Effect of electrostatic correlations on micelle formation

Electrostatics of soft (bio)interfaces: Corrections of mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann theory for ion size, dielectric decrement and ion-ion correlation

HYPOTHESIS

Electrostatics of soft (ion-permeable) (bio)particles (e.g. microorganisms, core/shell colloids) in aqueous electrolytes is commonly formulated by the mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann theory and integration of the charge contributions from electrolyte ions and soft material. However, the effects connected to the size of the electrolyte ions and that of the structural charges carried by the particle, to dielectric decrement and ion-ion correlations on soft interface electrostatics have been so far considered at the margin, despite the limits of the Gouy theory for condensed and/or multivalent electrolytes.

EXPERIMENTS

Accordingly, we modify herein the Poisson-Boltzmann theory for core/shell (bio)interfaces to include the aforementioned molecular effects considered separately or concomitantly. The formalism is applicable for poorly to highly charged particles in the thin electric double layer regime and to unsymmetrical multivalent electrolytes.

FINDINGS

Computational examples of practical interests are discussed with emphasis on how each considered molecular effect or combination thereof affects the interfacial potential distribution depending on size and valence of cations and anions, size of particle charges, length scale of ionic correlations and shell-to-Debye layer thickness ratio. The origins of here-evidenced pseudo-harmonic potential profile and ion size-dependent screening of core/shell particle charges are detailed. In addition, the existence and magnitude of the Donnan potential when reached in the shell layer are shown to depend on the excluded volumes of the electrolyte ions.

Correlations between the Type of Aggregates in the Bulk Phase and the Functionality and Safety of All-Purpose Cleaners

The article shows that the type and concentration of inorganic salt can be translated into the structure of the bulk phase and the performance properties of ecological all-purpose cleaners (APC). A base APC formulation was developed. Thereafter, two types of salt (sodium chloride and magnesium chloride) were added at various concentrations to obtain different structures in the bulk phase. The salt addition resulted in the formation of spherical micelles and-upon addition of more electrolyte-of aggregates having a lamellar structure. The formulations had constant viscosities (ab. 500 mPa·s), comparable to those of commercial products. Essential physical-chemical and performance properties of the four formulations varying in salt types and concentrations were evaluated. It was found that the addition of magnesium salt resulted in more favorable characteristics due to the surface activity of the formulations, which translated into adequately high wettability of the investigated hydrophobic surfaces, and their ability to emulsify fat. A decreasing relationship was observed in foaming properties: higher salt concentrations lead to worse foaming properties and foam stability of the solutions. For the magnesium chloride composition, the effect was significantly more pronounced, as compared to the sodium chloride-based formulations. As far as safety of use is concerned, the formulations in which magnesium salt was used caused a much lesser irritation compared with the other investigated formulations. The zein value was observed to decrease with increasing concentrations of the given type of salt in the composition.

Theory of Surface Forces in Multivalent Electrolytes

Aqueous electrolyte solutions containing multivalent ions exhibit various intriguing properties, including attraction between like-charged colloidal particles, which results from strong ion-ion correlations. In contrast, the classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory of colloidal stability, based on the Poisson-Boltzmann mean-field theory, always predicts a repulsive electrostatic contribution to the disjoining pressure. Here, we formulate a general theory of surface forces, which predicts that the contribution to the disjoining pressure resulting from ion-ion correlations is always attractive and can readily dominate over entropic-induced repulsions for solutions containing multivalent ions, leading to the phenomenon of like-charge attraction. Ion-specific short-range hydration interactions, as well as surface charge regulation, are shown to play an important role at smaller separation distances but do not fundamentally change these trends. The theory is able to predict the experimentally observed strong cohesive forces reported in cement pastes, which result from strong ion-ion correlations involving the divalent calcium ion.
