Engineered Clay-Polymer Composite for Biomedical Drug Delivery and Future Challenges: A Survey

Clay materials are widely used in drug delivery systems due to their unique characteristics. Montmorillonite is a major component of bentonite and it has a large surface area, better swelling capacity, and high adsorption capacity. The modification of natural bentonite could improve its sorption ability for new emerging applications. Recent advancements in the polymer-silicate composite have novel biomedical applications in drug delivery, tissue regeneration, wound healing, cancer therapy, enzyme immobilization, diagnostic and therapeutic devices, etc. Perspective view of the montmorillonite- polymer composite as a pharmaceutical carrier in drug delivery systems has been discussed in this review. Different types of modification of montmorillonite for the development of pharmaceutical formulations have also been documented. Many challenges in clay nanocomposite systems of polymer of natural/synthetic origin are yet to be explored in improving antimicrobial properties, mechanical strength, stimuli responsiveness, resistance to hydrolysis, etc. Drug interaction and binding capability, swelling of clay may be carried out for finding possible applications in monitoring delivery systems. Pharmaceutical properties of active drugs in the formulation could also be improved along with dissolution rate, solubility, and adsorption. The clay-incorporated polymeric drug delivery systems may be examined for a possible increase in swelling capacity and residence time after mucosal administration.

Organobeidellites for Removal of Anti-Inflammatory Drugs from Aqueous Solutions

Diclofenac (DC) and ibuprofen (IBU) are widely prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the consumption of which has rapidly increased in recent years. The biodegradability of pharmaceuticals is negligible and their removal efficiency by wastewater treatment is very low. Therefore, the beidelitte (BEI) as unique nanomaterial was modified by the following different surfactants: cetylpyridinium (CP), benzalkonium (BA) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium (TD) bromides. Organobeidellites were tested as potential nanosorbents for analgesics. The organobeidellites were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Infrared spectroscopy (IR), Thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) and scanning microscopy (SEM). The equilibrium concentrations of analgesics in solution were determined using UV-VIS spectroscopy. The intercalation of surfactants into BEI structure was confirmed both using XRD analysis due to an increase in basal spacing from 1.53 to 2.01 nm for BEI_BA and IR by decreasing in the intensities of bands related to the adsorbed water. SEM proved successful in the uploading of surfactants by a rougher and eroded organobeidellite surface. TG/DTA evaluated the decrease in dehydration/dehydroxylation temperatures due to higher hydrophobicity. The Sorption experiments demonstrated a sufficient sorption ability for IBU (55–86%) and an excellent ability for DC (over 90%). The maximum adsorption capacity was found for BEI_BA-DC (49.02 mg·g⁻¹). The adsorption according to surfactant type follows the order BEI_BA > BEI_TD > BEI_CP.

Nano-based smart pesticide formulations: Emerging opportunities for agriculture

The incorporation of nanotechnology as a means for nanopesticides is in the early stage of development. The main idea behind this incorporation is to lower the indiscriminate use of conventional pesticides to be in line with safe environmental applications. Nanoencapsulated pesticides can provide controlled release kinetics, while efficiently enhancing permeability, stability, and solubility. Nanoencapsulation can enhance the pest-control efficiency over extended durations by preventing the premature degradation of active ingredients (AIs) under harsh environmental conditions. This review is thus organized to critically assess the significant role of nanotechnology for encapsulation of AIs for pesticides. The smart delivery of pesticides is essential to reduce the dosage of AIs with enhanced efficacy and to overcome pesticide loss (e.g., due to leaching and evaporation). The future trends of pesticide nanoformulations including nanomaterials as AIs and nanoemulsions of biopesticides are also explored. This review should thus offer a valuable guide for establishing regulatory frameworks related to field applications of these nano-based pesticides in the near future.

Synthesis and characterization of an efficient and stable Al/Fe pillared clay catalyst for the catalytic wet air oxidation of phenol

A facile method for synthesizing Al/Fe pillared clays (PILCs) from natural bentonite clay, by using ultrasonic treatment during the aging and intercalation steps, has been established. Single metal (Fe-PILCs and Al-PILCs) and mixed metal (Al/Fe-PILCs, with varying compositions of the pillaring precursors) pillared clays were prepared and characterized with a combination of chemical and instrumental methods. The pillared clays were evaluated as catalysts in the catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of phenol and the mixed metal pillared clay catalysts, especially with an Al/Fe ratio of 3 : 1, were found to be highly active and stable, with superior properties such as surface areas, basal spacing, high porosity and thermal stability. The catalysts could also be reused several times without significant loss of activity. The results of the study show that Al/Fe-pillared clay catalysts are effective catalysts for the oxidation of phenol and removal of TOC in aqueous solutions. The main intermediate products in the CWAO of phenol were hydroquinone, pyrocatechol, and benzoquinone and oxalic, formic, malonic, oxalic, malonic and maleic acids.

Simultaneous adsorption of aflatoxin B1 and zearalenone by mono- and di-alkyl cationic surfactants modified montmorillonites

Organo-montmorillonites (OMts) modified with mono- and di-alkyl cationic surfactants were prepared to remove polar mycotoxin aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) and weak polar, hydrophobic mycotoxin zearalenone (ZER) simultaneously. The structural and surface properties of the prepared OMts were investigated. In vitro adsorption experiments were carried out to simulate the in vivo conditions of gastrointestinal tract of animals by a batch mode. The adsorption of AFB₁ and ZER in both single and binary-contaminate systems were investigated systematically. Both OMts showed super enhanced adsorption capacities towards AFB₁ and ZER whenever in single and binary-contaminate systems compared with raw Mt, indicating the effectiveness of the prepared OMts acted as mycotoxins adsorbents. DODAC-Mt showed a higher adsorption capacity towards AFB₁ and ZER than OTAB-Mt. The equilibrium data of AFB₁ on OMts were fitted satisfactorily with Freundlich and Linear models, suggesting the co-existence of different adsorption mechanism which were proposed to be ion-dipole interactions (between surfactant cations and carbonyl groups of AFB₁) and adsorption/partition mechanisms. The adsorption isotherms of OMts to ZER matched best with Linear models, implying the adsorption/partition mechanism. For simultaneous adsorption, the adsorption process of one mycotoxin was slightly affected by the presence of the other mycotoxin due to the requirement of partial same sorption sites. In addition, the solution pH had negligible influence on the adsorption process of OMts, meaning no desorption occurred when the adsorbents pass through from stomach to intestine as animal feed.
