A sandwich-structured graphene-based composite: Preparation, characterization, and its adsorption behaviors for Congo red

Design, Synthesis and Adsorption Evaluation of Bio-Based Lignin/Chitosan Beads for Congo Red Removal

The morphology and intermolecular interaction are two of the most important factors in the design of highly efficient dye adsorbent in the industry. Millimeter-sized, bead-type, bio-based lignin/chitosan (Lig/CS) adsorbent was designed for the removal of Congo red (CR), based on the electrostatic attraction, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bonding, which were synthesized through the emulsification of the chitosan/lignin mixture followed by chemical cross-linking. The effects of the lignin/chitosan mass ratio, initial pH, temperature, concentration, and contact time on the adsorption were thoroughly investigated. The highest adsorption capacity (173 mg/g) was obtained for the 20 wt% Lig/CS beads, with a removal rate of 86.5%. To investigate the adsorption mechanism and recyclability, an evaluation of the kinetic model and an adsorption/desorption experiment were conducted. The adsorption of CR on Lig/CS beads followed the type 1 pseudo-second-order model, and the removal rate for CR was still above 90% at five cycles.

Study on the Adsorption Performance of Casein/Graphene Oxide Aerogel for Methylene Blue

Casein (CS) and graphene oxide (GO) were employed for the fabrication of a casein/graphene oxide (CS/GO) aerogel by vacuum freeze drying. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, surface area and micropore analysis (BET), and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the specific surface area, structure, thermal stability, and morphology of the CS/GO aerogel. The influence of experimental parameters such as the GO mass fraction in the aerogel, metering of the adsorbent, pH, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption capacity of the CS/GO aerogel on methylene blue (MB) was also investigated. According to Langmuir isotherm determination, the maximum removal rate of MB from the CS/GO aerogel was 437.29 mg/g when the temperature was 293 K and pH was 8. Through kinetic and thermodynamic studies, it is found that adsorption follows a pseudo-second-order reaction model and is also an exothermic and spontaneous process.

A sustainable and nondestructive method to high-throughput decolor Lycium barbarum L. polysaccharides by graphene-based nano-decoloration

Lycium barbarum L. polysaccharides (LBPs) with outstanding biological activities are of increasing interest. Traditional purification approaches are time-consuming and often involve toxic solvents that destroy the functionality and structure of polysaccharides. Herein, we report a sustainable and nondestructive strategy for purifying LBPs using graphene-based nano-decoloration. The amination of graphene oxide (GO) enables the resulted aminated reduced GO (NH₂-rGO) with abundant sp²-hybridized carbon domains, displaying high adsorption capacity toward pigments in crude polysaccharides. As such, within 5 min, NH₂-rGO can highly effectively and fast to decolor LBPs, with a high decoloration ratio of 98.72% and a high polysaccharides retention ratio of 95.62%. Importantly, compared with traditional decoloration methods, NH₂-rGO is nondestructive toward LBPs and has good reusability. Moreover, it exhibited widespread-use decoloration performance to decolor several common plant species. Overall, our proposed nano-decoloration approach is a general-purpose, sustainable, and nondestructive method to purify LBPs.

Poly(acryloyl hydrazide)-grafted cellulose nanocrystal adsorbents with an excellent Cr(VI) adsorption capacity

In this study, we prepared poly(acryloyl hydrazide) (PAH)-grafted cellulose nanocrystal (CNC-PAH) particles via the atom transfer radical polymerization method for application to Cr(VI) adsorption. The closely-packed PAH chains grafted on the cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) surface provide a high density of amine groups that can adsorb Cr(VI) through strong electrostatic, hydrogen bonding and chelating interactions. CNC-PAH exhibited the optimum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity at the solution pH = 3, where its electrostatic attraction with Cr(VI) was maximized. Cr(VI) was chemisorbed in CNC-PAH by following the Langmuir isotherm mechanism (homogeneous monolayer adsorption). The Cr(VI) adsorption kinetics of CNC-PAH was controlled predominantly by intra-particle diffusion resistance imparted by the PAH shell layer. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that Cr(VI) adsorption of CNC-PAH is a spontaneous and endothermic process. Importantly, CNC-PAH grafted with the higher M_w (∼50 kg mol^-1) PAH exhibited a rapid Cr(VI) adsorption rate and remarkably high Cr(VI) adsorption capacity (∼457.6 mg g^-1 at 298.15 K), exceeding those of previously reported adsorbents owing to its numerous Cr(VI)-adsorptive amine groups provided by the closely-packed grafted PAH polymers. Furthermore, CNC-PAH showed excellent reusability to maintain its high adsorption ability during repeated adsorption-desorption cycles owing to the covalently binding nature of the PAH polymers.

