Uptake fluoride from water by caclined Mg-Al-CO3 hydrotalcite: Mg/Al ratio effect on its structure, electrical affinity and adsorptive property

Phosphogypsum-Modified Vinasse Shell Biochar as a Novel Low-Cost Material for High-Efficiency Fluoride Removal

In this study, vinasse shell biochar (VS) was easily modified with phosphogypsum to produce a low-cost and novel adsorbent (MVS) with excellent fluoride adsorption performance. The physicochemical features of the fabricated materials were studied in detail using SEM, EDS, BET, XRD, FTIR, and XPS techniques. The adsorption experiments demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of fluoride by MVS was greatly enhanced compared with VS, and the adsorption capacity increased with the pyrolysis temperature, dosage, and contact time. In comparison to chloride and nitrate ions, sulfate ions significantly affected adsorption capacity. The fluoride adsorption capacity increased first and then decreased with increasing pH in the range of 3-12. The fluoride adsorption could be perfectly fitted to the pseudo-second-order model. Adsorption isotherms matched Freundlich and Sips isotherm models well, giving 290.9 mg/g as the maximum adsorption capacity. Additionally, a thermodynamic analysis was indicative of spontaneous and endothermic processes. Based on characterization and experiment results, the plausible mechanism of fluoride adsorption onto MVS was proposed, mainly including electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, precipitation, and hydrogen bonds. This study showed that MVS could be used for the highly efficient removal of fluoride and was compatible with practical applications.

Design of hydrotalcite and biopolymers entrapped tunable cerium organic cubic hybrid material for superior fluoride adsorption

The excess fluoride in drinking water is serious risk which leads to fluorosis. The adsorption method is facile route for defluoridation studies. Hybrid adsorbent possesses unique advantages like high surface area and high stability has been employed for water treatment. In the present work, hydrotalcite (HT) fabricated Ce-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) bridged with biopolymers (alginate and chitosan) namely HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads was developed and employed towards fluoride removal in batch mode. The fabricated HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS beads were analyzed by DTA, FTIR, SEM, EDAX, TGA and XRD studies. Besides, FTIR and EDAX proved the affinity of HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads on fluoride was majorly attributed by electrostatic interaction, ion-exchange and complexation mechanism. To include detail insight into adsorption route; the kinetics, thermodynamic and isotherm studies were investigated for fluoride adsorption. The equilibrium data of HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads for fluoride adsorption was fitted with Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic investigation results demonstrated that the fluoride adsorption was spontaneous with endothermic nature. The regeneration and field investigation results revealed that the developed HT-CeMOFs@Alg-CS cubic hybrid beads are reusable and more apt at field environment.

Efficient preparation of red mud-based geopolymer microspheres (RM@GMs) and adsorption of fluoride ions in wastewater

In this paper, red mud-based geopolymer microspheres (RM@GMs: 75-150 µm) was prepared by dispersion-suspension-solidification method to remove fluoride ions (F^-). It was found that RM@GMs still had good mechanical properties and better F^- removal effect at RM content reached 80 % of the total solid mass. The batch adsorption experiment results showed that the F^- concentration (< 1.5 mg/L) reached the drinking water standard in 45 min at pH = 2 and RM@GMs dosage was 1 g/L. RM@GMs showed maximum adsorption capacity of 76.57 mg/g for F^-, and the adsorption kinetics and isotherm fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. RM@GMs exhibited excellent dynamic separation effect at the flow rate of 4 mL/min and column height of 1 cm. In addition, RM@GMs had good selectivity for F^- in the competitive adsorption experiments and followed an order of: PO₄^3- > > SO₄^2- ≈ NO₃^- ≈ Cl^-. In real seawater, natural surface water and tap water, RM@GMs still had excellent F^- removal effect. The adsorption mechanism revealed that RM@GMs removed F^- mainly through the synergistic effect of adsorption and ion exchange. Therefore, this paper provides the potential value for the large-scale utilization of RM in the application of F^--containing wastewater.

A flow injection procedure using Layered Double Hydroxide for on line pre-concentration of fluoride

This work showed a flow system designed with solenoid valves for preconcentration of fluoride using SPADNS method in water samples. The analyte was preconcentrated in a mini-column coated with Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) used as adsorbent. Then, the fluoride ions were eluted with 0.5molL^-1 sodium hydroxide and determined by spectrophotometry. The variables that affect the system such adsorbent mass, type of eluent, solutions flow rate, reagent concentration and pH effect were critically evaluated. Under optimized conditions, the detection limit, coefficient of variation, linear range and preconcentration factor were estimated at 15µgL^-1 (99.7% confidence level), 0.8% (500µgL^-1, n = 10), 50-500µgL^-1 and 10, respectively. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by analysis of ALPHA APS 1076 (Simulated Rain Water) certified material, the values were not significantly different at a 95% level of confidence. The method was applied for fluoride determination in water samples and the levels found were below the maximum values established by Brazilian environmental and health legislations.

Iron–silver oxide nanoadsorbent synthesized by co-precipitation process for fluoride removal from aqueous solution and its adsorption mechanism

Fe–Ag magnetic binary oxide nanoparticles (Fe–Ag MBON) are prepared with co-precipitation of ferric and ferrous chloride solutions, and used for the adsorption of fluoride from aqueous solution.
