Abstract
Separation and purification in organic solvents are indispensable procedures in pharmaceutical manufacturing. However, they still heavily rely on the conventional separation technologies of distillation and chromatography, resulting in high energy and massive solvent consumption. As an alternative, organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) offers the benefits of low energy consumption, low solid waste generation, and easy scale-up and incorporation into continuous processes. Thus, there is a growing interest in employing membrane technology in the pharmaceutical area to improve process sustainability and energy efficiency. This Review comprehensively summarizes the recent progress (especially the last 10 years) of organic solvent nanofiltration and its applications in the pharmaceutical industry, including the concentration and purification of active pharmaceutical ingredients, homogeneous catalyst recovery, solvent exchange and recovery, and OSN-assisted peptide/oligonucleotide synthesis. Furthermore, the challenges and future perspectives of membrane technology in pharmaceutical applications are discussed in detail.

Bioconjugation Strategy for Ceramic Membranes Decorated with Candida Antarctica Lipase B-Impact of Immobilization Process on Material Features. MATERIALS 2022; 15:ma15020671. [PMID: 35057388 PMCID: PMC8779185 DOI: 10.3390/ma15020671] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 11/25/2021] [Revised: 12/31/2021] [Accepted: 01/12/2022] [Indexed: 11/17/2022]
Abstract
A strategy for the bioconjugation of the enzyme Candida antarctica lipase B onto titania ceramic membranes with varied pore sizes (15, 50, 150, and 300 kDa) was successfully performed. The relationship between the membrane morphology, i.e.,the pore size of the ceramic support, and bioconjugation performance was considered. Owing to the dimension of the enzyme (~33 kDa), the morphology of the ceramics allowed (50, 150, and 300 kDa) or did not allow (15 kDa) the entrance of the enzyme molecules into the porous structure. Such a strategy made it possible to better understand the changes in the material (morphology) and physicochemical features (wettability, adhesiveness, and surface charge) of the samples, which were systematically examined. The silane functionalization and enzyme immobilization were accomplished via the covalent route. The samples were characterized after each stage of the modification, which was very informative from the material point of view. As a consequence of the modification, significant changes in the contact angle, roughness, adhesion, and zeta potential were observed. For instance, for the 50 kDa membrane, the contact angle increased from 29.1 ± 1.5° for the pristine sample to 72.3 ± 1.5° after silane attachment; subsequently, it was reduced to 57.2 ± 1.5° after the enzyme immobilization. Finally, the contact angle of the bioconjugated membrane used in the enzymatic process rose to 92.9 ± 1.5°. By roughness (Sq) controlling, the following amendments were noticed: for the pristine 50 kDa membrane, Sq = 1.87 ± 0.21 µm; after silanization, Sq = 2.33 ± 0.30 µm; after enzyme immobilization, Sq = 2.74 ± 0.26 µm; and eventually, after the enzymatic process, Sq = 2.37 ± 0.27 µm. The adhesion work of the 50 kDa samples was equal to 136.41 ± 2.20 mN m−1 (pristine membrane), 94.93 ± 2.00 mN m−1 (with silane), 112.24 ± 1.90 mN m−1 (with silane and enzyme), and finally, 69.12 ± 1.40 mN m−1 (after the enzymatic process). The materials and physicochemical features changed substantially, particularly after the application of the membrane in the enzymatic process. Moreover, the impact of ceramic material morphology on the zeta potential value is here presented for the first time. With an increase in the ceramic support cut-off, the amount of immobilized lipase rose, but the specific productivity was higher for membranes possessing smaller pores, owing to the higher grafting density. For the enzymatic process, two modes of accomplishment were selected, i.e., stirred-tank and cross-flow. The latter method was characterized by a much higher effectiveness, with a resulting productivity equal to 99.7 and 60.3 µmol h−1 for the 300 and 15 kD membranes, respectively.

Abstract
In this work, a new generation of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was prepared using eugenol (as hydrogen bond donor) and benzyltriethylammonium bromide, benzyltributylammonium bromide, benzyltriethylammonium chloride and benzyltributylammonium chloride (as hydrogen bond acceptor) in different molar ratios. These DESs were applied to vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction of Sudan dyes from food samples, followed by high-performance liquid chromatographic determination. The influencing parameters, including the type of DES, amount of DES, extraction time, solution pH and salt addition, were investigated and optimized. Under the optimized conditions, a linear range of 2-1000 ng mL-1 with determination coefficients of <0.999 was obtained. Limits of detection and limits of quantification were in the range of 0.5 to 1 ng mL-1 and 2 to 3 ng mL-1, respectively. The proposed method was successfully used in the determination of Sudan dyes in chili sauce, chili powder and ketchup, and satisfactory recoveries of between 89.9 and 119.3% were obtained, with relative standard deviations in the range of 0.1-6.8%. The proposed method is simple, green and efficient, and can be applied to determine Sudan dyes in complex matrices.

