An insight into the solar demulsification of highly emulsified water produced from oilfields by monitoring the viscosity, zeta potential, particle size and rheology

Pretreatment of alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP)-flooding produced wastewater by electron beam radiation to improve oil-water separation

The management of wastewater produced from alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flooding, known for its considerable volume and high emulsion stability, poses a challenge in oilfields globally. This study has demonstrated that ionizing irradiation is a promising pretreatment method for ASP wastewater to improve oil-water separation. After a settling time of 1 h, approximately 69.5% of oil remained in the raw ASP wastewater, while only 20-29% of the oil persisted in the liquid phase following radiation at absorbed doses ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 kGy. A noticeable increase in the size of oil droplets and reduction in turbidity was observed after irradiation. Further analysis revealed that the combination of surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and alkali exhibits a synergistic impact, leading to a substantial reduction in interface tension of ASP wastewater. Notably, ionizing irradiation induces several key changes that are crucial for efficient demulsification. The transformation of the wastewater's rheological behavior from pseudoplastics to a Newtonian fluid accompanied by a reduction in viscosity, the increased interfacial tension at both liquid-air and liquid-oil interfaces, along with the degradation of organic components such as partly hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) and SDS, all contribute to the coalescence and floatation of oil droplets.

Freshly Milled Quartz Particles Obtained from River Sand as an Efficient Natural Demulsifier for Crude Oil Emulsions

Saline water necessarily contained in crude oil forms complex and stable water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions with oil. Due to the negative impact of this emulsion on the oil’s transportation and refining, special materials are added to help break the emulsion and separate water. Herein, a comparative study of the demulsifying ability concerning w/o emulsion of the original and freshly milled quartz (FMQ) particles isolated from river sand was carried out. The effect of quartz with a mesh size of 75 μm on reducing emulsion stability was investigated using rheological measurements, interfacial tension measurements, demulsification tests, as well as routine methods for characterizing solid and liquid materials. With the addition of 3 wt% FMQ, 97% demulsification efficiency was achieved after 100 min of settling, against 140 min for the original quartz. The role of milling quartz is to increase the ability of water to adhere and thus locally increase the pH value; this results in a reduction in the stability of the emulsion and its destruction. The prolonging effect of quartz milling lasted about 2.5–3.0 h, after which the demulsifying ability of milled quartz became comparable to that of the starting material.

Effects of the Incorporation of Calcium Chloride on the Physical and Oxidative Stability of Filled Hydrogel Particles

In this study, the effects of calcium chloride (CaCl2) addition on the physical and oxidative stabilities of filled hydrogel were investigated. The results revealed that CaCl2 significantly enhanced the particle size, interfacial layer thickness, apparent viscosity, and viscoelastic behavior of filled hydrogels and decreased their light and whiteness values (p < 0.05). This phenomenon was mainly attributed to the strong binding ability between Ca2+ and protein/pectin mixtures, which were present in the interfacial area or aqueous phase, as verified by cryo-scanning electron microscopy results. Moreover, lower levels of CaCl2 (2 or 4 mM) significantly enhanced the oxidative stability of filled hydrogels (p < 0.05), particularly at a concentration of 4 mM. However, a higher level of CaCl2 (6 or 8 mM) resulted in an electrostatic shielding effect, which resulted in the aggregation of multiple droplets and the flocculation of the filled hydrogels, which negatively affected the oxidative stability of filled hydrogels. The findings of this study indicated that appropriate Ca2+ levels (4 mM) improved the physical and oxidative stability of filled hydrogel, and this finding may provide useful insights for the development of effective delivery systems for specific applications.

Stability Dynamic Characteristic of Oil-in-Water Emulsion from Alkali-Surfactant-Polymer Flooding

The relationship model between the droplet lifetime and interface properties is established to characterize the stability of oil droplets, and then, the influence of the alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) concentration on the lifetime is analyzed by theoretical calculations. The stability dynamic characteristics of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions from ASP flooding were evaluated using the emulsion stability model (Civan model) based on two-phase separation. The effect of ASP on dynamic characteristics of the emulsion was explored by analyzing film strength qualitatively and measuring interfacial tension and ζ potential. The results showed that the Civan model was suitable to evaluate the stability of the O/W emulsion and to obtain the corresponding dynamic characteristics. The O/W emulsions became more stable with the increasing alkali concentration first at a low alkali concentration (c _NaOH < 200 mg/L) and then became less stable with the increasing alkali concentration at a high alkali concentration (c _NaOH > 200 mg/L). The stabilities of O/W emulsions were improved with the increasing concentrations of the surfactant and polymer. The mechanism of stabilization of the O/W emulsion by ASP is as follows. The surface-active substances formed by the reaction of alkali and acidic substances in the oil phase, together with surfactants, adsorb at the oil-water interface, reducing the interfacial tension and increasing the strength of the oil-water interface film. The polymer only increases the strength of the interface film by increasing the viscoelasticity of the oil-water interface film.

A novel silica-supported polyether polysiloxane quaternary ammonium demulsifier for highly efficient fine-sized oil droplet removal of oil-in-water emulsions

The existence of fine-sized oil drops that are difficult to coalesce greatly decreases the separation efficiency of produced water from alkali, surfactant, and polymer flooding technology (ASP) containing oil-in-water emulsions. To improve oil–water separation efficiency, a silica-supported polyether polysiloxane quaternary ammonium (abbreviated as PPQA@SiO₂) demulsifier was synthesized. The supported demulsifier possesses a rough surface structure and large surface area. In addition, it displays high thermal stability. It was applied for treating the produced water from ASP flooding. The effects of dosage, treatment temperature and treatment time on the oil removal efficiency from ASP produced water were investigated. Owing to the synergetic effect of demulsification and adsorption, the supported demulsifier exhibited an oil removal greater than 92% within 50 min at the initial oil concentration of 300 mg L⁻¹, which is much higher than that of a commercial demulsifier SA001 (40.33%). Furthermore, the demulsification mechanism was explored from the perspective of the zeta potential, mean diameter and size distribution of the oil droplets. The high oil removal efficiency establishes PPQA@SiO₂ as a promising candidate for oil–water separation from the ASP flooding produced wastewater.
