The hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of carboxylate and carbonate modified nonionic surfactants

QSPR for the prediction of critical micelle concentration of different classes of surfactants using machine learning algorithms

The determination of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) is a crucial factor when evaluating surfactants, making it an essential tool in studying the properties of surfactants in various industrial fields. In this present research, we assembled a comprehensive set of 593 different classes of surfactants including, anionic, cationic, nonionic, zwitterionic, and Gemini surfactants to establish a link between their molecular structure and the negative logarithmic value of critical micelle concentration (pCMC) utilizing quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) methodologies. Statistical analysis revealed that a set of 14 significant Mordred descriptors (SlogP, GATS6d, nAcid, GATS8dv, GATS4dv, PEOE_VSA11, GATS8d, ATS0p, GATS1d, MATS5p, GATS3d, NdssC, GATS6dv and EState_VSA4), along with temperature, served as appropriate inputs. Different machine learning methods, such as multiple linear regression (MLR), random forest regression (RFR), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector regression (SVM), were employed in this study to build QSPR models. According to the statistical coefficients of QSPR models, SVR with Dragonfly hyperparameter optimization (SVR-DA) was the most accurate in predicting pCMC values, achieving (R2 = 0.9740, Q2 = 0.9739, r‾m2 = 0.9627, and Δrm2 = 0.0244) for the entire dataset.

The Development of Dermal Self-Double-Emulsifying Drug Delivery Systems: Preformulation Studies as the Keys to Success

Self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDSs) are lipid-based systems that are superior to other lipid-based oral drug delivery systems in terms of providing drug protection against the gastrointestinal (GI) environment, inhibition of drug efflux as mediated by P-glycoprotein, enhanced lymphatic drug uptake, improved control over plasma concentration profiles of drugs, enhanced stability, and drug loading efficiency. Interest in dermal spontaneous emulsions has increased, given that systems have been reported to deliver drugs across mucus membranes, as well as the outermost layer of the skin into the underlying layers. The background and development of a double spontaneous emulsion incorporating four anti-tubercular drugs, clofazimine (CFZ), isoniazid (INH), pyrazinamide (PZY), and rifampicin (RIF), are described here. Our methods involved examination of oil miscibility, the construction of pseudoternary phase diagrams, the determination of self-emulsification performance and the emulsion stability index of primary emulsions (PEs), solubility, and isothermal micro calorimetry compatibility and examination of emulsions via microscopy. Overall, the potential of self-double-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SDEDDSs) as a dermal drug delivery vehicle is now demonstrated. The key to success here is the conduct of preformulation studies to enable the development of dermal SDEDDSs. To our knowledge, this work represents the first successful example of the production of SDEDDSs capable of incorporating four individual drugs.

Structural Characterization of Nonionic Surfactant Micelles with CO2/Ethylene Oxide Head Groups and Their Temperature Dependence

Using CO₂ as a resource in the production of materials is a viable alternative to conventional, petroleum-based raw materials and therefore offers great potential for more sustainable chemistry. This study presents a detailed structural characterization of aggregates of nonionic dodecyl surfactants with different amounts of CO₂ substituting ethylene oxide (EO) in the head group. The micellar structure was characterized as a function of concentration and temperature by dynamic and static light scattering and, in further detail, by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The influence of the CO₂ unit in the hydrophilic EO group is systematically compared to the incorporation of propylene oxide (PO) and propiolactone (PL). The surfactants with carbonate groups in their head groups form ellipsoidal micelles in an aqueous solution similar to conventional nonionic surfactants, becoming bigger with increasing CO₂ content. In contrast, the incorporation of PO units hardly alters the behavior, while the incorporation of a PL unit has an effect comparable to the CO₂ unit. The analysis of the SANS data shows decreasing hydration with increasing CO₂ and PL content. By increasing the temperature, a typical sphere-rod transition is observed, where CO₂ surfactants show a much higher elongation with increasing temperature, which is correlated with the reduced cloud point and a lower extent of head group hydration. Our findings demonstrate that CO₂-containing surface-active compounds are an interesting, potentially "greener" alternative to conventional nonionic surfactants.

Changes in Phase Behavior from the Substitution of Ethylene Oxide with Carbon Dioxide in the Head Group of Nonionic Surfactants

Nonionic ethylene oxide (EO)-based surfactants are widely employed in commercial applications and normally form gel-like liquid crystalline phases at higher concentrations, rendering their handling under such conditions difficult. By incorporating CO2 units in their hydrophilic head groups, the consumption of the petrochemical EO was reduced, and the tendency to form liquid crystals was suppressed completely. This surprising behavior was characterized by rheology and studied with respect to its structural origin by means of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). These experiments showed a strongly reduced repulsive interaction between the micellar aggregates, attributed to a reduced hydration and enhanced interpenetration of the head groups owing to the presence of the CO2 units. In addition, with increasing CO2 content the surfactants became more efficient and effective with respect to their surface activity. These findings are important because the renewable resource CO2 is used, and the CO2 -containing surfactants allow handling at very high concentrations, an aspect of enormous practical importance.
