Functional fibers/textiles for smart sensing devices and applications in personal healthcare systems

Personalized medical diagnostics and monitoring have become increasingly important due to inefficient and delayed medical services of traditional centralized healthcare systems. To enhance the comfort and portability, flexible health monitoring systems have been developed in recent years. In particular, smart fiber/textile-based sensing devices show superiority for continuously monitoring personal health and vital physiological parameters owing to their light weight, good flexibility and inherent miniaturization. This review focuses on the recent advances in smart fiber/textile-based sensing devices for wearable electronic applications. First, fabrication strategies of smart sensing fibers/textiles are introduced in detail. In addition, sensing performances, working principles and applications of smart sensing fibers/textiles such as pressure sensing fibers/textiles, stretchable strain sensing fibers/textiles, temperature sensing fibers/textiles, and biofluid, gas and humidity sensing fibers/textiles in health monitoring are also reviewed systematically. Finally, we propose current challenges and future prospects in the area of fiber/textile-based sensors for wearable healthcare monitoring and diagnosis systems. In general, this review aims to give an overall perspective of the promising field by reviewing various fiber/textile-based sensing devices and highlighting the importance for researchers to keep up with the sequential exploration of soft sensing fibers/textiles for applications in wearable smart systems.

Destructive-Treatment-Free Rapid Polymer-Assisted Metal Deposition for Versatile Electronic Textiles

Highly conductive, durable, and breathable metal-coated textiles are critical building block materials for future wearable electronics. In order to enhance the metal adhesion on the textile surface, existing solution-based approaches to preparing these materials require time-consuming presynthesis and/or premodification processes, typically in the order of tens of minutes to hours, on textiles prior to metal plating. Herein, we report a UV-induced rapid polymer-assisted metal deposition (r-PAMD) that offers a destructive-treatment-free process to deposit highly conductive metals on a wide variety of textile materials, including cotton, polyester, nylon, Kevlar, glass fiber, and carbon cloth. In comparison to the state of the arts, r-PAMD significantly shortens the modification time to several minutes and is compatible with the roll-to-roll fabrication manner. Moreover, the deposited metals show outstanding adhesion, which withstands rigorous flexing, abrasion, and machine washing tests. We demonstrate that these metal-coated textiles are suitable for applications in two vastly different fields, being wearable and washable sensors, and lithium batteries.

Simulation of Light Distribution in Gamma Irradiated UHMWPE Using Monte Carlo Model for Light (MCML) Transport in Turbid Media: Analysis for Industrial Scale Biomaterial Modifications

(1) Background: This study investigated the miscibility of carbon-based fillers within industrial scale polymers for the preparation of superior quality polymer composites. It focuses on finding the light distribution in gamma irradiated ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). (2) Methods: The Kubleka–Munk model (KMM) was used to extract the optical properties, i.e., absorption coefficients (μ_a) and scattering coefficients (μ_s). Samples amounting to 30 kGy and 100 kGy of irradiated (in the open air) UHMWPE from 630 nm to 800 nm were used for this purpose. Moreover, theoretical validation of experimental results was performed while using extracted optical properties as inputs for the Monte Carlo model of light transport (MCML) code. (3) Conclusions: The investigations revealed that there was a significant decrease in absorption and scattering coefficient (μ_a & μ_s) values with irradiation, and 30 kGy irradiated samples suffered more compared to 100 kGy irradiated samples. Furthermore, the simulation of light transport for 800 nm showed an increase in penetration depth for UHMWPE after gamma irradiation. The decrease in dimensionless transport albedo  μs(μa+μs) from 0.95 to 0.93 was considered responsible for this increase in photon absorption per unit area with irradiation. The report results are of particular importance when considering the light radiation (from 600 nm to 899 nm) for polyethylene modification and/or stabilization via enhancing the polyethylene chain mobility.