Abstract
Increasing demand for water and energy has emphasized the significance of energy-efficient anaerobic wastewater treatment; however, anaerobic effluents still containing a large portion of the total CH4 production are discharged to the environment without being utilized as a valuable energy source. Recently, gas–liquid membrane contactors have been considered as a promising technology to recover such dissolved methane from the effluent due to their attractive characteristics such as high specific mass transfer area, no flooding at high flow rates, and low energy requirement. Nevertheless, the development and further application of membrane contactors were still not fulfilled due to their inherent issues such as membrane wetting and fouling, which lower the CH4 recovery efficiency and thus net energy production. In this perspective, the topics in membrane contactors for dissolved CH4 recovery are discussed in the following order: (1) operational principle, (2) potential as waste-to-energy conversion system, and (3) technical challenges and recent efforts to address them. Then, future efforts that should be devoted to advancing gas–liquid membrane contactors are suggested as concluding remarks.

Abstract
A highly effective method was developed to functionalize ceramic supports (Al2O3 powders and membranes) using newly synthesized spacer molecules. The functionalized materials were subsequently utilized for Candida antarctica lipase B enzyme immobilization. The objective is to systematically evaluate the impact of various spacer molecules grafted onto the alumina materials will affect both the immobilization of the enzymes and specific material surface properties, critical to enzymatic reactors performance. The enzyme loading was significantly improved for the supports modified with shorter spacer molecules, which possessed higher grafting effectiveness on the order of 90%. The specific enzyme activity was found to be much higher for samples functionalized with longer modifiers yielding excellent enantioselectivity >97%. However, the enantiomeric ratio of the immobilized lipase was slightly lower in the case of shorter spacer molecules.

Abstract
Understanding the corrosion inhibition behavior of super-amphiphobic coating is important to ensure practicability in the real application. 2 layers system of super-amphiphobic coating was successfully developed using functionalized nano-Al2O3 incorporated in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). This study investigates the effect of different amount of functionalizing agent on the coating’s repellency and its relationship toward the corrosion inhibition behavior. We found that a higher amount of fluoroalkylsilane (FAS) led to a decreased in repellency of both water and oil. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis suggests that the synergetic effect between super-hydrophobicity, longer diffusion path, and barrier effect; enhanced the corrosion resistance. Although the coatings demonstrate similar behavior, the most superhydrophobic/amphiphobic coating C1 offers the highest corrosion protection.

Abstract
The understanding and design of wetting-transport and wetting-charge-transport interplay in nanometer-sized pores is a still not fully understood key step in improving nanopore transport-related applications. A control of mesopore wettability accompanied by pore filling and ionic mesopore accessibility analysis is expected to deliver major insights into this interplay of nanoscale pore wetting and transport. For a systematic understanding, we demonstrate a gradual adjustment of nanopore ionic accessibility by gradually tuning silica nanopore wettability using chemical vapor phase deposition of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl dimethylchlorosilane. The mutual influence of wetting on liquid imbibition, condensation, and molecular transport as well as on heat transfer were studied by ellipsometry, cyclic voltammetry and boiling experiments, respectively. A multi-methodical analytic approach was used to directly couple wetting properties of mesoporous silica thin films to ionic mesopore accessibility allowing us to determine two different ion transport mechanisms based on three defined wetting regimes as well as a threshold hydrophobicity suppressing pore accessibility. Furthermore, boiling experiments showed a clear increase in nucleation site density upon changing the wettability of the mesoporous surfaces from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. Hence, these results provide insights into the complex interplay of pore wall functionalization, wetting, and charge-dependent nanopore properties.

Abstract
For the fulfilment of increasing global demand and associated challenges related to the supply of clean-and-safe water, PV has been considered as one of the most attractive and promising areas in desalinating salty-water of varied salinities. In pervaporative desalination, the sustainability, endurance, and structural features of membrane, along with operating parameters, play the dominant roles and impart paramount impact in governing the overall PV efficiency. Indeed, polymeric- and organic-membranes suffer from several drawbacks, including inferior structural stability and durability, whereas the fabrication of purely inorganic membranes is complicated and costly. Therefore, recent development on the high-performance and cost-friendly PV membrane is mostly concentrated on synthesizing composite- and NCP-membranes possessing the advantages of both organic- and inorganic-membranes. This review reflects the insights into the physicochemical properties and fabrication approaches of different classes of PV membranes, especially composite- and NCP-membranes. The mass transport mechanisms interrelated to the specialized structural features have been discussed. Additionally, the performance potential and application prospects of these membranes in a wide spectrum of desalination and wastewater treatment have been elaborated. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives have been identified in developing and scaling up different high-performance membranes suitable for broader commercial applications.

