Preparation of modified Mg/Al layered double hydroxide in saccharide system and its application to remove As(V) from glucose solution

Simultaneous adsorption of chromate and arsenate onto ferrihydrite/alginate composite beads: Competition and mechanism

Ferrihydrite is an effective adsorbent of chromate and arsenate. In order to gain insight into the application of ferrihydrite in water treatment, macroporous alginate/ferrihydrite beads, synthesized using two different methods (internal and encapsulation processes), were used in this work. The properties of the ferrihydrite were assessed using various techniques, including X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory, and zetametry. The results showed that the specific surface area of the ferrihydrite was 242 m2/g, and the PZC was pH8. The kinetic and isotherm adsorption properties of the ferrihydrite were evaluated in this study. The results indicate that the pseudo second-order and Freundlich models accurately describe the kinetic and isotherm adsorption properties of chromates and arsenates. For chromate removal, ferrihydrite exhibited a relatively high adsorption capacity (40.7 mgCr/g) compared to other adsorbents. However, the arsenate adsorption capacity of MFHB-SI (140.8 mgAs/g) was shown to be the most optimal. The internal synthesis process was suitable for arsenate retention due to the resulting arsenate precipitation. The competitive adsorption analyses indicated that the presence of chromate does not limit the adsorption of arsenate. However, the presence of arsenate almost completely inhibits the adsorption of chromate when the arsenate concentration is above 50 mg/L, due to the precipitation reaction of arsenate.

Fabrication of Effective Nanohybrids Based on Organic Species, Polyvinyl Alcohol and Carbon Nanotubes in Addition to Nanolayers for Removing Heavy Metals from Water under Severe Conditions

Industrial water has a dual problem because of its strong acidic characteristics and the presence of heavy metals. Removing heavy metals from water in these severe conditions has special requirements. For this problem, an economic method was used for removing iron (Fe), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and manganese (Mn) with extremely acidic characteristics from water. This method depends on the preparation of nanohybrids through host–guest interactions based on nanolayered structures, organic species (stearic acid), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The formation of nanohybrids was confirmed using different techniques through the expansion of the interlayered spacing of the nanolayered structure from 0.76 nm to 1.60 nm, 1.40 nm and 1.06 nm. This nano-spacing is suitable for trapping and confining the different kinds of heavy metal. The experimental results indicated that the prepared nanohybrid was more effective than GreensandPlus, which is used on the market for purifying water. The high activity of the nanohybrid is obvious in the removal of both copper and nickel because the GreensandPlus was completely inactive for these heavy metals under severe conditions. Finally, these experimental results introduce new promising materials for purifying industrial water that can work under severe conditions.

Preparation and Adsorption Properties of Soybean Dreg/Hydrocalumite Composites

The application of biomass-based composites in the field of adsorption has attracted extensive attention. Herein, soybean dreg/hydrocalumite composites were prepared by in situ self-assembly from soybean dregs and applied to the adsorption of Congo Red (CR). The composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, and N₂ physical adsorption-desorption. The results showed that the adsorption property of soybean dregs/hydrocalumite for CR was better than that of soybean dregs or hydrocalumite. Effects of preparation and adsorption conditions on the adsorption of CR by soybean dregs/hydrocalumite were also investigated. The removal rate of soybean dregs/hydrocalumite (30%BD-LDH) prepared under the optimized conditions reached 97.4% with a 486.8 mg·g^-1 adsorption capacity. Also, the adsorption capacity of 30%BD-LDH was about 2.4 times and 3.0 times that of hydrocalumite and soybean dregs, respectively. In addition, the adsorption process of CR by 30%BD-LDH was more in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isothermal models.

Recent innovations in functionalized layered double hydroxides: Fabrication, characterization, and industrial applications

Layered Double Hydroxides (LDHs) are a group of hydrotalcite-like nano-sized materials with cationic layers and exchangeable interlayer anions. The wide range of divalent and trivalent cationic metals and anionic compounds are employed in the synthesis of LDH materials, which have improved their importance among the researchers. Because of their high anion exchange property, memory effect, tunable behavior, bio-friendly, simple preparation, and their affordability, these nano-materials are essentially interested today. Modification of LDHs improves their behaviours to make them appropriate in industrial fields, including biological, adsorbent, mechanical, optical, thermal, electrical fields, etc. This review has critically discussed the structural features, main properties, and also clarified the most important methods of modification and intercalation of LDH nano-materials. Moreover, some novel reported researches related to the successful modification of LDH materials have been characterized and briefly the advantages, disadvantages, and applications are presented in the industrial fields.

Arsenic removal from water/wastewater using layered double hydroxide derived adsorbents, a critical review

Arsenic pollution has become a worldwide environmental concern. Dangerous arsenic concentrations in natural waters threaten the health of millions of people, and this has received significant attention. Among the various technologies that have been developed for arsenic removal from water, the use of adsorption technology is considered to be a prevailing method, because the adsorption approach usually has high removal efficiency and the advantage of convenience of handling. In recent years, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have become prime candidates for arsenic removal, due to their hydrophilic nature and cationic layered structures. Research on arsenic removal using LDHs is mainly focused on (1) the influence of the synthesis method and composition of the LDH, (2) the influence of the particle size of the LDH, (3) the influence of the Mg/Al ratio in LDHs, (4) LDH-based hybrids and (5) the competition with other anions. This paper provides a review of the currently available literature focusing on arsenic removal using LDHs for the five parts mentioned above. In addition, based on this overview, a closing section will suggest research efforts for future work. It is expected that this review will provide a summary of the main research in this area, and will also shed light on the direction of future development.
