Microwave-assisted and conventional hydrothermal synthesis of ordered mesoporous silicas with P-containing functionalities

Advances in Microwave Synthesis of Nanoporous Materials

Usually, porous materials are synthesized by using conventional electric heating, which can be energy- and time-consuming. Microwave heating is commonly used in many households to quickly heat food. Microwave ovens can also be used as powerful devices in the synthesis of various porous materials. The microwave-assisted synthesis offers a simple, fast, efficient, and economic way to obtain many of the advanced nanomaterials. This review summarizes the recent achievements in the microwave-assisted synthesis of diverse groups of nanoporous materials including silicas, carbons, metal-organic frameworks, and metal oxides. Microwave-assisted methods afford highly porous materials with high specific surface areas (SSAs), e.g., activated carbons with SSA ≈3100 m² g^-1 , metal-organic frameworks with SSA ≈4200 m² g^-1 , covalent organic frameworks with SSA ≈2900 m² g^-1 , and metal oxides with relatively small SSA ≈300 m² g^-1 . These methods are also successfully implemented for the preparation of ordered mesoporous silicas and carbons as well as spherically shaped nanomaterials. Most of the nanoporous materials obtained under microwave irradiation show potential applications in gas adsorption, water treatment, catalysis, energy storage, and drug delivery, among others.

Recent Progress of Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Silica Materials

Microwaves are a source of energy of great interest for chemical synthesis. Among nanomaterials, few are as versatile as silica—it forms mesoporous materials and nanoparticles, it can be incorporated as shells or loaded in composites, it can also be functionalized. Despite the relevant properties of silica, and the advantages of the use of microwave as energy source, its use in silica-based materials is not frequent. We report herein a compilation of the research results published in the last 10 years of microwave assisted synthesis of silica based materials. This review includes examples of mesoporous materials for waste removal, catalysis, drug release, and gas adsorption applications, together with examples based in the optimization of the synthesis conditions. In the case of non-porous materials, examples of analytical applications, coating of metallic nanoparticles, and SiO_x-C materials have been collected.

Synthesis and characterization of sulfur-containing hybrid materials based on sodium silicate

An original method for the one-stage synthesis of sulfur-containing silica of SBA-15 type is developed and described. Instead of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) typically used as a source of silica, the inexpensive sodium metasilicate has been applied in our method. The mesoporous silica material was first functionalized with thiol groups then oxidized by concentrated nitric acid to produce sulfonic groups. The samples obtained possess developed specific surface area (S_sp = 320–675 m² g⁻¹) and porous structure with an effective pore diameter of 3.5–5.7 nm. The orderliness of the structure and presence of surface sulfur-containing acidic groups of various natures in the synthesized materials were determined using XRD, TEM, N₂ adsorption, conductivity and potentiometric titration methods. Based on the results of the measurements of the zeta potential vs. pH and electrolyte concentration, conclusions about the electro-surface properties and aggregation stability of sample dispersion have been drawn. The obtained samples are environmentally-friendly and could be used in green chemistry.

Synthesis of enhanced phosphonic functional groups mesoporous silica for uranium selective adsorption from aqueous solutions

Enhanced phosphonic functional group (PFG)-based mesoporous silicas (MSs) were synthesized by hydrothermal method for uranium [U(VI)] selective adsorption from aqueous solutions. Considering that PFGs are directly related to U(VI) adsorption, the main idea of this research was to synthesize enhanced PFG-MSs and consequently enhance U(VI) adsorption. We synthesized two kinds of MSs based on acetic and phosphoric acids at weakly acidic pH, which allows high-loading phosphonic functionality. The main sodium and phosphonic functionality sources were sodium metasilicate and diethylphosphatoethyltriethoxysilane (DPTS). Adsorption experiment results exhibit enhanced U(VI) adsorption capacity from 55.75 mg/g to 207.6 mg/g for acetic and phosphoric acids, respectively. This finding was due to the enhancement of PFGs by phosphoric acids. The highest adsorption selectivity was 79.82% for U(VI) among the six different elements, including Pb, As, Cu, Mo, Ni, and K. Structural characterization of the samples was performed by Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis methods. Element concentrations were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Several parameters affecting adsorption capacity, including pH, contact time, initial U(VI) concentration and solution volume, and adsorbent concentration, were also investigated.

Adsorption of Lead Ions from Aqueous Phase on Mesoporous Silica with P-Containing Pendant Groups

Mesoporous silica materials with hydroxyphosphatoethyl pendant groups (POH-MS) were obtained by a two-step process: (1) block copolymer Pluronic P123-templated synthesis of mesoporous silica with diethylphosphatoethyl groups (DP-MS) by co-condensation of diethylphosphatoethyl triethoxysilane (DPTS) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) under acidic conditions and (2) conversion of diethylphosphatoethyl into hydroxyphosphatoethyl groups upon suitable treatment with concentrated hydrochloric acid. The DP-MS samples obtained by using up to 20% of DPTS featured hexagonally ordered mesopores, narrow pore size distribution and high specific surface area. Conversion of DP-MS to mesoporous silica with hydroxyphosphatoethyl groups (POH-MS) resulted in the enlargement of the specific surface area, total porosity, and microporosity. High affinity of hydroxyphosphatoethyl groups toward lead ions (Pb(2+)) makes the POH-MS materials attractive sorbents for lead ions, which is reflected by high lead uptake reaching 272 mg of Pb(2+) per gram of POH-MS. This study shows that the simple and effective co-condensation strategy assures high loading of P-containing groups showing high affinity toward lead ions, which is of great importance for removal of highly toxic lead ions from contaminated water.