Abstract
Processes based on non-thermal plasma (NTP) for indoor air treatment inevitably lead to the formation of toxic by-products such as ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Adding a step of heterogeneous catalysis in series with NTP could allow for the decomposition of the by-products. Therefore, different catalysts were developed based on transition metal oxides, such as NiOx, CoOx and MnOx with different weight percentage 1, 5 and 10wt.%, deposited on a γ-Al2O3 support. The O3 removal efficiency (ORE) and the NOx removal efficiency (NRE) were very encouraging in dry air: about 65% and 80%, respectively, by using 2g 5wt.% MnOx/Al2O3 catalyst under the experimental conditions. However, strongly negative effects of relative humidity (RH) on the catalytic decomposition performance were observed. To overcome this limitation, the catalyst surface was modified to make it hydrophobic using a cost-effective chemical grafting method. This treatment consisted in impregnating the 5wt.% MnOx/Al2O3 catalyst with different trichloro(alkyl)silanes (TCAS). The effects of different linker lengths and amounts of TCAS for the hydrophobicity and the decomposition performance of surface-modified catalysts under humid conditions were investigated. Our results show that the surface-modified catalyst with the shortest linker and 0.25mmol/gcat of modifying agent represents the best catalytic decomposition performance for O3. Its ORE is 41% at 60% RH, which is twice that of the non-modified catalyst.

Abstract
It has been a big challenge to separate oil slicks from oil-polluted water sources efficiently and in an environmentally friendly way. Three-dimensional (3D) hydrophobic and superoleophilic materials have great potential in water separation continually. In this study, we developed a facile two-step strategy for fixing functionalized nanoparticles on 3D complex macroscopic surfaces. By using commercial glue to immobilize different types of nanoparticles on the surfaces of various 3D objects, superhydrophobic copper foam, cotton wool, and polyurethane (PU) sponge with strong stability and excellent performance were prepared. Owing to flexible fixing with the glue, the prepared PU sponge remained superhydrophobic after 950 mechanical compression cycles, 250 cycles of absorption/squeezing, or soaking in n-dodecane for 60 h. The prepared PU sponge was applied to the rapid absorption of clean oil on a water surface, and the feasibility of separating mixed oil through capillary separation of cavernous bodies was examined. Furthermore, the method for loading nanoparticles onto a 3D structure can be used with many self-cleaning, flexible electrodes and catalysts.

Abstract
Four main tasks were presented: (i) ceramic membrane functionalization (TiO2 5 kDa and 300 kDa), (ii) extended material characterization (physicochemistry and tribology) of pristine and modified ceramic samples, (iii) evaluation of chemical and mechanical stability, and finally (iv) assessment of membrane efficiency in vacuum membrane distillation applied for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal from water. Highly efficient molecular grafting with four types of perfluoroalkylsilanes and one nonfluorinated agent was developed. Materials with controllable tribological and physicochemical properties were achieved. The most meaningful finding is associated with the applicability of fluorinated and nonfluorinated grafting agents. The results of contact angle, hysteresis of contact angle, sliding angle, and critical surface tension as well as Young's modulus, nanohardness, and adhesion force for grafting by these two modifiers are comparable. This provides insight into the potential applicability of environmental friendly hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces. The achieved hydrophobic membranes were very effective in the removal of VOCs (butanol, methyl-tert-butyl ether, and ethyl acetate) from binary aqueous solutions in vacuum membrane distillation. The correlation between membrane effectiveness and separated solvent polarity was compared in terms of material properties and resistance to the wetting (kinetics of wetting and in-depth liquid penetration). Material properties were interpreted considering Zisman theory and using Kao diagram. The significant influence of surface chemistry on the membrane performance was noticed (5 kDa, influence of hydrophobic nanolayer and separation controlled by solution-diffusion model; 300 kDa, no impact of surface chemistry and separation controlled by liquid-vapor equilibrium).

