemical stability of the pigments and the antioxidant capacity of the materials, has been of great interest to the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industries. The aim of this work was to prepare and characterize a bifunctional pigment-antioxidant nanomaterial-based carminic acid-decorated solid core-mesoporous shell silica nanoparticles, evaluating its properties as a pigment, its antioxidant capacity and its properties as a chemical stabilizer of emulsions. The chemical stability of oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions was evaluated determining the stability of vitamin E solubilized in the oil phase. Carminic acid was attached through the action of coupling ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC)/N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) agents, and the resulting spherical and homogeneous nanoparticles showed a diameter close to 175 nm. A notorious change of emulsion color was observed by the addition of the nanomaterial. Emulsions showed an attractive pink color, and when the pH was adjusted to pH 3 and pH 9, a change in color was observed, analogous to carminic acid in solution. The nanomaterial incorporation also improved chemical stability, decreasing vitamin E consumption to 9.26% of the initial value, demonstrating an important antioxidant effect of the developed nanomaterial.

Abstract
Silicone oil emulsions stabilized by various emulsifiers such as polymers, solid particles alone, and solid particles with pre-adsorbed surfactants or polymers are reviewed, focusing on their emulsion stability and rheological properties as a function of the emulsifier concentration. An increase in the concentration of the emulsifier leads to a decrease in the droplet size and an increase in the emulsion stability, irrespective of the emulsifier. Moreover, the overlapping concentration of polymer can be regarded as a criterion for the preparation of emulsions using polymeric emulsifiers. Changes in the emulsion stability and rheological responses of the emulsions prepared by the solid particles with pre-adsorbed polymers are discussed in terms of the amounts of the emulsifiers adsorbed. For emulsions prepared from hydrophilic silica particles with pre-adsorbed polymers, a decrease in the droplet size of an order of magnitude can be controlled by an increase in the concentration of polymer, whereas hydrophilic silica particles alone cannot produce stable silicone oil emulsions.

Abstract
Latex/starch nanocrystal (SNC) nanocomposite dispersions were successfully synthesized via a one-step surfactant-free Pickering emulsion polymerization route using SNC as the sole stabilizer. The effect of the SNC content, initiator type and comonomer on the particle size, colloidal stability, and film properties were investigated. Both HCl and H2SO4-hydrolysed starch nanocrystals, each bearing different surface charges, were used as Pickering emulsion stabilizing nanoparticles. SNCs from HCl hydrolysis were found to provide a better stabilization effect, giving rise to a polymer dispersion with a lower average particle size. The mechanistic aspects of the Pickering emulsion polymerization were also discussed. Nanocomposites formed by film-casting the polymer Pickering emulsions showed better mechanical properties and optical transparency than those obtained by blending the polymer emulsion with a nanocrystal dispersion, showing the one-pot route to nanocomposite precursors to be doubly advantageous. Therefore, this in situ polymerization technique not only facilitates the use of SNC nanoparticles, it also provides a valuable nanocomposite with enhanced mechanical properties and high transparency level.
