Exploring carbonate rock wettability across scales: role of (bio)minerals

HYPOTHESIS

The wettability of carbonate rocks is expected to be affected by the organic components of biominerals which are complex, nanostructured organo-mineral assemblages. Elucidating the nanoscale mechanisms driving the wettability of solid surfaces will enable a better understanding of the role of biominerals in the wetting properties of carbonate rocks to control various geological, environmental and industrial processes.

EXPERIMENTS

Using Atomic Force Microscopy and Spectroscopy (AFM/AFS) we probed the wettability properties of carbonate rocks with different amounts of organic material. The adhesion properties of two types of limestones were determined in liquid environments at different length scales (nm to mm) using functionalized tips with different chemical groups to determine the extent of surface hydrophobic and hydrophilic organo-mineral interactions.

FINDINGS

We observed homogeneous hydrophobic areas at length scales below < 5 µm. The origin of this hydrophobicity is linked to the presence of organics, whose amount and spatial distribution depend on the rock composition. Specifically, our results reveal that the biogenic vs non-biogenic origin of the mineral grains is the main rock property controlling the wettability of the solid surface. Overall, our methodology offers a multi-scale approach to unravel the role that organic moieties and biominerals play in controlling the wettability of rock-water interfaces.

Atomic force microscopy for the characterisation of pinning effects of seawater micro-droplets in n-decane on a calcite surface

HYPOTHESIS

Roughness is an important parameter in applications where wetting needs to be characterized. Micro-computed tomography is commonly used to characterize wetting in porous media but the main limitation of this approach is the incapacity to identify nanoscale roughness. Atomic force microscopy, AFM, however, has been used to characterize the topography of surfaces down to the molecular scale. Here we investigate the potential of using AFM to characterize wetting behavior at the nanoscale.

EXPERIMENTS

Droplets of water on cleaved calcite under decane were imaged using quantitative imaging QI atomic force microscopy where a force-distance curve is obtained at every pixel.

FINDINGS

When the AFM tip passed through the water droplet surface, an attraction was observed due to capillary effects, such that the thickness of the water film was estimated and hence the profile of the droplet obtained. This enables parameters such as the contact angle and contact angle distribution to be obtained at a nanometer scale. The contact angles around the 3-phase contact line are found to be quasi-symmetrically distributed between 10-30°. A correlation between the height profile of the surface and contact angle distribution demonstrates a quasi-proportional relationship between roughness on the calcite surface and contact angle.

Impact of Iron Minerals in Promoting Wettability Alterations in Reservoir Formations

Asphaltene adsorption and deposition onto rock surfaces are predominantly the cause of wettability and permeability alterations which result in well productivity losses. These alterations can be induced by rock-fluid interactions which are affected by well operations such as acidizing, stimulation, gas injections, and so forth. Iron minerals are found abundantly in sandstone reservoir formations and pose a problem by precipitation and adsorption of polar crude components. This is due to rock-fluid interactions, which are dependent on reservoir pH; thus, this research work studied the surface charge development of pyrite, magnetite, and hematite. To ascertain conditions that will result in iron mineral precipitation and adsorption of asphaltene on iron mineral surfaces, zeta potential measurement was carried out. This is to determine the charge and colloidal stability of the iron mineral samples across wide pH values. Experimental results show that the charge development of iron minerals is controlled by mineral dissolution, the formation of complexes, adsorption of ions on the mineral surface, and the collapse of the double layer. The findings provide insights into the implications of iron mineral contacting crude oil in reservoir formations and how they contribute to wettability alterations due to different well operations.