Simultaneous cationic Cu (II)‒anionic Sb (III) removal by NH2-Fe3O4-NTA core-shell magnetic nanoparticle sorbents synthesized via a facile one-pot approach

In this study, a regenerable magnetic core-shell nanoparticles NH₂-Fe₃O₄-NTA which include 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) crosslinked to Fe₃O₄ was developed by one-pot method for simultaneous removal of cationic and anionic metals. Another nanocomposite NH₂-Fe₃O₄-NTA_II was prepared by multi-step method for comparison. NH₂-Fe₃O₄-NTA had positive zeta potential values of 35.1-0.8 mV at pH 1.8-11.0, with the saturation magnetization and surface area up to 40.56 emu/g and 56.94 m²/g, respectively. The maximum sorption capacities of NH₂-Fe₃O₄-NTA for cationic Cu (II) and anionic Sb (III) were 55.56 and 51.07 mg/L, respectively, which were superior to that of NH₂-Fe₃O₄-NTA_II. Based on screening in terms of characterization and metal sorption capacity, NH₂-Fe₃O₄-NTA with a feasible synthesis scheme was chosen for further evaluation. The Cu (II) removal by NH₂-Fe₃O₄-NTA was favored with increasing pH, while the Sb (III) removal preferred low pH (2-3). Simultaneous sorption of Cu (II) and Sb (III) exhibited same removal performance with the sole sorption under high dosage (>1 g/L). In real wastewater applications of NH₂-Fe₃O₄-NTA, multiple metals in actual wastewater could be removed to well below the regulation levels. Nonspecific electrostatic interactions, inner-sphere complexation, ligand exchange, chelation and coordination complexation were responsible for Cu (II) and Sb (III) removal.

Superb adsorption capacity of biochar derived from leather shavings for Congo red

Research on biochar for removal of dyes has been a hot topic because of its excellent eco-friendly and economical properties. In this study, leather shavings biochar (LSB) with high adsorption capacity was prepared and tested with Congo red as a model dye for adsorption. The research results show that the as-prepared biochar exhibits a porous structure, with a high specific surface area (2365 m2 g-1), and it would be beneficial for removing Congo red from effluents. More interestingly, adsorption capacity of LSB for Congo red was enhanced by chromium compounds on the surface of biochar through chelation and electrostatic interactions. Chelation occured between the chromium compounds and amino groups of Congo red. Adsorption data for Congo red on the biochar were successfully described by Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second order kinetics model. Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of LSB at 30 °C reached 1916 mg g-1, which is much higher than that of conventional activated carbon (AC). Recycling experiment shows that LSB has a potential market for removing Congo red.

Functional reduced graphene oxide-based membranes with selective ion transport channels for zwitterionic ions separation based on the pH gradient

In this work, we report a method for the fabrication of a functional free-standing graphene membrane (FFGM) with high mechanical strength, enlarged interlayer spacing and ion channels for zwitterionic ions separation. To obtain the FFGM, the anionic dye Eosin Y (EY) was introduced into a graphene oxide (GO) and hydroquinone (HQ) mixture to prepare functional graphene-based membranes on Cu foil using simply a drop-casting method. In comparison with a GO membrane, the molar flux and the mechanical strength of the FFGM were dramatically increased. The FFGM was then equipped on custom-built glass reservoirs for zwitterionic amino acids (AAs) separation based on the inner pH gradient, which was formed by controlling H⁺ and OH^- (in the feed and receiver solution) migration in rGO/GO sheets via an external electric field. With the help of the inner pH gradient and external electric field, AAs could change their charge behaviors. The ionized AAs transport through the FFGM and finally separation was realized.

Magnetic graphene coated inorganic-organic hybrid nanocomposite for enhanced preconcentration of selected pesticides in tomato and grape

The new magnetic graphene based hybrid silica-N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (MG@SiO₂-TMSPED) nanocomposite was synthesized via sol-gel process, and used as an effective adsorbent in magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of three selected pesticides followed by gas chromatography micro-electron capture detection (GC-μECD). The adsorbent was characterized using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) techniques. The analytical validity of the developed method was evaluated under optimized conditions and the following figures of merit were obtained: linearity, 1-20μgkg^-1 with good determination coefficients (R²=0.995-0.999); limits of detection (LODs), 0.23-0.30μgkg^-1 (3×SD/m, n=3); and limits of quantitation (LOQ), 0.76-1.0μgkg^-1 (10×SD/m, n=3). The precision (RSD%) of the proposed MSPE method was studied based on intra-day (3.43-8.83%, n=3) and inter-day (6.68-8.37%, n=12) precisions. Finally, the adsorbent was applied to determination of pesticides in tomato and grape samples and good recoveries were obtained in the range from 82 to 113% (RSDs 5.1-8.1%, n=3).
