Adsorption and desorption of dimethyl phthalate on carbon nanotubes in aqueous copper(II) solution

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes enhance the toxicity effects of dibutyl phthalate on early life stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio): Research in physiological, biochemical and molecular aspects

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are widely used as plasticizers. PAEs are ubiquitous in natural water bodies, with dibutyl phthalate (DBP) being one of the most common PAEs. DBP is prone to leaching or migration into the environment, posing serious health and environmental risks. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely used in various fields with the rapid development of nanotechnology. CNTs could alter the environmental behavior and toxicity of co-existing pollutants. CNTs have been shown to rapidly adsorb PEAs. However, current knowledge about the effects of CNTs on DBP toxicity is limited. Here we show that the toxic effects of single and combined exposure to DBP (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 mg/L) and different CNTs (MWCNTs/MWCNTs-COOH, 0.5 mg/L) on the early growth stage of zebrafish. The results suggested that a significant increase in heart rate and heart malformation rate was observed after co-exposure of DBP and MWCNTs/MWCNTs-COOH (p < 0.05). Furthermore, combined exposure increased antioxidant enzyme activity during early developmental stages in zebrafish (p < 0.05). The qRT-PCR results revealed that DBP and MWCNTs/MWCNTs-COOH co-exposure significantly interfered with the expression of genes related to oxidative stress, energy metabolism, development of cardiac function, and apoptosis (p < 0.05). In addition, for oxidative stress and cardiotoxicity, MWCNTs/MWCNTs-COOH aggravated the toxic effects of 0.5 mg/L DBP on embryos/larvae. The metabolomics results showed that co-exposure mitigated the disturbance of amino acid metabolism mediated by single DBP exposure. In general, MWCNTs/MWCNTs-COOH increased the impact of DBP in the early developmental stages of zebrafish. This study provides new insights into the toxicology of early developmental stages of aquatic organisms exposed to co-exist pollutants of DBP and CNTs.

Phthalates removal from wastewater by different methods - a review

Phthalate esters are commonly used as plasticizers to improve the durability and workability of polymeric materials, locating and identifying them in various contexts has become a major challenge. Because of their ubiquitous use in plastic packaging and personal care items, as well as their tendency to leach out of these materials, phthalates have been detected in a variety of aquatic situations, including surface water, groundwater, drinking water, and wastewater. Phthalate esters have been shown to affect reproductive health and physical growth by disrupting the endocrine system. As a result, developing energy-efficient and effective technologies to eliminate these harmful substances from the atmosphere has become more important and urgent. This paper examines the existing techniques for treating phthalates and degradation mechanisms, as well as knowledge gaps and future research directions. These technologies include adsorption, electrochemical, photocatalysis, membrane filtration and microbial degradation. Adsorption and photo catalysis are the most widely used techniques for phthalate removal, according to the literature survey papers.

Enhancing oil removal from water by immobilizing multi-wall carbon nanotubes on the surface of polyurethane foam

A surface modification method was carried out to enhance the light crude oil sorption capacity of polyurethane foam (PUF) through immobilization of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) on the foam surface at various concentrations. The developed sorbent was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile elongation test. The results obtained from thermogravimetric and tensile elongation tests showed the improvement of thermal and mechanical resistance of surface-modified foam. The experimental data also revealed that the immobilization of MWCNT on PUF surface enhanced the sorption capacity of light crude oil and reduced water sorption. The highest oil removal capacity was obtained for 1 wt% MWCNT on PUF surface which was 21.44% enhancement in light crude oil sorption compared to the blank PUF. The reusability of surface modified PUF was determined through four cycles of chemical regeneration using petroleum ether. The adsorption of light crude oil with 30 g initial mass showed that 85.45% of the initial oil sorption capacity of this modified sorbent was remained after four regeneration cycles. Equilibrium isotherms for adsorption of oil were analyzed by the Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, and Redlich-Peterson models through linear and non-linear regression methods. Results of equilibrium revealed that Langmuir isotherm is the best fitting model and non-linear method is a more accurate way to predict the parameters involved in the isotherms. The overall findings suggested the promising potentials of the developed sorbent in order to be efficiently used in large-scale oil spill cleanup.

Adsorption/desorption and bioavailability of methamphetamine in simulated gastrointestinal fluids under the presence of multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Adsorption/desorption and desorption hysteresis of methamphetamine (MMA) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as well as bioavailability of MMA were studied in simulated gastrointestinal fluids and background fluids. Adsorption of MMA in near-neutral (weak alkaline) intestinal fluid was enhanced, while adsorption of MMA on CNTs in acid gastric fluid was suppressed. Desorption of MMA is divided into fast and slow stages, and fast desorption conducting in the gastric fluid lasted shortly and slow desorption occurred in intestinal fluid; pepsin can enhance the release of MMA in gastrointestinal system. While, the acidic condition in gastric fluid is the main factor which causes the release of MMA. The amount of MMA released from CNTs in different fluids follows the order gastric > background (pH = 2.0) > intestinal (fed) > intestinal (fasted) > background (pH = 7.5). These findings in the simulated gastrointestinal system suggest that the release of MMA from CNTs could be promoted by biomacromolecules (such as pepsin and bile salts in digestive tract); thus, the bioavailability of MMA is enhanced.
