Low bandgap microsphere-like magnetic nanocomposite: An enhanced photocatalyst for degradation of organic contaminants and fabrication of SERS-active surfaces

Photocatalytic Degradation of Antibiotics via Exploitation of a Magnetic Nanocomposite: A Green Nanotechnology Approach toward Drug-Contaminated Wastewater Reclamation

In the quest for eco-conscious innovations, this research was designed for the sustainable synthesis of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, using ferric chloride hexahydrate salt as a precursor and extract of Eucalyptus globulus leaves as both a reducing and capping agent, which are innovatively applied as a photocatalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics "ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin". Sugar cane bagasse biomass, sugar cane bagasse pyrolyzed biochar, and magnetite/sugar cane bagasse biochar nanocomposite were also synthesized via environmentally friendly organized approaches. The optimum conditions for the degradation of ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin were found to be pH 6 for ciprofloxacin and 5 for amoxicillin, dosage of the photocatalyst (0.12 g), concentration (100 mg/L), and irradiation time (240 min). The maximum efficiencies of percentage degradation for ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin were found to be (73.51%) > (63.73%) > (54.57%) and (74.07%) > (61.55%) > (50.66%) for magnetic nanocomposites, biochar, and magnetic nanoparticles, respectively. All catalysts demonstrated favorable performance; however, the "magnetite/SCB biochar" nanocomposite exhibited the most promising results among the various catalysts employed in the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics. Kinetic studies for the degradation of antibiotics were also performed, and notably, the pseudo-first-order chemical reaction showed the best results for the degradation of antibiotics. Through a comprehensive and comparative analysis of three unique photocatalysts, this research identified optimal conditions for efficient treatment of drug-contaminated wastewater, thus amplifying the practical significance of the findings. The recycling of magnetic nanoparticles through magnetic separation, coupled with their functional modification for integration into composite materials, holds significant application potential in the degradation of antibiotics.

Facile In-Situ photocatalytic reduction of AuNPs on multilayer Core-Shell Fe3O4@SiO2@PDA magnetic nanostructures and their SERS application

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a promising analytical technique for the rapid, sensitive, and repeatable detection in various SERS application fields. Herein, a new type of potential magnetically recyclable SERS substrate was designed and rapidly synthesized via a facile three-step template method. First, the magnetic ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) cores were prepared by a convenient solvothermal approach, and coated with a thin layer of silica by a sol-gel process in order to improve their stability in complicated environments. Next, the negatively charged polydopamine (PDA)/K6[SiW11VIVO40]·7H2O (PDA/SiW11V) outer shell was assembled upon the magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles via a layer-by-layer sequential adsorption process using the stickiness of PDA. The SiW11V multilayer shell can be used as the subsequent photocatalytic reduction precursors for the in-situ loading of high-density gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), without any other organic additives. The AuNPs decorated multilayer core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2@PDA magnetic nanostructures were employed as a potential magnetically recyclable SERS substrate, and showed excellent SERS performance. Using crystal violet (CV) as a model target, the as-fabricated AuNPs modified multilayer core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2@PDA magnetic nanostructures SERS substrates exhibited significant enhancement, and pushed the detection limit down to 10-12 M. Aside from the ultrahigh sensitivity, these SERS substrates also possess an excellent reproducibility (relative standard deviation (RSD) ∼ 8.3%), long-term stability (75 days), and unique chemical stability capability in different organic solvents and different environments with pH ≤ 10. Furthermore, a real-life application is also performed by the detection of melamine in spiked milk solution using the as-prepared magnetic nanostructures SERS-active substrates (limit of detection (LOD), 10-8 M). These results highlight that the rational design and controllable synthesis of multifunctional magnetic SERS substrates is a promising strategy in many different application fields such as biosensing, photoelectrocatalysis, and medical diagnosis.

Eco-friendly fabrication of multifunctional magnetic plasmonic photocatalyst for adsorption, SERS monitoring and photodegradation of residual fluoroquinolone antibiotics in water

In this work, a kind of multifunctional magnetic plasmonic photocatalyst was prepared by a green and efficient process. Magnetic mesoporous anatase titanium dioxide (Fe₃O₄@mTiO₂) was synthesized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal, and Ag NPs were simultaneously in-situ grown on Fe₃O₄@mTiO₂ (Fe₃O₄@mTiO₂@Ag), graphene oxide (GO) was then wrapped on Fe₃O₄@mTiO₂@Ag (Fe₃O₄@mTiO₂@Ag@GO) to increase its adsorption capacity for fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs). Owing to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag, as well as the photocatalytic capacity of TiO₂, a multifunctional platform based on Fe₃O₄@mTiO₂@Ag@GO was constructed for adsorption, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) monitoring and photodegradation of FQs in water. The quantitative SERS detection of norfloxacin (NOR), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and enrofloxacin (ENR) was demonstrated with LOD of 0.1 μg mL^-1, and the qualitative analysis was confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The photocatalytic degradation rate of NOR over Fe₃O₄@mTiO₂@Ag@GO was about 4.6 and 1.4 times faster than that of Fe₃O₄@mTiO₂ and Fe₃O₄@mTiO₂@Ag, indicating the synergetic effects of Ag NPs and GO, the used Fe₃O₄@mTiO₂@Ag@GO can be easily recovered and recycled for at least 5 times. Thus, the eco-friendly magnetic plasmonic photocatalyst provided a potential solution for the removal and monitoring of residual FQs in environmental water.

