Production of demineralised high quality hierarchical activated carbon from lignite and determination of adsorption performance using methylene blue and p-nitrophenol: The role of surface functionality, accessible pore size and surface area

In the adsorption process, the surface area, pore and particle size distribution and the chemical structure of the solid and the type of adsorbent are of vital importance. Activated carbon (AC) is a very good adsorbent material and its cost is highly dependent on the starting material and production method. The pore size and functional structure of the surface depend on the amount of activation chemical used. Hierarchical ACs were produced from lignite by loading two different amounts of KOH. The impregnation ratio (KOH/lignite) was chosen as 1/1 and 3/1 and the produced ACs were labelled as AC1 and AC3. The surface areas of AC1 and AC3 were determined as 1321.3 and 2421.3 m2/g, and the total pore volumes were 1.079 and 1.425 cm3/g. Methylene blue (MB) and p-nitrophenol (p-NP) were used to determine the adsorption performance of the produced ACs. The adsorption data were evaluated in terms of the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The amounts of MB and p-NP adsorbed on the surface were calculated in mg/g, total and accessible surface area in mg/m2. It was determined that the MB and p-NP adsorbed to the AC1 sample were higher than the AC3 sample per m2 of population. Molecular orientation is possible depending on the solid surface functionality and chemical structure of the molecule to be adsorbed. It was concluded that in addition to the large surface area, the pore width that can be entered and the functional structure of the surface are very significant factors in the adsorption processes.

Remediation of noxious wastewater using nanohybrid adsorbent for preventing water pollution

Removal of toxic elements from wastewater effluent has got a lot of attention because of their severe negative effects on human and environmental health. In the past few years, rapid urbanization and industrial activities in developing countries have exacerbated the destruction of the environment. Most of the wastewater effluents are discharged untreated or inadequately treated, which has become a major concern due to its impact on sustainability and the environment. This is imperative to implement, innovative and resourceful wastewater treatment technologies requiring low investment. Among the various treatment technologies, cutting-edge processes in nano-material sciences have recently piqued the interest of scientists. Nanohybrid absorbents have the potential in improving wastewater treatment and increase water supply by utilizing unconventional water resources. Carbon nanotubes, titanium oxide, manganese oxide, activated carbon (AC), magnesium oxide, graphene, ferric oxides, and zinc oxide are examples of nano-adsorbents that are used to eliminate pollutants. This also demonstrated the effective removal of contaminants along with the harmful effects of chemicals, colorants, and metals found in wastewater. The present manuscript examines potential advances in nanotechnology in wastewater treatment for the prevention of water and soil pollution. This systematic review aims to highlight the importance of nanohybrid absorbents treatment technology for wastewater treatment and to explain how nanohybrid absorbents have the potential to revolutionize industrial pollution. There are also other published review articles on this topic but the present review covers an in-depth information on nano-adsorbents and their targeted contaminants.

Novel biochar and hydrochar for the adsorption of 2-nitrophenol from aqueous solutions: An approach using the PVSDM model

Two new adsorbents, namely avocado-based hydrochar and LDH/bone-based biochar, were developed, characterized, and applied for adsorbing 2-nitrophenol. The pore volume and surface diffusion model (PVSDM) was numerically solved for different geometries and applied to interpret the adsorption decay curves. Both adsorbents presented interesting textural and physicochemical characteristics, which achieved maximum adsorption capacities of 761 mg/g for biochar and 562 mg/g for hydrochar. The adsorption equilibrium data were well fitted by Henry isotherm. Besides, thermodynamic investigation revealed endothermic adsorption with the occurrence of electrostatic interactions. PVSDM predicted the adsorption decay curves for different adsorbent geometries at different initial concentrations of 2-nitrophenol. The surface diffusion was the main intraparticle mass transport mechanism. Furthermore, the external mass transfer and surface diffusion coefficients increased with the increase of 2-nitrophenol concentration.

Remediation with Semicoke-Preparation, Characterization, and Adsorption Application

Development of low-cost contaminant sorbents from industrial waste is now an essential aspect of the circular economy since their disposal continues to threaten ecological integrity. Semicoke (SC), a by-product generated in large quantities and described as solid waste from gasification of low-rank coal (LRC), is gaining popularity in line with its reuse capacity in the energy industry but is less explored as a contaminant adsorbent despite its physical and elemental carbon properties. This paper summarizes recent information on SC, sources and production, adsorption mechanism of polluting contaminants, and summarizes regeneration methods capable of yielding sustainability for the material reuse.
