Application of polymeric modified polyaniline-silica particles for improved corrosion resistance of hybrid zinc coatings

Electrocatalysis degradation of coal tar wastewater using a novel hydrophobic benzalacetone modified lead dioxide electrode

Coal tar wastewater is hard to degrade by traditional methods because of its toxic pollutant constituents and high concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons, especially phenolic substances. A new type of hydrophobic benzacetone modified PbO₂ anode (BA-PbO₂ electrodes) was used for the electrocatalytic treatment of coal tar wastewater in a continuous cycle reactor. The surface morphology, structure, valences of elements, hydrophobicity, hydroxyl radical (·OH) produced capacity, electrochemical properties and stability of BA-PbO₂ electrodes were characterized by SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), contact angle, a fluorescence probe test, an electrochemical workstation and accelerated life test, respectively. The BA-PbO₂ electrodes exhibited a compact structure and finely dispersed crystallize size of 4.6 nm. The optimum degradation conditions of coal tar wastewater were as follows: current density of 90 mA cm^-2, electrode gap of 1 cm and temperature at 25 °C with flow velocity of 80 L h^-1. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency reached 92.39% after 240 min of degradation under the optimized conditions and the after-treatment COD value was 379.51 mg L^-1 which was lower than the centralized emission standard (less than 400 mg L^-1). These findings demonstrated the feasibility and efficiency of electrocatalytically degrading coal tar wastewater by BA-PbO₂ electrodes. The possible mechanism and pathway for phenol a specific pollutant in coal tar wastewater were investigated by quantum chemistry calculations (Multiwfn) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The toxicity of each intermediate was predicted by the ECOSAR program.

Effect of Electrodeposition Parameters on the Morphology, Topography and Corrosion Resistance of Epoxy Resin/Zinc Hybrid Coatings

The paper presents the morphology, topography and corrosion behavior of epoxy resin/zinc hybrid coatings obtained by electrodeposition from zinc sulphate electrolyte. The effect of current density and mean diameter size of polymer particles used for electrodeposition of the epoxy resin/zinc coatings on the morphology, topography and roughness of the surfaces were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy. The corrosion behavior of the hybrid coatings in 0.5 M sodium chloride solution was evaluated using electrochemical methods. For microbiological corrosion, the effect of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) on the surfaces was evaluated using epifluorescence microscopy. The surface roughness before and after bacteria attachment was evaluated using Atomic force microscopy. Polymer particles provide an influence in restricting the growth of zinc crystals as well as a catalytic role in nucleation sites increase. The results of electrochemical tests indicate a very good corrosion resistance of hybrid coatings comparing with zinc coatings. Epifluorescence images demonstrate that hybrid coating surfaces are slightly attacked by sulphate reducing bacteria.

Effect of Exposure Conditions on the Interfacial Bond Properties of SS400 Plate Coated with Various Epoxy Resins

This study aims to investigate the effects of different exposure conditions on the interfacial bond between steel plates and epoxy resin coatings at early ages. Test variables include the epoxy resin types, exposure conditions, exposure periods, and coating equipment. The selected epoxy resins were applied to prepared steel plates and cured at each exposure condition for 7, 28, 56, or 91 days, and the pull-off bond strength and coating thickness were measured. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images were obtained to study the interfacial bond for some representative coatings. Three different exposure conditions (indoors and actual marine environment) were considered in this study. This study is also focusing on the improvement of previously developed underwater coating equipment and evaluating the performance. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the improved equipment types under different environmental conditions: indoors (tap water and seawater) and outdoor conditions. The improved equipment types were confirmed to be effective for underwater coating and easier to use than the previous equipment under real sea conditions. The experimental results also confirmed that the bond strength of the coating decreased as the curing time increased.

Fighting corrosion with stimuli-responsive polymer conjugates

Corrosion is a financial and enviromental plague which leads to the deterioration of our infrastructures. Using corrosion inhibitors at low concentrations in coatings is one effective method for preventing corrosion. Inspired by the development of polymer-drug conjugates, corrosion inhibitors are incorporated in various polymer structures to create novel materials for hindering corrosion. We discuss the strategies to covalently integrate corrosion inhibitors in polymer structures to form polymer-inhibitor conjugates. Inhibitors are conjugated to polymers via non-labile or stimuli-labile linkages to allow the release of the inhibitors upon onset of corrosion. The application and anticorrosion performance of representative polymers are also discussed.

Obtaining and Corrosion Performance of Composite Zinc Coatings with Incorporated Carbon Spheres

The present work describes one possible way to prepare a stable aqueous suspension of carbon sphere particles with a positive charge that is suitable for simultaneous electrodeposition with zinc on steel substrate. In order to stabilize the suspension against aggregation, tri-block amphiphilic copolymer Pluronic F127, which is commercially available, was adsorbed on the surface of carbon sphere particles. This polymer contained poly (ethylene oxide) blocks as hydrophilic segments and poly (propylene oxide) blocks as the hydrophobic part. Scanning electron microscopy and visual observations confirmed the stability of the obtained suspension. The carbon sphere particles were embedded into the zinc coating by the co-electrodeposition process. The surface morphology of the composite coating was investigated using scanning electron microscopy. The influence of the carbon spheres on the cathodic and anodic processes was evaluated with cyclic voltammetry studies. The electrochemical investigations were realized in a model corrosion medium (5% NaCl solution with pH 6.7) by application of selected methods such as polarization resistance, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which revealed higher protective ability of the composite coating against corrosion in an aggressive environment.