Nanoclay- and TiO2 Nanoparticle-Modified Poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) Hydrogels: A Multifunctional Material for Application in Photocatalytic Degradation and Adsorption-Based Removal of Organic Contaminants

In recent times, access to clean water has become increasingly difficult and one of the most important problems for the sustainability of life due to environmental pollution. Based on this thought, in this study, a multifunctional hydrogel nanocomposite (nanoclay@TiO₂@PNVP) containing linear poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PNVP), nanoclay, and TiO₂ nanoparticles was synthesized and used as an adsorbent and photocatalyst for the adsorption-based and photocatalytic degradation-based removal of organic and pharmaceutical pollutants such as methylene blue (MB) and sildenafil citrate (SLD). The modification of the hydrogel with TiO₂ nanoparticles and nanoclay aimed to increase the adsorption capacity of the PNVP hydrogel as well as to gain photocatalytic properties for the effective removal of organic contaminants. This hybrid material, which can be cleaned in two different ways, can be reused and recycled at least 10 times. Characterization studies were carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermogravimetry, and viscosimetry techniques. Optimization studies for the adsorption-based removal of organic contaminants were carried out on MB and SLD as model organic compounds. The optimum parameters for MB were found at pH 10 of the sample solution when 50 mg of the nanoclay@TiO₂@PNVP hydrogel nanocomposite was used for 420 min of contact time. It was observed that 99% of the MB was photocatalytically degraded within 150 min at pH 10. Our material had multifunctional applicability properties, showing high adsorption and photocatalytic performances over 99% for at least 10 times of use. For the removal of organic and pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater, the synthesized material can be used in two treatment processes separately or in combination in one step, providing an important advantage for its usability in environmental applications.

New rapid detection method of total chlorogenic acids in plants using SERS based on reusable Cu2O-Ag substrate

A new method for rapidly detecting of total chlorogenic acids (CGAs) in plants by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based on reusable Cu₂O-Ag substrate was developed in this study. The Cu₂O-Ag substrate prepared by the in-situ growth method had high uniformity with peak intensity relative standard deviation (RSD) of 5.27%, repeatability with peak intensity RSD of 3.58%, and sensitivity with an analytical enhancement factor of 1.27 × 10⁵ for detecting CGAs. Furthermore, the substrate had excellent reusability, after it was reused for seven cycles, the signal strength of CGAs was still above 80% of initial. Compared with the standard method of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the SERS method can successfully analyze the contents of total CGAs in plants, such as Stevia rebaudiana leaves, coffee beans, Lonicera japonica leaves, and Eucommia ulmoides flowers, with recovery rate from 93.26% to 112.65%, and the limit of detection was 0.13 μg/mL. The total CGAs content of Stevia rebaudiana leaves samples detected by HPLC and SERS have good consistency with R = 0.9760 and RMSE = 3286 mg/kg. Furthermore, the SERS method only needed less than 1 min, one standard and reusable substrate in this study to analyze, which can further reduce the cost of method analysis. Therefore, the SERS method with the appropriate substrate can provide a rapid, accurate, and economic way to detect the total CGAs in plants.

Applications of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy in environmental detection

As the human population grows, the anthropogenic impacts from various agricultural and industrial processes produce unwanted contaminants in the environment. The accurate, sensitive and rapid detection of such contaminants is vital for human health and safety. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a valuable analytical tool with wide applications in environmental contaminant monitoring. The aim of this review is to summarize recent advancements within SERS research as it applies to environmental detection, with a focus on research published or accessible from January 2021 through December 2021 including early-access publications. Our goal is to provide a wide breadth of information that can be used to provide background knowledge of the field, as well as inform and encourage further development of SERS techniques in protecting environmental quality and safety. Specifically, we highlight the characteristics of effective SERS nanosubstrates, and explore methods for the SERS detection of inorganic, organic, and biological contaminants including heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, plastic particles, synthetic dyes, pesticides, viruses, bacteria and mycotoxins. We also discuss the current limitations of SERS technologies in environmental detection and propose several avenues for future investigation. We encourage researchers to fill in the identified gaps so that SERS can be implemented in a real-world environment more effectively and efficiently, ultimately providing reliable and timely data to help and make science-based strategies and policies to protect environmental safety and public health.

Recent advancements of g-C3N4-based magnetic photocatalysts towards the degradation of organic pollutants: a review

Heterogeneous photocatalysis premised on advanced oxidation processes has witnessed a broad application perspective, including water purification and environmental remediation. In particular, the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), an earth-abundant metal-free conjugated polymer, has acquired extensive application scope and interdisciplinary consideration owing to its outstanding structural and physicochemical properties. However, several issues such as the high recombination rate of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs, smaller specific surface area, and lower electrical conductivity curtail the catalytic efficacy of bulk g-C₃N₄. Another challenging task is separating the catalyst from the reaction medium, limiting their reusability and practical applications. Therefore, several methodologies are adopted strategically to tackle these issues. Attention is being paid, especially to the magnetic nanocomposites (NCs) based catalysts to enhance efficiency and proficient reusability property. This review summarizes the latest progress related to the design and development of magnetic g-C₃N₄-based NCs and their utilization in photocatalytic systems. The usefulness of the semiconductor heterojunctions on the catalytic activity, working mechanism, and degradation of pollutants are discussed in detail. The major challenges and prospects of using magnetic g-C₃N₄-based NCs for photocatalytic applications are highlighted in this report.
