Impact of carbon dioxide on the surface tension of 1-hexanol aqueous solutions

Surface tensions at elevated pressure depend strongly on bulk phase saturation

HYPOTHESIS

Understanding interfacial phenomena at elevated pressure is crucial to the design of a variety of processes, modeling important systems, and interpreting interfacial thermodynamics. While many previous studies have offered insight into these areas, current techniques have inherent drawbacks that limit equilibrium measurements.

EXPERIMENTS

In this work, we adapt the ambient microtensiometer of Alvarez and co-workers into a high pressure microtensiometer (HPMT) capable of experimentally quantifying a wide range of interfacial phenomena at elevated pressures. Particularly, the HPMT uses a microscale spherical interface pinned to the tip of a capillary to directly measure surface tension via the Laplace equation. The stream of microscale bubbles used to pressurize the system ensures quick saturation of the bulk phases prior to conducting measurements. The HPMT is validated by measuring the surface tension of air-water as a function of pressure. We then measure the surface tension of CO₂ vapor and water as a function of pressure, finding lower equilibrium surface tension values than originally reported in the literature.

FINDINGS

This work both introduces further development of a useful experimental technique for probing interfacial phenomena at elevated pressures and demonstrates the importance of establishing bulk equilibrium to measure surface tension. The true equilibrium state of the CO₂-water surface has a lower tension than previously reported. We hypothesize that this discrepancy is likely due to the long diffusion timescales required to ensure saturation of the bulk fluids using traditional tensiometry. Thus we argue that previously reported elevated pressure measurements were performed at non-equilibrium conditions, putting to rest a long standing discrepancy in the literature. Our measurements establish an equilibrium pressure isotherm for the pure CO₂-water surface that will be essential in analyzing surfactant transport at elevated pressures.

Reversible Stability of Emulsion and Polymer Latex Controlled by Oligochitosan and CO₂

The addition of salt to a colloid solution ensures that emulsions can be easily separated into two phases and that polymer latexes can be coagulated. The switchable stability of emulsions and polymer latexes would improve the properties for their current applications. A switchable process of salt addition can be achieved using CO₂ and switchable water, and it is a novel, benign approach to achieving a switchable ionic strength in an aqueous solution. However, the problem associated with switchable water is that its additives are all synthetic tertiary amines, most of which are harmful to human beings and the environment. Oligochitosan, as a natural product, can also be used as a switchable water additive. In this paper, a new switchable water system using oligochitosan to change the ionic strength was explored for use in several potential industrial applications. The conductivity of the aqueous solution of oligochitosan (0.2 wt.%) was switched from 0.2 to 331 μS/cm through the addition and removal of CO₂. Oligochitosan and CO₂ were successfully utilized to reversibly break a crude oil emulsion. Polystyrene (PS) latexes could also be reversibly destabilized; the zeta potential of the PS latex changed between -5.8 and -45.2 mV in the absence and presence of CO₂ after oligochitosan was dissolved in the PS latex. The use of oligochitosan is a more environmentally friendly means for reversibly separating colloid solutions.

A conventional surfactant becomes CO2-responsive in the presence of switchable water additives

We have developed a new benign means of reversibly breaking emulsions and latexes by using "switchable water", an aqueous solution of switchable ionic strength. The conventional surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is not normally stimuli-responsive when CO2 is used as the stimulus but becomes CO2 -responsive or "switchable" in the presence of a switchable water additive. In particular, changes in the air/water surface tension and oil/water interfacial tension can be triggered by addition and removal of CO2 . A switchable water additive, N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA), was found to be an effective and efficient additive for the reversible reduction of interfacial tension and can lower the tension of the dodecane/water interface in the presence of SDS surfactant to ultra-low values at very low additive concentrations. Switchable water was successfully used to reversibly break an emulsion containing SDS as surfactant, and dodecane as organic liquid. Also, the addition of CO2 and switchable water can result in aggregation of polystyrene (PS) latexes; the later removal of CO2 neutralizes the DMEA and decreases the ionic strength allowing for the aggregated PS latex to be redispersed and recovered in its original state.
