Prediction of coating thickness for polyelectrolyte multilayers via machine learning

Layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition method of polyelectrolytes is a versatile way of developing functional nanoscale coatings. Even though the mechanisms of LbL film development are well-established, currently there are no predictive models that can link film components with their final properties. The current health crisis has shown the importance of accelerated development of biomedical solutions such as antiviral coatings, and the implementation of machine learning methodologies for coating development can enable achieving this. In this work, using literature data and newly generated experimental results, we first analyzed the relative impact of 23 coating parameters on the coating thickness. Next, a predictive model has been developed using aforementioned parameters and molecular descriptors of polymers from the DeepChem library. Model performance was limited because of insufficient number of data points in the training set, due to the scarce availability of data in the literature. Despite this limitation, we demonstrate, for the first time, utilization of machine learning for prediction of LbL coating properties. It can decrease the time necessary to obtain functional coating with desired properties, as well as decrease experimental costs and enable the fast first response to crisis situations (such as pandemics) where coatings can positively contribute. Besides coating thickness, which was selected as an output value in this study, machine learning approach can be potentially used to predict functional properties of multilayer coatings, e.g. biocompatibility, cell adhesive, antibacterial, antiviral or anti-inflammatory properties.

Peeling back the layers: Investigating the effects of polyelectrolyte layering on surface structure and stability of oil-in-water nanoemulsions

HYPOTHESIS

Layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolytes is a useful technique for modifying surface functionalities. For drug delivery systems, alternating layers of biopolymers coat nanoemulsions, which house and protect the cargo until the time and destination of delivery. Here, we investigate molecular factors contributing to the stability and interfacial properties of nanoemulsions prepared by a co-adsorption of polymers poly(styrene sulfonate) and polyethylenimine (PEI), and surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide. We hypothesize the interplay between electrosteric and hydrophobic effects upon multi-polymer co-adsorption contributes to both macroscopic and molecular-level interfacial properties of nanoemulsions.

EXPERIMENTS

To probe interfacial layering properties, we use vibrational sum frequency scattering spectroscopy with ζ-potential measurements to determine the adsorptive behavior and molecular conformational arrangement of the polymer layers. Complementing these interfacial studies are dynamic light scattering experiments measuring the nanoemulsion size distribution and polydispersity index over a 30-day period.

FINDINGS

Our light scattering, ζ-potential, and spectroscopic results of the nanoemulsion surface show that the duration of droplet stability and the degree of molecular orientation of adsorbed polymers can be tuned by surfactant concentration, PEI concentration, and pH. These results illustrate how molecular surface properties of multi-polymer coated nanoemulsions contribute to synergistic effects and droplet stability, enabling advancements in applications surrounding biopharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food sciences.

Titanium-Based Alloy Surface Modification with TiO2 and Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) Multilayers for Dental Implants

Implant placement is an important repair method in dentistry and orthopedics. Increasing efforts have focused on optimizing the biocompatibility and osseointegration properties of titanium (Ti) and Ti-based alloys. In this work, Ti-based alloys were modified by the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique, which is a simple and versatile method for surface modification. The morphology and chemical structure of LbL films of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and Ti dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles were first characterized employing ultraviolet-visible and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopies as well as atomic force microscopy for further application in Ti-based alloy implants. The changes provoked by the LbL PSS/TiO₂ film on the Ti-based alloy surfaces were then investigated by scanning electron microscopy and micro-Raman techniques. Finally, in vivo tests (immunolabeling and biomechanical analysis) performed with screw implants in rats suggested that PSS/TiO₂ multilayers promote changes in both topography and chemical surface properties of the screw, providing beneficial effects for osteoblast activity. This simple and relatively low-cost growth process can open up possibilities to improve dental implants and, probably, bone implants in general.
