Abstract
The application of green synthesized nanocomposites for the prevention of environmental pollution is increasing nowadays. Here, a green composite has been synthesized by embedding MnO2 on Rauvolfia tetraphylla leaves using its leaf extract hereinafter termed as MnO2@RTL, and demonstrated for crystal violet (CV) dye removal from simulated and real wastewater. The surface properties of the material were determined by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area, pHZPC, and zeta potential. The material exhibits a remarkable adsorption capacity of 61.162 mg/g at 328 K and pH 7. The adsorption was best fitted with Pseudo-second-order kinetic (R2 = 0.998) and a combination of Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model (R2 = 0.994-0.999). The thermodynamic study revealed spontaneous (ΔG values = - 2.988 to - 4.978 kJ/mol) and endothermic (ΔH values = 6.830 to 11.018 kJ/mol) adsorption. After adsorption, 80% regeneration occurred with 50% methanol, and recycled up to five times. Advantageously, the material was able to remove CV dye in the presence of coexistent ions and from industrial wastewater, confirming field applicability. The adsorption capacity of the material is superior to previously reported materials. The standard deviation and relative standard deviations have been evaluated to be 0.000422-0.000667 and 0.473-0.749%, which suggests the reliability of the experiments. The exhausted material, after recycling, was pyrolyzed to overcome the disposal problem. It was established as a secondary adsorbent with 73% efficiency which makes the material win-win. The material showed antibacterial properties with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria with a zone of inhibition 5 mm.

Abstract
Water contamination has turned into one of the most serious issues in the world. Nanomaterials are proficient to carry away heavy metals, organic and inorganic dyes, pesticides, and small molecules from polluted water. In this regard, nanoparticles have gained much attention due to their extraordinary properties compared to bulk materials. Metal oxide nanoparticles and nanocomposites have several advantages such as elevated surface area, low concentration, easily separable after treatment and so on. Among many feasible techniques, the adsorption process is one of the most useful techniques for removing heavy ions and dyes from wastewater and has gained much attention from researchers. Several studies on metal oxide nanoparticles and their use in wastewater treatment have been published in the literature. This chapter gives an outline about five metal oxide based nanomaterials and nanocomposites as well as their applications in water pollution removal where the efficiency, limits and favourable circumstances are compared and explored. This article surely helps to gather information about some metal oxide nanoparticles and nanocomposites in wastewater treatment by the adsorption technique. In this review article, we primarily focused on five metal oxide nanoparticles and some of their recent applications published in the last two years.

Abstract
Calcium and magnesium ions usually exist in natural water. When Cd2+ is removed from water by adsorption, it will be inhibited by these two ions. Titanate nanotubes (TNTs) have an effective adsorption capacity for Cd2+ due to extraordinary ion exchange property. However, TNTs also adsorb Ca2+ and Mg2+ in water. In this study, carbon-modified TNT (TNT/C) and TNT/C further treated with acid (TNT/HC) were synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) images show that TNT/C or TNT/HC still keep nanotube morphology. The experimental results show the order of adsorption amount to Cd2+ is TNT (171.56 mg/g) > TNT/C (166 mg/g) > TNT/HC (159.88 mg/g) when there is no Ca2+ or Mg2+. But when there is 0.1 M Ca2+ or Mg2+ in the water, the order of Cd2+ adsorption capacity becomes TNT/HC (44.28, 49.04 mg/g) > TNT/C (58.84, 69.32 mg/g) > TNT (65.52, 70.6 mg/g). It indicates that the surface carbon modification can alleviate the hindrance of Ca2+ or Mg2+ to Cd2+ removal. This is because the carbon on the surface of TNT captured part of Ca2+ or Mg2+; it made more Cd2+ be successfully absorbed by TNT through ion exchange. This mechanism was confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra analysis. The results of this paper can provide ideas for the adsorption and removal of Cd2+ in water in the presence of Ca2+ or Mg2+.

Abstract
Dyes are considered as recalcitrant compounds and are not easily removed through conventional water treatment processes. The present study demonstrated the fabrication of polyaniline hollow microsphere (PNHM)/MnO2/Fe3O4 composites by in situ deposition of MnO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of PNHM. The physicochemical characteristics and adsorption behavior of the prepared PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 composites towards the removal of toxic methyl green (MG) and Congo red (CR) dyes have been investigated. The characterization study revealed the successful synthesis of the prepared PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 adsorbent with a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 191.79 m2/g. The batch adsorption study showed about 88 and 98% adsorption efficiencies for MG and CR dyes, respectively, at an optimum dose of 1 g/L of PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 at pH ∼6.75 at room temperature (303 ± 3 K). The adsorption phenomena of MG and CR dyes were well described by the Elovich and pseudo-second-order kinetics, respectively, and Freundlich isotherm model. The thermodynamics study shows that the adsorption reactions were endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qmax) for MG and CR dyes was observed as 1142.13 and 599.49 mg/g, respectively. The responsible adsorption mechanisms involved in dye removal were electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, and the formation of the covalent bonds. The coexisting ion study revealed that the presence of phosphate co-ion considerably reduced the CR dye removal efficiency. However, the desorption-regeneration study demonstrated the successful reuse of the spent PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 material for the adsorption of MG and CR dyes for several cycles. Given the aforementioned findings, the PNHM/MnO2/Fe3O4 nanocomposites could be considered as a promising adsorbent for the remediation of dye-contaminated water.

Abstract
Hybrid ion exchangers (HIX) containing manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2) based on macroporous and gel-type carboxylic cation exchangers as supporting materials were obtained. The hybrid materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77 K and mercury porosimetry. HIX with introduced MnO2 (20.0–32.8 wt% Mn) were tested for removal of dissolved sulfides from anoxic aqueous solutions with 100–500 mg S2−/dm3 concentrations. The process proceeded effortlessly at pH 10–13 despite unfavorable electrostatic interactions of the reactants. The highest exhibited sorption capacity was 144.3 ± 7.1 mg S2−/g. Approximately 65% of dissolved sulfides were oxidized to S2O32− ions and repelled from HIX structure. On average, 13% of sulfide removal products were adsorbed by the MnO2 surface. The impact of MnO2 load and the ionic form of HIX functional groups on removal of sulfides and resulting products was examined. The mechanism of the process is suggested.