Abstract
The combination of microscopic (atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy) and goniometric (static and dynamic measurements) techniques, and surface characterization (surface free energy determination, critical surface tension, liquid entry pressure, hydraulic permeability) was implemented to discuss the influence of perfluoroalkylsilanes structure and grafting time on the physicochemistry of the created hydrophobic surfaces on the titania ceramic membranes of 5 kD and 300 kD. The impact of molecular structure of perfluoroalkylsilanes modifiers (possessing from 6 to 12 carbon atoms in the fluorinated part of the alkyl chain) and the time of the functionalization process in the range of 5 to 35 h was studied. Based on the scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, it was found that the localization of grafting molecules depends on the membrane pore size (5 kD or 300 kD). In the case of 5 kD titania membranes, modifiers are attached mainly on the surface and only partially inside the membrane pores, whereas, for 300 kD membranes, the perfluoroalkylsilanes molecules are present within the whole porous structure of the membranes. The application of 4 various types of PFAS molecules enabled for interesting observations and remarks. It was explained how to obtain ceramic membrane surfaces with controlled material (contact angle, roughness, contact angle hysteresis) and separation properties. Highly hydrophobic surfaces with low values of contact angle hysteresis and low roughness were obtained. These surfaces possessed also low values of critical surface tension, which means that surfaces are highly resistant to wetting. This finding is crucial in membrane applicability in separation processes. The obtained and characterized hydrophobic membranes were subsequently applied in air-gap membrane distillation processes. All membranes were very efficient in MD processes, showing good transport and selective properties (∼99% of NaCl salt rejection). Depending on the membrane pore size and used modifiers, the permeate flux was in the range of 0.5-4.5 kg·m(-2)·h(-1) and 0.3-4.2 kg·m(-2)·h(-1) for 5 kD and 300 kD membranes, respectively.

Functionalization of Ceramic Metal Oxide Powders and Ceramic Membranes by Perfluoroalkylsilanes and Alkylsilanes Possessing Different Reactive Groups: Physicochemical and Tribological Properties. Abstract
The functionalization of ceramic materials, metal oxide powders (TiO2 and ZrO2), and ceramic membranes (5 kD TiO2 and 300 kD TiO2) was performed and thoroughly discussed. The objective of the functionalization was to change the natively hydrophilic character to the hydrophobic. The hydrophilic character of the ceramics generates limitations in wider application of such materials. Material functionalization was performed using perfluoroalkylsilanes and trifunctional(octyl)silanes possessing three different reactive functional groups: -Cl, -OMe, and -OEt. The characterization of functionalized metal oxide powders and ceramic membranes was assessed by a combination of various analytical methods and techniques: NMR, TGA, HR-TEM, FT-IR, SEM-EDX, AFM, and contact goniometry. The impact of molecular structure of grafting agents (type of reactive group), time of functionalization process (5-15 min), and type of membrane morphology on the material, physicochemical, and tribological properties was studied. Effectiveness of hydrophobization was confirmed by HR-TEM technique. The thickness of the attached hydrophobic nanolayer on the surface of ceramics was around 2.2 nm. It was found that the stable hydrophobic surfaces were obtained by functionalization with both fluorinated and nonfluorinated modifiers. The materials modified with perfluoroalkylsilanes (FC6OEt3) and trichloro(octyl)silanes (C6Cl3) during 15 min hydrophobization possess comparable properties: contact angle (CA) equal to 130° and 133°; roughness RMS of 10.2 and 12 nm; adhesive force of 4.1 and 5.7 nN; and Young modulus of 135 and 130 GPa, respectively. The relation between hydrophobicity level and ceramic membrane roughness was discussed applying the Kao diagram concept. (29)Si NMR results show that type of modifier has an important influence on grafting efficiency and on the mode of the grafting molecules attachment. In case of grafting with n-octyltrichlorosilane (C6OCl3) and n-octyltrimethoxysilane (C6OMe3), an increase of lateral polymerization across the octylsilane layer was observed.

Abstract
Hydrophobic titania ceramic membranes (300 kD) were prepared by grafting of C6F13C2H4Si(OC2H5)3 and C12F25C2H4Si(OC2H5)3 molecules and thus applied in membrane distillation (MD) process of NaCl solutions. Grafting efficiency and hydrophobicity were evaluated by contact angle measurement, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, and liquid entry pressure measurement of water. Desalination of NaCl solutions was performed using the modified hydrophobic membranes in air gap MD (AGMD) and direct contact MD (DCMD) processes in various operating conditions. High values of NaCl retention coefficient (>99%) were reached. The permeate fluxes were in the range 231-3692 g·h(-1)·m(-2), depending on applied experimental conditions. AGMD mode appeared to be more efficient showing higher fluxes and selectivity in desalination. Overall mass transfer coefficients (K) for membranes tested in AGMD were constant over the investigated temperature range. However, K values in DCMD increased at elevated temperature. The hydrophobic layer was also stable after 4 years of exposure to open air.
