Concentration dependent morphological transition of nanostructured self-assembly towards hydrogelation seeding from micellar aggregates through stereochemically optimized H-bonding network of amino acid derived cationic amphiphiles

Innovative Microstructural Transformation upon CO2 Supercritical Conditions on Metal-Nucleobase Aerogel and Its Use as Effective Filler for HPLC Biomolecules Separation

This work contributes to enlightening the opportunities of the anisotropic scheme of non-covalent interactions present in supramolecular materials. It provides a top-down approach based on their selective disruption that herein has been employed to process a conventional microcrystalline material to a nanofibrillar porous material. The developed bulk microcrystalline material contains uracil-1-propionic acid (UPrOH) nucleobase as a molecular recognition capable building block. Its crystal structure consists of discrete [Cu(UPrO)₂ (4,4′-bipy)₂ (H₂ O)] (4,4′-bipy=4,4′-bipyridine) entities held together through a highly anisotropic scheme of non-covalent interactions in which strong hydrogen bonds involving coordinated water molecules provide 1D supramolecular chains interacting between them by weaker interactions. The sonication of this microcrystalline material and heating at 45 °C in acetic acid–methanol allows partial reversible solubilization/recrystallization processes that promote the cross-linking of particles into an interlocked platelet-like micro-particles metal–organic gel, but during CO₂ supercritical drying, the microcrystalline particles undergo a complete morphological change towards highly anisotropic nanofibers. This unprecedented top-down microstructural conversion provides a nanofibrillar material bearing the same crystal structure but with a highly increased surface area. Its usefulness has been tested for HPLC separation purposes observing the expected nucleobase complementarity-based separation.

Nontraditional Luminescent Molecular Aggregates Encapsulated by Wormlike Silica Nanoparticles for Latent Fingerprint Detection

The phenomenon of nontraditional luminescence has attracted wide attention and curiosity of researchers due to its inexplicable photoluminescence paradigm without aromatic or extended π-systems. The present work puts forward a neotype of a light-emitting nitrogenous small molecule, namely, N-stearoyl-hydroxyproline (L-C₁₆-Hyp), which could emit weak light in aggregation states through the restriction mechanism of intramolecular motion, exhibiting properties comparable to those of AIEgens. Using these molecular aggregates as anionic surfactant micelles to incorporate within the silica matrix, we prepared fluorescent nanoparticles (FL-NPs) by a one-pot method for expedient visualization of latent fingerprints (LFPs). The FL-NPs exhibit an excitation range from 335 to 365 nm, resulting in nontraditional luminescence observed between 410 and 440 nm. The enhanced luminescent FL-NPs may derive from the collective entities or assemblies of restricted L-C₁₆-Hyp, which can be reasonably explicated by an effect termed as cluster-triggered emission (CTE). Theoretical calculations demonstrated that this luminescence pattern belongs to partial charge transfer, which is mainly attributed to the close interaction between the tertiary amino and adjacent carboxyl in the L-C₁₆-Hyp structure. Moreover, some merits of FL-NPs, such as wormlike nanomorphology, stable photophysical properties, low toxicity, great adhesion to multiple substrates, easy to get raw material, an inexpensive, simple process, and rapid detection without any further modification or assistance, provide the feasibility of efficacious LFP detection. Overall, this study will provide insights into the design and application of luminescent materials with unconventional groups.

Lipoaminoacids Enzyme-Based Production and Application as Gene Delivery Vectors

Biosurfactant compounds have been studied in many applications, including biomedical, food, cosmetic, agriculture, and bioremediation areas, mainly due to their low toxicity, high biodegradability, and multifunctionality. Among biosurfactants, the lipoplexes of lipoaminoacids play a key role in medical and pharmaceutical fields. Lipoaminoacids (LAAs) are amino acid-based surfactants that are obtained from the condensation reaction of natural origin amino acids with fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives. LAA can be produced by biocatalysis as an alternative to chemical synthesis and thus become very attractive from both the biomedical and the environmental perspectives. Gemini LAAs, which are made of two hydrophobic chains and two amino acid head groups per molecule and linked by a spacer at the level of the amino acid residues, are promising candidates as both drug and gene delivery and protein disassembly agents. Gemini LAA usually show lower critical micelle concentration, interact more efficiently with proteins, and are better solubilising agents for hydrophobic drugs when compared to their monomeric counterparts due to their dimeric structure. A clinically relevant human gene therapy vector must overcome or avoid detect and silence foreign or misplaced DNA whilst delivering sustained levels of therapeutic gene product. Many non-viral DNA vectors trigger these defence mechanisms, being subsequently destroyed or rendered silent. The development of safe and persistently expressing DNA vectors is a crucial prerequisite for a successful clinical application, and it one of the main strategic tasks of non-viral gene therapy research.
